6: going 'home'
Conan's POV:
I spent the rest of the weekend and Monday at Kuroba kuns house, the random changes to teen and back happening twice more. I deduced the cause of my random changes was caused by the prolonged exposure to the powder from the pill in my pocket, but I wasn't really worried. Kuroba kun was there, each time, holding me close as I screamed in agony, my body either shrinking or growing too fast.
He had introduced me formally to his two canine assistants, wolf chan and Arthur kun. The malamute had sat down and offered her left paw politely, and I shook it. (I was conan at the time) Arthur was the younger dog, a brindle greyhound puppy, and couldn't sit still, he greeted me by knocking me over and licking my face. I laughed, and pushed the big dog off. The greyhound was bitten on the nose, telling me that wolf chan was the more dominant one of the two. By the end of Monday, (I felt guilty about missing school) I had started calling Kuroba kun kaito kun, and he was calling me shin chan, or conan kun depending on whether I was child or teen.
On Monday morning, my random changes had subsided, and according to wolf chan (it felt weird watching the big malamute type on a laptop, but I had to admit, it was just like kid to have such an intelligent animal as a pet) the drug should be completely out of my system by now. I had decided to stay with the magician theif for two reasons, one, I enjoyed him company, and two, it was to risky for me to wander around when I was flipping back and forth between Conan and shinichi. We spent the day explaining to each other why we did what we did, me with hiding my identity, and him with stealing the gems. I already knew the basics, but I learnt a lot more that afternoon.
By about five in the evening, kaito commented that I hadn't changed for several hours, and maybe it was time to get be back to the 'scary Mouri girl'. I didn't really want to, I wanted to stay with the hot thief and get to know him better, but I was going to give ran a nervous breakdown if I didn't show up soon.
"Kaito kun, if your going to drop me off at the Mouri detective agency, I suggest you dress as anyone but yourself or my teen form, ran will be in a mood at shinichi, and liable to throw a good karate kick or something if she sees him...." I warn him, as he gives me a childish grin and changes swiftly into casual clothes that I would wear if I were a teen. I inwardly groan, I hoped he knew what he was getting himself into, ran could be dangerous when mad. (I remembered shortly before I shrunk, she punched and severely dented a street lamp...I can't even remember why)
Kaito naturally looked like me, which to be honest was a blessing, especially if ran got suspicious yet again. To desguise as me, he simply had to change his birds nest hairstyle to something a bit neater. He escorted me back to the detective agency, where ran could be heard as she yelled at uncle again. Kaito kun nodded to me, watching me walk up the stairs and into the agency.
"Tadaimas..." I announced as I walked in. Ran stopped mud kick and ran over to me, hugging me and telling me not to wander off like that again. I laugh nervously and glance out of the window, noting that Kaito kun was still there, watching us. Ran noticed too, glancing out, she saw him, and (much to my surprise) she leapt out of the second floor window (first floor if your British) yelling abuse at 'shinichi' for hiding me away. I've never seen the thief run so fast, I could see, even from there, that his poker face as he called it was cracked and terror displayed on his face, clear as day.
Ran eventually came back, seemingly calm. (Wondered what had happened to my favourite thief, had she caught him, I hoped not). She made some sushi for me, which I ate happily, I hadn't realised I was hungry, until the detective agency phone rang. Ran answers, the after a few short words, hand the phone to me.
"Oi, Kudo kun, where were you? You used the drug I gave you, didn't you? Come over to Agasa hakase's house as soon as you can, I need to talk to you about something." It was haibara, a particularly cold note to her voice. I inwardly shuddered. Now I had two dangerous women mad at me. A karate expert and a mad scientist. wonderful.
I arrived at hakase's house, secretly worried. Haibara could be unpredictable when upset, like the time she put chilli powder in my pants, or the time she broke down in tears because she blamed me for her sister's death. I walked in, and made my way to the sofa, noting that haibara and hakase were both in th kitchen, arguing about what hakase should have for dinner. Haibara eventually won the argument, and noticed me sat there.
