Ch 1: Highest of Offerings
"Mommy I don't wanna go to the moo-zam!"
"You begged me to go though, Teri."
Reality struck the world's most favorite five-year-old as she stood in front of the Museum of Science and History. Teri was under the impression that the moo-zam was a show about magical cows, instead, she is stuck spending her weekend away from kindergarten learning.
Teri even dressed up nicely for the cows. She wore her long blond hair down, and her favoritest pink dress with matching shoes. She wanted to stick out so they would notice her and moo loudly. She was clearly tricked.
"I wanted to see cows?"
"I am sure there is an animal exhibit somewhere? Let's cut through the space section first."
Her mommy wasn't really her mommy yet she was. Teri doesn't know the details, but her mommy looks nothing like her. She was white, and her mom was brown. Her hair was blond and mommy's hair was black. Something about a judge, paperwork, nonsense: all Teri knew was that she was given to her mommy by the stroke.
Mommy was a busy lady too. She takes time to fix everyone's owies, and I mean a lot of time. So, mommy-daughter days are very important. How dare mommy trick her? The moo-zam is not a cow magic show, it's a school away from school.
"You lied to me!" Teri cried as she began to drag her feet on the ground. "Cows mommy." She wept.
"I said we are going to a museum. I said there might be cows." Teri's mom said. She looked down to see Teri fighting back her tears. "Want some rainbow jelly beans, while we look for the animals."
Teri began to jump around her mother, as she fished a pack of candy out of her purse. Teri was overjoyed when she was handed a package of rainbow jelly beans. She loved the different colors and flavors. She barely even noticed when her mother grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the space section.
Teri fought to free herself from her mother's hand. How was she supposed to eat the jelly beans if she was held captive? After a brief struggle and a conversation full of whines, she was finally freed.
This jelly bean bag was way bigger than the ones she had eaten before. This was a bag for a teenager. Could she really eat all these jelly beans?
"Hey Teri, look at that meteorite. It looks like a tiny house."
Teri looked in the opposite direction her mother had pointed. She saw several deformed rocks that sat upon a fountain. Inside the fountain held various coins, due to the public throwing them in. Rumor has it that the coins hold wishes and dreams. Just wasted toy money.
"That ma'am is the Shrine of Times." A gentleman said as he walked up towards Teri's mother. "Hi, I am Willard."
He was wearing a red hoodie with black pants. The strange man attempted to shake Teri's mom's hand, however, the mother grabbed Teri and pulled her closer to her.
"Sorry, I work here. You probably can't tell because of my jacket."
"It's October. In Florida. You can see my concern."
It was strange that a grown man was wearing a thick jacket in the Florida weather, but the days or hot and the nights get chilly so there could be a method to his current madness.
Willard just laughed. "Well, Ms.?"
"Monica."
"I'm Teri!" The young child cheered attempting to join the conversation.
"Babysitting?" Willard asked.
"This is my daughter." Monica answered.
"And this is getting awkward."
"Can I take the money from the fountain?" Teri asked, probably saving Willard from an awkward conversation about judging people by their looks.
Willard looked over at the meteorites and then back at the shrine. "Would you rather learn about the meteorites or the shrine?"
"What's a sher-ime?" Teri asked.
"Tiny house." Her mom answered.
"It's not a tiny house." Willard snapped. "It's a shrine that fell from the heavens. Blessed upon us by Father Time himself 2000 years ago."
As Willard went on with a bunch of information Teri didn't care about she took in the tiny house. It had this pale glow that the adults didn't really see. The tiny house sat on a smaller counter with water surrounding it. The other rocks had money in their fountain, yet the tiny house had nothing. Teri turned around and started running towards the meteorites with the full plan of stealing money out of their fountain and giving it to the tiny house.
"Teri! Where are you going?"
"To get the monies!"
Before Teri reached her destination her hand was pulled back by her mom. Teri was forced to walk back towards the tiny house.
"But mommy, the tiny house." Teri whined.
"Stealing is wrong girly." Her mom soothed. "We can bring the tiny house something next time."
Little did mommy know, Teri had no intention of coming back. Teri quickly threw some jelly beans at the shrine.
"What are you doing? You are tainting the shrine!" Willard screamed at Teri.
Teri's eyes began to fill with tears. The mama bear instinct kicked in as her mother screamed back. "Rainbow Jelly Beans are her favorite candy. This is the highest of all offerings that a five-year-old can give. And if you ever raise your voice at my child again-"
Before Teri's mom could finish her sentence black smoke began to exit the tiny shrine.
"Did you say the highest of offerings?" A deep voice came from the shrine.
Both Monica and Willard were stunned. Monica quickly grabbed Teri.
"Yes. Rainbow jelly beans." Teri cried.
A bright light came from the shrine before the entire museum was filled with black smoke. Through the smoke, a man appeared holding the shrine. From his back, full-size wings grew before disappearing.
"Mommy, did you see that?"
Teri's question went unanswered as the fire alarm sounded throughout the museum. Teri felt her mother pick her up and held her close to her chest. People were screaming, someone called her a demon. She knew she was scared. She heard her mom yell unfamiliar words and dared someone to touch her child.
Chaos quickly filled the museum as her mother tried to escape with her. Teri closed her eyes and tried to think of a happier place. Tried to think of the safety of her home, of her bed.
"Hey, don't cry." Teri heard an unknown voice say. Teri opened her eyes and desperately looked around but couldn't see where the voice was coming from.
"Want me to get you out of here?" The strange voice asked again.
Teri nodded as she clutched onto her mother. Black smoke still filled the air making it hard to breathe. A strong gust of wind flew through the museum knocking most of the smoke away from Teri and her mother.
Standing in the clearance was an unknown man holding the tiny shrine. He had blonde hair and blue eyes that resembled hers. Standing in only white pants. Having no shoes and no shirt was not the problem. The problem was coming from his back which was a set of rainbow wings.
"I'm Elliotes, God of Empty Dreams, and your offering has freed me."
Poor Teri was at the mercy of her mother, Monica who was unable to handle this sight or news and fainted.
