04. Requesting confirmation
MAALOT DEZEEM IS STANDING IN A FIELD ROLLING MARBLES IN HER RIGHT HAND. She studied the trees, the vast space, the energy barrier. She can see the dropships sticking out between the trees, but she doesn't see anyone coming out. She can hear the hovercrafts a few feet behind her with Wakandan armed forces dismounting and joining the formations that are gathering to face the invaders.
After Heimdall and Maalot left the Avengers and their friends behind in the room, Maalot got on her ship and flew out to the field to plan out fighting strategies. She has no doubt that Sybbyl is doing the same from up there. Many strategies came to mind but she won't know which one will work once she sees their opponent. Thanos could've recruited anything or anyone from the depths of space, that's not including the types of weapons he has, or the machinery.
Maalot closed her eyes, took in a deep steady breath and continued to roll the marbles in her hand ignoring the chanting behind her and the sounds of War Machine and Falcon flying over everyone on ground. After a couple of seconds, Maalot turned around and as she walked up to the Avengers, she looked down at the metal wristband around her left wrist and tapped something. The ship's engine turned on, raised in the air and flew back to the palace.
"It's still not late to tell you who created humans" Maalot smiled at the Avengers.
"I'd rather not know" T'Challa kindly told her. She giggled.
"Fine" she rolled the smooth marbles in her hand which helped keep her calm before the impending chaos.
"Thank you for standing with us" Steve told Maalot.
She smiled small. "I'm sorry it's just me. If there were more time I would've come with more soldiers, but I was near your planet so here I am" She stopped rolling the marbles as she looked around trying to locate her friends but only saw the Wakandans and the Avengers. "Where are Sybbyl, Loki and Heimdall?"
"We're on our way" Loki's voice rang through the comms. Just as Loki finished saying that, Heimdall informed them that Cull Obsidian and Proxima Midnight are nearing the tree line.
Maalot stepped back from the group, shoved the marbles in an empty pocket of her pants and then pulled out a blue gem band diadem from another pocket. She placed it on her head, the center of the diadem is resting just above her forehead. The centerpiece is a sky blue stone and it's bigger than the other gems in the diadem. The drops on the sides make it look regal, and the way the light reflects on it- it made the Avengers wonder why Maalot had such a beautiful piece of jewelry stuffed in the pocket of her pants. Made them wonder if she's some type of royalty on her planet. How didn't it get tangled in there?
She looked down at her wristband, tapped it and a hologram appeared over it. She began to tap and turned to her left and walked down the formation as she spoke in her native language.
Sybbyl made her way to the front of the formation of the Wakandan armed forces. Heimdall and Loki are just behind her but Sybbyl has her eyes set on the two distant figures standing behind the energy barrier. Steve, T'Challa and Natasha are already walking back after they've spoken to them.
"PROXIMA MIDNIGHT!" Sybbyl shouted at the top of her lungs when she stood out in the open. With her excellent eyesight, she saw Proxima Midnight tense up. She thought she'd killed Sybbyl back on the Statesman. How is she alive? With the help of magic, she was able to make her voice louder without the need to strain her voice or harm herself trying to shout across the wide field. "Remember when I told you I'd kill you last?... I lied. I'm going to kill you first" she spoke through gritted teeth.
Loki stood next to Sybbyl, much to the shock and disbelief of Cull Obsidian and Proxima Midnight. Heimdall stayed behind near Bucky, both his hands are resting on the hilt of the sword, eyes fixated beyond them.
"Next time you try to kill us make sure there are no tricks involved" Loki smirked.
"You better not play any tricks, Loki" Steve warned as he got closer to the pair.
"I'm offended, Captain. Shocked, appalled, outraged, disgusted that you would think such a thing of me! I would never– spider, where's the hawk? Without him my trickeries won't be the same" Loki told Natasha once he had time to register that Clint isn't around.
"He's not here and he won't be" she informed.
"Oh, well, Sybbie will have to do then" Loki mumbled. Sybbyl rammed her elbow in Loki's stomach, causing him to double over and struggle to regain his breath.
Natasha, T'Challa and Steve passed them, smirking at Loki who's rubbing his stomach and breathing heavy, all the while glaring at Sybbyl who still has her gaze on Proxima Midnight and Cull Obsidian. The trio went back to their place. Loki and Sybbyl stayed put.
"Heimdall, what's in those dropships?" Maalot's soft voice came through the comms.
"Outriders" Heimdall answered. "They have an army of them"
Maalot mumbled something under her breath. In a blink she was standing in front of T'Challa and she spoke to him in a soft and respectful tone. She told him she has a plan, it's one of the plans that came to mind while she was inspecting the area. She didn't give much detail but she did say it'll save lives. "All I ask is that you trust me. I know you don't know me, and you're king here and I'm not even from your planet, but I need you to trust me and let me do this. After that it's all you"
T'Challa stared at her, their eyes locked and she's silently asking him to trust her. It's true, he doesn't know her, and he doesn't know Sybbyl, Loki and Heimdall. In fact Loki is probably the last person they should trust after the attack he lead in New York but he's there now ready to fight, so maybe he has changed. "Very well" he gave a curt nod.
"Thank you" Maalot smiled. She turned around and moved a couple of feet ahead of him.
"You better not die, Sybbyl. I'd hate to give that wife of yours bad news" the corner of Heimdall's mouth curled into a smirk.
Loki gave a light snort of laughter. "Me neither. Sif is scarier than the Hulk when she's mad"
"Lady Sif? But she's so nice!" Bruce gasped. He's in the Hulkbuster standing at the back of the Wakandan armed forces. Heimdall, Sybbyl and Loki chuckled at that.
