Chapter 3: Cold
I take one last glance at the parked SUV as I widen the distance between us. The SUV's windows are tinted so I can't see George, though I can feel his eyes trained on me. We were both on high alert, a consequence of Jack's absence.
I don't bother slinging the bag over my shoulder, instead I walk holding it tight against my chest. I don't expect to take long, since the barn is almost 100 metres away.
I notice a change in the ground under my feet when I'm about to cross the fence. No one mows the lawn around here, I muse, as my feet slightly sink in an ocean of ankle high grass.
As I approach the barn, its light illuminates the cars allowing me to pick out a few details. I notice that they all look new and lack any license plates. Two saloons and a van, all black. The absence of the license plates is weird but I don't dwell on that fact too much.
I'm a couple meters away from the barn, its partially open double doors giving me an ominous feeling. I take a deep breath and reduce my speed, walking as slow as possible in order to mask my footsteps, although I'm sure my heartbeat is loud enough to be heard by the waiting George.
I'm hit by a freezing atmosphere the moment I phase through the right barn door. The air feels heavy for some reason, and I feel myself catch an imaginary cold.
For the first time since I discovered my abilities, I almost unintentionally loose my active invisibility and phasing. I stand still for a moment, I hate the cold. As I strengthen my shaken control over my abilities, the contents of the barn catch my eye. It's absolutely empty, apart from two men at the far end of the barn opposite me, each on one corner of the rectangular building.
They're wearing some spandex like clothes, which hug their bodies tightly and I can clearly see that their average bodies are in shape. I notice weird gauntlets on their arms but no other clearly visible weapons. Their black sunglasses match the black color of their clothing, giving them a cool ninja vibe.
They're staring right in my direction, probably watching the door, and as I expected, they are completely oblivious to my presence. A lone wooden table sits at the centre of the barn, that's where I should place the bag I guess.
Content in my inspection of the barn, I take my first step after adjusting to the low temperature and stark contrast in lighting from outside. The rubber soles under my shoes helps mask my footsteps on the concrete floor. Being tiny means that I'm light, I'll be gone before they realize I was ever here.
Inches away from the table, I feel the familiar tingly sensation of phasing through an object. Only there's nothing solid around me apart from the table ahead. Before I can find out the reason behind the tingly sensation, the ground shakes as I hear an explosion outside.
I almost drop the bag as my body turns around instinctively to face the barn doors. The previously partially open barn doors were now closed. How did I not hear them close shut, this is bad, might that explosion have been connected to George? My heartbeat pounds in my ears as I shiver from the cold in the room. I decide to drop the bag on the spot and run out.
The two men at the back of the room who had remained unmoved despite the loud explosion suddenly lunge towards the centre of the barn the moment I let go of the bag, which had now become visible.
Their sudden movement entice a gasp out of me. They are in a full run by the time I'm fully turned and running towards the doors myself. My mind races as the sound of heavy footsteps echo in the cavernous barn, what the heck is going on.
I sneak a glance behind me and see that the two men are still running despite passing the spot where the bag lay. Could they be after me? Impossible. I don't bother masking the sound of my footsteps anymore as I will my legs to deliver me straight to the SUV.
Time seems to slow down as the barn doors burst open. A guy, probably 17 or 18, accompanied by two other black clad men step into the barn and the temperature drops even lower. The boy is blonde and his icy blue eyes stare straight into mine as I barrel towards him.
I ignore the fact that we just made eye contact despite my invisibility and close the distance between us. Maintaining his stare on me, the guy, almost as tall as the men beside him, raises his left arm and to my shock, releases a smoke-like mist that hits the floor, immediately turning concrete to ice.
I'm too preoccupied trying to understand what just happened to notice I've closed the distance between him and I. I don't bother slowing down, I'll just phase through him and go find out the source of the previous explosion, only something stops me.
As my feet are about to hit the thick grass outside my wrist is yanked back, disrupting my running momentum and throwing me straight onto the floor. I scream in pain at the impact and realize I'm no longer Invisible or phasing for that matter.
Sitting on the cold icy-concrete floor in the doorway, I look up to find myself surrounded by four towering figures and the blue eyed guy, clad in a t-shirt and sweat pants. I instinctively try to turn back invisible, I desperately need to get away.
