Chapter Thirty-Four
"What'd I miss?" Taehyung questioned as he handed Jungkook a bag of peas. He glanced up at Arang when he didn't receive a response and she motioned him to abandon the vicinity with her. Saeyoung and her long lost companion were seated at the dining table. They were stationed directly across from each other, their gazes locked. The young girl had a fierce expression while the boy tried to match her.
In the next room, the other members were stacked up on top of each other, attempting to eavesdrop on the conversation. Unfortunately for them nobody had uttered a word yet. When Arang and Taehyung turned the corner and were greeted with the sight of a poorly constructed human tower, they shook their heads and ushered the boys away.
Taehyung then dragged Arang to his room. He closed the door and spun around. "Now can you tell me what's going on?"
"It's a long story." Arang sighed. "You should probably ask Jungkook to explain the situation after we leave."
"He personally knows Sae, doesn't he?" Taehyung guessed. "That kid. I knew he was acting a little strange. Oh shit. Did they use to date or something? My mom's going to go crazy if another scandal occurs. She's already got enough on her plate. I don't think she'll be able to handle another incident like ours. What are the odds? It just had to be your sister."
Arang restrained herself from slapping the boy on the side of the head. "No idiot. They didn't date. Sae is far too young and smart for that kind of stuff. She's got more important matters to cater to, like her education."
"You might never know; anything could happen. Just look at us. Who would have thought that we'd be in the same room, talking like normal human beings instead of wringing each other's neck? Not me. Besides, Jungkook is also a handsome and talented guy. A lot of our fans are infatuated with him. Some of them even call him the noona-killer. That's how good he is." Taehyung declared proudly.
"Keep talking and in a minute I'll be strangling you. Long story short, they were friends before Jungkook debuted. However, at the time Saeyoung knew him as Cookie and she thought that he was a little girl."
It was silent for thirty seconds before he broke out into a maniacal laugh. "Damn, no wonder she's pissed. Jungkook is screwed, isn't he?" Arang punched his arm. "Ow! What was that for?"
"It's not funny. Be quiet." She commanded.
"Oh come on. Give me a break. It's been an exhausting day for me." He huffed.
Rolling her eyes, she pushed by him and grabbed onto the handle. "I'm leaving." She announced. Just as she was about to open the door, Taehyung latched onto her wrist and yanked her back. "What are you doing?" Arang gasped as she collided into his chest. She tried to detach herself from him but failed. His arms were now wrapped securely around her body, making an escape impossible for her.
His chin sat in the crook of her neck as he closed his eyes and basked in her warmth. "No seriously. I've had a really hard day. Can't we stay like this for a while? I'm... I'm begging you, So Arang." Usually the girl would attack him but the solemn tone laced in his voice caused her heart to waver. She'd think of it as charity work. So without another word, she stood there in Taehyung's embrace. Who would have thought that there'd be a day where she wasn't ready to slaughter him for touching her? She definitely didn't.
"That punch was unnecessary." Jungkook deadpanned as he held the package of frozen veggies to his jaw.
"I disagree. I should have beaten the living daylights out of you." Saeyoung hissed. "You were a boy. Didn't you think it would have been nice to tell me that?"
Jungkook tossed the bag down and leaned forward. "Hey, you were the one who jumped to conclusions on your own, not me. Everyone knew I was a freaking boy back then. It was pretty damn obvious. It's not my fault you assumed I was a girl. No wonder you would always hold my hand and bring me everywhere." He scoffed. "I thought you had a crush on me or something."
Saeyoung's face reddened while her body temperature shot through the roof. "Shut up." She ordered angrily. "You looked like a girl with your lame bowl cut and baggy clothes. Plus your voice was extremely high and your nickname sounded rather feminine. Just ask anyone. They'd tell you the same thing."
"It's because I didn't hit puberty yet, duh. And nobody else thought it sounded feminine. Hello, my name is Jungkook. The Kook part is where they got Kookie from. Geez, I see you're still slow now as you were when we were younger." Jungkook snickered, relaxing against his chair with a smug smirk on his face. "I'm surprised you're not in a cast. You were accident prone, always running into things and falling flat on your face."
Saeyoung was almost at her limit. She wanted to jump across the table and choke him. When did he get so irritating? The Cookie she remembered was actually cool. "I was not always running into things and I only fell on my face twice. Stop exaggerating." She snapped.
"Oh please. Everyone at the dance academy called you a walking disaster. I've got to hand it to you though. Your skills have improved a lot compared to the last time I saw you. You didn't even know how to count the beats properly and now look at you." Was that supposed to be a compliment? Because if it was Saeyoung didn't find anything he said flattering.
"You know what? I'm done talking to you. You're a really petty person, Jeon Jungkook. All of this time you've been giving me the cold shoulder because I couldn't recognize you? How childish. If I knew you were going to act like a jerk then I wouldn't have bothered trying to figure out who you were." Saeyoung scooted her chair back and stood up. "And let's not forget one thing here." She whirled around and peered over her shoulder. "You weren't the one who got left behind."