Proxima Midnight unleashed the outriders. They ran straight at the energy barrier where they smacked their heads against it and were prevented from going through. They growled, scratched at the barrier, tried to open it to some success and wriggled themselves through but died in the process. Their bodies were sliced in half, arms cut off, and those that made it through, some layers of their skin burned off. It didn't bother them.
The outriders that made it through the barrier ran at the awaiting forces. Maalot stood in front of them all, eyes set on the outriders. "Don't shoot" she whispered in the air which was carried behind her and through everyone behind her. Everyone heard her soft voice, even Sam and Rhodey who are flying above everyone.
"Don't shoot" she repeated. The creatures got closer but still Maalot told them not to shoot. If they don't do anything now, how are they going to make it out alive? "Sybbyl...water"
Sybbyl took a couple of steps forward. She took her silver diadem off her head and it transformed into an archery bow. She held it up, fingers of her right hand curled around the string and when she pulled it back and arrow formed. Sybbyl whispered something into the arrow, let go of it and it whizzed through the air until it hit the river. Immediately a surge of water emerged from the river, it moved forward and to the sides at fast speeds splashing violently engulfing outriders in the way. The water swallowed all the outriders inside the barrier, it drowned them. Just as the splashing water was getting closer to the armed forces, it stopped, settled down and just like that it was swallowed by the earth leaving behind the outriders bodies.
"Your arrow is so cool, Sybbyl" Bruce said in admiration.
"So you've said 3 times already" she replied with a smirk.
Outriders kept coming and they began to circle the barrier. "Cap, if these things circle the perimeter and get in behind us, there's nothing between them and Vision" Bruce told Steve.
"Then we better keep them in front of us" Steve answered.
"How do we do that?" Okoye asked T'Challa.
"We open the barrier" he answered. "On my signal, open North-West Section 17" he spoke to Shuri through the comms.
Maalot reached into her pocket and pulled out the marbles she was rolling around in her hand earlier. They're six smooth marbles, each a different color. She put 3 in one hand and 3 in the other.
"Requesting confirmation, My King. You said open the barrier?" Shuri asked for confirmation.
"On my signal" T'Challa confirmed.
"This will be the end of Wakanda" M'Baku whispered in dread.
"Then it will be the noblest ending in history" Okoye said.
Maalot adjusted her stance, dug her feet in the dirt and turned her head from left to right eyeing all the outriders circling the barrier and the ones inside. "Sybbyl, left" Sybbyl turned left and let an arrow fly. It pierced through the barrier, hit an outrider and an explosion killed dozens of the creatures. "Forward" Sybbyl shot an arrow forward and the same thing happened inside the barrier. "Right" she did it again with the same results.
"Open it" Maalot told T'Challa. He gave the signal to his sister and immediately a section of the barrier opened. Outriders ran in, snarling and charging at them. They came at fast by the dozens and yet Maalot told them once again to not shoot.
Suddenly the creatures stopped running and snarling, and instead stopped in their tracts and fell to the ground as they gasped for air but none entered their lungs. They choked, thrashed and cried for the air necessary for life but all too soon they became motionless and died.
"What the hell?" Bucky gasped in horror.
Peace didn't last long, a new wave of outriders came through. Maalot had dropped the marbles on the ground and sliced her right arm through the air. The movement caused air to travel to the outriders and slice through them like a long and extremely sharp sword. Maalot repeated the action with her left arm. When a new wave of outriders came through, Maalot extended her right arm, hand up with her fingers together. A strong gust of air came from her palm which threw the creatures back, and when she flicked her wrist upward, some creatures were picked up by the air and thrown up until they slammed against the barrier.
Beside Maalot, the marbles raised in the air, three on either side of her. They floated above her and dispersed across the field. Outriders quickly began to fall dead. The marbles shot air, like little arrows of air which left little holes in the bodies of its victims. Blood poured from the small holes. The marbles moved across the area and bodies fell but more kept coming.
Suddenly Maalot ran straight at the outriders at an incredible speed. It reminded Steve, Bruce and Natasha of the deceased Pietro Maximoff. He was able to run at an incredible speed and all they could see was a blur of white and blue. When Maalot ran they saw a blur of blue and black. Blue from the headpiece she's wearing, and blue from her clothes, the blur of black is from her long black hair. A thick cloud of dust formed around the outriders, making it extremely difficult for those outside to see what's going on. They can't even tell if they're coming at them or not. So as a precaution, T'Challa ordered the Border Tribe to raise their energy cloaks and the Royal Guards raised their sonic spears.
Cries, snarls, yelps and grunts were the only thing they heard. No creatures jumped out of the cloud of dust, and neither did Maalot. It wasn't until a couple of seconds later that the cloud of dust came down as quickly as it went up, everyone was able to see the result of what happened. Dead outriders, some cut in half others with dozens of small holes. Some are even frozen in ice, some are impaled by the sharp ice. In the middle of all the chaos stands Maalot, the blue headpiece sparkling under the sun. There's blood on her but none of it is hers, there's not even a single scratch on her.
Maalot took in a deep steady breath and stood straight. She saw more outriders running toward her and with a swift movement of her hand, took the air out of their lungs.
"Be careful" she spoke into the comms "the ice is slippery"
Author's note
So the character that I briefly added I decided to take him out because honestly he was just there to look pretty. He wasn't going to contribute to the story so he's gone.
Sybbyl's arrow is like this one.
I don't remember what movie it's from but I remembered the arrow and decided to use it. And the ability to transform I got it from She-Ra when Adora transforms the sword into a shield or bracer.