"Kudo kun! Glad you came!" She exclaims happily. I look at her warily. She was being far too cheerful. She was upto something, I knew she was. "When did you take the antidote?" She asks me, a notebook laptop ready, so she could make notes. She was working hard on a permenant antidote, but I think she needed the original data to get any further. I explained what had happened, from being shot off the building to walking into the detective agency this evening. (I omitted the parts where I found out kaito kid's identity and the kiss I had given him....)Haibara listened intently, seemingly ignoring Agasa hakase as he made himself some dinner (that haibara would not agree with).
"Kudo kun! You should have put it somewhere safe, not in your pocket. Goodness knows how a slow release like that has effected you. You say you changed back into kudo shinichi three times?" Haibara was whisper yelling, clearly annoyed at me. Her reddish brown hair hid her face from view as she typed something up onto her laptop. I grinned to myself. Why did she remind me of that malamute dog that kid owned?
"Oi, haibara, I'm fine. Kid disguised as 'shinichi niichan' to take me home, and I stayed at his accomplices home until my changes had subsided. Nobody except kid, his two assistants and you know about my sporadic changes the other day. I'm fine see?" The girl glared at me, obviously not believing a word. She yells at me again, asking me how I can be so sure Kid's assistants wouldn't tell anyone. (I hadn't told her they were dogs yet....) I stayed silent, waiting for her to calm down. Hakase was trying to eat his supper in peace, eating as fast as he could, before haibara could take the unhealthy snack away. (I had a sudden image rush through my mind, of genta at hakase age)
She called ran and told her that I was staying at hakase house tonight, putting hakase on the phone to confirm it. As he spoke to ran, trying to reassure her I wasn't going anywhere, I noticed haibara stealthily remove the remaining snacks Agasa hakase had made, hiding them away. I didn't sleep much that night, not that I slept much most nights anyway, instead spending the small hours with haibara, discussing the remaining four black org members (Gin, Vodka, Vermoth, Boss) their possible aims, and (of course) the drug that had shrunk me. Haibara was curious as to why I'd been affected in such a way, and she spent a good two hours just theorising all the potential problems.
We must have fallen asleep, because we were woken by Agasa hakase, telling us we'd be late for school. Much to her embarresment, haibara had fallen asleep leaning on my shoulder, but I wasn't bothered. I thought of her as my mentally older, physically younger sister. We rushed about, getting ready for school. Ran had promised to drop my bag off on her way to teitan high, so I wasn't worried about forgetting homework. We rushed out the door, bumping into Ayumi chan, Mitshuiko Kun and Genta kun as we left the gates.
"Ah! Conan kun! Your back! Sonoko oneesan told us you went missing!" They said in unison. I moaned inwardly. That Sonoko, why couldn't she stay quiet? I suddenly thought of something. Sonoko was a huge fan of kaito kid, she'd probably know something about the heist, something that happened after kid's escape. I made a mental note to ask her later, and continued to walk with the detective boys to school. The Sakura trees were beautiful, and I felt a bit nostalgic, remembering all the times I'd walked through them with ran when I was younger.
School passed uneventfully, at least, until just after lunch that is. I received at text from 'unknown' on kudo shinichi's phone. it read:
Shin~chan, meet me as soon as you can at the train station nearest my house. Something's happened.
I replied I'd be there right AFTER school, and went back to my school work. "Ne, ne, Conan kun, who was that?" Ayumi asked me. I shook my head, sensei was glaring at us. Ayimi got the message and shut up, forgetting about it until the end of the day. I was thankful for the skate board in my locker, I'd need it to escape those kids, and as soon as we were allowed to leave, rushed out no grabbed the blue and yellow rocket board, racing out of school as fast as I could.
"Oi, Edogawa kun!" I Heard a voice yell. I slowed down, stopping to let them all catch up. Ayumi asked me again what I had looked at on my phone. I grinned, my check, confident grin.
