Chapter 23
The sky was getting brighter by the minute. Darker shades of blue were giving way to its lighter shades. They sat on the bench, facing each other. She rested her head on her knees, while he yawned wide and stretched.
“Question number 15. Why are you travelling to the south?” she asked him as soon as he stopped stretching.
“I have a wedding to attend,” he replied.
“Whose wedding?” she asked.
“A friend’s wedding.” He replied.
“Tell me the whole truth.”
She watched him look down to his shoes, then at the sky and then down again.
“Come on. You can tell me,” she pushed him a little.
“Well…” he contemplated on whether to tell her or not, until he finally said it out loud.
“I am going to my ex-girlfriend’s wedding.”
Her jaw dropped. “What? Why? Please don’t!”
“I thought I’ll go and give her my best wishes,” he said looking elsewhere.
“You are not even meeting eyes with me. Clearly you have a hidden agenda. What is it?” she shook his arm.
“I have no hidden agenda. I was just planning to go and tell her to have a wonderful f**king life with whoever he is.”
She cracked up at this and started laughing out loud at the sudden turn it took. He covered his eyes with his hand and eventually started laughing with her. As their laugh subsided, she asked him.
“You were going to sabotage their wedding, weren’t you?”
“No!” he defended himself, “I was not! Maybe…I don’t know…”
Head tilted to a side, she watched him as she waited for him to continue.
“I hadn’t thought about it much. As soon as I got to know that she was getting married, I just grabbed my bags and booked whatever tickets were available at this hour. Why else would I be travelling by train or be stuck in this hidden town? No one willingly travels by train these days.”
She just smiled at him as he spoke. Suddenly it hit him, and he quickly added.
“You are willingly travelling by train, aren’t you?”
She nodded with much enthusiasm.
“Maybe I had hoped she’ll come back to me if she sees me. Maybe I just wanted to see her once. Maybe she’ll be surprised to see me there in the first place.”
Her eyes suddenly popped when she realized something.
“You were not invited to the wedding, were you?”
He pretended not to hear her and then asked, “I’m sorry what? I didn’t quite catch that.”
She hit his arm and he laughed.
“You are actually going to your ex’s wedding, that too uninvited?”
“I guess. But I don’t know anymore, if I should go.”
She nodded her head understandingly. She said, “I’m glad that you are at least considering not going. If you ask me, it's a stupid idea.”
He nodded in response. She nodded back. They nod their head together in sync. While he continued this action, he asked, “Do you feel we nod a lot?”
She replied as she nodded, “I will nod a yes to that.”
“My neck hurts. What time is it?” he asked her. She raised his arm, checked his watch and said, “It's past 5.30am. We should hurry back.”
They stood up and stretched. Yawning wide, she looked around. Sky was much more beautiful now. It would be sunrise soon. She turned to him and asked, “Let’s go?”
“Let’s go!”
They turned around and started walking towards the station.
“You do realize we still have five more questions to go.”
“It's not homework!”
“I have a question. Why is your hair ‘blue’?”
“That’s a stupid question.”
“Yeah I just realized that. I take it back.”
“You should take it back. It's a very stupid question.”
And their conversation continued.
