21 | it takes two to make a thing go right

Regulus made his way to the infirmary as quickly as he could. He knew that James would be upset with him for sending him away and having a contingency plan but he could deal with that. It was everything else that followed that he was uncertain of.

He was turning towards the door when he noticed an older couple standing outside of it. He was about to ask them to move when Pomfrey emerged with a smile. "Mr and Mrs Potter," she said and his eyes widened. He hadn't even realized they were here. But of course they were, it was the championship game. "He's right inside." Her gaze flickered over to him before he could turn and run. "Regulus," she greeted, "He's been waiting for you."

"Right," he nodded, following the couple inside, "Thank you."

"Mum, dad," he greeted with a smile, pulling the two into a hug as soon as they were within reach. "I'm glad you made it. Sorry that you probably didn't get to see very much, but I'm happy to see you."

"Of course we came, James," his father said with a grin. The women had immediately gone to analyze his son's physical wellbeing and it made Regulus's chest ache. "We would never have missed your game. Though it seems as though it may have to be rescheduled."

"Som-" he began when he saw Regulus standing behind them. He immediately grinned, standing up and walking past his parents. He reached up, pulling the boy in for a hug, "What happened?"

"Nothing," Regulus answered honestly, though he felt a sense of discomfort with the PDA in front of his parents. "People were ready to fight and they backed down. Guess hexing a bunch of students wasn't exactly how they wanted to make their mark."

"Great, so now I can kill you for pulling that shit."

"James Fleamont Potter, watch your mouth," his mother scolded and the two boys jumped. "And introduce us to him already, would you?"

James cleared his throat before gesturing to Regulus, "Mum, Dad, this is Regulus. He's my- Well, he's-"

Regulus watched as the boy struggled to label what it was that they were. He smiled slightly before filling in, surprising both himself and James, "Boyfriend."

"Yeah, boyfriend," James said, though he seemed a bit dazed by the new title. "Regulus, these are my parents."

"Fleamont Potter," his father announced, sticking his hand out and Regulus took it. "But you can call me Monte. It's a pleasure to meet the boy who made our son fall so hard."

"I'm Euphemia," his mother greeted, taking the boy by surprise and pulling him into a hug.

"Uh, mum-" James began but his mother ignored him.

Regulus was tense as the women released him, "You can call me Mia." She smiled warmly and Regulus understood where James got his kindness from, "I'm happy to meet you, too. Sirius has told me so much about you."

Regulus blinked slowly as he processed what she said, "He has?"

"All of the time," she nodded. "I'm glad you've finally let yourself see the light."

"Mum!" he said quickly, "Dad! Do you think we could have a moment?"

"Yes, of course," Fleamont said as he moved his arm around his wife and led her across the room.

James closed the curtain around them before pulling Regulus towards him again, resting his face in the boy's neck. "I'm not going anywhere, Jamie," he pointed out but he moved his arms around the boy. "I'm sorry."

"You're an idiot, you know that, right?" James said and Regulus rolled his eyes. "An absolute idiot," he shook his head in disbelief. "What were you thinking?"

"I was thinking that my parents had gone too far and-"

"Not that," he countered, "Well, we'll get to that." He shook his head. "Diving after me? That was stupid. You could've gotten hurt."

Regulus narrowed his eyes, "You're joking, right?" When James didn't waver, Regulus shook his head, "You were falling to your presumable death, James. I wasn't just going to let that happen."

"Remus had it handled, we had a plan."

"I had a backup plan," he countered, "Do you know how close you came to hitting the ground? From the height you fell, the speed could have killed you, at best. The height that I fell, small injury. And I'm fine outside of maybe a broken rib." James smiled slightly and Regulus's eyes narrowed even more, "What?"

"Nothing."

Regulus rolled his eyes, turning to leave, "I'll come back when you're being less ridiculous-" James grabbed his arm and pulled him back towards him. He pulled him down, pressing his lips against his. Regulus was surprised at first but eventually reacted, pulling him closer. After a moment, they parted slightly, "What was that for?"

"Because I can," he replied.

"I'm gonna head back to my room, give you and your parents some time," he explained after a moment, "I'll come by and see you in between classes. If that's okay?"

"Of course that's okay," he said, though it was clear something was bothering him.

"What is it?"

"Is it safe?"

"Is what safe?" he asked in confusion.

"Going to your common room," he answered. "Just, with everything..."

"Oh," Regulus replied, "I can handle myself pretty well."

"I know, it's just-"

"Jamie," he said, sliding his hand over his cheek, "I'll be okay, promise." He pressed a quick kiss to his lips, "Goodnight, get some rest, mon amour. I love you."

James smiled, his cheeks turning slightly pink, "I love you, too."