"Shinichi niichan asked me to help him" I say childishly, regretting it a few second later.
"The detective of the east asked Conan kun to help? Sugoi! Can we help him too?" Ayumi chan and Mitshuiko asked at the same time. I shook my head. Grabbing haibara and pulling her onto the skateboard infront of me. I stepped on the button, rocketing away from the three actual children, arriving at the train station for Ekoda and climbing abroad after buying two child tickets. Haibara followed me, silently.
Haibara Ai's POV:
Kudo kun was his usual self throughout the whole school day, showing no signs of and imminent change, which was a relief. I had come up with several excuses in case he suddenly began to change on the middle of class. He received a message after reading lunch, and seemed on edge for the rest of the day, miraculously managing to spend the best part of the last lesson asleep and still hand in a perfect scoring test, much to sensei's surprise. As soon as school ended, he raced out of the class room, obviously trying to lose us. Mitshuiko and the othe three detective boys giving chase, ayumi chan grabbed my hand and dragged me with her. Kudo kun was fast, probably because he'd been playing football and building his stamina back up after being shrunk by my worst creation, the one I had been forced to make as sherry.
"Oi, Edogawa kun, matté!" I called out, as he got on his rocket skateboard. He slowed down, allowing us to catch up. Ayumi chan asked him what he had read on his phone earlier. I had been to busy observing him, frightened that he might change in the middle of class, that I hadn't noticed him check his phone. H said something that made me bristle with anger, though I didn't show it.
"Shinichi neechan asked me to help him!" He said cheerfully. I glared a him, knowing that he couldn't have spoken to the eastern detective given that he was said detective. He must be referring to kaitou kid. Ayumi and the two boys didn know that though, and they seemed excited to meet such a famous teen, not realising that they'd met him before, back when I'd first tested the antidote on Edogawa kun. They practically begged him, but he ignored them, grabbing my arm ( which Ayumi let go of when we caught up to Kudo kun) and pulled me onto the skateboard, pressing his heel firmly on the button, speeding away from the annoyed looking children.
Once we were out of earshot, Kudo kun explained to me. I was annoyed. Shrieking at him angrily. His explanation had holes in it, he was hiding something, but I couldn't think about that now. We arrived at the train station and he dragged me onto a crowded train, direct to Ekoda. We got off at one of the older stations, Kudo kun leading me towards the exit.
Hattori's POV:
I watched da detective boys walk inta school on Tuesday mornin, glad to see kudo among them. I was worried bout im, I'd seen a guy in black follow da shrunken scientist girl yesterday, and it looked like he was waitin fer summin. I was abou' ta call out ta kudo, when someone grabbed me from behind, gaggin me with a damp cloth. I couldn't call out, an I smelt da sharp scent of chloroform before passin out. I wake up hours later, inside a familiar room. However, I wasn't tied up like last time, and kudo kun wasn't here either. I was on the cushion pile, two large dogs, the white malamute and brindle greyhound, guarding me. I get up, groggily wiping my face. I had a terrible headache, but chloroform wasn't Kid's style, so I gathered he musta gotten me outa whatever troble I was in. The big white dog barks, sending the smaller dog racing away, up a set of stairs I hadn't noticed before. This big white dog was well trained. Had kid trained it, or brought it like dat? I try ta leave da room, but da big white dog growls, clearly warnin me to stay. The white dog goes up ta a laptop which was open on da desk, picking up a pencil in its mouth.
I watched in fascination as da big animal uses da pencil to tap on da computer. Click, click, tap tap tap. Da animal then noses da computer aroun', lookin at me pointedly. I read what's written. It's in English, much to my dismay. I could speak English fluently, but I couldn't read it. My Agatha Christie books were all in hiragana. (A/N, is that right, hiragana? I'm not that well versed in Japanese writings) da big nog noticed this, an' taps it out again, this time in Japanese.
Stay put. Master just getting something.
I fetch friend, clever boy,
Little boy, like you. Change big then small.
