5. Crush, Chop and Burn (Part 5 [Final Part])
*Sophia's P.O.V*
It was now the next day and we were all in the kitchen, me and Leo rummaging through the fridge, looking for something to feed Adam, Bree and Chase while they sat at the breakfast bar.
"Okay, eat this quick so we can get outta here." I said as Leo and I carried their food over to them.
"Adam, for breakfast, you get wheat bread and a side of sugar packets." Leo began, dumping Adam's food in front of him.
"My favourite!" Adam cheered.
"Bree, you get two old wings and a drumstick from the Chicken Shack." I said, giving Bree her food. She smiled and tucked in.
"And Chase, you can have the peel of my banana." Leo said, placing a banana peel in front of Chase.
"I am not eating a banana peel." Chase protested.
"You don't eat it. You just chew it 'til all the flavour's gone." Leo explained and I shuddered as Chase shrugged and began picking at it.
"Leo, Sophia, what's going on?" Mom asked, walking into the kitchen. Adam, Bree and Chase froze, acting like robots once again.
"Mom! Look at you! In the kitchen!" Leo laughed nervously.
"We are just having a healthy breakfast." I said, gesturing to the 'robots'.
"Honey, they're robots, they don't eat." Mom said, before opening the fridge. While her back was turned, the three started gnawing on their food but stopped and froze again as soon as she turned back around.
"Anyway," Leo began, "We were thinking today might be a good day to take them to school with us." I nodded in agreement.
"Yes!" Bree squealed, causing us all to give her a "shut up!" look while Mom looked confused, "I mean... Beedy-deep-beedy-deep-deep." She did a robotic wave. Nice save, Bree... Not.
"You two are not taking robots to school. Your teachers all ready think you're both a little weird."
"What makes you say that?" Leo and I said in unison.
"Because on both of your last progress reports, they said 'we think Leo and Sophia are a little weird'." Mom told us and we just looked at each other, "Now, both of you, get to school..." I really didn't want to go to school if Adam, Bree and Chase weren't going to be there...
"Actually, Mom, I don't feel too good." I lied, making my voice sound weak.
"Why, honey? Do you have a fever?" Wow, I really wasn't expecting her to buy that.
"I don't know. I just feel sick, and kinda warm, and a little dizzy..." I pretended to almost collapse and used the breakfast bar to 'support' myself. Mom rushed over and pressed a hand on my forehead.
"You don't feel warm... Let me go get the thermometer." She said before walking out of the room.
"Are you okay?!" Chase asked me as soon as Mom left.
"Yeah, why didn't you tell me you were sick?" Leo asked with a frown.
"Because I'm not." I smirked, earning looks of confusion and curiosity, "Look, I don't wanna go to school if you guys aren't gonna be there."
"What about me? I don't wanna go either." Leo pouted.
"Yeah, but I've already put my plan into action. If you 'conveniently' come over sick as well, Mom will definitely know we're faking." I said. Leo huffed but agreed with my logic.
"Adam, when Mom comes back with the thermometer, I'm gonna need you to warm it up with your heat vision. Not too much, just enough to convince her that I'm not well enough for school." I told the tall bionic.
"Got it." Adam nodded.
"Sophia?" Mom called as she entered the room.
"Okay, wait for my signal." I muttered to Adam as Mom walked over and popped the thermometer in my mouth. Whilst her back was turned, I nodded at Adam and he used his heat vision to heat it up. Surprisingly, he did it just the right amount. Who knew Adam could do as he's told without messing it up? Mom then came back over and took the thermometer from my mouth. When she read it, her face dropped slightly.
"Is it bad?" I croaked.
"Well, it's higher than I expected, but I'm sure it's nothing some of my homemade chicken soup can't fix." She smiled, before turning to Leo, "Leo, you better get to school. You don't want to be late."
