5 - Count

I woke up early that morning by Ellie, her face was pale and she was rushing around. "Wake up Ty! Come one we have to go!" I bolted up and rubbed my eyes. "What's wrong?" I looked expecting a fire or magic or something, but Ellie just said, "New people. The King is not happy." I frowned and ran down stairs "Why is that such a big deal?". Ellie sighed "We never get new people in the village unless someone gives birth. Travelers never stop by, Merchants are too afraid to bring their carts in the city and if anyone leaves, they don't come back." I didn't get it, but I had to trust Ellie, especially since I couldn't find my mom anywhere. I also didn't bring up the fact that we were rushing out of the house without Mallory and Cheyenne because I thought, 'Hey! They must know how to take care of themselves! This must have happened before or they must know what to do!' I sure wished that I had warned Ellie about her children because when we got back, it was not pretty.

We stopped by the library where the doors were bolted shut, but I guess my mom knew we were coming and had left a way in through a window in the back. Once we got in, I could feel the tension in the room. Somebody knew what was going on and wasn't sharing, I felt like it had a lot to do with the Prophecy. I also felt that this village hasn't experienced anything like this since magic had been banned. Last night, I knew something would happen, I knew my sudden arrival and the magic was no accident. I had to do something, I was the main reason for all this happening. I knew neither my mom or Ellie would let me out though. Somehow I persuaded my mom to let me go into the study by myself and lucky for me there was a window. Before I could do anything, a bell went off. This wasn't like a bell you would hear jingle above the door once you entered a shop, and it wasn't as joyful as wedding bells. It was more like a old bell that had been used for thousands of years, a sound everyone knew, and everyone feared. Right after the bell sounded my mom came rushing in, her mouth was moving but no words were audible. She lead me up a ladder and onto the roof, I blanched looking over the side. We were so high up, but with how panicked my mom was, I couldn't let her know now that I was afraid of heights. It would only stress her more. Laying me down towards the back, she covered me up in straw and stones, only muttering a few words. The most I could make up was, "It's going to be okay, I promise. We'll be okay." But it sounded more like she was reassuring herself more than me.

I must have stayed on the roof for at least an hour before Ellie finally came to get me. She didn't say anything, she didn't explain what had happened and when we entered the library, it was cold and dark. It felt abandoned. I didn't speak but Ellie sat me down on the couch and took a deep breath. "Ty, what happened today hasn't happened in the last forty years. Nobody knew what was going on an everyone went into a panic kind of mode. Some people accused other of sorcery. The bell you heard today," she took a breath because resuming. "It means two different things, hundreds of years ago, when magic was good. It was a joyful noise that meant new people came to the village. We were growing the Sky empire. You see, this village use to be such a beautiful place where sorcerers and humans walked hand in hand and hybrids were the Kings right hand men. But ever since Austin took over and his friend got killed in the war of Athena and Nether, he declared sorcery bad. Referring to all the people who used sorcery for evil things. I was only a child, maybe two or three. Our parents didn't have sorcery so they didn't suspect that two little girls would have magic. But those next ten years were awful. Almost every day, someone would be found for having magic and hung. Today, that is what the bell means, that magic has been found. They called it a crime and sentence you to death, by hanging in front of the village. Today, Ty, new people showed up at the village gate. They walked right past the guards with their swords and bows drawn. A few people died. They demanded to see the King, so he came out. When the bell rung, I rushed out to see a little boy and his mother, being hung together. The little boys father was in the crowd, pleading for their life saying it was all a mistake and that they didn't have magic. The man was speaking the truth, the king false accused the mother and boy of having magic and well, killed them. Nobody knows what happened to the people that demanded to see the King. All we know is that, they tried to kill the King then disappeared, they had magic and they were powerful. The city is on high alert and your mother is meeting with the king to discuss the book of Prophecy, how to protect it and let no one touch it. They want to put guards in the library. but then we would have no place to hide you. So, I'm going to take you home now that the chaos has settled down and we will wait for your mother." Ellie finished.

I was shocked at all the information I had learned. Ellie had just told me the backstory of the village, I was grateful because now I understood everything so much better. Although the walk home was silent, my head was spinning with ideas. It's like my head could never be quiet, it was always going.

When we got home, everything was quiet. I didn't know where Mallory and Cheyenne were and my mom hadn't gotten home yet. Ellie let out a deep sigh and she went into the kitchen and started on dinner, she didn't mention her kids. She almost acted like they didn't even exist. "Ellie, where is Mallory and Cheyenne?" She took a while to respond. "Who are you talking about, Ty?" I blinked in confusion. "Uh, never mind."

I raced upstairs and checked in their rooms. Nothing was in there, like there had never been a Mallory and Cheyenne. I started to question Ellie and everything she had just told me. I also started questioning weather my mom was really meeting with the king or not. Whatever secrets they were hiding from me, I was about to find out.