Fast dog gone ahead, I go too.
YOU STAY. master be angry if you leave.
I blink, lookin aroun, wonderin if dis was some sorta joke thought up by Kudo. Wait, what? Little boy like me? He was seventeen! I looked down den, surprised I hadn't noticed before. I sat down suddenly, shocked. I was small, a child again. I silently curse Kudo for gettin me inta dis mess. Da big white dog leaves, growlin at me, clearly warnin me ta stay put. I was curious. Had dat dog actually typed dat, or was it some sorta trick?
Kaito's POV:
Geez, what is it about school? Hakuba was wearing a pink and white flowery bridal dress, all the girls were in kid costumes, and the rest of the boys were covered in glue and glitter. Aoko was swinging her mop at me (seriously where does she hide that thing?) and sensei was yelling out supposedly difficult questions to me. Kekeke. (A/N is that how Kaito laughs?) Why can't anyone take a joke? The lessons were too easy for me, and that made me want to liven things up. Which I often did. I tricked Aoko for the fourth time that morning, wishing that meitantei kun could see the mayhem I was causing. There were playing cards on the ceiling that announced 'Aoko is wearing white panties' and some of the equations on the board were peppered with playing cards. (The board looked like it'd been scratched by an angry cat, they hadn't bothered to replace it yet).
Suddenly, I get a text from jiichan, telling me to come to the blue parrot right now. I inwardly groaned. I hated it when he interrupted me, especially when I was in the middle of a show... I hadn't even gotten to the best pranks yet, but then, maybe it was best if I left now, I could see hakuBAKAs eye twitching, a sure sign he wasn't happy. I didn't want him to start accusing me of being kaitou kid again. I leap out of the usual window, leaving a book full of work behind. (I'd snuck into the school the night before and looked at the rest of the weeks lesson plan. Tch, how easy. I'd copied all the questions out, and finished the weeks work before school) after a gentle jog to the blue parrot, I entered, surprised to see both wolf chan and Arthur kun there too. Jiichan pointed to a chair by the window, a small dark skinned boy asleep in the sunlight.
"Don't ask, wolf chan dragged the kid in here about an hour ago. She won't let me do anything, just kept nosing my phone until I Messaged you boochama." I move closer to the dark skinned boy, curios at his appearance. He was wearing clothe far too big for him, and was drenched in sweat. I looked at wolf chan and crouched down, whispering my question in the clever animal's ear.
"That boy, same as shin~chan?" The white malamute nodded, looking at me pleadingly. I understood. It wouldnt do for the boy, who was now reminding me of someone, I couldn't quite remember who, to wake up and panic at being shrunken. I told jiichan not to worry, picking the dark skinned boy up and rushing back home, hiding the child away in the kid room until I could get shin~chan to confirm my suspicions. I leave a pair of child sized clothes on the floor next to him, knowing he'd want them when he woke up. I left Arthur kun and wolf chan to guard him, messaging shin~chan to meet the dogs at the train station. He replied he would come AFTER school, which gave me time to go back to school and continue to prank everyone. Or maybe I could actually behave for once, that would scare them! Kekeke.
It was the end of lunch when I got back to school, so I went and sat down in my seat. I had to resist temptation, hakuBAKA had gotten the dye out of his hair, and everyone looked normal again. I wanted to throw some magic tricks about, I was already bored! I resisted, hiding behind my poker face. The rest of the class came in, doing a double take as they saw me sitting calmly in my seat. I heard whispers as the others discussed what I was up to.
Narrators POV:
The students in Kuroba kaito's class were nervous. The infamous prankster had vanished much to their relief earlier in the morning, but had reappeared in his seat after lunch, no usual pranks. He just sat there and it freaked them out. What on earth was he up to? Aoko was particularly nervous, she'd only seen him like this once before, when Kuroba toichi (his father) had passed away in an accident. She was on edge. The whole class were. They knew, without a doubt, he was storing energy, a loaded gun, liable to go off any second.
