30: the heist/ reunion

Shinichi's POV:

I can't keep the grin off my face. It's been a few weeks since Kaito, Hattori, Haibara and Mitsuhiko helped bring down the Boss and Gin, and today is finally the day. Not only have I been discharged from hospital this morning, kuroba chikage is walking up my garden path, a nervous expression on her face. Kai is stood next to me in the living room, a hand on my shoulder, his nails digging into my skin through my shirt.

Narrators POV:

Kuroba chikage was, to be quite honest, nervous. She knew the kudo family, having met Yukiko-chan several time when her late husband had tutored her for a summer, but the letter she'd received had unnerved her a bit. They had some important news for her that couldn't be mentioned over the phone. She knew their son, Shinichi, had made it his personal mission to bring down Kaitou Kid, like his father, but latching Kaito was impossible. Even she, his own mother, had a hard time tracking him. Nothing, absolutely nothing could have prepared her for what she was about to learn.

The magician, once known as the phantom lady, the woman with 20 faces, thought she was prepared for anything the kudo's could throw her way. Everything from Kaito being arrested to him being killed had crossed her mind. But not this. Not in a thousand lifetimes could she have prepared for this. She was stood, speechless, as she stared at the group of people before her. The two dogs and multitude of doves she'd been expecting. But not e people.

"Hey, kaa-San." Kaito greeted nervously, well aware that he was wearing the full Kid costume in a house owned by two generations of detective nuts. That wasn't what chikage was speechless about though. Sat next to her son was an almost perfect replica of him, save for the neat hair and dull eyes. Behind them, on the back of the sofa, two cats sat like statues, only their eyes moving. But, even the unnervingly still cats didn't bother her. It was the man stood behind them that left the usually chatty woman mute. She didn't have the words. She was in shock, she was frozen to the floor.

"A...a....a...." chikage stuttered, trying to get past the first syllable, but failing. Kaito's eyes sparkled with joy and love as the man stood behind them did a neat front flip over them, walking on silent feet over to his mother. He didn't say anything, but pulled her into a strong embrace, the woman suddenly bursting into tears of shock and joy. She mumbled over and over how much she missed him, as her husband picked her up and sat down with her on his lap, a silent thank you hanging in the air.

When chikage was calm, she turned on her son and his friend. She assumed this was kudo Shinichi, because he was too young to be any other member of the family.

"How? How did you?" She didn't get far, before the teenage detective cut her off with a shake of the head. Kaito laughed at her.

"I was shot off the roof of a building whilst chasing your son here" he told her, gesturing to Kaito, "he managed to save me, and we kind of ended up working together. He helped me hide, I helped him escape. My otousan saw me and Kaito one evening, and told me what he did back at that so called accident. I didn't tell Kaito, because toiichi-San wanted to tell you both himself." The detective reveals, leaving out most of the information, making the explanation as short as possible.

Toiichi smiles as his son suddenly changes into civilian clothes, a cheeky, dangerous look in his eye. He knew that look all too well, and to be honest, he wasn't at all surprised when the study doors burst open and several animal burst out, seemingly of their own accord. One hawk, two parrots, three cats and four dogs. He recognised all of them from vermouth's secret menagerie. Kaito laughed at his mothers face.

"Don't worry okaa-San, we're not keeping them. The hawk is going to Hakuba-no-yarõ and the three kittens are going to tantei-kun's friends, tsubaraya-kun, yoshida-chan and Kojima-kun. Aoko' always wanted a pet, and shin~chan's managed to convince him to take on the two parrots, and the dogs are going to the local police as service dogs." Kaito assured his mother, as she foresaw how crowded her home would be with so many animals.

"You forgot the two cats behind you Kaito." She told her son, already knowing the answer.

"They belong to Kaito. Like wolf-chan and Arthur-kun, Amber-chan and sliver-kun are trained to help him in heists." The older magician tells his wife, smiling at her mischievous face.

