Chapter Twenty-Eight

Arang woke up and rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand. Yawning, she managed to find her way to the bathroom half-asleep. She turned the faucet on and let the water run for a minute as her head bobbed back and forth. She had the strangest nightmare and she was relieved that she had finally broken free from it. Cupping her hands underneath the cold water, Arang splashed her face with the icy liquid in order to wake herself up. Her nightmare you wonder?

Well she had dreamed that she had gone on national television and lied to the entire country about being in a relationship with the ever so maddening Kim Taehyung. And if that wasn't enough, the boy had been nice to her! He had brought her home and helped her set up the table for dinner! Kim Taehyung having supper with her family? As if. The girl shook her head at the idea. There's no way she'd allow something like that to happen.

After she had freshened up, Arang exited the bathroom. She scavenged the refrigerator for something edible because she was starving. Why was she so hungry? Next Saeyoung skipped out of her room, spinning and twirling around as though she was in la-la land. A jolly tune was being hummed and Arang turned to look at her sister. "What's gotten into you?" She questioned. Without warning the younger girl enveloped Arang in her arms and gave her a tight squeeze.

"You've worked hard, unnie." She mused as she thoughtlessly patted Arang's head.

Arang pursed her lips out while creases formed on her forehead. Why was Saeyoung acting weirder than usual? Especially so early in the morning? Smoothing her hair, Arang returned to her room still baffled. She flopped onto her bed and landed on her stomach, her face buried between the sheets. Why were her feet hurting? Suddenly a perky beat started bouncing off of the walls. She recognized it to be a verse from Girls' Generation hit song Oh! which had been released back in 2010.

Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Opparul saranghae. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Mani mani hae. Sujubuni jebal utji mayo. Jinshimini nollijido marayo. Tto babo gatun mal punnya~

Arang wasn't a fan of theirs; their concepts and style didn't suit her taste. So where was the music coming from?  Her eyes scanned the room and she got up, curling her hair behind her ear. She was listening to the line being repeated over and over again and was trying to use her ears to help locate the source. Finally she discovered that the music had been coming from her bag. More precisely from her phone? With furrowed brows she stared at the caller who was listed under the name: My Beloved Oppa

"Who the heck?" Reluctantly Arang slid the green icon across the screen and held the device to her ear. "Hello? Who is this?" She questioned immediately. Last time Arang checked she didn't have anyone listed as oppa in her contacts. This was the first time she's seen something like this. Was someone pulling a prank on her? Saeyoung perhaps? It would explain her odd behavior from earlier.

"Do you like what I did?" A familiar voice teased over the line. There was no way. "Now I have your number and you have mine. We won't have to rely on emailing anymore."

"Kim Taehyung?" Arang's jaw slacked open in utter disbelief. When did he have the time to insert his information into her phone and set that ringtone?

The boy clucked his tongue and snapped his fingers, "Bingo." He confirmed. "I think the personalized ringtone was a nice touch. Don't you think?"

What was going on? "Yah, when did you take my phone? I don't recall ever leaving it alone with you. How did you even figure out my passcode?"

"Easy," Taehyung declared. "Aesook told me. After dinner last night she had wanted to play games. So thinking on my toes, I told her that my phone didn't have any games on it and we should use yours instead. You can guess what happened after that part right?"

"Wait, after dinner?" She repeated. Oh no. Don't tell her that the nightmare she had was all real! Arang rushed out into the living room and turned the television on. She fumbled back and fell onto the couch. She had tuned into the entertainment channel and all she saw were pictures of herself and her so-called boyfriend during the press conference. The events from yesterday ran through her head like a short horror montage and the remote in her possession slipped from her hand and landed on the floor. So every single thing she thought was part of her dream had actually happened?

"Hello?" Taehyung didn't hear anything but the reporters talking.

Still stunned, Arang slowly lifted her phone as she stared at the television screen. "Y-yah Kim Taehyung, did we really go on national television last night?"

"Of course," he confirmed immediately. "Are you feeling okay? You fell asleep before you got to have dinner. You should eat a big breakfast to fill that gigantic appetite of yours. You must be starving."

"Yah!" Arang shouted as she jumped to her feet. "Do you think eating is what's important right now?" She started to pace back and forth, her free hand clawing at her scalp. "I can't believe I agreed to do that. I must have lost my sanity."

"Noona, why are you yelling?" Younghae came out of his room, scratching his head.

"Nothing. It's nothing." Arang babbled, fleeing to her room. What had she done?

"Why are you overreacting?" She heard Taehyung query.

"Are you serious?" She hissed into her phone. She made sure to keep her voice low enough so that nobody in her house would be able to hear what she was saying.  "We went on national television and lied our asses off. National television. What if someone finds out that we tricked them? I'll never be able to show my face without getting attacked by your fans." A burst of laughter erupted from the boy. "Is this a joke to you? I'm being serious." She growled.

"I know you are and it's amusing. I never thought I'd live to see the day when the stubborn and almighty So Arang would be freaking out like a normal teenager." He taunted. Unbelievable. Even when he wasn't really there, he still managed to irk her. How was that possible?

