Chapter 2
The train was full of luxury items. It was beautiful, just like I imagined.
Marvel was sitting next to me. I tried not to pay much attention to him, I don't know if he would want to kill me later.
Two of our mentors arrive.
Cashmere and Gloss.
The siblings that won the Hunger Games. They won the games next to eachother, making District 1 win two times in the row.
I was seven when that happened, however I still quite remember those games. I remember, the way everyone in my District cheered after Cashmere won after Gloss.
"Hello, I'm Cashmere and this is Gloss," "We will be your main mentors this year, however if you want help from other victors just say a word and they will come." Cashmere explained.
With that amount of victors, it's hard for everyone to mentor two kids.
"Don't forget about Ruby." Gloss tells her.
"Oh, right I almost forgot!" She claps her hands.
"Ruby as you might know is the victor of 72nd games, she will also be your main mentor. However she will come to us later."
"Why?" Marvel asks.
"Because right now the doctor is taking the cast off her hand after she broke it." Cashmere says.
I remember her talking about that in one interview, Ruby practises karate as a hobby. She had an accident during one of her practices and broke her left hand. Apparently, today they are taking her cast off.
As far as my teacher explained to me, in our District because we have too many victors, there are three main mentors ones and the others are only helping. It's always the victor that haven't mentored before plus two others.
"We have a week, before you two enter the arena." Gloss said.
I noticed that Cashmere was talking to us more like with little kids while Gloss like with his new students.
"So, let's talk about something that they don't teach you in training academy." "The sponsors."
Sponsors. People who send gifts to tributes on the arena.
"To get sponsors, you have to make people love you in order to get them."
"You won't win to know how to fight, you have to make people adore you, make them want you to survive."
"Everything they thought you in that academy is bulshit. Being from District 1 makes you a career, fighting skills make you a threat, sponsors make you the victor."
"Oh, Gloss you don't have to scare them like that on the first day." Cashmere told him.
"It's the Hunger Games, Cash. Better scare them now than on the arena."
"You two take rest now, we will call you later."
Just like that me and Marvel went to separate rooms. I lying on the bed I was aware of the fact that Gloss and Cashmere are probably arguing right now.
Still, I decided to turn on the tv and watch the reapings of other Districts.
First I watched the District 2's one. The tall strong boy named Cato was the male tribute. When he volunteered no one had enough courage to stop him.
His District partner was Clove, she and the other girl volunteered at the same time. However, Clove started fighting with the girl until she was taken away by the peacekeepers.
At District 4 reaping, a sixteen year old girl volunteered as a tribute. The boy didn't volunteer however, it was a really young boy who started crying when got picked.
I thought about those four people.
Me, Marvel and them are going to be the careers this year. I don't know them but I will have to work with them.
But what about the end? Will I have to kill them? There were few times where something like this happen, mostly District 2 tributes attack District 1. Some do it only when they have to but some do it in the middle of the games. However, there are times when the career tributes just get killed by somethings else.
I was thinking of a way to impress sponsors. Then I got in mind that one thing that everyone loves in me.
My looks.
I have always been the pretty popular girl. My appearance is so important to me and I worked so hard on it.
All the meals that I threw up or skipped, extra trainings, feeling sick,
This can all be worth it now.
...
Couple of hours later, I got called on dinner. I didn't want to go but I didn't have much choice.
I looked at the chicken legs and all the other food on the table. Back in District 1, I avoided food as much as I could. I could eat one apple for the entire day.
This is much more than one apple.
I started eating the chicken and looked at Marvel. I realized that I forgot to change from my reaping clothes.
"Nice dress." He told me.
"Thanks."
"What a girl like you is doing in Hunger Games? With that appearance you could easily be a model."
"Being the Hunger Games victor is better paid." I rolled my eyes.
"I can see you're not afraid of death."
I couldn't believe he had guts to say that. If I'm pretty then I can't fight?
I looked at him visibly offended.
"Wait, that's not what-"
Suddenly, Cashmere and Gloss walked into the room.
"Sorry, we're late!"
I was glad that our talk was over. I think it's safe to say that Marvel is planning to kill me.
"So, now I will take separately with Glimmer and Gloss will speak with Marvel."
"Alright, I just have to go to the bathroom first."
I quickly went to the restroom and threw up all the food in the toilet. Flushing it all down and washing my face to not get any suspicions. I have been doing this for almost two years now.
I then went to the room where Cashmere want to talk with me in. We sat infront of eachother on blue soft chairs.
"Did you think of a way to impress sponsors?" She asks.
"Yeah. I'm gonna be the pretty girl that everyone loves." I reply proudly.
Cashmere smiles as if was remainding herself of some events in her life.
"Is it a bad idea?" I ask.
"No, it's good. But remember what price you have to pay for your beauty and that it's not always worth it."
She took my hands. What is she talking about? Does she know about my eating disorders? Or maybe she went through them herself?
"Because sometimes people will be greedy and they will want to take it away from you."
She smiled with tears in her eyes.
What is she talking about? Is it something that happened in her games? Or perhaps after them?
