NINE. winner takes it all

IT WAS one of the hottest days of the year and here stood Jeremiah and Olivia, hand in hand as they made their way down to the boardwalk.

This was weeks before Belly and Steven had arrived for the summer, before things changed.

"Oh, come on." Jeremiah smiled, "There's no fucking way you've never been on a rollercoaster."

"Never in my life." She laughed, "I'm, like, too scared to even look at one. I can't imagine getting on one and having a good time."

Jeremiah paused, pulling Olivia close, his hands leaving hers and dropping down to her waist.

"How about this?" He paused, "We play a few games, get some snow cones, and before we leave you pick the scariest ride and we'll ride."

Olivia quipped her lips to the side and looked up at Jeremiah, "What's in it for me?"

"Whatever you want, baby." He muttered, hovering over her lips, "Whatever you want."

Olivia smiled, her lips brushing against his as she did. Whatever she wanted? No problem. Jeremiah would've done anything and everything for Olivia.

"Fine." She smiled, "Snow cones first."

"YOU OKAY?"

Olivia looked up, her spoon from her ice cream hanging from her mouth. She saw Jeremiah looking down at her and she nodded.

The group finally made their way towards the boardwalk and their first stop was to grab ice cream and just walk, getting the feel of the heat.

"Yeah, I'm good." She said, taking the spoon from her mount, "Just thinking is all."

"Care to share?"

She scoffed, almost laughing, "No, but thank you for asking."

"Susannah used to force my mom to come here when they were kids." Skye spoke, "My mom always hated it, but Susannah loved it so much, so—"

"You know what else my mom loved?" Conrad questioned, "The beach house."

"My mom's not evil, Conrad." Skye defended, "And your mom wasn't a saint."

There was a dreading silence that grew between everyone. Whether or not Skye was defending their mom, they did not have to bring up the fact that Susannah wasn't a saint in front of her two grieving kids.

"Skye," Olivia called, "have you ever played Shoot Your Shot?"

"No, and I'm-I'm fine keeping it that way."

"Well," Olivia sighed, "that's fine. You can watch me beat Conrad's ass."

"You could no do that." He said, never looking up at her.

Skye smiled, "I wouldn't hate watching that."

"When the last time I beat you?" Olivia asked, "A year ago?"

"No, shot, Lovell." Conrad scoffed, smiling at her, "Couldn't beat me then, can't be me now."

Olivia smiled, taking her spoon and now, almost soupy ice cream and tucking it between her lips.

She looked down at the ground, tuning at the sounds of the smack down on the boardwalk that the group had shared before she even knew the Conklin's.

"I should actually, um, head out." Skye said.

"No, you should stay." Conrad said, clearing his throat, "It's fun."

"It's too late." Belly smiled, "You're already in my team."

"Fine. You win." Skye said, "But I don't do high fives. I'm not going too like, whoop in the air. I don't trash talk. The corners of my mount might turn just a little bit, but I'm not gonna smile."

"Wait," Melody called, "I'm assuming that Liv is on that team because she's gonna beat Conrad's ass—"

"Excuse me?"

"so that means I'm on the team with bottle blonde and Steven?" Melody asked.

"Sucks to suck." Olivia smiled, turning towards Jeremiah, "What's the prize?"

"Losers have to buy the winners the biggest bag of candy of their choosing."

"Really?" Taylor questioned, "Candy? No, I mean, can't we think of something... sexier?"

"For once and the only time, I'm with clip on bangs." Melody added, "Come on, candy?"

"Candy has always been the prize." Jeremiah said, "It's Belly's choice."

"Belly's choice?" Olivia asked.

Steve cleared his throat, quickly changing the topic, "We'll play the games, but we start at the arcade because it is hot as balls out here. Okay?"

With that, the group made their way towards the arcade and the first game they would play would be laser tag.

They were down to the final round and Conrad's team only needed one more shot to win.

Olivia soon rounded the corner and Conrad stood in front of her. Neither of them moved, they held their guns up and only stared at each other.

"You're not gonna shoot are you, Conrad?" Olivia asked, her voice barely above a whisper, "You wouldn't shoot me."

"But I'm going to." He smiled.

And as Olivia went to pull the trigger, she felt herself being lifted from the ground and her amour beeping.

Conrad had shot her and Jeremiah made that possible.

"Oh, that's so unfair." She pouted as the boys cheered.

"In your face!" Jeremiah cheered.

With that, they moved on to the next game.