"I'm not finding this situation funny at all. You're useless. I'm hanging up now." Arang huffed, ending the call just as she had promised. She looked at the name Taehyung had audaciously put himself under and scoffed. "Oppa?" She exhaled through her nostrils to try and control her anger. They were the same age! What was he thinking? Clicking on the edit option, Arang was about to change his name when a text message from the devil himself popped up onto her screen.

Don't you dare switch my name, So Arang. I already showed it to your brother and sisters to prove to them how in love we are. If you do and they see it, they'll know something's wrong.

Arang's fingers curled into a fist and she clenched her jaw. Taehyung was right. If one of her siblings saw that she had altered his name after he had already revealed to them what she supposedly had him saved as, they would question her until she provided them with a reasonable explanation. Begrudgingly she decided to listen to him.

You're a dead man the next time I see you, Kim Taehyung.

Again the girl threw herself onto her bed. This time her face was pressed into a pillow as she screamed to her heart's content, her legs flailing wildly into the air. Why did this have to happen to her out of all people? Her phone pinged and she flipped over to her back.

Then I guess I should call my mom and tell her to arrange my funeral for tomorrow. Didn't you hear? We're taking the kids out on a date with us today.

Her eyes doubled in size as she furiously typed out her reply.

            What kids?

A minute later she received another message.

The ones living with you. Duh. Isn't that obvious?

Wanting to know what was going on Arang called Taehyung. She was too impatient to be waiting for his texts. After the fourth ring he answered. "What do you mean by we're taking the kids out on a date with us today? I don't remember making plans with you that involved my siblings. I never even made plans with just the two of us."

"I know you don't because I made them last night while you were passed out in your room." Taehyung declared. "Your parents were reminiscing about the good old days. You know, before they had all of you. They said they were envious of us because we could still go out without having to worry about much. They seemed sad. I felt bad and told them we would watch over the kids so that they could go out on a nice date and have some fun. Was that wrong of me? Should I not have done that?"

His questions at the end didn't sound hostile or negative. It seemed like he was sincerely curious if he had done the right thing or not. Hearing his reason, the fury that had built up inside of Arang quickly dissipated. Her parents never told her that. If they wanted to have dates night she could have stayed home and watched her siblings. They did so much for them, the least she could do was return the favor. "What'd you have in mind?" She sighed.

Taehyung's face brightened up with a smile as he sat up. "How about a trip to the zoo and then some lunch?"

There was a pause. "Sure why not." Arang agreed. "But wouldn't it be risky?

"There shouldn't be too many people there around this time. I'm sure we'll be fine. I'll be there in an hour or two." He informed. The call ended and elated, Taehyung fell back onto his bed with his arms spread wide. He looked at the ceiling while nibbling on his bottom lip.

It was a quiet at first when Taehyung had returned, telling everyone that Arang would not be joining them for dinner. Her parents didn't press the matter any further since they knew it must have been an exhausting day for her. Usually Saeyoung kept the family entertained as she ranted on about random stuff but tonight it was as though someone had yanked her vocal chords out. She was very conscious of her actions and Younghae couldn't help but scoff. The atmosphere was only awkward because they were making it that way.

If Taehyung was dating his sister that meant he was part of their family now. There was no reason for Younghae to be formal and polite like his twin sister. He was going to treat the idol like a normal person. "Hyung, aren't you going to eat?" Saeyoung's mouth fell open and she resembled a fish out of water. Under the table she pinched her brother's thigh which caused him to yelp. "What'd you do that for?"

"Do what?" She had on a tight smile. How could he even think he could address Taehyung like that? They weren't close! It was disrespectful!

Younghae rolled his eyes and returned his attention back to Taehyung. "I can call you that, can't I?"

"I don't see why not," the older male shrugged.

"Ah sweetie. Do you remember when we were young?" Mrs. So gushed at the memories. "We had so much fun. We went on dates everywhere. Too bad we can't do that anymore."

"It's part of being an adult, honey. Besides, we have our children to give us joy." Mr. So chuckled, pinching Eunmi's cheek.

A light bulb went off in his head. "That's not necessarily true." Taehyung rejected politely. "I mean you two could still go on dates if you wanted to. How about this. Tomorrow why don't Arang and I take the kids with us while you two go out and enjoy yourselves?"

Mr. and Mrs. So looked at each other, flabbergasted. "Oh no, dear. We couldn't ask you to do that for us. Arang is probably working tomorrow to and you must be busy since you're an idol and all." The woman pointed out.

"It's no problem at all. I don't mind spending some time with them." He assured as he ruffled Aesook's hair.

"But—"

"I like that idea!" Saeyoung crooned eagerly. She couldn't contain herself anymore. "Mom, dad. Do as oppa says. We'll be fine on our own." She prodded.

"Oppa?" Younghae snorted.

His sister snapped her head his way and glared at him. "If you can call him hyung I should be able to call him oppa. It's only fair, right oppa?" Taehyung laughed and nodded his head. "See." She huffed, sticking her nose up into the air.

"It's settled then. Tomorrow I'll swing by and pick them up." Taehyung announced.
