thirty four

artie rolled into the choir room, absolutely drenched in slushee.

"oh my god, artie." i walked up to him.

"it was awful." artie shivered.

i wiped the extra slush off of his head and shook my hand out.

"that's it. screw rehearsal. this ends here and now." finn and the rest of the football boys began to walk out.

brittany took over for artie so i went and sat down.

before the boys got out the door the football team walked in.

"so this is what the ladies lounge looks like?" karofsky commented.

"ewwwww! what are you doing in here?!" i yelled, completely mortified.

"this is the choir room. now put up your fists because you and i are gonna do some dancing." sam quipped.

"i've got this, sam."

"coach told us to come here. where is she?"

"everyone have a seat." coach beiste demanded.

they sat on the other end of the room, while we all looked completely pissed.

"right. new directions, let's give a warm welcome to the newest members of glee club." mr. schue announced.

"are you kidding?!" i jumped up.

all of us had our debates.

"this is the guy that got kurt transferred." finn protested.

"honestly, i'm not sharing a room with these barely domesticated animals!" i spat.

"i don't disagree with you guys, but i talked with coach beiste and we both agreed that the kind of bullying that david does is born out of ignorance. having him in here, as difficult as it may be for us, is an opportunity to show him and the rest of the guys that being in glee club is kind of cool." mr. schue told us.

"all of you guys are gonna be in glee club for one week, no exceptions." coach informed her team.

"she's bluffing. championship is in a week. without us she has no team."

"with you i have no team! you guys have gotta find a way to come together or we're gonna get our asses kicked from here until tuesday finds a saddlebag full of buckwheat."

"i ain't singing no show tunes. that's the music of my oppressors." azimio grunted.

"do you have any idea what we do here?" finn looked at the guy in disbelief.

"no. none of them do. we have to show them. finn, stevie, why don't you sing your duet from duet week?" mr. schue suggested.

i nodded and stood up.

"no, mr. schue. i'm too pissed to sing." finn said.

i rolled my eyes.

"i'll do it," sam stood. i furrowed my eyebrows,"i have a whole playlist dedicated to songs from smash." he explained.

"oh, sure." i smiled politely and walked to the front of the room with him.

we sang 'when i heard your voice in a dream', much to quinn's dismay.

she looked mad the entire time we were singing, but hey he offered. i would have done it as a solo.

we finished and smiled at each other.

"whoo. that boy in the skirt sang real pretty." azimio clapped slowly for me.

"yeah. really makes me wish we had slushee-d you before all this. we'll have to add you to the list."

"that-that's funny." i said before running to attack him.

sam caught my waist and pulled me back.

meanwhile, mr. schue and coach beiste had to spend the time trying to get everyone else to break up.

"just one punch, come on sam!" i tried to wiggle out of his grip.

"i'm afraid not, princess." he answered.

"princess?" i raised my eyebrows.

"yeah. you always get your way. like a princess." he elaborated.

"fair enough. i do kind of get away with everything, huh?" i said.

"yeah."

"so you should just...let me hit him!" i continued to trash in his grip.

"no!" he gripped me tighter.

i stood at my locker, shoving my history book in there when i heard a light knock on my locker.

i turned to see sam.

"oh, hey sam. what's up?"

"i just wanted to say we did really good in glee yesterday." he smiled.

"oh. yeah, it was fun. it was better than finn who probably would have said something about how i still love him cause i looked at him while i sang. then he would have said something about jesse and i's sex life." i rolled my eyes and shut my locker.

"yeah...why is he so on that? i mean, who asks if your boyfriend is better at sex than them?" sam laughed.

"i don't-i don't know, he's crazy." i shook my head.

"you're telling me," he smiled before continuing,"um, hey do you wanna walk to english together?" he asked.

"yeah, sure." i nodded.

"so how is your boyfriend anyways?"

"um, i don't know. we haven't actually talked in... awhile. i think we're just...drifting. which sucks cause it took so much fighting for the team to accept us together." i frowned.

"it happens. sometimes, you just run out of feelings to give to each other."

i nodded and as soon as i turned i was taken off guard with the icy coldness of a red slushee to the face.

"what the hell?!" i yelled wiping the slushee out of my eyes.

i turned to sam who looked at me with shock.

"i'm wearing a white shirt you asshole!" i called to the player.

i looked down at my now, very transparent, shirt and frowned.