Leo nodded, said goodbye to me, Mom and the bionics, which Mom found pretty weird as she thought they were robots, before he left out the front door. I bit my lip as he closed the door behind him. I did feel pretty bad about him having to go to school all by himself.
"Okay, Sophia, you go lie down in your room." Mom told me. I obeyed and began walking to my room, only to be stopped my Chase.
"Do not worry, Miss Sophia, you will feel better soon." He said in his robot voice, coming over to hug me. He may have only been acting to help me get away with being ill, and it was a little awkward due to the fact he was pretending to be a robot, but I enjoyed the hug nonetheless. I felt butterflies in my stomach as I wrapped my arms around his waist.
"Uh, okay, sweetie, off to bed now." Mom said, gently pulling me away from Chase, clearly weirded out by me hugging a 'robot'. I gave Chase a small smile before I headed towards my room, just as Mr Davenport walked into the lounge.
"Donald, you have to get rid of those robots." I froze when I heard Mom say that and turned around. I hid behind the door frame so I could see what was happening in the lounge but no one could see me.
"Leo and Sophia think they're real. They need to be around normal kids." Mom continued.
"Honey, when I was growing up, I never hung out with normal kids." Mr Davenport told her.
"And now your best friend is a computer in the wall." Oh, burn.
"Guess you lost that battle, huh, Tasha?" Eddy butted in. I rolled my eyes.
"Donald, I don't want them around. They're creepy." Mom said.
"Well, what am I supposed to do? Just throw them away?" Mr Davenport asked. I saw Adam, Bree and Chase tense up at the breakfast bar, as did I.
"No, I would never expect you to just throw them away." Mom said reassuringly and we relaxed a bit, "Recycle them." That only made us all tense up again.
"Wait, you want me to take my genius technology and have it crushed, melted down and turned into hubcaps? No way."
"Either they go, or I turn your lab into my walk-in closet." Mom threatened.
"Three crushed robots coming up." He promised. I gasped, putting my hand over my mouth, partly in shock and partly to keep myself quiet.
"Guys, relax, he said he was getting rid of the robots." I heard Adam say before he realised what realised what that meant, "Oh..."
I had to do something. They're my best friends, I couldn't just let them be smashed to smithereens. There was only one thing I could do.
~~~
*Chase's P.O.V*
We all screamed as the recycling truck dumped us in a pit of trash.
"That was awesome!" Adam yelled.
"Yeah, great plan, Adam. 'Oh, let's just hide in the recycling truck and see where we end up'." Bree said, making fun of him.
"Well, who would've guessed that the recycling truck would dump us in the recycling centre?"
"I had my suspicions." I snapped at him sarcastically, "Look, let's just find a way out of this place."
"Yeah, I wanna go home." Adam whined.
"We can't go home. If Davenport sees us, he's just gonna try and send us away again." I said.
"Oh, right... Well, let's just go and find another scientist/father with a high tech basement lab and live there! Y'know? Done and done." I rolled my eyes, resisting the urge to strangle my stupid brother.
"What are we gonna do?" Sophia whined. WAIT, SOPHIA?!
"Sophia?!" We all yelled in unison.
"What are you doing here?!" I panicked.
"I came to save you guys." She replied and I smiled at her.
"Thank you, but you din't have to put yourself in so much danger just to save us." Bree said. Sophia shrugged.
"Yes I did. You guys are my best friends, I'd do anything to avoid losing you, and I know Leo feels the same." She said, before her face lit up, "Oh, hey, look, there's a door right there!" She started walking towards it. As she did so, a huge crusher suddenly came down but Sophia wasn't looking and didn't see it.
"Look out!" I grabbed her arm and yanked her back before she could get crushed. She gasped and I wrapped my arms around her waist to stop her from falling as she stumbled back.
"Are you okay?" I asked, looking her over worriedly.
"I think so, just shocked. Thank you." She said, looking up at me.
"Don't worry about it." I shook my head, letting go of her waist, as much as I didn't want to. Suddenly, two blasts of steam went off and the walls began closing in, pushing us towards the crusher.
