Chapter 7
Woke up at 6 am by Ruby. There was no time for jokes now.
I ate my breakfast, I couldn't skip it everyone was watching me.
I wasn't left alone, even for a second, maybe other tributes were trying to run away in past years.
I got dressed in some random clothes, knowing that Pluto will change them anyway.
The peacekeepers walked with me to the hovercraft. All the other tributes were there. Marvel was far from me. I couldn't talk to him, I think they did that on purpose.
Next to me there was the guy from 12, he looked terrified. I gave him a cold look, little does he knows that he will die soon.
"Your arm." A woman demands.
I give her my hand and she puts a tracker in it.
Soon, we were transported underground, they make sure that we don't see the arena. I remember that the games start at 10 am so it has to be around that now.
I get to the room signed
"District 1 Female"
This way they don't have to change it each year, I think how many women walked through that door.
Then Pluto gave me some clothes. Green t-shirt with a brown jacket. Black trousers and brown shoes, finally something that doesn't uncovers that much skin.
When Pluto finishes putting my hair in two braids, Ruby and Cashmere walks in.
"You're lucky that they let you keep your necklace." She said as she gave it to Pluto so he can put it on me.
"Did you seriously thought that they wouldn't notice that spike under the ring?"
I almost forgot about it, I didn't know what to say.
"It's complicated." I reply.
"I managed to convince them that you didn't know about it. They will give you the ring back after the games."
I nod.
"Now listen carefully, Glimmer. No matter on what kind of arena you will get on, the gamemakers can make it wild so you have to be prepared for everything. When the countdown starts grab the nearest weapon and focus on killing off tributes that are carrying something out of the Cornucopia." Cashmere explains.
I nod my head, the first minutes of the games are called the Bloodbath. This is the time when most tributes die and us careers have a chance to present ourselves.
"You need to be quick, there are gonna be 24 people around you." Ruby adds.
"She is gonna have four allies though." Cashmere argues.
"It's not always like that so watch your back."
When Ruby was on the arena, the tributes from 4 tried to kill her during the Bloodbath and killed her District partner. No wonder that she doesn't trust careers now.
"We know that you can win this, Glimmer." Cashmere took my hand.
She had tears in her eyes, I hug her with an excuse of making her feel better. In fact, I just wanted to feel some warmth before the games.
The tube behind me opens, it's time to say goodbye.
"Good luck." Ruby smiles.
I step into the tube, I can't describe how I feel. I am scared but also feel adrenaline in my veins.
I go up and see the count down.
10...
I look around the Cornucopia is surrounded by a forest
8...
There is the boy from 11 on my right and the girl from 8 on my right.
7...
The bow is close, I can easily sprint to it in few seconds.
5...
The adrenaline is in my veins, I can feel it.
3...
The most important items are in the back, that's what I have to focus on.
1...
"Let the 74th Hunger Games begin."
The gong sounds and I sprint to the bow. As soon as it's in my hands, I look around and run into the back of Cornucopia. That's where I see Cato who is busy taking the swords.
He puts them all on a pile and takes one, making it clear that this is where we put our supplies.
I then hear a canon.
The first canon, I'm not sure who it belonged to because it's followed by another.
I can see a girl from 10 take a bag with food, I quickly shoot an arrow at the back of her head. Another canon sounds, I take the food from her and put it on the swords.
I see another girl try to take something.
"Put the boxes around the supplies!" I tell to Marina who happens to be around. She nods.
I take the sword from the pile that Cato left.
It's not hard to pin her to the ground, the adrenaline takes control over me. I repeatedly stab her in different parts of her body. After her cannon another one sounds. As I take away her stuff and put it on a pile.
I see a girl from 11 take away a piece of food and ran away, meanwhile another cannon fires.
Just when I was about to let the arrow out in her direction, I heard Cato's voice.
"Duck!"
I am not sure if it was said to me but I do it anyway.
I make a good choice because an axe passes above my head.