"yeah...you're probably cold too. here." sam took off his letterman and handed it over.

"um, thanks." i muttered and threw my hair into a ponytail.

"you ready to go to english?" he made light of the situation.

i laughed and we began to walk together.

"so this is what a slushee feels like, huh? the cold hard defeat of ice." i said dramatically.

"you've never gotten one of these, i take it?"

"never. i broke my...slushee hymen today." i shook my head and laughed.

"glad i could be there for it."

i walked down the hall with sam to see finn yelling at quinn.

"i never realized you were so freaking weak."

"what'd you say?" sam said from behind them.

i stood there watching this unfold.

they went back and forth about leadership before eventually shoving each other like little boys.

"okay, this was fun. but now it's just stupid." i rolled my eyes.

as the shoving continued mr. schue came and took sam away.

"are you wearing sam's letterman?" finn furrowed his eyebrows.

"oh...yeah but-"

"why are you wearing my boyfriend's jacket? you have your own boyfriend, stevie. there's no need to try and take mine." quinn told me.

"actually, quinn. your boyfriend gave me his jacket because i was slushee-d and my shirt is a sheer white. but no, it's alright." i started to take it off.

"no, it's fine you don't-"

"no, no, no. this is what you want. here." i took it off and handed it to her.

finn's eyes immediately dropped down to my chest, which was now exposed.

i turned and walked into glee.

when i walked in the football boys cheered, while tina covered mike's eyes.

"um, stevie. what happened to my jacket?" sam asked.

"your girlfriend has it." i told him.

finn walked in and tried to hand me his.

"can you please...cover up. some of these guys are prone to...stare." finn said awkwardly.

i rolled my eyes and grabbed the jacket, slipping it on.

it was much bigger and more awkward to wear than sam's.

finn walked into my room unannounced in a panic.

"all the guys that weren't in glee quit the football team."

"what? why?" i sat up.

"cause they got slushee-d one freaking time! and they fell apart like little babies." finn's voice grew with his anger.

"bro, even i got fucking slushee-d today. and it was by one of them! it sucks and it stings, but suck it the fuck up." i rolled my eyes.

"i know. and now we can't even play. and since all the cheerios on our team quit we're not even eligible for regionals. it's all falling apart." finn sighed and sat on my bed.

"i'm sorry. i know they both meant a lot to you."

"they define who i am."

"i'm really sorry."

"i don't want to sound cocky or anything, but you guys better be pulling out all the stops for regionals because the number we just rehearsed is so off the hook, it's dangerous." blaine bragged as him, kurt, rachel, mercedes and i sat at the lima bean.

"seriously. people should wear protective head gear when they're watching it," kurt said then noticed we weren't responding,"guys we're kidding."

"it's not that. it's just, we really thought we were getting somewhere. i thought we were actually making progress on unifying the school." i shrugged.

"yeah, i mean look at us. the stars of two rival show choirs sitting down for coffee and we can't even keep our own football team together." mercedes pointed out.

"why hasn't finn told me about this? i mean, we live together. every night i bring him a glass of warm milk in hopes he'll have a girl chat with me." kurt told us.

blaine and i gave him a weird look.

"warm milk, really?" blaine asked.

"it's delicious."

"finn is too proud to complain. he feels like he has to be strong for everyone but i know it's killing him inside. i hope he realized that, you know, if he and i were together i could make him feel a lot better." rachel said.

"let it go, rachel."

"plus, finn was complaining to me. he came straight over to my house after it happened." i told rachel.

"okay, anyone but his wonder twin he wouldn't tell." rachel rolled her eyes.

"i just wish there was a way we could help. the guys take enough abuse as it is, being in glee. maybe the winning game would ease the tension. just for a little." mercedes frowned.

"so the whole team quit?"

"everyone not in glee." rachel answered.

"you can't play football with five guys. and one of them is in a wheelchair."

"well the good news is, you only need four more guys. high school regulations let you play a few players short if you want. but if they figure out a way to make it work we'll definitely be there." blaine smiled.

"yeah. blaine and i love football. well, blaine loves football. i love scarves."

"you know...finn and i used to play football all the time. and he'd make me watch the game. i know all about it." i smirked, an idea coming along.

"what are you getting at, stevie?" mercedes asked.

