40. Steps To Hell

"When my wounds caused by your remembrance begin to heal, I find an excuse to think of you once again."

_

You're struck with a heartache. For the first time, you have watched Jungkook walk away from you. Hurts you. Wants to have him back, but matters are yet to be solved.

Matters with Jennie. Some way or the other. If you wouldn't stand up for yourself and your love, who would?

Giving up? Ridiculous. It was not even an option now.

+++

The clock strikes eight and there's a bell on the door. Jennie slapped her mouth in surprise. Her eyes widened and she almost jumped out of the bed.

You sit stern and Jennie gapes, "They're here." You tightly shut your eyes, take a breather and get ready to get into this worsened situation.

Within seconds, your mom appears in your bedroom and takes you out. Jennie wishes you the best and trails behind you for support.

As soon as you make it out, you see everyone standing in the room in awe. The living room of your penthouse bright, with little flowers blooming despite the lights, and lamps lit up, but there's an intense dazzling aura attracting everyone in the room.

The children have stopped in their tracks as their eyes look at the entrance. The adults smile to their ears. As you go further, you see the bane of the light and extreme charm wavering in the room.

There's a guy.

He's suited neatly in a tuxedo with a white shirt unbuttoned by the collar. Little studs on the open collar. Hair pulled back, perfectly. No hair strand hinged. Narrow eyes with an elegant look in them. Face that included softness and warmth. Straight nose and perfectly shaped lips. Charming and sexy at the same time.

"Y/n." Your mom pulls your forearm forward, and you get dragged, "This is Nam Joo Hyuk." She introduces you to him and you see him smiling your way, too. "Remember me?" He asks and you're standing with your jaw ajar.

Oh, Nam Joo Hyuk.

Your childhood best friend?

Lord. This was not gonna be easy.

+++

"You remember him, don't you?" Your mom brings you further to make you meet him. Nam Joo is just standing with his hands respectfully rested together on his abdomen. Looking all modest. He was your neighbour before shifting away to Busan in his teenage years with his family for business purposes.

He was rich and handsome. Someone who would fit perfectly for you; according to your mom, which is. It surprised you how she even remembers him from back then. It was a long back.

Also, the fact he was here knowing it meant for you both to see yourself as a partner sent you shiver. Him and you? No way. Not at all.

Never thought of him that way. He was older than you. Not much, just three years older, just like Jungkook.

But obviously, you didn't see Jungkook like that. He was your lover and Nam Joo was a friendly neighbour. Someone who you used to play with. Who'd seen you in your crazy stance. crying and wailing form. In all kinds of embarrassing situations, you could even recollect.

He was nice. A perfect-looking guy. Too mature. A little funny, but he was too much. Not suited to you. Can't even imagine yourself with him.

"Yeah," you reply to your mom, thinking you don't have to do anything. You could just have a mature conversation with him and this was done. Kinda nice since you already know him. Almost at peace. He'd listen if you'd talk about it.

Nam Joo picks up a packet of shopping bags and hands it to your mom. Says, it's gifts from his parents, they've sent as an apology for not making it there. Your mom shrugs it off, thanks him and strolls towards you, takes you to him and makes you sit right next to him.

And you are screaming.

"Be good." She whispers before settling you down as if you were about to run away. Well, you'd prefer that option based on your mom fixing this date without your conscience, but you didn't want any drama. Wanted to sort this out maturely.

You sigh.

"Hey," Nam Joo whispers, bending forward only for you to hear. You tilt your head towards him, looking around and watching everyone slowly dispersing. You return your eyes to him and ask what's up.

Answers, he wants to go for a walk with you and this closed space with everyone ogling over him makes him a tad bit nervous.

Gets you to laugh. Receives a point for that. You were suffering too. Too much pressure lingering on your head.

So, you are out. Strolling around the backyard of your penthouse as Nam Joo picks out a chewing gum from his pocket asking if you want one. You kindly take one as he takes one for himself, too. Adds he has a pack of them in his pocket. Keeps them to chisel his perfect jaw.

You laugh again, and he grins. He wasn't bad. A funny guy has his charm and a handsome one at that. He had nice cards and could get any girl he could want. Good for him, you think.

Your rejection wouldn't take any toll on him, besides he looked like a nice guy. It will be easy for him to get anyone other than you. So, no regrets.

