Chapter Two
Dream and Nightmare share the gift of dream walking. They can enter a Monster's dreams and nightmare's respectively. It's an easy way to spread emotions while resting their physical bodies. The problem with dream walking is that it's nearly impossible to locate a specific Monster's dreams. Countless different lives and fantasies fly past Dream as he rushes through dream after dream. His duty as a Guardian nags at him to slow down, but he can't.
Nightmare very well could have imagined sensing Alloy here in his feverish state. Monsters don't dream if they're dead, or in Alloy's case, reduced to a soul. Dream still searches. He trusts that his brother had to have seen something. All this sitting around has made Dream desperate to help.
As Nightmare and Alloy have been decommissioned, Error 404 had gotten more creative with attempts to lure Ink out. 404's begun to destroy AUs, but he's not as merciful as Error was. 404 lets all those souls suffer in the void when he destroys the worlds first. Fortunately, some worlds are above his influence. The Aus that Alloy has lovingly wrapped up with his strings are protected. Dream considers this all as he sprints through different realities. Some Monsters look at him strangely before going back to their fantasy. Dream is moving so fast that he nearly leaves when he suddenly does stumble upon a familiar skeleton. The Guardian digs his heals into the ground and skids to a stop, watching.
Alloy really is here. His back is to Dream, but there's no mistaking him. Of all things, Alloy is dancing. He's humming along to the tune of sourceless music while swaying gently in a waltz. That weirdo. Dream smiles. There is something a little strange about Alloy, though. He seems less clumsy and more graceful and sure of his movements. Weirder yet, two weapons are crossed on his back. Broomie is obviously one. The other appears to be some sort of giant sewing needle. Alloy slowly spins himself with one hand over his head as if he had a partner, scarf twirling after him. This is when Dream sees his eyes. His shape-shifting eye light seems to have frozen on a star with a strange deep blue color. The other is a normal sized blue and red pupil. They match much better than before.
"Oh! Dream, you're here," Alloy smiles kindly, seemingly not too surprised. "Do you want to dance? I've been practicing since your bother's get-together. I'm hoping to not step on my partner's feet next time." Alloy giggles a little at the last part, a little embarrassed. His voice is smooth and doesn't lag or glitch.
"Nightmare? Party?" Dream is confused for a moment, but then shakes it off. This is a dream. Monsters aren't quite themselves in the dream-scape.
"Yes! I still can't believe that Blue would do something like that to all the drinks! I bet he could drink a few Monsters from Underfell under the table," Alloy full out laughs at this. He grabs Dream's hand then and swings him around in a twirl, laughing gleefully. Alloy willingly touches him. Dream stumbles and almost falls. Wow. This dream seems very complex. There's nothing here besides Alloy and music, but he's remembering many different details from a party that's never happened.
"Alloy, I need you to focus, okay?" Dream stops Alloy and holds him still by the shoulders. "I'm trying to help you. What's the last thing that you can remember?" It's not a good idea to come out and tell Alloy that he's in a dream. It can seriously mess a Monster up.
"The last thing I remember?" Alloy tilts his head, confused at his friend's odd behavior, but then he smirks. "Ohhhhh is this about that gummy spider I put in your shoe last night? Or did Reaper tell you that I knitted all his socks together?"
Dream just blinks, dumbfounded. Has his presence already changed the dream? It doesn't usually happen so fast, and the area around them is still a blank void. Monsters are technically still connected to their memories when asleep. As cruel as it sounds, Dream was hopping that Alloy would remember his...... death. Dream was hoping that he would know when he's coming back or how the others can help.
"Okay, well, could you tell me more about your soul? It's two pieces are very interesting. I'd love to learn more," Dream asks, resorting to a different idea while playing along with the dream.
"Two pieces?" Now Alloy looks at Dream as if he's the one behaving oddly.
"You know. You have your soul, but also the Spark of Creation."
"Oh. I guess I've never thought of them as two separate pieces before."
Alloy still knows no embarrassment. He cups his hand over his chest and then pops his soul out into the open like it's no big deal. Dream lets out a little squeak of surprise, but then steps closer to look. Alloy's soul also looks different now then it did before. It's still a messy blob of many dark colors, but now it looks pristine and untouched, as if it had never been damaged by Fate's strings. Alloy's soul had a faint rainbow sheen from Ink's Spark in the past. Now, the sparks are arranged in two fractured rings that ever so slowly spin around the rest of the soul.
"A-Alloy! It's beautiful," Dream gasps, "I didn't know a soul could have rings like that"
"Don't be silly, Dream. You've seen it before. Normal Monster souls don't handle determination well, so I have to have my Spark in the rings," Alloy explains this as if he's told the other a hundred times.
"The Sparks are determination! That's how Ink survived with out a soul," Dream makes the connection out loud.
"Is Ink another soulless Monster? Like Flowey? What Au is he from?"
"You...... don't know who Ink is? What about Error?"
"Umm.... Am I supposed to?"
Dream is shocked quiet yet again. How does Alloy not remember the Creator and Destroyer? He only exists because they did. Dream is about to question him further, but the dream scape around them shutters. Cracks appear in the whiteness. Alloy is waking up. The Guardian stumbles and nearly falls over. A thump sounds out. When Dream looks back up, Alloy has fallen to his hands knees. The weapons on his back are gone.
"Alloy! Are you okay?" Dream crouches down on one knee, concerned. This isn't normal. Both Alloy's eyes are blank, and he's wearing a terrified expression.
"D-DreaM? You're hEre!?" Alloy stutters, the glitch returning to his voice. "Pl-pleaSe help! I'm iN piEceS. Pieces. whEre aM I?" He's panicky and confused.
"It's gonna be okay, Alloy. It'll be okay. Blue, Nightmare, the gang, and I are all going to bring you back!" Dream tries his best to reassure the other. Alloy grabs onto Dream's arm for comfort like a young babybone. The dream gives another shudder, and Dream feels himself be ripped away as he's flung out of the dream.
He wakes up with a gasp, sweating badly in the same armchair he has fell asleep in. His eyes dart around the room. Blue is sitting on the floor with the soul in his lap. Nightmare is propped up against the headboard, Cross sitting next to him on the bed. All three are staring at Dream.
"Did you find Alloy?" Blue perks up, hopeful.
"I did" Dream breaths out slowly.
"Well? What can we do to help?" Nightmare croaks.
