EIGHT. i h8 that i still feel bad for u
THOUGH THE sun shined that day, everyone felt down. Rather so, it would've been better if it rained to match the dreary mood.
Olivia wore contacts that day. She remembered saying the night before that her glasses and her crying never mixed and she would rather cry without the loss of her sight.
Olivia hadn't been to a funeral until she sat at Susannah's.
Everyone wore black and suits.
People cried over one person and the memories that they shared.
This day was about Susannah.
It shocked many, mainly Steven, Belly, and Olivia as they watch Conrad make his way towards the front of the church with guitar in his hands.
"This was the song that she always asked me to play for her."
He spoke softly, his voice never wavering until he began to play and hit a note incorrectly.
The song was Last Kiss by Pearl Jam.
He soon finished singing and all you could hear were sobs from the crowd.
The service at the church soon ended and moved to a house that Olivia wasn't heavily familiar with.
But Olivia found herself in the kitchen piling different food on plates to bring to Jeremiah and Conrad.
She soon caught sight of Steven and called out for him.
"Can you do me a favor?" She asked, "Can you take this upstairs to Jere for me?"
"Yeah, sure."
"Thank you." She said, handing it off, "Can you tell him I'll be there soon?"
Steven nodded, taking the plate and leaving the girl alone as she held Conrad's plate in her hands and headed upstairs.
She peaked into different rooms and finally found him in the rec room. His head laying in a girls lap that Olivia hadn't recognized.
But her name was Aubrey. Olivia didn't take account for her name in the moment, but nonetheless, her name was Aubrey.
"Oh, hey." She softly smiled, "That for us?"
Olivia stepped forward as Conrad sat upright. She sat the plate down on the nearby table, returning the small smile.
"Thanks." Aubrey smiled.
"No problem." She muttered.
Olivia stepped out the room, never stopping as she heard footsteps behind her and Conrad calling her name.
She made her way downstairs, Conrad following close behind and he finally grabbed her arm.
"Liv, wait."
She jerked her hand away and turned. She didn't want to cause a scene, not here. Whatever she felt or whatever Conrad felt wasn't important. This whole thing, the entire day was about and for Susannah.
"What do you want?" She muttered, stepping close so he could hear her.
"Liv, that was just Aubrey."
"I don't care who she is, Conrad." Olivia sighed, "I really don't."
"She was helping me." He whispered.
"What's so different about her help compared to mine?" She asked, "I'm glad to know where I am with you."
It was selfish question and she knew that. But at this point, Conrad and Olivia had broken up not long ago and he kept pushing the girl away whenever she wanted to help him.
"Grow up."
"Fuck you." She spat.
"I should have known you'd be like this."
"Like what?" She asked, "Childish?"
"I should've known it'd be a bad idea to start something with you."
She chuckled, almost scoffing at his words, "I'm suppose to believe that?"
"It was a huge mistake."
Olivia stepped forward, looking up at him, "I hate you. And I want you to know that. You can't keep fucking with me like this. I hate you."
He looked down, his look cold, "Good."
Olivia only nodded and left the house.
She wasn't going to keep crying over Conrad. She couldn't and wouldn't do that to herself.
She couldn't keep trying to reach out to him.
She couldn't do that to herself.
OLIVIA FURROWED her brows. Conrad was gonna a little too long and Steven seemed to take notice of his longing absent as well.
Olivia stood to her feet and stepped outside and he wasn't anywhere near.
She made her way towards the beach and saw Conrad bent over.
"Conrad?" She called, but he didn't respond.
She could hear subtle footsteps behind her and turned, seeing Steven close by, but carefully making his way towards her.
Conrad finally turned, seeing the two of them and quickly waved them off, "Panic attack. I'm fine. I'll be fine."
Conrad turned, hoping they'd leave as he stepped further and further into the ocean.
"I'm going to go get Jere." Steven muttered to Olivia.
"Don't do that." She muttered back.
Olivia stepped forward, Steven kept his distance but was still close enough to hear what both she and Conrad were saying.
"It's... I just need a second." Conrad reassured through his struggles breath.
"Do you remember last year when I got caught under that small wave?" She called, not waiting for a response, "Steven didn't want me to look bad so he fell under to and all you and Jeremiah did was laugh and Belly watched from the shore." She smiled, "It was the hardest I've seen you laugh in a long time. I really missed that. We all do."
"Yeah." Steven added, "You're one of the coolest people that I know."
"I guess you are wrong about that one." Conrad breathed.
"No." Steven reassured, "You're still the coolest."
"Do you have these often?" Olivia asked.
Conrad only nodded his head, turning to face them as he held his eyes tightly shut.
"More since my mom died."
He rested his hand against his chest as he approached them slowly. He didn't look at them, more so into the distance, but he had acknowledged their presence, it was enough.
"I'm glad you're here." Conrad spoke softly, "The both of you."
Steven paused, looking down at Olivia before looking back over at Conrad, "So, you wan to tell us what got you all worked up? Or just be bros and pretend this never happened?"
