27: Bourbon

A/N: hey Cubs. Just wanted to say arigato for sticking with me for so long. I'd just like to thank @Kaito_heiji for the inspiration. The idea will appear soon. But probably not this chapter.

Previously:
"How... how long has it been? They didn't tell me, just that I've been in a coma." Amuro-San asks, worry etched onto his face....

Narrator's POV:

The blonde NPA officer looks expectantly at the three teens and the young boy before him. He was in a lot of pain, and his memory of the accident was hazy, but he clearly remembered seeing Kudo Shinichi shrink into Edogawa Conan, something he had laughed at vermouth about, telling her she was crazy to think like that. Conan-kun suddenly spoke up, the others looking curiously at the young boy. Or was it mini teen?

"I'm so sorry. I... can't believe.... I'm glad you're feeling better Amuro-San." He rambled, a scared look on his face. The boy suddenly freezes. He's sat on the edge of the bed, but something seems off. He doesn't think, he just turns on the bed, producing a pen from somewhere (a trick he'd learnt from kid). Hakuba, Ran and Kuroba looked at the boy with curiosity as he stabbed the pen into the bedsheets, so close to Amuro-san's leg that it was touching him. Amuro looked down at his left leg in surprise. How had he not noticed that?

"Tante~kun? Why'd you do that?" Kid asked conan curiously. The mini detective doesn't answer, just stares in horrified silence as the memory flashes before his eyes clear as day.

Flashback. (Narrators POV)

Bourbon, rye, and the detective of the east. Three supposedly dead men. The few remaining members in the building had them cornered. Rei was running low on bullets, as was akai, but the teen detective still had plenty of ammunition. The detective didn't believe in killing anyone, if at all possible, but they were forcing his hand. The three of them wait patiently, looking for a chance to break free. A brief moment, so fleeting that a normal person would miss it, showed itself, allowing the silver bullet, the teen and the traitor to slip past the small crowd surrounding them.

All three, struggling to battle with such limited weaponry, managed to evade serious injury. At least until they got to the entrance. Both akai and Shinichi sensed it, the gaze of someone with malicious intent looking their way, but Rei didn't, only realising the danger when he was tackled to the ground by his former enemy, akai. Shinichi was now separated from the other two, vulnerable and half exposed. The teen saw a shadow move slightly. Most people would have missed it, but not the keen eyed detective. If he called out a warning, he risked getting one of his few allies killed, so he did the only thing he could; take aim at the shadow, and fire.

It happened so fast, no one really knew how it happened, only that chianti was dead behind rei and akai, and akai was holding onto an unconscious rei, who was bleeding heavily from two injuries. One was clearly from the assassin's weapon, but the other, to the horror of the detective, who had, so far, been a perfect shot, was from the weapon Shinichi had in his hand. For the first time, Shinichi had missed his target. But how?....

(Flashback ends)

"Hoi, Conan-Kun, Conan-Kun! Daijoubu?" Ran's hand shaking his shoulder brought the young detective back to his senses, a distant look still in his eye. This... this was his fault. He had done this. The young boy broke down at this point, guilt flooding his heart.

"Gomenasai, gomenasai, gomenasai!" He sobbed, tears tricking down his face. Kid moved to comfort Conan, but Ran was there first. She had no idea why Shinichi was apologising, nor did Kid and Hakuba for that matter, but all three of the gathered it had something to do with the takedown of that criminal organisation, by the way the blonde was treating the boy. Not as a young child, but a highly skilled detective.

"Yeah, it wasn't your fault, Conan-kun. It was just an accident." Amuro-San told the distraught shrunken teen, earning another shuddering sob.

"But I was... was the one... the reason...." he argued, barely able to get the words out past the crying. Hakuba asked Amuro-San what 'Conan-kun' was on about, only for ran to shoot him a furious glare that silenced everyone, conan-kun included.

"Why is Kaitou Kid her exactly? I'm aware that Hakuba-kun and Conan-kun are part of the team of detectives after him." Amuro-San asked suddenly.