"I've already told Kai he can keep the dogs and cats here. If they're sighted at a future heist, we don't want Nakamori Keibu finally figuring out the link between his neighbours and Kaitou Kid." Shinichi adds, making both adults stare as he turns to his boyfriend and pulls him into a hug. Kaito kisses his detective on the forehead, a slight blush on his face. His family wasn't exactly normal, what with all three of them being internationally wanted criminals, but how were they going to take the new of him being well.... gay?

"Why am I not surprised?" Toiichi groaned in mock despair, chikage bursting out laughing and clapping her hands with an evil glint in her eye. The two cats chose that moment to move, draping themselves over a shoulder each, Amber on Shinichi's shoulder, silver on Kaito's.

The Kuroba couple and the two teens talk amongst themselves, catching up on everything about each other (Shinichi leaving out the whole conan thing) before leaving the house, chikage with the two parrots and the hawk, toiichi with the four dogs, and Shinichi and Kaito, both in their alternate identities, with the three kittens and their own pets for the house next door.

      AT THE MOURI DETECTIVE AGENCY

Ran looked at her father despairingly. Since the arrest of okino yoko, and the news that she was one of the biggest crime bosses in Japan, he had been depressed. Conan had supposedly gone to stay with his older brother for a few weeks, (Ran knew he was actually recovering from the incident that hospitalised him and was waiting for his body to recover before he changed again), and it had been relatively quiet, as no one wanted to hire a depressed and distracted detective. She was seriously considering calling Shinichi, though she knew he probably wouldn't answer, when someone knocked on the door.

"Yo, Ran!" The teen greeted, walking into the detective agency and promptly dodging a well aimed coffee mug. A young boy was following him, a cheeky look on his face.

"Shinichi! Conan-kun!" She smiled, her face changing to one of anger when her father threw another item from his desk, this time the stapler. She silently stalks up to him, a dangerous aura surrounding her that made both 'conan' and 'shinichi' shudder with fear. A good ten minutes later, ran was sat calmly in front of the two boys, a calm smile gracing her lips. Mouri Kogoro was upstairs in his room, sulking. Conan made a mental note to order a new office desk for her, as the current one was now in splinters around them.

"Ran, we need you're help. Can you call kazuha-neechan? Doyle would like to see her." Conan asks his friend, as Kaito shifts nervously in his seat, trying to flatten a tuft of hair that was stubbornly refusing to stay flat, despite the inordinate amount of hair gel.

"I'm not sure she'd come, she's too busy looking for him. She doesn't know, does she?" Ran replied, confused. 'Shinichi' was grinning, the grin ran was slowly becoming accustomed to. Kid's signature smirk.

"What if Kaitou Kid announced he was going to steal a world famous gem, and return something to her? Obviously, I won't make the second part of the heist note public. And of course, only conan here will be able to solve the whole thing."

"But I thought you'd found what you were looking for, Shinichi, so there's no need to go on anymore heists, right?" Ran said, a sudden silence descending upon them. All of them felt it, a presence that they all hoped was just their imagination.

.....

.....

"EEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shinichi kun is Kid sama?" A familiar voice screeched, before the person fainted dead away. A look of horror plastered Ran and Conan's faces, but Kaito, smoothing the tuft of hair back again, burst out laughing, he just couldn't help it. The idea was so ridiculous, but seriously, if he'd been a police officer, he'd have come to the same conclusion. Seriously though, who would suspect a nationally famous homicide detective of being an internationally wanted criminal?

"Ran, you might as well drag her into this, she's always wanted to meet Kai, right?" Conan said, hiding his amusement with such skill, even Kaito was fooled into thinking the young boy wasn't amused. Ran walked over to Sonoko and picked her up with practiced ease. She carried her best friend over to the sofa, where she waited patiently for the crazy girl to wake up. Sonoko eventually came round, and began firing questions at 'Shinichi-kun', in a way that demanded answers.

"You're kid-sama?!!"