Capture the flag.

It was decided that Taylor and Steven would be going head to head in the challenge.

As Steven began climbing, a voice called, telling him to stop.

"No, no, no, you actually can't do that without a harness." Cam Cameron called.

"Wait, are we ok trouble?" Jeremiah asked.

"I mean, officially, there's no horseplay on or around the rock wall, but unofficially, it's the most exciting thing to happen all day." He smiled.

"What are you doing here?" Belly asked, "I thought Nicole said that your were doing some internship on a fancy whaling boat."

"That fell through."

"Awe," Melody frowned, "you we're really excited about that. I'm sorry."

Belly turned, "Skye! I forgot you haven't met Cam yet. Um, Skye, this is Cam Cameron." She introduced, "Cam, this is Skye, Jeremiah and Conrad's cousin."

"Okay, well, great catching up with you, seeing you again—" Steven rushed.

"Yeah, you too."

"Yeah, but we have some unfinished business." He said, pointing towards Taylor, "It's you and me Tay-Tay."

And after they were harnessed up, they started soon after,

And Steven won.

Olivia and her team were now 0-2 and it wasn't looking good for the losers whatsoever.

Taylor groaned, "I was so close, babe."

"It's okay." Belly reassured, "Hey, don't worry about it. I love being the underdog. It fuels me."

"So where to next?" Cam asked.

"It's their call." Olivia pointed.

"Well, I don't know about you, Liv, but I think it might be time for Shoot Your Shot." Conrad smiled.

Olivia returned the smile, stepping forward and looking up at him, "I'm going to kick your ass, Fisher."

Conrad scoffed, pushing his hand against her forehead, pushing her slightly, but she caught his wrist to prevent herself from falling any further back.

The two of them bickered back and forth with each other until they made their way towards the game. The group, now including Cam, stood in front of the Shoot Your Shot game.

"Too bad for you, basketball is about angles." Conrad teased.

Olivia smiled, "I had a great trigonometry tutor... thanks to you."

"Thank you for appreciating me." He smiled.

"Okay," Cam shouted, "five balls each. Most baskets win. On your marks, get set..."

"Come on, Connie!" Jeremiah cheered.

"Come on, Liv!" Belly cheered, "You got this!"

"Shoot!" Cam shouted and the game began.

Conrad threw the ball and made the first shot.

"In your face!" Conrad shouted towards Olivia.

The girl only smiled, bouncing the ball and made it in with ease.

And back and forth the two of them made their baskets until Conrad missed. Olivia had one chance.

Bouncing the ball and looking over at Conrad.

And without looking she made the ball go into the basket.

"Olivia Lovell is the winner!" Cam cheered along with the others.

"In your face, Fisher!" She cheered.

"Guess you can't co-sign her angles." Skye teased, causing the others to turn.

"What happened to "not trash talking" huh?" Melody asked, "Didn't think you had it in you."

"It was kind of fun." They smiled.

"As much as it pains me to say it, it was a good win." Conrad smiled, looking down at the girl.

"I told you I could kick your ass, so..." Olivia smiled.

Conrad glanced back over at the games, "I think you get to pick a prize."

And as Olivia looked over at them, one of them stood out to her. It was a small little beaver that Jeremiah had won for her.

"IN YOUR face, Lovell!" Jeremiah tease.

Olivia scoffed, pushing Jeremiah away from her. She didn't push him to hard or too far, but he laughed at her efforts.

"Whatever, Jere." She smiled, "Please announce to the whole boardwalk that I lost the last game of our night."

"Don't tease me with a good time, baby."

Olivia gagged, "You disgust me. Like, I'm actually sick of you." She smiled.

Jeremiah chuckled, a mischievous glint in his eyes, "Oh, come on, Liv. You love me."

Olivia rolled her eyes playfully, "Yeah, yeah, keep dreaming."

But as Jeremiah stepped closer to her, a warm and familiar feeling washed over Olivia.

Jeremiah grinned, closing the gap between them,"You know you can't resist." He said in a low voice.

Olivia's heart skipped a beat as Jeremiah's lips hovered just inches from hers. She pretended to be indifferent, but no matter what, that (at the time) was her boyfriend and God she really wanted to kiss him.

Before she could respond, Jeremiah closed the gap between them, pressing his lips to hers in a soft, lingering kiss.

For a moment, Olivia allowed herself to get lost in the sweetness of the kiss. Their lips moved in perfect harmony, a dance of familiarity and affection.