"So... how many years has it been, huh?" He starts, clasps his hands behind his back and walks side by side with you under the moonlight. The night was chilly. The sound of waves hitting the shore echoing around your house. It was nice.

It made you miss Jungkook. He would've loved the view. Could even snap a few photographs of you with his camera, making you do all sorts of poses. Eventually, to end up with a kiss all over your face.

So much of him to miss, but he's not here. So so bad for your heart. It was Jungkook sick.

"Seven, I suppose." He answers to the question he asked himself. You come out of your trance and pay attention to him. "Right, it's seven." You agree, look at the grass below under your feet brushing against your sandals, "And now you come back with this." You cringe internally. "Would have never imagined this to happen."

"Trust me, me neither." He scoffs, stops in his tracks, and bends down to pick up a fallen flower from the tree in the garden. "It's nice to come back, though." He stands up straight and twirls the flower in his fingers, admiring it.

You nod, "True." Watch him put the flower in his shirt's pocket and tap his pocket before smiling to himself. He catches you looking at his shirt's pocket. You realize he saw you, too.

Stand straight immediately and you slowly smile, "Oh- I just–was wondering what you were doing."

He shrugs, laughs it off and starts to walk again. "Aren't beautiful things hard to let go?" He says and you instantly relate. Catch up to him and nod, "Agreed, which also comes to this point..." You slowly let it out and he turns towards you, curious, "Hm?"

You bite down on your lips and look away, a little hesitant, and Nam Joo raises his brows, again curious. Bends with a smile to your height, taking your focus back to him. "Is there something you wanna talk to me about?"

You twirl your hair strands around your fingers. "Yeah, but I don't know how you'd take it, though."

"You like someone else, don't you?"

That takes you aback. It was the last thing you expected him to guess. You see him with wide round eyes, which seeing he laughs and stands upright. "That's like very cute of you."

You are having your cheeks blushed, "No, how did you..." You whisper, a little embarrassed, as he walks ahead and looks behind his shoulder.

"Your eyes were all over the place as if you were waiting for someone, yearning for someone who wasn't here. Someone, who you must've imagined should have been here with you instead of me? Right?"

You gape, speechless. "Are you some sort of fortune teller or a magician—cause h-how did you get it so right?" You're surprised.

He grins, brushes his hand sideways, laughs softly. "Nah, I didn't do much. It's written all over your face." He quotes his fingers, "Typical lovesick face." He smiles and your face turns red.

Avert your face and palm your cheeks. "That's so embarrassing." You mildly whisper.

"No, but why are you here meeting me instead of being with him?" He comes to you and ask in wonder. "Is it one-sided?"

You sigh, shake your head and look at him. "It's too complicated." Scrunch your face and he hums, goes in long thoughts. "Well, I didn't come expecting anything though, but I'm supposed to stay here for two days."

"Really?" You're taken aback. Didn't know he was staying.

He frowns. "You did not know? Aunt Choi asked for it." At this response, you grunt and roll your eyes. Of course, your mom had to do it.

You already start to walk towards the door. "Well, it's nice to have you. No problem with that, but he'll be here too." You pause and he stops behind you, too. A surprised tone comes out of Nam Joo's lips. "Here? With us? Together?"

"Yeah." You give him a stretched smile. "So complicated, isn't it?"

He breaks into a tiny smile. "I like drama though." You scrunch your nose up and he laughs.

Turning on your back, you continue walking. "Okay, but good to know we're settled. It's nice to see you after so long. How about we go and eat something, then?"

"Were you not treating me to a dinner if I didn't agree with you?"

"Why would you think that?"

"You just said that."

"No. Just come in."

"Okay."

You're sitting on a couch. It's quiet. Everyone has gone to sleep. The time right now reads 2 am. They kept Nam Joo in the guest room. Jennie was sharing a room with you. All the family members slept peacefully in their beds.

Jungkook was late. Not home yet, leaving you uneasy and making you miss him more and more.

The penthouse was big and right now; it felt too lonely. You're having an empty glass of soju in front of you. Filled almost ten times. One bottle is empty and a new one is to go. Open it when the thought of him not returning tonight crosses your mind.

You get up, take the soju bottle and wear your slippers. You're wearing an oversized loose T and pyjamas. Nothing to cover you from the windy breeze and still going out for some air to clear your head.

As you are about to lock the door from outside, you hear a car clicking behind your back. You don't lock the door, retrieve the keys back to yourself and just turn away, realizing Jungkook has come back.