"Kind of?" Kaito was bemused. He wasn't expecting to be cornered by this particular fan, and he was desperately looking for a way out. There were only three things in the world that frightened him. Aoko's magically appearing mop, fish, and Suzuki Sonoko. Eventually, ran shouted at her friend to shut it or else, which made Sonoko literally bite her tongue.

"Mou, Sonoko. He's not Shinichi, but how else was he supposed to approach me? He needs conan-kun's help, and I'm technically his legal guardian so he's asking permission." Ran told her friend firmly.

"Ran-neechan's right, Sonoko-neechan. Kid-nii isn't all bad. Exactly how many times have you saved me from being killed?" The boy turns to the disguised thief, whose poker face has slipped slightly.

"Thirteen, fourteen if you count that time you threw yourself off a rooftop." 'Shinichi' grinned cheekily, waiting for the inevitable retort.

"I did not throw myself, I was shot at and lost my balance. Which, might I add, was entirely your fault!" Conan argued back, playfully slapping the thief on the arm. Suddenly, both teen and child turn to Sonoko, speaking as one, almost as if they'd planned it.

"Can you help us? We need to be in Osaka, with the detective boys and Subaru San. That's where it's happening." Sonoko' face was priceless, she just couldn't register it. Kaitou Kid, her IDOL was asking for her help. Her help!

🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺TIME SKIP TO AFTER THE HEIST.🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊🐺🕊

Kazuha is sat in a small room, at the back of the police station, opposite an infuriatingly cheerful man in a white suit and top hat. The thief just kept grinning, listening to the chaos ensuing outside the small room. She'd snick in here in the hopes of getting some answers from the crazy thief, but he was mute, refusing to even sigh. She contemplated calling for one of the keiji-San outside, but she doubted anyone would answer her; it sounded like they were too busy with whatever traps kid had set for them.

A flash of grey smoke blinded her for a second, clearing almost as quickly as it had appeared. The thief was still there, but now he was free of his handcuffs, and two children were in the room. One of them she recognised instantly, the other seemed familiar, but she was sure she'd never seen him before. Conan-kun grinned at her, then handed the other boy a small container.

"Kazuha-neechan!" The boy greeted cheerfully, handing a dull white stone to the thief, who held the gem up to the moonlight.

"Not the one, tantei-kun." The thief grinned, handing the gem back to the boy.

"Kazuha-chan?" Ran asked, asks, as she comes into the room. "You might want to listen to these three. It's important." The karate expert said, sitting down in a free chair next to her friend.

"Do you remember me telling you Shinichi vanished, without a trace? That he only ever calls me now?" Ran asked, earning a nod from her friend. "Well, I found out something a while back, and I understand why Shinichi disappeared like he did."

"That criminal organisation right? Yeah tried to kill him?" Kazuha answered.

"Yes, and he wasn't the only victim. He got heiji-kun involved, and kaitou kid too. Or rather, they chose to get involved. Isn't that right, Shinichi?" Ran said, turning to the trio on the other side of the table. Kazuha expected Kid to reply, as he was the only one even remotely likely to be the detective, but to her surprise, Conan answered.

"Yes, that right ran. Don't look at me like that Kazuha-chan, we're not playing trick on you. Watch." Conan said, his usual childish self gone, a serious, calm demeanour replacing it. The boy shuddered slightly, and the osakan girl watched, speechless, as the young boy changed from seven, to seventeen. Kazuha just stared.

"It's hard to believe, isn't it? I've been stuck as a child ever since that day I disappeared. I hid my identity, lived with Ran and helped solve cases subtly, met Hattori, who figured out who I was the second time we met, and eventually took down the criminals that made me this way. The scientist who created the poison, against her will, created a temporary antidote, an accident gave me this weird, freaky ability of switching back and forth from Shinichi to Conan, and in a few months, a permanent antidote will be ready." The detective continued, before Kid joined in.

"I admit I got quite a fright when tantei-kun suddenly changed from boy to teen in my arms one heist when we were shot at." The thief turns to the other boy, who up to this point, had been silent. "Doyle-kun?"

