Kitsune

Origins| Commonly referred to in Japanese folklore, a kitsune is a fox spirit. They are able to maintain a physical form for a thousand years. They are well known for their superb illusions and metamorphosis into human forms, among other things. Kitsune are regarded in a plethora of ways, from being simple tricksters to malevolent antagonists, seducers, or seductresses, and even as faithful lovers, wives, and friends. Most benevolent kitsune, if not all, follow Inari, the god of rice, and are its messengers.

Associated Characteristics|
•Every hundred years they gain one tail, and they can receive tails from nine-tailed kitsune. The more tails a kitsune has, the more powerful they are, with nine being the maximum number.
•When a kitsune gains nine tails, their fur turns white or gold.
•All kitsune have true names. These true names are entrusted only to those who have their complete loyalty.
•They also have hoshi no tama, white-gold star balls which contain a part of their essence, usually kept with or near the kitsune.

Fun Facts|
•They are first able to shape-shift into a human form at a hundred years of age. In folklore, it is common for the kitsune to place reeds, a broad leaf, or a skull over its head and complete a ritual in order to metamorphose into a human form for the first time.
•Kitsune associate with thirteen different elements, their specialities varying according to association with these elements.
•They love rice and pulling pranks.
