Chapter 2: The Garage

The alarms echo in the empty bank hallway but I don't mind them, my work here is done anyway. A new sound joins into the echoes reverberating in the hallway, the stamping of guard boots on the marble floor as they rush to investigate the alarm trigger.

A total of three guards, each with flashlights and batons rush past me and I chuckle. This is always my favorite part of pulling a job, it is entirely impossible to catch me.

The guards head straight past the teller booths towards the vault where I had luxuriously spent the past thirty minutes. I really shouldn't be deliberately tripping the alarms but I just couldn't resist a chance to see the confused guards who never notice a thing out of place.

With the diamonds in my backpack, I leave the confused guards to their fate and see myself out.

It has been three years since I met Jack while running blindly after committing a horrific crime. Could have been murder had the ambulance not arrived in time to save the girl.

Thanks to Jack, not only am I in full control of my ability, but have discovered and mastered an additional one. In addition to phasing through objects, I can now turn myself invisible at will.

Once I mastered these two abilities, a year after we met, Jack couldn't wait to finally put me to the test. Having learnt to also include inanimate and animate objects in my invisibility and phasing abilities, Jack concluded that stealing valuable items would be the perfect utilization of my talents.

I then realized that Jack's illegal activities was the reason why I knew nothing about him yet he was a close friend to my parents. He was mostly a criminal who engaged with shady characters and was a well known merchant in the black market.

By acquiring and selling rare and valuable items Jack lived a comfortable life, and now, so do I.

I walk right through the bank walls and out into the street beyond. The familiar tingly sensation as I phase through objects makes me giggle before I step outside. Training with Jack has made it so easy to use my abilities.

Just as anyone can blink or flex a particular muscle at will, I can activate both my abilities and use them simultaneously in a similar simple fashion. Jack always mentioned how convenient the combination of these two abilities was, and I couldn't agree more.

During the past two years Jack has been training me on the goings of the underworld, key players to watch for and how to perform the transactions.

Upon the discovery of my prowess, Jack and I decided that we would begin taking bigger risks with larger rewards. Rather than acquiring and selling items, we now go for particular items requested by verified buyers. This time however, Jack let me work for an associate to 'recover' diamonds that were stolen. Honestly I don't care if I'm stealing from the rightful owner as long as we get paid.

As I'm a few meters away from the bank, blaring police sirens catch my ear. That was fast, normally I would be long gone before the authorities arrive. These must be some expensive diamonds then, because they sure are heavy.

My skills may have grown over the past three years but my body hasn't grown much. I'm only a little less tinier than I initially was, standing at a boastful height of 5 feet. However, Jack says I may be comparable to even him in terms of brute strength.

I break into a run, just for the hell of it, I need to be done so I can watch some cartoons back home before the next job. I guard such a small treasure greedily because it reminds me that I'm a child and keeps life light. Before my parents died I used to attend school, had friends, played with them, yet now I'm dealing with criminal masterminds who are probably wanted in certain countries.

It's 3 am yet the streets are packed, I really hate older teenagers and their simplistic life I wish I had. As I'm running through people, all tingly and excited I catch a glimpse of my reflection on an office building, yes I'm invisible but my silhouette is apparently visible.

A couple of jobs back, a jewelry store released footage of a mystery robbery where diamonds worth several millions of dollars disappeared, no locks broken and the safe was never tampered with either. I would know all about this because I was there.

Upon careful analysis of the camera footage of the robbery night by techies, a human light silhouette could be seen going into and out of the store. The silhouette of feeble light was eventually described as a glimmer and that was the name attached to my criminal activities.

The details were on air in the news a month after the jewelry store robbery and Jack almost lost consciousness. Despite being a dark criminal and an un-supervising guardian, Jack apparently cared for my safety, and demanded we stop placing my life at risk.

I had promised to be more careful in subsequent jobs which mostly calmed him. By taking high value minerals and items, Glimmer had attracted the attention of renowned museums, banks and art galleries. Yes, some would consider me famous.

After 15 minutes of running I get to the location of the designated cab, and sure enough, my usual cab driver is waiting in his cab.

"Cabs melt into the surrounding environment seamlessly almost like you when invisible." Jack had said once, after I had asked the reasoning behind using cabs as the getaway car.

Ever since the start of the jobs two years back, we've used the same driver, George, but different cabs each time. Apart from Jack, he is the other person with whom I interact with most. I have the habit of scaring him each time at my pickup.

After checking that it is indeed him in the cab, I slowly maneuver and phase into the back seat as noiselessly as possible. That would be a cool new ability, being able to mask my presence entirely. I may be invisible but anyone could hear me breathe or adjust my posture if they were close enough.

Once settled, I yell, "WHAT'S THE HOLDUP!" and watch George have a mini heart attack and squirm crazily in his seat.

"Goddamn you Leah, you'll kill me one day."

He recovers almost instantly and pretends not to have been startled. I laugh, a real hearty laugh as I relax and become visible again. I like George, and his curly hair, bushy eyebrows, the crooked smile and otherwise skinny figure. He is always a good sport.