"Ah! Sorry 'bout dis, Kazuha. I kinda got in da way and got poisoned, like kudo." Doyle said sheepishly, as Kazuha stared at him. It took a few minutes to sink in. Then...

"Wait. You're heiji? But... but.... heiji, I've been so worried!" She cries, tears sliding down her cheeks, as the western detective grabs a bottle of water and takes the pill from the container. Chaos still ensues outside the little room, the police so busy trying to escape the multitude of traps that they forget who set them and where he currently is.

"Kazuha-chan? We better get going. It takes twenty minutes for the temporary antidote to take effect, so unless you want the whole department finding out that heiji-kun is actually a seven year old, we have to get moving." Kid tells her, grabbing the mini teen under one arm and unpicking the lock with the other hand. (The door can only be opened without a key from one side.) they hurried out of the building, unhindered by anyone. Except Ran, who stayed behind to make sure her friends weren't followed too closely.

By the time they'd gotten somewhere safe (namely the back of toiichi's car) Doyle was in the first stages of the change, writhing in pain. He swore loudly, before cursing Haibara and pretty much everyone else for his agony.

"Hell, kudo, how..... how do you...." Hattori groaned, as another ripple of pain races through him. He couldn't finish his sentence, as he changed from boy to teen finally. The western detective was gasping for breath, a pained expression on his face. The driver suddenly made a sharp turn, throwing the passengers about. Luckily for Hattori, Kazuha was sat in the front, next to the driver, who was wearing a black version of Kid's outfit. Kid handed him a pair of beige jeans, a black t-shirt, and an orange men's blouse. The teen was currently in his birthday suit, but the fabric screen between the front and back of the car prevented Kazuha from seeing anything.

"Arigato." Hattori thanked, guessing these were probably clothes stolen from his own home by kid or his accomplices. The screen separating the front and back of the car slid down, revealing Kazuha's worried face. It took her a moment to register the sight before her, but she burst into tears once she did. She tried to reach out to him, but both the driver and the seats were in the way. The car swerved dangerously as Kazuha accidentally knocked the drivers arm.

"Hattori-kun, control your girlfriend!" The driver exclaimed, regaining control of the car and pulling up a few streets away from hattori's home. The girl looked at the driver curiously. She recognised that voice, from the few times she had spoken to the thief. But he was sat in the back of the car. Wasn't he?

"She can't control him any more than I can control mine" the same voice retorted, this time coming from the back of the car.

"Hey, I'm not a girl!" Kazuha chuckled and settled back in her seat. Luckily for Shinichi and Kaito, she hadn't registered what the two teens had said properly. Hattori on the other hand, snickered. He would have some fun winding kudo up about being called a girl.

"Ok, I'll see you later, kid-kun." The driver said, in the same voice as the thief, as they all got out of the car. Once the car had driven away, Kazuha turned to heiji and kudo-kun, ignoring the thief, who was currently stood in the shadows of a building, partially hiding his glaring white costume. She demanded to know what they knew about the thief, she wanted to know what they were hiding from her, and why heiji had snickered at kudo kun for no reason.

"We'll tell ya later Kazuha. We only 'ave a few hours 'till da antidote wears off. I wanna at least let da old man know I ain't gonna be 'is next homicide case." It shouldn't be funny, but Kazuha laughed at this. It was so much like him.

The four of them walked for a few minutes, until, much to Kazuha' surprise, kudo-kun stumbled, falling into her. Instead of saving himself, he just toppled right over, as if he'd passed out. That wasn't the shocking thing though. The shocking thing was that Kaitou Kid was cradling the detective in his arms moments later, picking up the stubborn teen in a bridal style hold when he insisted he was fine but clearly didn't have the strength to stand. They made it to heji's home without any further mishap, though kudo-kun complained most of the way. Hell, she had no idea that the famous eastern detective was as much of a child as heiji....