The one who threw it was Jason, the guy from 6 that Cato wanted to have revenge on. I let him have the kill.
I then watch how Cato kills Jason. I take my arrow. I could easily kill him from here, just one shot and I wouldn't have to worry about him till the end of the games.
Then I think about the alliance, how it would make Clove or Marvel want to kill me. Not because I killed my ally but because they would be worried that I kill them, besides no one wants a traitor as an ally.
I take the arrow back and go to take the supplies away as Jason's cannon fires.
I managed to look through some dead bodies which had many things in their hands. Sleeping bags, medicine and food. I put it all on the pile.
Two cannons sound at the same time, I can see Clove throwing a knife at a girl from 9 and Marvel stabbing also a girl but from 7.
I then see a boy with a spear but it's not Marvel. It's a boy with number five written on his back.
He comes to close to me to shoot him.
We roll on the ground but in the end I stabbed him in the chest with a sword.
"Is it over?" Clove asks.
We loom around, no alive tributes anywhere.
But then we heard a cannon.
Cato threw the dead body of Max on the ground.
"He was hiding at the back." Cato explained.
I then spot Marina sit next to Max.
I looked around the dead bodies.
"Eleven in total." Marvel states.
"How many did you got?" Cato asks him.
"Two. A guy from 8 and a girl from 7."
He then turns to Clove.
"Both tributes from 9."
Then it came to me.
"I got three. A girl from 10, 6 and a guy from 5." I reply.
Then Marina looks up from Max's body when she feels that everyone is looking at her.
"I didn't got any, I was taking the supplies."
"I see, I got two also. It was Jason from 6 and Max."
It came to me that I had the most kills. I feel kinda proud but also worried how it will affect my role.
We watched as the hovercraft was taking all the bodies.
"Let's see what supplies we have."
We looked through the pile.
"From weapons we have, two swords, a spear, a bow, throwing knives and an axe." Marina started.
"Then from food we have, some apples, bread and a bag of nuts."
"What about water?" Clove asks.
"Three bottles."
"Only three?" Clove complains.
"It's good news, it means that there will be water in the arena." Mravel says.
"Alright, something else?"
"Two sleeping bags, some bandages, fever pills, pain killers, rubbing alcohol, rope, nets, two boxes of matches and a tent."
I felt satisfied with the supplies, looks like we're gonna be safe for now.
"That's great." Cato approved.
"What now?" Marvel asked to Cato.
When we agreed that he is our leader? Maybe when we realized that he can easily kill us.
"We should look around the forest for sure." Cato proposed.
"Yeah but we can't leave everything like that here." I replied.
"I can stay here if you want and you can go." Marina explained.
"Cool, let's go."
We then went to the forest, each one of us had a weapon.
Just as planned, I had a bow, Marvel had a spear, Cato had a sword and Clove her throwing knives.
I'm glad we didn't land in an arena with only rocks to beat with. One year, they gave tributes only tools to make weapons instead of actual ones.
I try to be as focused as possible, literally anything can happen here and we have to be prepared for it.
"I have a bad feeling about Marina." Cato states.
"What do you mean?" Marvel asks.
"She didn't kill anyone on the Bloodbath and now volunteered to not go hunting." He explains.
"It feels like she doesn't want to kill anyone." Clove adds.
"She got a high training score, though. It means that she definitely is capable of killing." I reply.
I can agree that something about Marina feels odd. As if she didn't want to be a career. District 4 has its rebellious side, maybe she hates the games? But why would she volunteer for ones, then?
"Whatever, we will kill her as soon as we stop needing her." Clove tells us.
"Yeah, for now, she can keep on guarding." Cato states.
I wonder what's going on inside of minds of those two. I'll never know.
They feel so similar to careers from one but yet so different.
After an hour of a walk, we hear something moving on our left.
"Someone is here!" Cato told us.
We all take out our weapons and then we saw District 12 boy rolling down from a hill, right under our feet.
