Chapter Thirty-Eight
Arang entered the practice room, a bag filled with beverages hidden behind her back. Creases formed on her forehead as soon as she realized that the only other person present was Taehyung. "It's about time you got here." He jogged up to her, sweat blanketing his skin. "I'm parched. What'd you get me?" His breathing was ragged. It was obvious that he had been dancing non-stop.
"Where's everyone else?" She queried, ignoring his question.
"They left to grab lunch." He reported.
The girl quirked a brow as she eyed him from head to toe. "Why didn't you go with them?"
Taehyung shook his head and combed his lightly dampened hair with his fingers. "I couldn't. We're practicing a new choreography and I keep messing up on this one part. I have to nail the routine before they return or else the dance won't look right. So can I have my drink now?"
Sucking her teeth, Arang shoved the bag into his hands and glared at him. "This is a onetime deal. I'm not your errand girl. Don't expect me to do this for you ever again. Do I make myself clear, Kim Taehyung?"
"We'll see. Whoa, why'd you buy so much?" Taehyung balked as he rifled through the bag for a flavor he'd enjoy.
"I thought the rest of the guys would be here." She shrugged. "It's called being fair. I don't want them to think I favor you more."
"It wouldn't have mattered. They wouldn't have cared if you only brought a drink for me. Okay, maybe Yoongi hyung would have been a little jealous, but he's always like that. It's called being a good girlfriend." He reasoned logically. Uncapping the Triple X Vitamin Water, Taehyung chugged down half of the bottle in less than ten seconds. Once he was content, he closed the bottle and wiped his lips with the back of his hand. "Ahhh, that was good."
Then Arang stuck her palm out. "Aren't you forgetting something?"
"Oh right. Thanks." He slapped her hand and sauntered away.
"That's not what I meant." She huffed, chasing after him. "Don't you think you should reimburse me?"
He looked at her, amused. "Why would I do that? I didn't force you to buy all of this. You did it out of your own free will." He pointed out with an arrogant smirk.
"Fine, whatever. I'm going now. Don't call me unless it's an emergency or else I'm going to block you." Arang warned before she swiveled around on her heels and exited the room. She was making her way toward the elevator when her phone started to ring. It was Taehyung. Extremely annoyed and patronized, she picked up. "What part of don't call me unless it's an emergency, didn't you comprehend?" She snarled.
"But this is an emergency." Taehyung defended. "I'm starving."
"Yah!" Arang screamed into the phone, almost causing him to go deaf in one ear. Her blood pressure was through the roof because of him. "You're really thick-skinned! Deal with it yourself. I am not going to buy you food!" With her veins protruding out, she hung up and grinded her teeth. How was she supposed to get food for him with an empty wallet? Taehyung would have to figure things out for himself. Wasn't it enough that she had bought him his stupid fruity drink? Why was he so needy?
"Who said I wanted you to buy me food?" Taehyung hollered from down the corridor. Arang turned around and glowered at him while he wore a playful smile. He was standing against the open door with his arms folded against his chest and one leg crossed over in front of the other. "I was just calling to ask if you wanted to eat some japchae and dumplings with me. My treat. You can consider it as your reimbursement."
The piqued expression on her face disappeared and she walked back towards Taehyung. "Why didn't you just say that from the start?" She huffed as she entered the room.
"You didn't give me the chance." He laughed, closing the door. "It was my sister's birthday and we had a lot of leftovers."
The aromatic scent wafted in the room and Arang could feel the saliva accumulating in her mouth. On the floor she spotted a large container stuffed with glass noodles, vegetables and meat, a plate with small fried dumplings and kimchi on the side along with the sweet and tangy dipping sauce. "I'm in heaven." She mused, plopping down onto the floor. "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole cow."
"Why didn't you buy yourself lunch before you came?" Taehyung sat down across from her and ripped apart the disposable chopsticks. He rubbed the wooden sticks together to get rid of any small splinters before handed them over to Arang. She accepted them without hesitance.
"Because I'm going to be a poor college student in a few weeks." She snapped, shoving a dumpling and a piece of kimchi into her mouth. "It was either food or drinks. I couldn't get both."
"Wait... You decided to get drinks for me and the guys instead of feeding yourself?" His heart hitched. It might have been a small gesture but he was still touched.
"Yeah, is there a problem? If I didn't, you would have complained to everyone you saw about how horrible of a girlfriend I am towards you." She deadpanned. "I also received a bunch of gifts from BTS fans at work." Arang opened her shoulder bag and dumped everything out. "I don't know which gifts belong to whom. You guys will have to decide that yourselves."
Instead of rejoicing, Taehyung went into panic mode. "You didn't get hurt, did you? No sasaeng fans attacked you? Why didn't you tell me sooner? I would have gone to help you. What were you thinking? It could have been dangerous. You don't know what people are capable of."
He seemed genuinely concerned for her and Arang's heart unintentionally fluttered without her permission. Maybe she didn't have to deal with this alone. Maybe she could depend on Taehyung. She was scared. Who wouldn't be? Having to constantly look over her shoulder was becoming burdensome. If she told Taehyung what was happening, they could come up with a solution. However, maybes didn't cut it for her, which was why she was able to betray her own thoughts and emotions. "I can handle myself." She proceeded to alter the topic. "I have to tell you something." Arang slurped some noodles and chewed.
