NINETEEN. best thing that's ever been mine
OLIVIA FELT the bed shift from beside her, Belly waking up and rushing out the door.
Olivia rolled over, rubbing her eyes before grabbing her glasses off of the nightstand.
She sluggishly made her way towards the bathroom, dragging her bag behind her and careful not to wake Conrad.
She took a quick shower, throwing on a random tank top and a pair of shorts that her mother had packed for her. She took the two braids out of her hair and threw on her oversized Cornell hoodie.
As she began to brush her teeth, humming a random song, the bathroom door swung open and on the other side stood Conrad.
Olivia furrowed her brows but decided it was best not to question why he'd opened the door in the first place.
They would all be dropping Belly off first so she'd make it to volleyball camp... at least that what Olivia thought.
Conrad ran his hand through his hair to calm himself down, but absolutely nothing could calm his nerves until Olivia gave him the answer he'd hope to hear.
"I'm sorry." He muttered.
Olivia waved him off, continuing to brush her teeth. She was absolutely sick and tired of hearing him apologize. It was so more than what Jeremiah had ever done and yet, Conrad continued to apologize to her over something he couldn't really control.
"I was telling you something important and you fell asleep and I'll be honest, I don't remember a lot of what I said, but it was something that I need you to hear." He paused, "And whether or not you'll feel the same way... I want you to know that you don't have to say anything."
Olivia furrowed her brows in confusion, spitting toothpaste into the sink, "Go on."
She stuck her toothbrush back into her mouth and Conrad sighed, fiddling with the necklace that laid in his pocket.
"I don't want to hurt you again, Olivia. Especially with all the shit that Jere and I put you through, but all summer, you've been there for me." Conrad paused, looking over at the girl who continued to brush her teeth, almost as if his words were going in one ear and out the other, "And I know you don't remember a lot of the party, but you said that you loved me and I said nothing. I've said nothing and you always said something."
Olivia nodded, continuing to brush her teeth.
"Olivia," he said, his words almost a whisper, "I love you."
She paused for a moment, continuing to brush her teeth as Conrad spoke.
Conrad took a deep breath, his heart racing, "I should have said it a long time ago. I was scared, Liv. Scared of messing things up, scared of losing you. But I can't keep it in any longer. I love you."
Olivia nodded, "Are you finished?"
"Oh." Conrad sighed, "Yeah."
Olivia finally threw her toothbrush back into her backpack and turned off the water.
She looked in the mirror of wipe and foamy toothpaste from around her mouth and turned, seeing Conrad still standing there.
She gave him a soft smile, stepping forward, throwing her around around him, standing on her tiptoes and pressing her lips against his.
Conrad's arms encircled her, pulling her close. He sighed against her lips, a sense of relief washing over him as he kissed the girl.
Their kisses grew more fervent, more passionate. Olivia's fingers tracing the outline of Conrad's jaw, and she could feel the thumping of his heart against her chest.
When they finally broke apart, their breaths coming in ragged gasps, Olivia's forehead rested against Conrad's. Their eyes met, and in that shared gaze.
"Olivia," he said, his voice barely more than a breath against her lips, "I love you. I've loved for a very long time." He whispered.
In that tender moment, with Olivia's hands cupping Conrad's cheeks, she leaned in, their lips meeting in a small, sweet, and delicate kiss.
Conrad pulled back, holding Olivia's wrist as her hands rested against his cheeks.
"I love you too, Connie baby." She smiled.
Conrad smiled, slipping his hands from Olivia's wrist to reach down into his pockets and pulled out the necklace that he'd kept.
"You kept that?" She asked, resting on hand on Conrad's shoulder.
"I was going to throw it away." He smiled, "I paid a lot of money for this."
Olivia laughed, turning around, and holding her hair in her hands as Conrad put the necklace on for her.
After that, he wrapped his arms around her shoulders, resting his cheek against the top of her head. Olivia could only smile, bring her hands up to rest them on Conrad's forearms.
"You haven't asked me, you know."
Conrad shut his eyes for a moment, "I have to ask again?"
"I would love if you did so." She muttered, pressing her back into Conrad's chest.
Conrad held her tightly, a warmth spreading through him at her words. "Olivia," he began, his voice gentle and filled with affection, "Would you officially be my girlfriend?" He whispered the question into her ear, his breath tickling her skin.
Olivia turned in his embrace, her eyes sparkling with happiness as she looked up at him. "Yes, Conrad," she replied, her voice soft and filled with joy, "I would love to be your girlfriend." Their lips met again, sealing their newfound commitment with a sweet, lingering kiss.