But then, with a playful shove, Olivia pulled back, a smirk on her face, "You're still insufferable." She said, though her eyes sparkled with amusement.

Jeremiah grinned, not the least bit discouraged by her teasing. "And you're still irresistible." He replied.

They stood there, locked in a moment of unspoken understanding.

"Come on," He smiled, holding his hand out for her to grab, "you and I... along with..." He paused, holding the prize he'd won her, a stuffed beaver, "Mr... It?"

"Mr. It?" She laughed, "That's the best you've got?"

"Yes." He smiled, "The three of us have a ride to catch."

She smiled only dropped slightly as grabbed Jeremiah's hand and Mr. It. God, she really didn't want to ride that stupid fucking ride.

But she was safe with Jeremiah and she knew that.

"OH, WOW." Conrad softly smiled, dragging Olivia out of her thoughts, "They haven't changed these prizes in years."

"Um," Olivia softly smiled, "why don't you pick my prize."

Conrad looked around all the prizes before point towards the stuffed bear with the red nose and matching bow tie.

"Thank you." Conrad muttered towards the attendant and handed it off to Olivia, "For you, m'lady."

Olivia chuckled, "Thank you, good sir, but that doesn't mean your ass is off scot free." She smiled, turning towards the others, "We have one more game and I get to pick and I choose dancing."

The others cheered and made their way back inside the arcade.

Melody and Olivia walked slowly side by side as Olivia held the bear in her hands.

"Look, Liv, you know I love you lots, but the way you two were looking at each other."

Olivia scoffed, "Conrad and I are good. It was fun. Don't make it something it's not."

Melody held her hands up in defense, "I'm not. I'm just saying, I don't think two friends look at each other that way."

"Whatever." Olivia sighed, "You just don't like Conrad."

"I don't." Melody assured, "I don't like him for the time being. I just don't want you to get hurt again, Livs. Those Fisher boys put you through the ringer."

Olivia nodded, "I know. Trust me, I know, but I think I can handle it."

"Hey, Liv."

The duo turned, seeing Conrad step forward. Melody gave Olivia a soft smile before stepping away and making conversation with Cam.

"You need to name the thing."

"Thing?" Olivia questioned, laughing at his tone, "He has a name."

"Oh, yeah?" Conrad asked, crossing his arms, "What is it?"

Olivia sighed with content, turning around so her back was facing Conrad's, almost pressing against his chest as she held the bear in the air almost like a baby.

She tilted her head to the side, quipping her lip to the other as she looked up.

She smiled brightly as she turned around to face Conrad, his face now flushed.

"Bingo."

"Bingo?" He questioned.

"Yeah," She smiled. The two of them began walking side by side as they made their way towards the dancing game, "I like the name. You picked the prize and I picked the name. I think it's fair."

"Okay, all right." He smiled, "You're right. Bingo is the perfect name." Conrad said sarcastically.

"Don't get sarcastic with me, Fisher." Olivia smiled, gently pushing him away. She looked around, suddenly pressing her hand over her nose, "Do you smell that?" She asked.

"What?"

"I think I smell... a comeback." She joked, "Don't you smell it, Bingo?"

Conrad chuckled, taking the beat from her hands, "Do you smell it, Bingo?" He asked, holding the bear close to his ear, "You sure about that, Bingo?" He held the bear in his arms as he looked over at Olivia, "Well, Bingo is Team Conrad and if you think you smell a comeback I'd be willing to make a little side bet.

Olivia nodded, "I'm listening."

"I was just thinking, if you wanted, um, maybe whichever one of us loses has to ride the Tower of Terror."

"Oh, you're sick." Olivia laughed, "Jeremiah told me you used to cry every time you looked at the Tower of Terror."

"Says you!" He smiled, "Jeremiah told me you cried after riding it... twice!"

"Fine, fine, best man wins." She smiled, stepping in front of him, "And it will be me, lover boy." She teased.

"You're on, princess."

With that, he brushed right past her, leaving her and Bingo alone for a moment, but never a moment too long as Jeremiah made his way towards her.

"Did I hear you talking about the Tower of Terror?" He asked, "Because I'm pretty sure that's only gonna end with one of you in tears."

"Better him than me, right?" She rebutted.

Jeremiah smiled, "Agreed."

"And, hey, he's in a good mood." Olivia pointed, "That's the plan, right? Keep the Fisher boys smiling. At least one of you, until he's crying his eyes out on the ride. I think the key of keeping Conrad happy is competition. I mean, I know you both very well to know that."

