Secret Admirer

"I don't understand what you see in him."

Riley rolled her eyes as her new best friend continued to curl her hair and give her crap for the guy she has a crush on. She couldn't believe her and Maya hit it off so easy when she moved there just a few months ago. Her uncle had introduced the two saying he knew two would instantly become best friends. "We've been through this and I can say the same thing to you about my uncle."

Maya scrunched her face up, stopping what she what doing to get a look at her best friend. "Really?"

"Yeah, really."

"What's there not to see? He is extremely good lookin-"

"So is Lucas-" Riley cut her off.

"If you say so."

"I say so."

"Josh is sweet and funny and nice..." Maya kept going as Riley stopped listening to her because she knew Maya had kind of stump there. While she knew Lucas was a sweetheart on the inside because she had caught him helping one of the elderly teachers Mrs. Hammersmith to her car as he carried her supplies for her, but it was something he rarely let people see. He had to stick to his personality of being the popular jock and that included his obnoxious ways, but even then she still felt herself having a major crush on him.

"Finished."

Riley looked up surprised Maya was finished. Her breath got caught in her throat as she stared at herself in the mirror. She felt like a new person. She didn't feel like the shy new girl anymore. She felt like she was going to stand out and she was ready for it. Her best friend cut her hair to just above her shoulders, styled it, and did her makeup to make her look flawless.

"You like it?" Maya asked, nervously.

Riley nodded. "I love it."

"Wow, Riles, you look great," she heard her uncle say coming in to the room.

She gave them both smiles as she continued to stare at herself in the mirror.

It was time to face what has been building up over the past week.

She remembered waiting for the hallways to be empty and nervously slipping the first note confessing her crush, even if it was secretly. She remembered the bell ringing and him coming out of his class and finding the note in his locker. She watched him read it before looking in both directions of the hallway, trying to find a clue of who put the note in his locker before slipping it into one of his books. Two days later, she remembered the second note being a note that could potential break his heart after she caught her ex-boyfriend Jake coming out of the janitor's closet with his girlfriend Missy. She started to date Jake a week after she started school there, but she quickly realized the two weren't going to work when she discovered what a scumbag he was and ended it right away. She knew she had to tell Lucas about what she saw but was too shy to do it in person, so she wrote another note and put it in his locker. She heard the rumors the next day the two had broken up and Missy's declaration she would destroy the person who told Lucas. She wasn't scared. The final note and the most nerve-wrecking note telling him to come find her at the homecoming dance by the drink table at 8:13 she would be wearing blue if he wanted to know who his secret admirer was. She picked an odd time so he'll know it was her because she knew there was a chance a ton of girls would be wearing a blue dress.

"You ready?" Maya asked, after she put the finishing touches on herself.

"I'm ready," Riley confirmed, knowing she had to look to face her crush. She gave herself one last glance before the three were out the door.

XOXOXOXO

Riley waited for what felt like forever at the drink table. She felt her stomach turn in twists at the thought of him not showing up. He had no reason to. She was just a simple girl with a crush. He could have any girl he wanted and didn't need a secret admirer. She shook off the thought. She wasn't just a simple girl, and she deserved a chance with him. She looked up at the time and her heart skipped a beat.

8:13.

It was time. She felt a chill go down her spine and could feel his eyes on the back of her. He came. She took a deep breath before slowly turning around, and giving Lucas a small smile as he walked closer to her, and he looked happy to see her.

"You wouldn't happen to be the lady in the blue dress I'm looking for?"

"It depends on the next words that come out of your mouth?"

A slight smirk came to Lucas's face, as he took in her beauty. "Would like to dance?" he asked, holding out his hand.

A huge smile came across Riley's face. "Then I am the girl in the blue dress you are looking for," she answered, placing her hand into his before the two walked out to the dance floor. Riley placed her hands on his shoulders as he placed his around her waist. "I'm sorry about Missy."

Lucas shook his head, "I'm not," he said, surprising Riley. "I wouldn't be here dancing with you if you didn't see her cheating on me. This is right where I want to be. Right here. Right now. With my secret admirer."

Riley felt her cheeks blush as her heart melted.

"You look beautiful by the way."

"Thank you," Riley gave him another smile before resting her head on his chest. She was happy she took the risk to be his secret admirer even if she started out a simple shy girl with a crush.
