Ch 9: A Bad Bean
The longer Elliotes stayed on Earth the more he learned about human behavior. He learned that school for a kindergartener was not the most fun activity. He has been volunteering in Teri's class and learned that she is a bit of a meanie head.
Teri and her classmates would run when they weren't supposed to. They were always constantly screaming, and the most annoying thing they did was feed Elsa human food. Because of this Elsa, the hamster, would vomit and poop on his shrine.
Elliotes was given strict orders that he was not to open Elsa's cage and only Ms. Courtney was allowed to tend to the hamster. Well it was close to the end of the day and she hadn't cleaned the shrine, and he was growing impatient.
Ms. Courtney was busy working on the design for the dance. He didn't know what a dance was, nor did he care to be a part of the planning activities. He wanted her to clean his shrine.
"Want some candy, Ellie?" Teri offered.
Elliotes looked down at Teri and smiled. "Yes, young priestess."
Teri gave Elliotes some freshly cleaned jelly beans. After a long talk with her mother about not putting dirty candy in her mouth she takes the time to wash Elliotes candy with soap before giving it to him.
Elliotes surveyed the jelly beans before eating them. He was beginning to wonder if the spiritual energy was worth eating these random colorful beans. He decided to put it in his pocket and save it for later. He wasn't feeling the best and feared that the jelly bean, like Teri's other specialty-prepared meals, would make him feel sick.
"Here you go, Elsa."
Elliotes never questioned why Teri would feed Elsa jelly beans. It was the highest of offerings after all. He knew that Elsa needed all of the spiritual energy possible to guard his shrine.
After Elsa ate the jelly bean she promptly threw up on his shrine.
"You know what you stupid little-"
"Elli," Teri whined. "That is a bad word."
Elliotes took a deep breath. If this was the way that the beast was to guard his shrine it was annoying.
When the bell rang to end the day Teri darted out of the classroom before he had the chance to talk to Ms. Courtney. He would have to trust that she would clean the cage before she would leave for the end of the day.
With each passing day, Elliotes grew more and more tired. Being Teri's bodyguard became a full-time job, and protecting her and her class in their sleep was becoming a chore.
"Can we play Spa when we get home?" Teri asked as she skipped ahead.
"Yes, priestess."
Elliotes was given the task by Monica to walk Teri home from school. She was able to work a little later at work. He did not know why she would want to do that instead of spending more time with young Teri, but she needed money and the work provided it.
"I know where Mommy hides the makeup." Teri sang as she skipped ahead.
Elliotes walked through the familiar path of the park. He walked this path with the girls every day when they came home from school.
"Excuse me, sir."
Elliotes ignored the voice as he continued to walk behind Teri. It was only when he felt a tug on his arm that he turned to see a much smaller man. Teri quickly ran to Elliotes and grabbed his hand. She immediately recognized this man as the one who yelled at her the day she went to the moo-zam.
"Do you have a moment?" Willard said to Elliotes. "I am a friend of her mommy. She asked me to pick you up from school."
Teri gripped Elliotes hand. She remembered a similar stranger danger exercise. She remembers mommy stating that if it's not Ms. Courntey or Ms. Yessika they weren't her friends. She was not allowed to take candy from anyone. She was not allowed to go help people look for lost puppies, or kitties, or any other cute animals. If they don't say the password she was not allowed to leave with them.
She doesn't think Elli knows these rules though.
"My mommy wouldn't have sent you."
"Quiet child, adults are talking." Willard said, silencing Teri. "Monica said I could take you both out to eat."
"We're not hungry." Teri lied. She was very hungry, but Willard was a meanie head.
"Be nice Teri," Elliotes said. He wasn't feeling too well and maybe some human food would be beneficial. "Where did you wish to eat?"
"My house."
Teri began to panic and pull on Elliotes. This was not something either of them were allowed to do.
"Your house?" Elliotes questioned. "Why?"
"I have good food."
"Our house has good food," Teri added. "Our house also has Mommy."
"We don't want your mother there."
"Why?" Elliotes questioned. The "why" game has officially begun
"Don't you want a bros' day?" Willard tried to convince Elliotes.
Elliotes didn't know what a guys' day was. All he knew was that standing was beginning to get more difficult. Elliotes sat on the ground as he placed both his hands on his head. Maybe Monica was right, he was overworking himself.
He felt Teri lean against his back, gripping onto his shirt. "Elli please." Teri whimpered.
"You don't look so good. Want me to take Teri home." Willard offered. "Then we can have a boys' day."
Elliotes was too weak to notice. He heard the faint screams of Teri screaming as she was pulled from his back. The world around him went dark.
Every God has a weakness, look at Achilles and his heel. Usually, their weakness is heavily protected with armor or even guarded by a vicious beast. Elliotes did not know what caused his sudden fatigue, but he knew he was powerless. He wished how he would have just eaten that jelly bean.
"Elli help!"
He heard Teri's screams of terror as she got further away from him. He daydreamed about having the strength to run to Teri's rescue.
"Elliotes? Is that you brother?"
A calmness rushed over his body. Other than his mother there was only one other voice that made him feel this safe.
"Yes sister, please listen to my prayers."