"Found out I got into Stanford."
"What?" Steven questioned, "Are you serious?"
Olivia softly smiled, "That's great, Conrad."
"My mom had this fantasy about me finding myself on the West Coast."
"Wait, wait, wait, Connie," Steven called, "this is a good thing, man."
"You've been dreaming about Stanford forever. Why are you freaking out?" Olivia asked.
"Things are just starting to get better with Jere, and he's going to Finch in the fall, which is close to Brown, so it just doesn't make sense to transfer anymore..."
"You don't have to decided your entire life right now, Conrad." Olivia reassured, "Talk to Jere."
"He doesn't even know I applied, Olivia." He paused, "So... Please don't tell him."
There was a pause between them all, the sounds of the ocean hitting the shore being only loud for Steven and Olivia.
"I mean, Stanford's not even an Ivy." Steven said, "So fuck 'em, right?"
"Let's go."
OLIVIA WOKE up that morning to the smell of what smelt like baked bread.
She stepped out of her shared room with Melody and was met with Belly who was stretching in the middle of the hallway.
Belly and Olivia made their way downstairs to see Julia standing by the sink, water over flowing in her vase as Skye took a step forward to stop her.
Belt turned, grabbing Olivia's wrist to leave, but they were caught by Sky who smiled towards them.
"Oh. Hey, Olivia." They smiled, "You must be Belly."
"Hey." Olivia said, "We just smelled the muffins."
"You want one?" Skye asked.
Belly softly smiled, "Yeah, sure."
"Uh, those are for the open house." Julia said, "Morning."
The front door soon opened and Conrad and Jeremiah made their way inside.
"Mmm, did somebody get muff..." Jeremiah cut his sentence short once he saw Julia and Skye in the kitchen.
"Hey, Jeremiah." Skye smiled, "Conrad."
"Skye." Conrad paused, "You didn't tell me she was here, too."
"It's they. Not she." Skye corrected, "God, I guess it's been like a decade since I saw you guys. Um, how are you doing since your mom?"
"It's been rough." Jeremiah answered.
"Rougher now that our aunt's stealing our house." Conrad added.
"I'm not stealing anything, Conrad." Julia defended, "Like it or both, I get to choose what happens to this house and I choose to put it on the market." She paused, "You boys should get on the road. Beat the traffic back to Boston."
"There's no chance. We're staying for the open house." Conrad said.
"Uh, no, no, no. I can't have a bunch of teenagers chasing everybody away." Julia said, "Call your father because this isn't an Aunt Julia problem."
"Except it is. Because you are the problem." He seethed.
"I don't have time for this." Julie sighed, leaving the room.
"Conrad, she's still your family." Belly said.
"Then why is she doing this to us?" He asked.
"This is hard for her, too." Skye muttered.
"Really?" Conrad asked, "Seems like she's doing this all pretty fucking easily."
With that Conrad left, leaving the four others in the kitchen.
Skye sighed, "He's grown into quite the asshole."
"You have no idea." Jeremiah said.
And one by one each other them left the kitchen and Olivia was able to grab two muffins and make her way upstairs.
She softly knocked on the bedroom door and heard a soft "come in". Olivia opened the door and Belly sat on the bed, holding Junior Mint in her lap.
"I brought you a muffin." Olivia smiled.
Belly looked up, seeing the girl and smiled, "Thank you."
Olivia stepped more into the room and handed Belly the muffin. She slowly picked at it and Olivia paused, looking at the girl.
"Everything okay?" Olivia asked.
Belly nodded, "Yeah, I'm good. There's just a lot going on, you know?"
"I get it." Olivia muttered, "Personal stuff, all of this... It's a lot."
Suddenly, the door that Olivia had been leaning on was being pushed opened by Taylor.
"Oh, my bad." Taylor spoke.
Olivia only nodded and left the two of them alone.
She made her way back towards her assigned room and sighed, shutting the door behind her as she ate piece of her muffin.
"I ran into Taylor while getting ready and it suddenly hit me that I'm in the presence of an actually snakey bitch." Melody sighed, turning to look at Olivia, "Um, hello? Why aren't you dressed yet?"
"I woke up not the long ago." She answered, "You were passed out not even ten minutes ago."
"Duality of women as they say."
"Who said that?"
"Probably Shakespeare or some shit." She approached, "Anyway, for the first time in forever, we are alone. Tell me everything."
"Like what?" Olivia asked, sitting down on the bed.
"You know what I'm talking about, Liv. Why did you come to Cosuins? You told me you had summer plans with Violet or whoever."
"I did... I just don't have those plans anymore."
Melody sighed, rolling her eyes, "I love you, Liv, I really do, but do you really think that it's normal for Conrad to reach out to you and only you during a time like this?"
"Yes."
"Post breakup?" Melody asked, "Post break up and the last thing you said to him was that you hate him and he said that dating you was a bad—"
"I get it." Olivia muttered, sitting down in her bed as she continued to pick at her muffin.