Hakuba was also nervous. He kept glancing at the clock. Half the lesson passed, Kuroba just sitting there, doing something scarily out of character for him. He was behaving. The sensei also noticed, and was constantly glancing at him. Either her worse behaved student was unwell, or he was about to pull the worst trick yet. The whole lesson passed, without incident. The class by this time were mostly shaking with nerves, afraid of what the silent magician could be planning.
By the middle of the last lesson, both Aoko and hakuba couldn't take it anymore, and confronted the still silent magician.
"BAKAito!"
"Kuroba kun!"
He didn't even flinch, which made them even more nervous. The teen's famous poker face hid what he was thinking, so they were none the wiser. Someone's phone went off, and the class clown moved hurriedly, making both Aoko and hakuba jump back, hakuba falling over a desk in the process. Kaito answered his phone cheerfully.
"Moshi moshi? Ah, shin~chan! Hai, I'm on my way home now, school hasn't finished yet, but not like it's ever stopped me before." Hakuba narrows his eyes, the half Brit glaring at the suspected jewel thief.
"Oi, Kuroba kun, was that..." the half British detective lowers his voice so no one else can hear, "kudo shinichi?" The magician doesn't respond, his pokerface giving nothing away. Hakuba looked carefully at the other teen. Was that concern on his face, or was it his imagination. Kuroba hadn't pranked the class all afternoon, and that worried him.
Kaito's POV:
Sitting still, behaving and doing the tediously easy work all afternoon was driving me crazy, I wanted to throw a smoke pellet or something, anything! I was so bored. But the reaction from the rest of the class was priceless as the afternoon wore on, their nerves were fraying, two of the more nervous girls claimed to feel sick and left before last lesson. I grinned inwardly, not letting it show on my face.
Halfway through the last lesson, hakuBAKA and AHOko approached me, yelling at me simultaneously. I don't react, I can't. If I move, I'll thrown a smoke pellet or something. My apparent indifference seemed to put them further on edge, so when my phone rang and I answered hurriedly, they both leapt back, hakuBAKA falling over a desk as he did. I smiled, hurriedly hiding it behind my poker face.
"Moshi moshi?" I answer, hearing a familiar voice on the other end. Conan's voice. "Ah! Shin~chan! Hai I'm on my way home now, school hasn't finished yet, but not like it's ever stopped me before" I say cheerily. I hang up, hoping the chibi detective would understand and keep a look out for Wolf chan and Arthur kun. The annoying half Brit narrows his eyes at me, I expect him to accuse me of being kaitou kid again, but he says something even more annoying. A light is shining in his eyes, like he's figured out some amazing secret.
"Oi Kuroba kun was that..." he lowers his voice so the others can't hear, the excitement in his voice rising. "Kudo Shinichi?" I gather from the excitement the time obsessed detective was displaying that shin~chan was his idol or something. I keep a calm pokerface, and ignore him. I don't want to answer, in case HakuBAKA insists on meeting him. I don't think he'd take to kindly to meeting Conan. (If I remembered rightly, he'd met Conan back along at a murder case, but obviously didn't know his real identity.) I leave my class, everyone I pass shrinking away from me, imagining the worst. For once I didn't prank anyone, I was in too much of a hurry to get home, though I wanted to run, I also wanted to scare them by appearing out of character, so I decided to walk out slowly.
I walked home, well, I walked until I was out of sight, then I ran as fast as I could. I made it home just as Arthur kun came careering into the door. I sighed. despite my best efforts, the young greyhound hadn't learnt how to use doors yet.
If Arthur kun was here, then Wolf chan wouldn't be far behind, probably with shin~chan in tow. I grinned to myself, I couldn't wait to see his reaction. I knew it was terrible another person'd been affected by that apoptoxin drug, but I was just glad the boy was still alive. I set about making a pot of coffee for my greatest critic, and a hot chocolate for me. Coffee was too bitter for me. I liked my drinks and food sweet.
It wasn't long before Wolf chan came home.....
