Chapter 1

"Where is it?"
I tried to find my jasper necklace somewhere in my messy room.
It's important to me because I got it from my sister when she was alive. Her name was Sunny and I miss her every day. She gave me the necklace because my name is Jasper, just like the stone. She said that it will protect me and that it will give me strength.
Today is reaping so I will need some protection and strength. This year only family of victors can get picked.
In District 3 there are not much victors but I know them all very well.
There's Abby winner of 130th games, Peter from 113th games, Shawn from 105th games and my father Clad from 126th games.
Abby only has a niece who is 16 years old, rest of Abby's family died in fire. Peter's family got killed by the Capitol for unknown for us reasons and Shawn doesn't have family.
Which means that it's 100% sure that I'll take part in 150th games.
Do I have any chances to win?
Maybe like 40%.
I was getting sick a lot as a child, thanks to my dad's machines I live now. Four years ago I lost my left arm and my dad build me a robotic one.
I don't know what happened to my mum but now I have only my dad.
I'm 17 years old but a 13 year old would be stronger than me.

"Hey, Jasper!" My dad walked into my room.
"You're probably looking for this." He showed me my jasper necklace.
"Thanks, dad." I said and put on the necklace.
My dad is different than he was before he won the games.
He's more paranoid, I guess?
Me and him look exactly the same except that he wears glasses. We both have dark skin and black hair. His hair is always messy, unlike mine.
"Jasper, I know that you will be able to win the games." He said to me.
"How do you know?" I asked.
"You're a smart, the smartest person in this district."
He always says that even though he had no prof that there's no one smarter than me.
"But I have a robotic arm!" I answered.
"So what? It looks pretty cool to me." He said.

I dressed up and went outside. I saw Abby's niece; Melody.
We went to the same school, she was like the queen of the school. Everyone loved her, not only because her aunt won the games but because she was the prettiest girl with the best grades.
Now she looked stressed but I can't blame her for that.
She had long brown hair in a high bun. Her olive skin perfectly matched her green eyes.

I didn't say anything to her but I knew that she knew that we will have to talk soon. We don't talk much to eachother in general even though I know her aunt well.

We arrived at the reaping.
I could see how scared my dad and Abby were. But nothing could compare to my and Melody's fear.
Rome went on the stage after a minute of talking she realized that's it's the time.
I know Rome, my father knows her and every other victor from our District. She was from Capitol but she looked very hurt to pick family of her friends.
"Let's start with women." She said nervously.
Rome slowly took the one slip that was lying in the huge bowl.
"Melody Fierce." Rome said with pain in her voice.
Melody didn't really react, she just walked on the stage in silence.
"Now for the men."
In the bowl with men there was also only one slip.
"Jasper Peterson." She said.
I didn't do much too, I just walked on the stage with no emotion on my face.
"Great, these two will represent District 3 on the 150th Hunger Games and the 6th Quarter Quel." She said as a small tear came out of her eye.

...

I got on the train sitting right beside Melody.
"Hey," I said nervously.
"Hey," she answered.
"Cool arm." She added.
"Thanks." I smiled.
Then Abby, Shawn, Peter and my dad came into the room.
"Hello, kids." Shawn said.
He always was like an uncle to me, he loved joking around with me and giving me candy ever since I was a kid. There was no jokes or candy now.
Shawn was the oldest victor in District 3, he was 60 years old.
"Hi, Shawn." Melody answered. Apparently she knew him too.
"This year won't be like all the other years." My dad started.
"All of these people have family members as their mentors just like you do and all of these mentors will do everything to make their loved ones win the games." He continued.
"And all of them wants to make their parents proud."
"How do we not get killed then?" I asked.
"Simple, wait until they all kill each other." Peter added.
"Avoid close contact with other tributes." Abby said.
Ofcourse they said that, I'm very weak and if I touch water on the arena with my robotic arm I would end up electrocuted.

Next days on the train we spent on talking about survival and how can we use our eletrical skills in the games. Melody said that she can use a spear just like her aunt Abby. Probably the only District 3 person who can use a weapon.
"Dad," I said.
"Yes?"
"What if there's water on the arena and I have my robotic arm on?" I asked.
When I was 14 it happened to me once, I almost died but my dad saved me.
"Take it off, don't let it touch water."  He answered.
"Can't you make me a waterproof one?" I asked.
An awkward silence came.
"Jasper, I tried but it takes a lot of time."
I rolled my eyes as Rome walked in to the room.
"We're almost there! The Capitol is near which means that you'll meet with your stylist!" She said happily but then noticed the tension between us.
"Did I interrupt something?" She asked.
"No, you came just in time." I said coldly and walked out of the room.