"We're so gonna die." Sophia whimpered, clutching onto my arm and staring at the crusher in pure terror, as the rest of us were. I scanned the crusher with my bionics and calculated how much time we had.
"Okay, it takes three seconds to clear the crusher. Adam, if you time it right you can use your super strength to resist the force and we can all slide under." I explained.
"But what if I don't time it right?" He asked nervously.
"Try to time it right." I said, or more like pleaded. Adam nodded and did as I said, luckily timing it right. Thank god.
"Now what?" Adam asked after we all slid under and were met with these two huge walls with deadly, razor-sharp spikes that were smashing together repeatedly.
"Okay, once these jaws close we have exactly 1.7 seconds to get through." I said.
"I got this." Bree said. She grabbed onto each of us and super sped through, only just getting us to the other side before we were impaled by the spikes. The last obstacle was only a little bit of fire, which seemed suspiciously easy.
"Okay, all we need to do is get past this fire and we're home free." Bree stated.
"Oh, it's nothing, it's just a little-" Suddenly, the fire shot up so it was taller than Adam. Sophia squeaked in fear and grabbed onto my arm again, hiding her face in my neck. I blushed furiously, but thanks to the reflection of the fire on my face, no one noticed. I wrapped an arm around Sophia as she trembled. She seemed to be more afraid of the fire than she was of the crusher or the spiked walls... Maybe she has a pyrophobia (fear of fire) or something. Suddenly, my nose started to tickle and I made that really attractive face people make when they're about to sneeze.
"Chase, what's wrong?" Bree asked me.
"All this burning trash is making my super senses-" I sneezed and an excessive amount of snot flew out of my nose, putting the fire out, "-glitch." Thank god I didn't sneeze on Sophia, now that would've been embarrassing.
"Cool! You put it out with your snot canon!" Adam exclaimed. Sophia had looked up at this point but my arm remained around her waist.
"Gross." She giggled and I blushed from embarrassment. We ran for the exit but suddenly we heard a scream and turned around to see Leo had fallen into the pile of trash all the way at the other end.
"Leo?!" Sophia yelled.
"No, it's Oprah. GET ME OUT OF HERE!" He shrieked. Suddenly, the doors opened and Mr Davenport and Tasha walked in.
"Hello. We are robots." Adam said in his robot voice.
"Dude, I think he knows." I snapped.
"Well now he does." He mumbled. The steam went off around Leo and the walls started closing in around him, pushing him towards the crusher just like it did with us.
"Leo!" Sophia screamed, "We need to get him out!"
"I'll get somebody to shut it off." Davenport said, beginning to walk away.
"There isn't enough time!" Bree said.
"Will somebody just do something?!" Sophia screeched, tears in her eyes by this point.
"Sophia, calm down, I have an idea." I said softly.
~~~
We screamed as we got thrown down the garbage shoot once again. Because of her super agility, Sophia landed on her feet but still managed to trip on a trash bag and landed on top of me.
"Sorry." She squeaked, blushing. I chuckled.
"Don't be. I'm glad you fell on me instead of the uncomfortable floor." Really, Chase? That's the line you're going with?! Sophia giggled and got up, helping me up in the process.
"Leo, what are you doing here?" Bree asked.
"I came to save you guys." He replied.
"Well, I beat you to it, so ha!" Sophia shouted like a little kid. I couldn't help but chuckle at her adorable childishness.
"C'mon, let's do this!" Bree exclaimed as we got ready to go through all the obstacles again.
"Okay, Leo, you hold onto Adam, we're gonna surround you and then we'll go through it together, okay?" I instructed, "Three, two-"
"Hey, wait, what's that?" Leo let go of Adam and wondered over to a big, red button on the wall. He hit it and shut everything off.
"That would be the off button..." I said, annoyed that we hadn't noticed it before we almost died.