"What?" Taehyung asked.
"You know Jung Daehyun from BAP, right?" She began after swallowing.
He sat up straight and plastered on a countenance oozing with admiration. "Of course! A lot people say I look like him. He's awesome! He can sing and dance really well. I'm envious of his high notes. What about him?"
Since Taehyung was a fan, he would probably be happy that she knew Daehyun. Perhaps this wasn't going to be a train wreck after all. "Well, we sort of became friends." Arang announced.
"What?" Taehyung choked on his food and had to pound his chest with a fist. "What do you mean by sort of became friends? How did you even meet him?" He gaped.
"We just ran into each other a few times." She replied truthfully.
"Please tell me you're joking right now, So Arang." Silence. "No, you can't be friends with him." He declared brazenly, slapping his chopsticks down.
Arang's brows knitted together at the center. "And why not? You just said he was awesome."
"Yeah, that was before I found out the two of you actually knew each other! I recant my statement about him!" Taehyung exclaimed. "He's an okay guy with mediocre talent." Sure he was being childish and petty but he was Kim Taehyung. What were you expecting?
"What's the big deal? We're just friends. There's nothing wrong with that. It's not like we're violating some sacred law." She snorted.
"What if a scandal occurs because of this?" He suggested.
"That's all it'll be. A scandal. Give me some credit, would you? I'm not an easy girl. When I'm in a relationship, I'm one hundred and twenty perfect invested in my partner. I don't like playing around." Even though they weren't in an orthodox relationship, Taehyung couldn't help it as his stomach churned in excitement. Did this mean Arang was a 120% invested in him? His cheeks became scalding hot as his palms began to perspire. He could feel his throat becoming dry as he peered up at the girl who was seated across from him.
In order to avoid suspicion, he tried to be normal. "So... who do you think is better looking? Me or him?" He inquired.
"I am not going to answer that." Said Arang as she continued to eat.
"Aw, come on." Taehyung whined, swaying his shoulders side to side.
"No. Not happening. Be quiet. Here, have another dumpling." Without warning, she shoved a fried dumpling into his mouth. The way his cheeks puffed out like a chipmunk's caused her to chuckle. He was more attractive in her opinion, especially at this very moment.
They ate everything. There were no leftovers. That's how much of an appetite they had. Arang thanked Taehyung for the meal and after they cleaned up, she got ready to leave.
"I'll take you home." Taehyung pronounced.
She pursed her lips out at him. "You don't need to. I'll be fine by myself."
He rolled his eyes and grabbed his mask. "I don't know why you bother refusing my offers when you know I always end up doing what I want."
"What about practice?" She shot back.
"The practice room isn't going anywhere." He answered.
She opened her mouth to refute but wasn't able to come up with anything. "Let's just go. I want to take a nap." They left the practice room and mindlessly strolled by a girl who was journeying towards the opposite direction.
"Taehyung!" She crooned brightly, forcing the couple to halt.
Taehyung peered over his shoulder and spun around once he recognized her. Arang mimicked him and was stunned at the sight. The girl's hair was dyed a pastel blue and although the color might have looked strange on other people, it was beautiful on her. A baseball cap sat on her head and a duffle bag hung over her shoulder. She was dressed in sweatpants that cinched around the ankles and a loose white tank top with the word lifeguard printed in bold red letters on the front. "Oh, Inhae. I didn't even see you. Are you going to practice?"
"Yeah, I'm here until midnight." She pouted, decreasing the distance between the three of them.
"Make sure to take a break. You don't want to pass out like last time." He advised. Arang felt irritated and she couldn't understand why. She was perfectly fine a second ago.
Inhae nodded enthusiastically. "I will. Thanks for always worrying about me. Are you heading back to the dorm?"
What the heck was this? Why were they acting like Arang didn't exist? Didn't they know that it was rude to blatantly ignore a person and omit them from a conversation? She was about to leave until she felt warm fingers interlacing with her own. "No, I'm taking my girlfriend home." Taehyung beamed, tugging her forward. "You must have heard about her. Isn't she much prettier in person?"
What was he saying? Arang nibbled on the insides of her cheek as she attempted to gather her thoughts. She was pretty to him?
"Ah, yes she is." Inhae agreed as she gave Arang a small bow. "Hello, I'm Cha Inhae. I'm a trainee under the company. It's an honor to finally meet the girl who was able to tame the almighty Kim Taehyung."
"It's nice to meet you, too. I'm So Arang but I assume you already knew that." Arang introduced, reciprocating Inhae's actions.
"We got accepted into the agency at the same time." Taehyung added in. "Inhae's like the daughter my mom never had."
"What do you mean? She has you, doesn't she?" Arang naturally ridiculed.
The blue haired girl giggled while Taehyung frowned. "You've found yourself a keeper, dude. Don't be so glum. Having a sense of humor as a man is a must. Anyways, I've got to go. See you guys around." It might have been the first time Arang was meeting Inhae, but for some odd reason she felt rather familiar.
She wasn't positive if it was a good thing or a bad thing.
