Chapter 21: Nothing Going Right

"The most innocent one to you, is the one who will betray you the hardest." The words haunted Glisteen. Who was Hepas talking about? Yilasia? Sabecary? Raya? Glisteen thought about all of the people she held dear, and the more she thought about it, the less likely it seemed that they would betray her.

"Those who are fighting, please head to the arena. Those who aren't fighting, please make your way to the stands." The rickety voice interrupted Glisteen's thoughts.

Glisteen groaned. It was Sabecary's fight, another time where she'd be in her seat, biting her nails in worry.

"You okay, Glisteen?" Raya asked, "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Yeah, why are you so worried? It's just Sabecary's fight." Yilasia tried to comfort, but unknowingly, only added to Glisteen's worry.

"Um, I'm fine." Glisteen replied, trying to sound reassuring.

"If you say so." Raya said, eying her suspiciously.

Glisteen got up from her chair. She had just eaten a pancake and felt like she was going to be seeing it again. They soon were on their way to the arena, the place of nightmares, as Glisteen had come to know it. They arrived shortly. The place of so many unhappy memories and the birthplace of Glisteen's nightmares.

She had been having them recently, all her friends meeting grisly ends, calling out to her, in vain attempts to get help.

Glisteen was knocked from her daze by Yilasia poking her. "It's starting."

Glisteen turned to see Sabecary walking, confidently out onto the arena. Telma was already out with a knife in her hand, ready, deadly. Everything seemed to stop and slow down. Everything was deafeningly silent. The buzzer sounded.

Sabecary leapt forward, icy blasts shooting from his palms. Telma was ready. She deflected all of them with her knife. She lunged forward, aimed to strike Sabecary in the heart. Glisteen stifled a gasp.

Suddenly, an ice hand grabbed Telma, slowly crushing her. Telma struggled and struggled, but to no avail. Her dagger dropped to the ground.

"I-I... surrender." Telma croaked, the air slowly being squeezed out of her.

Sabecary's eyes looked like ice daggers. "Did you give Thigil a chance to surrender?" Telma shook her head. "Then why should I?"

The hand suddenly squeezed tight, and the fight ended with a sickening crack! Telma's limp body hit the floor. Glisteen gagged.

It was intensely silent for a moment. Then Telma rolled over on her side, groaning. Glisteen let out the breath she had been holding. Sabecary was alright, he had fulfilled his promise and he hadn't killed Telma. But Telma hadn't gotten out unscathed. She tried to get up, but her legs didn't move.

"Huh? I-I can't move my legs! Guards! Anybody! Help!" Guards rushed in and carried her off.

Glisteen got up, legs shaky from relief, and exited the arena. She wandered into the training room.

"What to do? It's getting down to it. My fight. What am I going to do?" Glisteen wondered, anxiously.

"What are you doing here?" Glisteen jumped and turned around. It was Sabecary.

"Thinking." Glisteen replied.

Sabecary held her shoulders, "Don't be so worried. I know you'll do the right thing. I know you will."

Glisteen hugged him, glad for the support. She closed her eyes and breathed in his scent. Hot chocolate. She opened her eyes and she saw the last person she wanted to find out about this, right then... or ever.

Yilasia. Glisteen unlocked herself from Sabecary's arms. "Yilasia... it's..." Glisteen trailed off, not knowing what to say.

"It's what, Glisteen? What? Raya warned us about him." Yilasia retorted.

"I know I must be famous for my handsomeness, and all, but since you're Glisteen's sister, I give you my permission to speak my name." Sabecary cut in, with an over dramatic bow.

Yilasia snorted, and stormed out of the room. "Sia..." Glisteen started after her, but stopped, hand poised at shoulder height. She dropped it down to her side. She was on Yilasia's bad side, again.

"Glisteen, she'll be fine. Just give her time." Sabecary said, putting a hand on her shoulder. Glisteen sighed.

"Now she's going to tell Raya." Glisteen muttered, walking away. "I'll be in my room for a while, or forever."

"I'll walk you there." Sabecary replied, slowly following her.

They walked in silence, the outrageously long hallways taking awhile to get down. When they reached Glisteen's room Glisteen paused.

"Thank you, for everything." Glisteen said, looking deep into Sabecary's ice cold eyes.

"Anything for you, G"

Glisteen raised an eyebrow. "G?"

"Your new nickname." Sabecary explained. "Bye."

Glisteen walked into her room, and crashed on the bed. She just wanted to disappear. To never have to worry again, to be with her parents, for everything to be perfect.

But it couldn't be. It just couldn't. She sighed and rolled over. Everything was going wrong. Everyone was dying, or going to die. Glisteen sighed. It was so overwhelming. She didn't know what to do; how was she to keep Yilasia safe? Would her life end, before it began? Glisteen looked up at a knock on her door. She walked over and answered it, standing there, were Yilasia and Raya.

Glisteen glared at Yilasia. How could she? This was something for them to talk about alone. The feeling of betrayal was so large, so powerful. Glisteen almost didn't want to even look at Yilasia.

"We're not talking." Glisteen stated, flatly, and slammed the door on their faces. The knocking continued, Glisteen tried to ignore it, but it was persistent. Didn't they have anything better to do?

"Go away!" Glisteen shouted at the door.

"We need to talk, Glisteen. Don't be mad at Yilasia. Please?" came Raya's muffled voice.

"This is a talk for Yilasia and I. Not for you!" Glisteen shouted back, irritated that Raya was trying to butt her way into Glisteen's life.

Finally, no reply. Glisteen sighed and put her head in the pillow. "Please?" Came Raya's voice. Glisteen groaned. She pulled herself out of bed and, grudgingly, opened the door.

"What?" Glisteen asked, testily.

"Well, um, please, don't be mad at Yilasia. She did the right thing." Glisteen narrowed her eyes. "And, I just wanted to let you know that Yilasia and I don't approve of the relationship."

Glisteen ground her jaw. "I don't need your permission, but thank you for your honesty." With that, Glisteen slammed the door on Raya's face, again.

Glisteen sighed, and went to take a shower. Maybe that would soothe her nerves.

She slipped on pajamas and got into bed, feeling as if she was forgetting something. The instant her eyes closed, they snapped back open again. Of course!

Midnight.