"Yeah!" Adam yelled and we all looked at him, "Oh, you guys didn't see that?"
~~~
When we got home, Adam, Bree, Sophia and I sat on the couch while Leo stood up and we all waited to be lectured by Mr Davenport.
"I don't know what you kids we thinking pulling a stunt like that." He began, "You could've seriously hurt yourselves."
"Yeah, but you gotta admit, my robot accent was dead on." Adam said in his robot voice.
"Can we please take him back to the recycling centre?" I asked and Sophia giggled from next to me.
"And Leo, Sophia, why didn't you tell us that Adam, Bree and Chase were still here?" Tasha asked.
"Because we were trying to protect our friends." Sophia said, standing up.
"And we're still gonna protect our friends." Leo said, walking up to Mr Davenport and trying to look intimidating, "That's right, if you wanna send them away, you're gonna have to go through me first! It's go time little man! It's not the side of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog and there's a lot of fight in this little doggy! Come on!" Leo started jumping around, his hands in fists. We all tried not to laugh while Mr Davenport just looked at him, unsure of what to do.
"Leo, calm down! They're not going anywhere." He said and we all perked up. He's not sending us away?
"Oh, don't you- Wait, what?" Leo frowned in confusion.
"Watching you guys risk your lives for each other made me realise something... Maybe I've been focusing too much on training the superhuman side of you and forgot all about the human part."
"Aww." Adam smiled, "I don't get it..."
"You're teenagers, and bionic or not, you deserve to experience teenager things like school and classes and cellphones."
Bree gasped and stood up, "Yes! A cellphone! I'm living the dream!" She punched the air in triumph.
"Yeah, you're not getting a cellphone..." Davenport said, making Bree pout and sit back down, "But what I can give you is a second chance. Maybe there's a way you can live here, go to school and go on missions." We all stood up in excitement.
"Are you serious?" I asked.
"So they can stay?" Sophia asked, walking up to Mr Davenport.
"On one condition," He began, putting his hands on Sophia's shoulders and turning her around so she was facing us, "No one can ever find out about your abilities, and you have to control your emotions so you don't glitch."
"Done." I said.
"Okay." Adam said.
"Absolutely." Bree said.
"Okay then, welcome home." Davenport smiled and we all smiled brightly back at him, but then Sophia's face fell serious.
"Um, Mr Davenport, is there any way you could remove my chip?" She asked. We all looked at each other in surprise before looking back at her.
"Why on earth would you want me to do that?" Davenport asked in shock.
"Because I don't want it. Look at all the trouble it's bought me, plus I can't even use it." She mumbled, her eyes downcast.
"What do you mean?" I frowned.
"I came after you guys to save you from the recycling centre, but instead, it was really you guys saving me. You used your bionics to get us out of there while I just stood back and watched. I felt so useless. I probably could've done something with my bionics, but I didn't." She explained, looking down in shame.
"Sophia, that's only because you don't know how to use them correctly. You just need the proper training." Davenport said.
"What are you saying?" She looked up at him.
"How would you like me to train you?" He asked.
"You'd do that?" She asked hopefully.
"Of course I would, you're my stepdaughter." He told her and she smiled.
"Does that mean I'll get to go on missions and fight bad guys and save humanity?" She rambled, getting all excited. It was adorable, really.
"Eventually you will be able to go on missions, but that's what I need to train you for and it won't be overnight. If you want this, you're gonna have to work hard for it. Are you up for that?" He asked her.
"Are you kidding? Yes! Of course I am! Thank you, Mr Davenport!" She squealed, giving him a hug.
"Yeah!" Adam yelled excitedly. He fist pumped, but he was so overwhelmed with excitement, his plasma grenades went off, shooting out of his hands and hitting the ceiling, the chandelier, the glass dining table and a bunch of other stuff while we all jumped to the ground so we didn't get hit as well.
"He has plasma grenades?!" Leo shouted, "My life just got a whole lot better!"
