Chapter Five

When the teleporting ends, all three skeletons do indeed feel sick. The problem is that there is no gravity in the Doodle Sphere. Dream feels pretty grossed and guilty when he sees his magical vomit floating away. They all owe Alloy and apology later.

The Doodle Sphere remains peaceful. A heavy feeling of reverence settles into Dream's bones. This is a sacred place that none of them were ever meant to see. The entire realm radiates a golden glow. Pages and pages of AUs hang throughout the space. Dream twists around to look, and his body drifts in the direction that he had been leading.

"Stop Stop Stop StopStop Stop STOP!" Cross's voice gets progressively higher as he calls out. He's been sent spinning end over end in the non-existent gravity. He's flailing his body all around, only making himself spin more out of control.

"No! Get back here!" Blue shouts. He's starting to figure out how the gravity works, clumsily making a swimming motion in the air. Alloy's soul has escaped its blanket and is now drifting away.

This weightlessness doesn't entirely catch Dream off guard. Ink's told him that it's this way. Plus, Dream has seen lots of things like this in the dreamscape. Calmly, the Guardian shifts his body to float quickly towards Cross. He grabs the other Monster's foot and leans back so that their combined momentum cancel out.

"Just lean in the direction you want to go, kay? We gotta help Blue," Dream explains when Cross is steady. He nods, but Cross is clearly out of his element. He's still very unstable. He wobbles behind Dream in a jerky path.

"Wh-Where are you going!?" Dream's attention snaps back to Blue when he shouts again.

Alloy's soul is on the loose. It's sped up, evading Blue's desperate grabs. How is a soul running away!? Dream swears that Alloy is the only Monster alive, kinda, who would pull off a stunt like this. Cross grabs onto Dream's foot to be pulled along when the Guardian speeds up after Blue. The soul keeps leading them farther and farther from the center of the Doodle Sphere. Blue is giving chasing right on its tail. He's so focused on the multicolored blob that he's not paying attention to where they're going. The soul abruptly vanishes through one of the papers. Blue's eyes widen. He tries to slam on the breaks, but his momentum send him careening though the page as if he had teleported.

Dream and Cross share a worried look. They have no idea what AU is on the other side of that page. Still, Blue and Alloy's soul are both in there. Dream takes a deep breath before diving in, pulling Cross behind. The antigravity is the first to go. Dream face plants onto the hard, grassy hill. He gasps as Cross lands on top of him.

"Got you! Did you really think that you could escape THE MAGNIFICENT BLUE!?" The small skeleton is only a few feet away, having pounced on the soul. It seems to have lost its ability to move. Magic isn't humming in the air as it was in the Doodle Sphere. Blue wraps it up in its blanket to carry it once again.

"Woah......," Cross whistles, "This must be a surface AU. Aren't very many of these around."

Dream looks up at that. The three of them are on the side of a grassy hill on the edge of a valley. A city appears to be nestled in the large basin. No two buildings are in the same style, but Dream thinks he can recognize features from Waterfall, Hotland, and Snowdin all rolled into one Monster city. It's an incredible sight to see. Dream is then hit with a slap of disappointment. They had no time to search the Doodle Sphere for Ink's Spark! They lost their chance. Gaster won't be so cooperative a second time.

"This place is beautiful!" Blue cheers, "I've never heard of this AU before."

"Neither have I," Dream mumbles, and that is very peculiar. Dream has spent enough time around Ink to have heard details about all the AUs. At that moment, a low rumble echos from the city. A beam of black light shoots up near the center of town and dissipates in the sky.

"That was a Gaster Blaster!" Cross catches on immediately.

A Sans must be fighting out in the city streets, but that's not normal. Every AU has their Judgement Hall equivalents. Sans only reveals his true strength in those final rooms. Something must be going horribly wrong. Dream doesn't hesitate to launch into action. His Guardian status is more than a title. Blue and Cross are quick to follow after him. The three use small shortcuts to quicken their pace. Blue almost refuses, but accepts it when he realizes that someone may be in need of his assistance.