You don't appreciate his presence. Walk past him and head towards the beach whereas Jungkook unzips his jacket and catches sight of you. He watches you walk away with a soju bottle in your hand, following your gaze until you're out of sight.

The weather does a number on you, but you don't stop. Slow down to see whether he is trailing behind you or not, only to find silence at the other end. He didn't come. You hesitantly turn your head behind your shoulders to see him, but you meet with nothing but space.

He got into the house and didn't come to you. Upsets you. Biting your lips, you turn away and dump your head lower before flopping down on the lounger chair placed just before the sea.

Folding your legs up to your chest, you grab the bottle close and wipe the tears with your shirt's long sleeves. Oh, you didn't want to cry, but dear God, it brought so much ache to your fragile heart.

You sniff your nose. I regret not bringing the napkin along.

You groan, tilt your head back to stop your running nose, and sniff it all in until you see Jungkook hovering above your face.

"Hey," he whispers. Glances at the soju bottle wrapped under your arms and holds up a packet to show you, "I brought ice cream." He murmurs and your eyes become glossy and your lips suddenly form into a pout.

Waste no second, get on your feet and throw yourself into Jungkook's arms. Hug him. "I missed you." Nudge your face against his warm chest and cry out as Jungkook is standing with a quick heartbeat. His hands are still further away from touching you.

"What took you so long?" You look up at him with tears glistening on your cheeks and Jungkook has his brows furrowed. Brings his thumb to wipe your wet cheeks. "You missed me this much?" He asks, wrapping your body close to him as you pull your upper lip inside to make a sad face.

He smiles and you nod stiffly.

"Okay..." He puts you down on your feet, but you grasp him, not letting go yet. Jungkook has his eyebrows raised. Seeing you act like this for the first time. "Acting all clingy aren't we?" He comments. Has his eyes squinted and brows still lifted? An amused smirk rested at the end of his lips.

You scoff with a sharp breath. "Yes."

Jungkook tilts his head and lowers his eyes to you. "Just to let you know, we broke up."

He lets out words that make you frown. You let go and Jungkook keeps his hands to himself. The ice cream packet rested quietly on the chair.

His hair flows with the chilly breeze on the beach. His eyes pretty, skin shiny, love lingering in his eyes and his gaze full of adore.

You sigh, the cold fog coming out of your lips. He notices and gets to remove his jacket, but you look away and cross your arms.

He approaches you to help you wear it, but you step back, a little angry. "We broke up, right?"

Jungkook stares at you silently, and you give him a side eye. He is looking at you with an expression of 'You've got to be kidding me.'

You huff upset and look away again but Jungkook just grabs your arm and pulls you to him, but you don't let him.

Drag your feet away, trying to sprint in the opposite direction but, unfortunately, can't. Cannot. He's got a good grip on you.

"YAH! LET ME GO!" You shriek, trying to take your arm back, but he doesn't let go.

"You're drunk." He is calm, and you pierce your gaze at him. "Shut up, you are!"

He sighs and uses a tiny force to pull and you deliberately fall on his chest. He cages you and wraps you close with his jacket. Making you stick to him. Successfully making you pissed in his arms.

"What!" He snaps and tries to keep you quiet. "Stop glaring at me with those eyes." He flickers his knuckles on your forehead as you scream with sharp pain. Shut your eyes tight and grunt, not being able to release your hands, either. He's got them good.

You glare at him more intently. "You're such an ass!" Grit at him with anger. And it genuinely amazes Jungkook to see such a sight of you. He points at himself, brows raised in surprise. "You mean me? Jeon Jungkook?"

You chuckle. "Why? You think there's another one?" You smile, sarcastically. Like, in the way anyone could get pissed easily, but Jungkook doesn't get pissed or irritated by it. He just asks,

"Would you still choose me if there was another one?"

"Can you–stop being a bitch and let me go, huh?" You hiss instead, trying to get off by all means. And it surprised Jungkook a little. You try your best but still aren't getting off. All efforts are going to waste.

Jungkook shakes his head. "You should not get drunk. Spewing all bad words. Tsk." He disappointedly comments, to which you snort flares through your nostrils.