I blink and will my abilities into action but shiver instead. Tears well up in my eyes as fear and panic spike my adrenaline, this wasn't like the other drop offs. I realize that I'm completely exposed and vulnerable, why was this happening?
"Trying to turn invisible and run glimmer? " Blue eyes asks in a chuckle as he squats down to meet my gaze.
"At least say hi to your business partners before you leave." he adds in a low tone that makes my insides twist while giving me a crawling sensation under my skin.
I back away from him, pushing myself back with my feet as my hands support my body while half sitting half laying on the ground.
My mouth moves before I can stop myself, "wha.. what have you dddd.. done to me?" I stutter, partially because I'm scared to death and partially because it is so cold that my breath leaves my mouth in misty clouds.
It was almost as if the closer the he got to me the cooler it would get. Him being inches away from me made my body shiver furiously.
"Can't seem to control your abilities in the cold, huh, the famous glimmer, oh how I've wanted to meet you."
I meet his eyes again and notice a faint blue glow in them, another round of shivers riddle my body as he continues.
"I'm Jay, I've got abilities too if it's not obvious already, seems the professor was right about my cold powers being the key to catching glimmer."
"Catch me?" My eyes go wide as I push myself on all fours and turn towards the direction of George, noticing a cloud of dark smoke visible under the moonlight in his direction.
"Trying to get to your friend? We took care of him already, he won't be saving you today." Jay says behind me, I'm already crawling away, I refuse to believe his cold words.
I fall back on my hands and knees whenever I try to stand up. Why am I suddenly so weak? Why does cold hinder my control over my abilities? I feel as if I'm in a nightmare, why did this have to happen today of all days, the only day Jack was away.
I push myself to crawl faster and wince when I register a sharp pain on my left wrist. That's where someone, I'm guessing Jay grabbed and yanked me back as I ran through him. My wrist is freezing, almost numb.
Grabbing me shouldn't have been possible, I've always though myself invincible during previous jobs, is cold really my weakness? Suddenly I want to get as far away from Jay as possible, I've always hated being cold.
The black clad men tighten the circle around me, preventing me from crawling further. A pair approach and grab each of my arms, hoisting me up to my feet.
By this time, tears are running freely down my cheeks and I scream as loud and as hard as my lungs let me. The result is dismal and I only manage an insignificant squeak, It's so cold that breathing is painful, my throat burns from the heavy inhaling I did in preparation for my scream.
"Get the diamonds, we have to go," The men around Jay react to his order and I wonder why this kid was in control.
On a warm day I could have easily freed myself from the grip of the two men holding me up, but now I could barely stand as the cold around me seems to intensify if that was even possible. All my attempts at struggle are easily thwarted by the raw strength of the black clad ninjas.
I can't feel my arms or legs as my light body is whisked towards the parked cars. I notice that the lights previously on in the main house were now off. Was it only Jay and the men here? Was Jay the verified partner? Who is the professor?
Heavy footsteps thud around me as the men run around, making preparations to leave. The bright light in the barn behind us goes off and the little illumination the light had offered disappears.
As my eyes adjust to the dimly lit night, I notice flickering embers under the thick smoke I saw earlier in George's direction. I refuse to believe they got him. I try screaming his name while turning my almost numb head and neck in his direction.
This time not even a squeak escapes my mouth. Is this how people feel before they die? I don't want to die, I'm not ready to die, please.
I feel him before I see him, Jay is now walking ahead of us, toward the parked van, a cold and unmistakable presence. He unlocks the back doors and glances at me while I hover over the ground in the rough hold of my captors.
"This was easier than I thought glimmer, get comfortable, I'm taking you to your new home."
My reactions are too sluggish and I can only watch as the men bundle me up into the back of the van, which is more spacious that I anticipated.
Jay joins me in the back, sitting opposite my unresponsive body as the back doors of the van click shut. Unable to sit up straight, I slump and fall to my side as my vision goes blurry. I can barely see Jay's wicked smile as everything slowly blends into black nothingness.
Jack's face appears momentarily behind my fluttering eyelids, then everything goes dark.