"Oh, yeah?" Jeremiah questioned, "Well, what's the key to making me happy, Liv?"

Olivia chuckled, "Cheeseburgers, Ariana Grande... and correcting me when I say "bru-shetta"."

"Because it's "bru-sketta". He chuckled.

"Whatever. It's like tomato tomato. You always know what I'm talking about."

Jeremiah smiled, "Damn, you're good, Liv.

"What can I say? I aim to please, you know that." She smiled.

The two of them stood by the dance machine and it was Skye versus Jeremiah.

And Skye won with ease, but they decided to do one last thing to determine the true winner and who would be getting on the Tower of Terror. As a group, they decided to do go-kart racing and whoever had all their cars across the line would win and that just so happened to be Conrad's team.

Meaning that Olivia would have to ride the Tower of Terror.

"It's time." Conrad smiled, "The Tower of Terror awaits"

Steven smiled, "I'll get you a barf bag."

Olivia only nodded with a heavy sigh. The last thing she wanted was to get on that stupid fucking ride.

She had been on the ride twice with Jeremiah and cried each fucking time. At this point, she would rather shit her pants than to get on that ride again.

Jeremiah approached the girl as the others grabbed their candy bags and left to see the ride for themselves.

"Hey, no one said you had to do this alone." He smiled, "I can keep you company if you want me to. The key is just to not think about it."

"What if I start crying like a baby, huh?" She asked, "What happens then?"

"I'll be right there." He reassured, "A shoulder to cry on."

Olivia nodded, "Okay, let's go."

"Come on. You got this. We've done this before."

"I know. You'd think I be less scared."

But she wasn't. And her fear didn't lighten up once she saw the ride up close and personal.

Olivia sighed deeply as she and Jeremiah slowly stepped onto the ride.

They sat down in their seats as the others cheered and the man buckled them down.

The ride slowly let up and Olivia could only look forward. Jeremiah turned his head, looking over at her.

"It's okay to be scared." He reassured.

"I know." She muttered, her voice barely above a whisper, "I feel like I'm about to shit myself."

"Hey, don't worry. I'm right here with you, okay?"

Olivia nodded and quickly grabbed ahold of Jeremiah's hand, lacing their fingers together. And before she knew it, they were at the top and flying straight down.

And like that, it was all over.

Nightfall coming over Cousins and Belly asking if Cam wanted to join them for the rest of the night.

Conrad, once again, beat Melody to the passengers seat. Olivia only laughed as she began the drive back to the Fisher's summer house.

"You know," Melody smiled from the back, "I don't think I've seen you smile so much, Conrad."

"I had to good time, Melody. Is that hard to believe?" He asked.

"Yeah, but I think I know why you had a good time. Why you smiled from ear to ear."

"Melody." Olivia called.

"I'm just saying. I know you and Liv had some... whatever, but you two were friends first and the way you smiled... it almost made me like you."

"Almost?" Conrad chuckled, "What have I done—"

"Don't finish that fucking sentence." Melody cut off, "We'd be here all day if I said what I didn't like about you." Melody sighed, rolling her eyes, "But what I can say, is that Olivia does an amazing job at making you seem... like you."

Olivia only nodded, her hands gripping the stirring wheel as she waited for Conrad's response to Melody's comment.

"Yeah." He softly smiled, "I heard she aims to please."

Olivia nodded, "I try."

"Aims to please, huh?" Melody questioned, leaning forward so she was in the front with the others, "Care to explain?"

"Care to explain why you're in the front?" Olivia asked, almost elbowing the girl, "It's called the backseat for a reason."

Melody scoffed and soon enough the group made their way back to the house.

Olivia parked behind Jeremiah and exited her car. She hadn't realize, but she had dropped Bingo on the ground.

"Liv." Conrad called.

She turned, looking over as she continued to walk. Conrad smiled, throwing Bingo towards her and she caught him with ease.

"Thank you for today." He continued, "I had a good time."

"I'm glad you did." She smiled, "I like to see you smile."

Conrad stopped as Olivia did, the two of them standing on the porch, "You've always had the prettiest smile." She complimented.

"What the fuck?" Jeremiah shouted from inside.

The two of them walked in and everything inside that house was gone.

Everything was gone.

The paintings, the memories of Susannah, it all disappeared before their eyes.

Just like that... everything had shifted.