"You freakin' peace of an ass—"

"–From where did you even learn those—"

"$2&$9#\£€9273" You curse all mixed up words that eventually take Jungkook aback. "Wow." He breathes. "I didn't even know some of those." You've got him thinking too much. This was a lot for him to take. So, he just decides to end this fight for once. Didn't know what was coming from the drunken you.

His grasp somewhat eases and you feel your chest expanding for air. "You shi—" Jungkook slaps your mouth shut and you shriek under his palms, helpless. "Mhmmm! Lewtmego!"

"What are you even so angry about?" He leans his forehead against you. "Huh? That we broke off?" He rigidly asks and your mouth shuts just when his palm lowers from your lips.

You pout. "What — what do you mean?" You deny. Deny. Deny. Don't want to push him. Still, deny. "I'm just–angry that you came back so late." You look away. Don't look him in the eye. Can't lie on his face. But again, it was a half-lie, half-truth. And you're drunk. Mad drunk.

"Yeah? Was out with my friend." He answers.

"In Seoul?" You look back at him, and he shrugs, letting go of the grasp. Freeing you. "Of course, why? I can't?"

You stumble back. "Huh? You can? Of course, why would you want—" He cuts you, "Yeah, that friend is a 'she' thought." He states. Don't hesitate to say it aloud. Kinda wants to make you jealous about it. Kinda want to reassure you.

"What?" You lean your face forward. Blink a few times. Stare at him, "Female?" You unbelievably ask. Point your finger around you. Surprised. "You got a female friend here? In Seoul? From where? How? Wait—"

You stare at him. Eyes all wide. Slowly realizing what he's done. "You're saying... since I met a guy, you went to see a girl?" You whisper in disbelief and Jungkook slowly blinks.

The conversation took some unknown route. Wait. From where did this come from?

"What?" He knows he can't take it back. Did not know you'd see it this way. "You know what I mean." Your eyes are teary. Lips pulled out like a baby. Nose turned red.

Jungkook panics. "No—no, no she's just my senior colleague you–" You don't give him time to explain. Get on your knees and sob, palming your face.

"You shitass fa$&7475##*%. How could you do that to me*$&$&^#>." Screams and yells. "I could grill your meat and sell it to those tribal who eat humans!" You're crying too bad.

Jungkook looks devastatingly at you in a state of horror. Shaking his head. Can't believe it's you. "My Y/n would never." Makes space in between you both as you build all anger inside yourself. Wipe your tears and get up to follow him ahead as he is slowly backing away.

He looks genuinely scared now. Hands in front of you to stop you from coming ahead. "You're possessed when you're drunk. That's your drinking habit. You should never drink again," he emphasizes, making sure to say it out loud for you to hear. Deliberately taking simultaneous steps backwards to run from you.

You pick up the ice cream from the seat. Eyes on him. Devil intentions in your mind. Jungkook looks at your demeanour changing. His eyes enlarging as he is still walking backwards.

"You're not." He pulls his finger out to warn you, but you don't listen to him. Increase your pace and he freaks. Turns his back to you and fastens his pace. You follow him. Run as fast as you can.

He doesn't stop. Reaches the door. Immediately get to unlock it, but you reach him before he can. He is hissing, panicking and cursing. The keys aren't working.

You tap his shoulder to call him, and he grunts, giving up. Rests his head on the closed door. Sighs. Eyes tight shut.

"Please Let's not waste the ice cream, Y/n." He whispers and you stay quiet. After he doesn't get a response, he tries to slowly look behind to see you leaning against the door and slowly sliding the ice cream cover open.

"You're not..." Jungkook pleads. "Please."

You slowly nod. Eyes on ice cream. "Don't wanna waste the ice cream on you, either." You still don't look at him. Jungkook relaxes as soon as he hears that. His shoulders loosening up, he had no idea were stiff.

"Yeah?" He asks and you look at him.

Meet him with those half-dazed eyes. Sleepy kind. He realizes the running, and the cursing took a toll on you. Is kind of relief.

But what he had no idea was that the other part of your personality has taken over the previous one. You look away. Eyes furrowed as you dip the attached spoon in the ice cream.

"Well, you went and met that girl. Came back." You nod to yourself, "What you might not know is the guy I met is sleeping in the room next to mine." You drag your feet close to the door and slowly take the keys from him.

Open the door early and get in as Jungkook is standing still and watching you get in. "Good night, Kook." You wave and stumble on your feet to your room without looking back even once as Jungkook loads his brain.

"What?"