It doesn't take long to make it into town. Dream stops shortcutting to take in the city, but he does keep running. It's important to get an idea of what they're getting into. Strangely, the town seems abandoned. No one is out on the streets. The only sign of life is from the growing noise of battle. Blue pulls up more magic while he's running. His Gaster Blaster hammer manifests in his free hand while Cross summons his knife. Dream also brings out his staff when they get closer.

The street abruptly opens up into a town square, and that's where all hell breaks loose. The whole AU's worth of Monsters are gathered here, firing off attacks or just watching. The majority of them are defending a small house on the other side of the square. Dream has no idea who they're attacking until a dark shape shoots up into the sky. Pitch black wings flare open as the Monster steadies to hover in the air. Dream can't believe what he's seeing. Reaper, the God of Death, has actually been here the whole time. He hovers in the air now high above their heads to escape the attacks from a whole AU.

"This is....... not good. Reaper collects plenty of souls after a genocide routes, but then releases them after a reset. This clearly isn't a genocide since all these Monsters seem okay. Who is Reaper after?" Cross wonders.

"We need to stop this! This could be why Alloy's soul brought us here. He wants peace. There's clearly been some sort of bad misunderstanding. We've gotta try to talk to Reaper and calm down whoever's leading this," Dream says.

Blue just nods, accepting the challenge. The crowd is making a lot of noise. Blue is sure he can be even noisier. The small skeleton takes a deep breath before cupping his hands to his mouth. Blue screams out as loud as he can, calling to Reaper. The Death God falters in the air. He thought that he heard his name being called. Reaper looks all around at the ground, weaving briefly around a thrown spear. His searching eyes then find the three skeletons huddled by themselves at the square's edge. Dream's golden outfit is recognizable from anywhere. Reaper isn't exactly friends with him, but Dream is a Guardian. He's a protector of the Multiverse. Reaper twists in the air and falls into a steep dive with his wings pinned to his sides. He's desperate for help.

Dream yelps and ducks. Reaper flies over his head and crashes on the pavement behind them. Blue is quick to rush over to check on him. Many people believe that Reaper's touch kills mortals, but that isn't true. Cross and Dream hurry after and help him sit up. Reaper is in bad condition. He's got scratches and cracks all over his body, and his cloak is torn.

"Reaper! What's going on here? Why are you fighting?" Dream asks frantically.

"I haven't hurt anyone! It's not their time," Reaper snaps, but then he winces and puts a hand to his ribs, "I'm just doing my job, same as Error did. There's a Monster in this AU that can't seem to decide if it's dead or alive. I came to investigate, but I can't get close. These Monsters must know what I am......." Reaper is not cruel. In fact, a death at his hands is often less painful. He offers solace to those who suffer.

"Have you gotten to talk to anyone from this AU? They might not know you're trying to help," Dream says softly. Reaper's job has always created tension between him and the rest of the Multiverse, but as Alloy confirmed, everything needs balance.

Before Reaper can answer, his attention snaps up to something behind them. He growls and raises a hand to send out a small volley of bones. Dream whips his head around to look. A Papyrus of all peoples has charged forwards to continue his challenge on Reaper. They have an ashy pigment on their limbs, but a white skull. He skids to a stop when the bones are sent this way. The Papyrus jerks his arm upwards to summon a defense. Some sort of clear liquid shoots up and hardens incredibly quickly. Reaper's bones shatter on the impact. It's takes Dream a moment to figure out that it's some sort of resin. It's the strangest magic attack he's ever seen!

"LEAVE! There is nothing for you here, God of Death!" the Papyrus snarls.

"Wait! Just wait! I'm sure we can figure this all out peacefully," Dream rushes to stand in between the two .

"Dream?" Papyrus mumbles, surprised.

"What is this AU!?" Cross shouts in bewilderment.

The tensions is slowly draining from Papyrus's stance as he looks closer at the three. Then he spots the small soul held carefully in Blue's protective grasp. "Where do you think? This is BalanceTale."