Melody sighed, sitting down next to the girl, "I just don't want you to make this a Olivia-Conrad-Jeremiah problem especially after what they both put you through."
Olivia knew that Melody's words were true. No matter how kindhearted Olivia had been towards Conrad and Jeremiah, they had put her through a lot, but she was only here to help.
But maybe this time she couldn't.
Maybe this time, a task like this was too big.
"But I know you, Liv." Melody continued, "Just don't stress yourself out about this. Especially when it's not about you."
Olivia only nodded and handed Melody the rest of her muffin as she went to get showered and dressed for today.
Once she was done, she and Melody made their way downstairs.
Olivia threw her hair into a ponytail and heard a soft knock on the front door and opened it with furrowed brows.
"Hi." She smiled, "Can I help you?" She asked.
"Sandy Denati." She introduced, "I'm looking for Julia."
"Oh, for the open house." Olivia muttered, "That's... that's been canceled, unfortunately. I'm so sorry that it's last minute, but I believe she's having some second thoughts."
"Sorry, who are you?"
"She's my girlfriend," Conrad spoke, standing behind Olivia, "and she's, um, and she's right. The house is not for sale."
"Conrad Fisher, right?" Sandy asked, "It's nice to see you. I am sorry about your mom."
"Well, clearly not sorry enough to pass up the opportunity to sell her house."
"I'm just doing my job."
"Well, consider this an unexpected day off."
"Ignore them!" Julia called from behind, "Ignore them. There will be an open house today. But there does seem to be a minor problem with the AC. It does."
"That is not a minor problem, Julia. It's supposed to hit 95 today."
"Yeah. Okay, um, let's chat outside for a minute."
As the two of them stepped out, Conrad began to fling the door close as hard as possible, but Olivia had caught it just in time to gently shut it.
She rested her hands against the door for a moment before turning around to face Conrad.
"I'm sorry." He apologized, "I didn't mean to call you my girlfriend."
Olivia nodded, "It was a quick plan. Don't worry about it." She reassured.
"Hey," Jeremiah said, entering the room, "is everything okay?"
"No, the realtor just got here." Conrad answered.
"Shit. Well, what are we gonna do?" He asked.
"I don't think there's anything we can do right now." Olivia answered, "The only thing I can think asking Skye if they know anything. We just need a moment alone with them."
"Well, good luck because those two are inseparable." Jeremiah said.
Conrad sighed, "I don't fucking know."
The three of them left the corridor and into the kitchen were everyone sat.
Melody turned, her blond hair almost whipping Steven in the face.
"God, you're here." She smiled, "If I had to hear one more person complain about the heat I was going to literally kill them."
Julia soon entered the kitchen, "Today's open house has been canceled. So I need you all out of the house while I get the AC guy here to do some work. Also, uh, who is the AC guy?"
"Uh, do you want me to look one up for you?" Skye asked.
"Uh, no, no, that's okay." Julia reassured, "I'm certain Susannah has her preferred technician and four approved backup right here." She smiled, holding a book in her hands.
"Great. Now we don't have to lie about the black mold to the buyers." Jeremiah said, "Let's go to the beach."
"I'm not leaving." Conrad muttered.
"Come on, Conrad." Jeremiah called, "We've won this round. Let's just get out of here."
"The mall has good AC." Taylor spoke.
"No one wants to hear what you want to do, boxed blonde." Melody scoffed, pressing her hands against the counter.
"Cool. Have fun." Conrad said, "I didn't ditch finals just to leave this house for the taking by—"
"Conrad," Julia called, "I'm trying... straining to keep my shit together. You've already ruined my day. The least you can do is get out my hair for a few hours."
"You think you're the only one—"
Olivia smiled, placing her hand on Conrad's shoulder, "Why don't we head to the boardwalk?"
Everyone seemed to come to an agreement and began standing from their spots.
"Hey, you should come with us, Skye." Belly suggested.
"Oh, um, sounds very state fair." They said, "I think I should just stay with you, right?" They said, turning towards Julia.
"No. Wasn't my favorite, but you might like it."
"I shouldn't just stay with you?"
"No, I'll be fine. After this... I'm going to go back to the hotel for a nap and a NAN fan."
Skye turned, "Guess I'm coming with you guys."
Olivia grabbed her keys from the table and hopping into her car.
She didn't pick who would ride with her, but Conrad and Melody made their way towards her car and Conrad hopped into the passengers seat.
Melody grabbed the handle, but it didn't budge.
"Get out the front."
"No."
Melody furrowed her brows, "No? No! You've been with Olivia for four fucking days! Sit in the back!"
"No."
Melody scoffed looking over at Olivia who only shrugged her shoulders and gesturing towards the back seat.
Melody held her mouth agape and flipped off the duo and sat in the back seat.
Olivia only hopped the moods would be lifted and everything would be okay.
Because she knew that everything was going to be okay.
They had to be.
