How To Write About Depression, Anxiety, and Other Touchy Subjects
I can say, without any doubt, that every single person has experienced something they would rather not talk about in public or come out and say to someone. This can be sexual assault, confusion of sexual orientation, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, cancer, self-doubt, slut/body shaming, among various other things
Then there are those of us, such as myself, that want to help raise awareness for these subjects. But the question lies in
How do I write these without offending anyone or hitting an audience they will call me out? The answer to this is easy. DO YOUR RESEARCH! This can mean talking to a relative, friend, or trusted adult that can give you advice and explain more in depth how these things feel, or this can mean researching online. Of course you can add your own experiences into this as well, but be sure you're not allowing yourself to get TOO lost in this book.
I know for some people it may be hard to write these types of books, even if deep in their heart they want people to be more aware of these situations. And I do want to say something here.
As much as I love 13 Reasons Why, I believe they glamorized Hannah's suicide for the first season and beginning of the second. It made it seem as if it was okay for her to kill herself then throw the blame on everyone else and everyone would move on with their lives. They also messed up majorly with Tyler's scene at the end of Season 2. It was unrealistic and much feel like a slap in the face to those who have experienced the true horror.
Make sure that you don't do as they did and delve deep into the topic if you're willing to take it on. For instance, if you are writing a book about a girl who experiences sexual assault, be sure to research stories online (as hard as it may be) it will make your book more authentic and will reach out to other girls that may have experienced the same as you guys have.
Now, if you guys are going through ANY of this, feel free to message me and I'll be there to talk you through it all. Even if you feel it's a stupid little thing or that you'll be annoying me, YOU WON'T! I am here to listen, all yours and will be there for you if you need me. Remember there is always someone out there to talk to-and someone that has gone through what you have and may just be handling it a bit different then you.
You are loved, you are perfect! Never EVER forget that guys.
I hope this chapter helped for those of you that want to help raise awareness as I do! If you have any further questions, feel free to comment below, or, of course, message me personally and I'll get back to you as soon as possible!
