Ch 6: Two Types of Men
Monica quickly clocked out of her job at the hospital, as she quickly grabbed her tiny backpack, and went running out down the hallway. She didn't even have time to change out of her bloodstained green scrubs as she exited the hospital. She got so caught up in the moment of delivering her baby, that she almost forgot about hers.
Almost.
At the prime age of 25, running was more of a hobby than anything. One of her favorite bonding times with Teri when she was a baby, was running through the park pushing her in the stroller. They would run past the lake and see the ducks and feed the fish. They would pick wildflowers, and learn about bugs.
Except for ladybugs. Even though Teri did not fear them at first, Monica's irrational fear might have accidentally gotten passed down.
Without breaking her stride Monica removed her shirt revealing her black spaghetti-strap tank top. She ran this trail several times and now she has every crack and stray rock memorized. She ignored the cat calls from the random men as she cut through the park. Dating was not even a second thought, her one and only goal was getting to the school before the pickup time closes.
Before Monica could exit the park she felt a tight grasp on her arm that pulled her back. She actually fell into the arms of the unknown. A sharp scream left her mouth, and it was followed by a deeper, more terrified scream.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Willard said. "I just wanted to see if you remembered me."
Monica quickly stood up and looked over at Willard. "Who are you and why are you touching me?" Monica asked. Let's cut the crap, no man should be grabbing girls at the park randomly.
Monica looked the man up and down. He wore a space T-shirt and had wet curly golden brown hair. He was on the thinner side, and she knew if she had to she could take this man in a fight.
"Monica, right? It's me, Willard." Her blank stare was enough of an answer for him. She did not remember. "I was the guy working at the museum when you stole the shrine."
"I didn't steal anything." Monica shot back.
"It's okay. I deleted the only evidence that there was."
Monica turned to walk away before. Willard grabbed her arm again. "You should be thanking me."
"For what, making me late to pick up my daughter."
"Forget your daughter for a second."
Monica pulled her arm away from Willard hard. It took all of her energy not to punch him in the throat. He got the hint and took a step back.
"You guys stole an artifact that belonged to the museum. Since no one seems to care I was wondering if you could give me half of the artifact."
"Are you referring to the shrine?" Monica asked.
"I want to know what came out of the shrine," Willard said as he took out his phone. He showed Monica a picture of her being carried out of the museum by Elliotes. "I want him."
Monica let out a sigh of relief. "Oh thank God. You're gay. I really thought I was in danger."
"I'm not gay!" Willard snapped.
"There is nothing wrong with it. Elliotes is a good-looking man." Monica said with a laugh as she started walking away.
Willard ran in front of her to stop her. "I like women. If anyone is good looking it is you."
"You can't go from harassment to blackmailing to a poor attempt at flattering," Monica said as she pushed by Willard. "I am not stopping you from talking to the guy. He is not my property."
"He is the property of the museum."
"He is a person, he is no one's property." Monica snapped back.
Willard slid his phone into his pocket. He averted his eyes so he no longer looked into Monica's. "I just want to meet the guy. You have to understand that this is a rare occurrence that is being swept under the rug, and the scientist in me is curious."
Monica checked her phone for the time. It was getting late and this guy was getting annoying. She knew that he was not going to leave her alone, and she did not want him to see where her daughter went to school. She also didn't like the fact that he has a picture of her daughter on his phone.
"You said that you deleted the evidence from the museum?"
"Yes. Why?"
"Thank you. I don't really know who Elliotes is, but he seems to be behind on time, but I really have to go pickup my daughter. If you want we can trade numbers."
Willard smiled as he quickly dug into his pocket and pulled out his phone. As the two exchanged phones Monica went into Willard's picture folder. After ignoring the unsolicited manly photo that some poor girl is going to receive against her will in the future, she deleted the photo of her, Elliotes, and Teri from Willard's phone.
"I saved my phone under Monica the Museum Girl," Monica said as she handed Willard back his phone.
"I saved mine as Big Daddy Will." Willard said proudly.
"Changing it to Science Creep Will." Monica said as she got her phone back.
Monica quickly said goodbye as she started to run towards the school. By the time she reached the school's gates they were locked and there were no cars in the parking lot. Monica looked around frantically.
Where is her baby? How could they leave her alone at the school?
As Monica began to climb the fence she heard little footsteps running towards her. "Mommy!" Teri screamed. Monica jumped down from the fence and quickly hugged Teri.
"I am so sorry," Monica said to Teri. "I will never be late again."
Teri brushed off Monica's apology quickly. There was something more pressing at hand. "Elli is stuck in the tree."
Elli?
Monica looked over and saw Elliotes in a tall orange groove tree. The tree was on the outside of the school however it grew over the fence towards the school. Elliotes had one of his hands full of oranges.
"Elliotes! Get done from there!" Monica screamed at Elliotes.
"I cannot. The priestess asked for 100 oranges." Elliotes yelled back.
"She is five. She can't even count to 100."
Elliotes began to ignore Monica as he continued to collect oranges.
"Pick a more realistic number." Monica ordered.
"Five!" Teri yelled.
Elliotes paused. He quickly counted the oranges that he had in his possession. "Is that what you really want, priestess?"
"For your safety and hers, yes." Monica said very annoyed.
Elliotes jumped out of the tree with exactly five oranges. He gave them to a very happy Teri. Monica's annoyance was quickly wiped away when she saw the smile on both Teri's and Elliotes' faces.