"How'd it go at the bank?" he asks as he pulls into the road and joins the flowing traffic.

"Withdrawal successful, my teller was extra friendly today" I chirp.

I place the bag of diamonds at my feet, not bothering to peep into the bag like I usually would, back when I was a rookie. Initially, seeing the jewelry, art piece or diamonds I stole added to the allure of the night but recently everything had become routine, the jobs were getting boring.

I especially hated having to get to the cab so far away from the buildings I stole from, even though I knew It was for safety reasons.

"Tonight's location is especially sketchy, you ready kid?" George asks, pulling me out of my thoughts.

I look up and meet his eyes on the rear view mirror. I faint a smile, "Of course, I'm always ready."

Normally Jack would be around whenever we delivered the product but he wasn't going to be around this time. I'd usually complain and say I don't need a body guard, that I can handle myself, but right now, I felt his absence.

Over the past couple of years I grew accustomed to his bulky figure around me, as a tether, holding me back in case I stray too far away, or as a rock, somewhere to draw my confidence from.

My heartbeat hastened, even though I knew I had nothing to worry about.

George pulls the cab over, next to a dark garage which I recognize as our car stash. A single light turns on in the building and the gates open, it was time to switch vehicles.

This used to be another exciting part of the night, picking out the armored vehicle to deliver the product. The garage has several floors spiraling up the building, each with vehicles of different models. All our cars were bullet and mine proof, including the cabs.

Once inside the gates, a garage door lifts upwards and we drive in, I wave a hello to our weary mechanic, Haru, a grump to boot. He just nods in acknowledgement and closes the garage doors once we are parked. He doesn't like me doing these dark deeds, the man has a family of his own including a daughter almost my age.

I let George pick out the car we would use as I head to the bathroom and to also to grab a bunch of snacks. He must have noticed how off I seemed today judging by the surprised look he gave me after I asked.

I hurry off, eager to see what snacks Haru had stocked up on this time. He might be grump but he always knows what I like. Whenever I use my abilities for a lengthened period of time, hunger sets in even faster than normal, which isn't a bad thing since I get to eat whatever while maintaining my petite figure.

We usually stop for about ten minutes before heading out again. Today's rendezvous was set up at 3.30 am which means I'll probably be home by 5 am. I stuff a bunch of strawberry pop tarts, a couple of chocolate bars and a box of glazed chicken wings into a grocery bag and head back to the garage.

George has picked a silver SUV, one I've never rode on before, that's interesting. Haru is finishing up strapping a bullet proof vest onto George, can't be to careful on deliveries.

Despite his scrawny appearance, George used to be an experienced marksman in the military and a mercenary after he served his tour. At 45, he was glad to meet Jack for this cushy and somewhat safe gig.

As I climb onto the passenger seat I realize I didn't pee. I close my eyes for a moment to take an assessment of my bladder and conclude that I can probably hold whatever's in there for another two hours.

Once satisfied, I pull the door shut and check the back seat. Sure enough the bag with the stolen diamonds sits right in the middle, good work George. I notice a couple of rifles too, set on each of the back doors. Boys got to have their toys huh, I hate guns for no legitimate reason.

I pull out the to-go box with the wings and dig in. George enters a minute later,

"Hey, save some for me!" He exclaims, I shoot him an incredulous look, "Just kidding kid, even I know not to get between you and your food."

No way I was gonna share.

We pull out of the garage and back into the road, driving away from the city limits and the city lights. The darkness always comforts me. There can't be a glimmer if there are no lights around. Most kids fear the dark but this kid celebrates it.

The man that paid Jack and me to get the diamonds sent the coordinates of the delivery location which were now set into the SUV's GPS. The destination is some derelict farm a short distance outside the city limits.

The normal procedure would be Jack and an invisible Leah going into the building in the said location, while George waits in his armored haven. Today would be different, I would go in, invisible as usual but alone.

In the receiver's perspective, a bag would materialize at the said location before their eyes, that is if I walk as quietly as possible.

The GPS voice chirps, two minutes estimated arrival time, damn heart, beat much?

The farm comes into view, a dirt road branches off the main highway towards a light in the distance. I can make out the odd shapes of a fence, a barn and the main house. My target drop off point is the barn, I feel like telling George to turn back but I push that feeling aside. Time to grow up, Jack can't always be there.

We turn into the dirt road as I swallow the last of the wings. My stomach feels weirdly empty despite having just eaten. I begin having second thoughts on today's drop off as a bad feeling nags at the back of my mind.

As the headlights to our SUV catches the distant farm, I can make out three vehicles and lights on in several rooms of the main house. The light we saw from the road came from the barn.

"Time to get this done," I say to George as he parks he SUV a little far off from the main compound.

"This is a verified partner so there shouldn't be any danger, he has worked with Jack before, just drop off the bag and come back." George whispers, as if sensing my nerves.

Pushing the remaining food to the floor at my feet, I reach back and pick the bag of diamonds. I don't bother saying anything else to George as he adjusts his rifles. I blink and go invisible, another tight blink and my feet hit the ground as I phase out of the car. Its go time.