Conrad smiled, pressing another kiss onto Olivia's lips. He looked down at her, his smiled never fading, "I think I'm going to head back to Cousins' to help fix up the house. Do you want to come?"
Olivia nodded, her eyes shining with happiness. She leaned in and gave him a quick, tender kiss.
The door of the hotel room opened, Jeremiah and Belly making their way inside. Just in time to see the girl press another kiss onto Conrad's lips.
Olivia turned, a smile on her face as she looked over at the duo.
"Holy shit, breakfast." She smiled, detaching herself from Conrad to take a peak inside the bag that Jeremiah held in his hands.
He looked down at Olivia with a soft smile as she pulled two of the styrofoam boxes out of the bag for her and Conrad.
She was visibly in a better mood and catching her kissing Conrad was something different for Jeremiah.
Was it deserved? Of course.
Did she know that Jeremiah was going to walk through that door? No.
She kissed Conrad because she wanted to. She wanted to be with Conrad because she wanted to. She loved Conrad because she knew that he was the one for her. She didn't have to fight for his attention, she didn't have to throw herself at him, she didn't have to pretend to be someone else to make him feel better.
That's why she was with Conrad.
Why was Jeremiah with Belly? Well...
Regardless, Olivia thanked Jeremiah for getting them all food before turning towards Conrad. He stood there holding both of their bags and smiled towards the others.
"We're, uh, gonna head back to the house." Conrad said, "To make sure everything's back in its place."
"Oh." Belly smiled, "Well, Jere's gonna drop me off at volleyball camp."
Olivia nodded, holding the food to the side to pull the girl into a hug.
The two of them never really got close this summer. The two of them never got at all, but that was never Belly nor Olivia's plan.
Things had taken a dramatic turn last summer and things this summer didn't quite help.
But, they both wanted to change that.
Belly hugged the girl back, "Text me, Belly." Olivia smiled, "We've always spent so much time together and I still don't know you."
Belly chuckled, pulling back from the hug, "Will do."
"So, fourth of July?" Jeremiah questioned.
The trio nodded and with that, Conrad and Olivia were out the door and onto the next bus to Cousins.
Olivia sat down in the seat and Conrad soon joined her side.
She pulled her AirPods out of her pockets and handed one of them over to Conrad.
He placed the AirPod in his ear and watched as Olivia opened Spotify and pressing shuffle on her liked songs.
When I Look At You by Miley Cyrus.
Olivia rested her head against Conrad's shoulders and began to pick apart the pancake that Jeremiah had bought her.
Olivia chuckled, shoving the pancake into her mouth.
"What?" Conrad asked.
"Nothing." She smiled, not looking at him, "I just think this song reminds me of you."
When my world is falling apart, when there's no light to break up the dark. That's when I, I, I look at you.
Conrad softly smiled, looking down at Olivia once more.
For the first time in a long time, he felt really fucking good about life.
OLIVIA AND Conrad eventually made their to the beach house and began to help the movers with whatever they could.
Soon enough, nightfall drew over Cousins and Olivia had fallen asleep on Conrad's bed.
Conrad gently pushed the door open, seeing the girl asleep on the bed before sitting down next to her.
"Wake up."
Olivia fluttered her eyes open, looking over at him, "What the fuck, Conrad?"
"Come with me."
"No."
"Liv... please."
She deeply sighed, rubbing her eyes as she sat up, "Where?"
"Just come on." He laughed, taking her hand and pulling the girl to her feet.
She groaned once more before following behind Conrad, lazily shoving her glasses onto her face.
Conrad led the girl into the backyard, everything the same, nothing touched.
"You woke me up to take me to the fucking backyard?"
Conrad turned, "Can't I do something nice for you?" He asked, "Jesus Christ, Liv."
Conrad let go of the girls hand, taking his phone out of his pocket and pressing shuffle on the playlist he'd made for her.
Mine (Taylor's Version) by Taylor Swift.
Olivia smiled as the song blared through the speakers.
Conrad slipped his phone back into his pocket, and with a charming grin, he extended his hand toward Olivia. "Shall we?" he asked, his eyes locked onto hers.
I was a flight risk, with a fear of fallin'. Wondering why we bother with love, if it never lasts?
Olivia took his hand with a smile and threw her head back in laughter as Conrad's free hand attached itself to her back, dramatically spinning the two of them around.
Do you remember, we were sittin' there by the water? You put your arm around me for the first time.
It was a warm, summers night in Cousins. Conrad Fisher and Olivia Lovell dancing to a song that almost eerily resembles everything they had gone through, but regardless of that, they were both happy and that's what matter.
Just the two of them, slow dancing in the dark.
Kind of.
She is the best thing that's ever been mine.
And forever after that.