Jungkook became paralyzed as his brain computed her words. She was right. Guilt immediately began to gnaw at his insides. This was not the outcome he desired. At one point So Saeyoung had been his best friend. He told her everything. His dreams. His problems. His likes and dislikes. His biggest fears. She had knowledge of all of it. There were no secrets between the two of them except for one. It wasn't his intention to lash out her like that.
He thought she was going to be happy once she realized who he was but due to some misunderstandings, things took a different route. How was he supposed to know that she had assumed he was a girl? Although the more he thought about it, the more it started to make sense. Saeyoung had never been shy about skinship while they were together and of course he found it strange but now that he knew why she was so comfortable around him, everything clicked.
If anyone should be upset, it would be Saeyoung. He was the one who disappeared without a word. He was the one who left her behind. Maybe this was karma. Maybe he deserved that punch. All he wanted was for her to recall his identity. "Where's Sae?" Arang looked around but wasn't able to locate the younger girl.
"What?" Jungkook broke away from his train of thoughts and stared at the older girl.
"My sister. Where'd she go? What did you guys talk about?" There was no reply. To strangers Saeyoung might seem rash and reckless. However, Arang knew her sister like the back of her hand. She might not show it often, but Saeyoung was the sensitive type. She got hurt easily. She's always been that way. "Yah! Don't you hear me asking you something?" She snarled.
"Hey, calm down." Said Taehyung as he placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Don't tell me what to do!" Arang scowled as she tore herself from his touch. "If anything happens to her, you're dead, kid. You've hurt her once already. Isn't that enough? I refuse to let you do it again." Arang rushed over to the door. Saeyoung's shoes were gone which meant she was too.
Taehyung chased after her. "Where are you going?"
"What does it look like?" She sniggered. "I'm going to look for her. I don't like leaving her alone, especially when she's troubled."
"Well then I'm coming with you." He declared, slipping into his sneakers.
Arang didn't have time to waste and allowed him to join. The door slammed shut and Jungkook flinched. "Wow," Hoseok whispered as they all exchanged worried glances.
"Should we head out and search for her as well?" Seokjin queried.
Namjoon shook his head. "This has nothing to do with us." He answered.
"But I like Saeyoung." Yoongi pouted. "I don't want something bad to happen to her. You saw how upset she was. She looked like a completely different person."
"Hyung is right. This isn't our business. Jungkook has to be the one that patches things up with her." Jimin muttered.
Suddenly they heard the legs of a chair screeching against the wooden floor. They peeked around the corner and saw Jungkook fumbling to put his shoes on. "I'll be back later. Don't wait up for me!" He hollered before he exited the dorm.
Arang and Taehyung ran around the neighborhood but there was no sign of Saeyoung. Her phone was off which was not helping Arang's anxiety. The sun disappearing was another factor. Sure, Saeyoung was old enough to care of herself but she was still her baby sister. It was in her nature to worry about the people she loved. An hour had gone by and Saeyoung was still missing. Arang called Younghae to see if she might have gone home.
To her dismay, her brother hadn't seen or heard from his twin either. This was not like her. She would never run off without a word. Whatever happened with Jungkook must have taken a grave toll on her.
"What if something awful happened to her?" She panicked, raking her slender fingers through her hair. The horrific and endless possibilities flashed into her mind and the initial fear she had intensified.
Taehyung held onto her shoulders and gazed into her eyes. "Don't think like that." He stated, trying to calm her down. "Saeyoung is going to be fine. She's a big girl. She can handle herself. Have you ever thought that maybe she doesn't want to be found right now? Perhaps some alone time is what she needs. I think that we should head back to the dorm and wait for her to call you once she's ready."
Infuriated, Arang shoved his arms away. "How would you know what she's thinking?" She shouted. "You—you don't know anything about us!" She didn't mean to yell at him. Her emotions were just starting to get the best of her.
"I could ask you the same thing," Taehyung retorted. "You're not Sae, Arang. You might be her older sister but that doesn't mean you know every single thought that creeps into her mind. I know you're scared; I am too. But we have to trust her. Do you understand?" She did. "Now come on. Let's head back."
Meanwhile, across town Jungkook was heading towards a place no one else knew about. It was located somewhere in the woods, near his old house. If you didn't know where you were going, it was easy to get lost. Jungkook was accustomed to the area though since he grew up there. It was dark out so he had to use his phone as a flashlight. When he arrived at the treehouse, his chest deflated in relief. Inside he could see a glowing light.
"Why are you here?" Saeyoung mumbled as Jungkook entered the small structure.
"To look for you." He replied. "I remember you liked coming here whenever you were sad. I'm sorry."
She turned his way. "Why are you sorry? I was the one who misunderstood everything."
Jungkook sat down with his legs crossed. "I'm sorry because I'm the reason you're sad. I broke my promise and instead of making amends, I acted like a douche towards you. I didn't mean to. I was just upset because you weren't able to recognize me right away. Can you forgive me, Sae?"
"No, I can't," she replied. His heart clenched and she continued. "Do you know how confused and terrified I was? Because of you I thought I had romantic feelings for a girl."