"okay here me out...it's not out of the rules to have girls on the team. and you guys don't even need to play if you lie on the ground you'll be perfectly safe." i said.

rachel and mercedes got the same smile i had on my face.

it's on.

"we wanna join the team." rachel, mercedes, and i stood at the front of the room.

"who's we?" finn asked.

"all us glee girls." tina walked up and stood by us.

"stop screwing around."

"it's not cool."

"no, what's not cool is you guys not respecting women to realize we're perfectly capable of playing football." lauren stood by me.

"yeah, plus finn you made me learn all about football. i know the ins and outs. we used to play all the time." i told him.

"yeah, but i wasn't a three hundred pound guy hitting you at full speed." finn told me.

"yeah, have you actually seen a tackle football game? when they hit you...it hurts."

"yeah we thought about that. but the truth is, you don't really need us to play. regulation states you just need nine guys on the field. so when they snap the ball, we're just gonna lie on the ground. we're just gonna lie there." rachel explained.

"yeah....unless i see my in. then it's all game."

"i'm here to bring the pain." lauren concurred.

"i guess, if they stay down it can't hurt."

"what do your parents think of all this?"

"we all have permission slips. they know what this means to us." tina handed them the slips.

"what do you think, coach?" i smiled at her.

"i think...welcome to the football team." she said.

we cheered and the boys came down.

sam hugged me, lifting me up and spinning me.

when he set me down i noticed finn staring daggers at me.

"coach. is this a good time to talk about getting me a letterman?" i turned my attention away from sam.

"we win that game and you can have anything you want." she said.

"yes!" i exclaimed.

the girls and i walked onto the field in our uniforms.

"you know, jesse's in the stands. to support me." i smiled at sam.

"so you guys are doing alright then?"

"i don't know, we'll see after the game. i asked him to come for the halftime show and to watch me. he seemed excited about it so..."

"stop talking and start preparing." puck came up to us.

sam held his hands up in defense and walked away.

"i look super hot, you know." i flipped a braid over my shoulder as puck out on my helmet for me, making sure i was properly strapped in.

"you look butch." puck slapped the top of my helmet.

"so charming. it's amazing how i've kept my pants on around you for the last twelve years we've known each other." i narrowed my eyes at him.

"let's kick some ass!" rachel yelled.

sam grabbed my face mask and pulled it close to his. i had seen the guys do this before.

"you're gonna stay down like you promised us, right?" sam asked me.

"yes ma'am." i nodded, his face still close to mine.

"just had to make sure. you're a loose cannon. wouldn't want my star lineman getting hurt." sam smiled.

i grinned and he let go.

"alright punch and judy on one." finn said.

the boys all put us in our places, having no idea where to go.

as soon as the ball snapped, i dropped as promised and laid there.

it was incredibly boring.

we got in a huddle after being down by a lot.

"how are we doing?" finn asked.

"kill me now." mercedes groaned.

"is anyone else bored of laying? i wanna play." tina said.

"let's not get ahead of ourselves. after stevie's little escapade with the ball i practically had to hold her down." mike looked at me.

"i got you your points, didn't i?"

"yes." puck held his head down.

"exactly. so be grateful. i'm the only one on this team who's scored. coach is gonna get my letterman gold plated." i bragged.

"just...don't get too cocky. ready...break!"

i once again laid on the floor, feeling the need for a nap.

however, it got a lot more interesting when tina got up and ran with the ball.

i jumped up and cheered for tina.

she was eventually tackled and we all ran over.

after a few bleak seconds she pulled out her mouth guard.

"....did we win?" she asked softly.

we all breathed a sigh of relief as mike helped her up.

after the halftime performance, of which quinn santana and brittany quit the cheerios and performed, we stood on the sidelines and cheered for the boys.

they were down by three and there was ten seconds left.

when they started chanting brains, i'll admit on being a little confused but chanted with them along with everyone else.

it was all worth it when the other team's quarterback fumbled the ball and our team ran it over to the end zone.

we had won.

i ran up to coach beiste.

"so, i'm probably a small in letterman's." i smiled.

"what? you didn't even play the second half." she laughed.

"that wasn't the deal. you said if we won. and we did." i pointed out.

after a minute she sighed.

"i'm a woman of my word. we'll get you fitted for one tomorrow." she rolled her eyes.

"yes!" i jumped up.

finally, i catch a break.