"Do you remember Sherry-oneesan that you blew up in the train carriage?" Conan asked in a frighteningly cheerful voice, kid shuddering at the memory. Amuro-San nodded.

"That was Kid. I blackmailed him." The mini detective declared proudly. Hakuba nearly laughed. It was ridiculous. How could one blackmail someone so elusive as to be called a ghost? A phantom? Ran was confused. She remembered being on board that train, the bell tree express mystery train, when the end carriage was detached and destroyed. People had blamed kid for the explosion at the time. She had no idea that Shinichi had been in the thick of it... but then again, it had become clear to Ran that Shinichi was even better at staying under the radar than Kaitou Kid, who apparently lived next door to Nakamori keibu (something she had learnt after throwing a few of her less aggressive karate moves his way.).

"Please don't rub it in tantei-kun." The magician asked in his irritatingly polite voice. Hakuba thought he detected a veiled threat in kuroba's tone, but he wasn't sure.

"Ran-neechan? Hakuba-niisan? Kid-nii? Can you leave us alone for a bit? Onegai?" Conan asks sweetly, flicking a worried glance at the door, which Hakuba and ran failed to notice, but Kid did not. The magician suddenly vanished, changing his appearance back into that of the high school detective Kudo Shinichi. The three teens left, leaving Conan alone with the undercover officer. Hakuba glanced at his irritating acquaintance, startled when the magician struck up a conversation about Sherlock Holmes, with a similar enthusiasm to Kudo-kun himself. If he didn't know that the boy before him was not Kudo Shinichi, he would have been completely fooled.

Back in the room, Conan was looking curiously at the medical notes, wondering two things. How had they not noticed what he had, and why had the doctor been negligent enough to leave sensitive information concerning two separate patients in a room basically full of teenagers? Amuro-San cleared his throat, getting the mini-teen's attention.

"Do you really blame yourself? I mean, no one really knows what happened. I certainly don't." The blonde grins awkwardly, as the young detective shakes his head.

"What do you remember?" Conan asked, glad bourbon was treating him like an adult and not a brat like he usually did in these sorts of situations.

"You.... I mean Kudo-kun, firing at something, then a noise of someone falling behind me, then a pain in my back. Then nothing, until a few days ago when Akai Shuuichi was here." The blonde explained, telling the truth.

"Akai-San told me he heard two gunshots, but he couldn't tell which hit first, because they were fired at roughly the same time." The young detective paused, a look of guilt on his bespectacled face. "I'm sorry about... your condition. Oh, I think you should know.... Kid, myself, Hattori heiji, Hakuba-niisan and a few friends of ours are planning on taking on Gin and Boss next week. Vermouth's agreed to help us." Bourbon's face split into a wide grin.

"So she really was a...."

"Yes, and I've only managed to get this far with her help. Did you know she was trained in disguises by Kaitou Kid?"

"But isn't Kid a bit young? He wasn't on the list of APTX victims." Conan grins at this and laughs.

"Yeah, but neither was Sherry and Kid's assistant." Bourbon stares at the child curiously. "Oh, sorry, you wouldn't know. Sherry found out what they were using her drug for, so she tried to... escape with her own poison. A friend of mine found her outside my house the day after in the pouring rain." Bourbon (Amuro-San) glanced at the clock. Visiting time would end soon. Conan explained more about various topics, answering some of bourbon's questions, and evading others with an ease that would make his boyfriend jealous.

Wolf's POV:

Master Kaito and master Shinichi are back home now. Hakuba-San has gone home with Watson and Ran-San is next door with Agasa Hakase and the detective boys, who I could hear even from the refuge of the spare room in master Shinichi's house. Arthur is turning dizzying circles around us, master Kaito laughing his head off at master Shinichi, who has fallen for a blatantly obvious trap I'd set up in the hallway while they were out.

Food has been set down for me and Arthur-kun, but I don't eat it, because I went with akai SAN earlier when the masters were out, stealing that scowling man's lunch from under his nose. I think his name was camel. I was wagging my tail with nerves, tomorrow would either kill us, or make the masters very famous. And probably unpopular....

Shinichi's / Conan's POV:

How can one dog manage to set up such a complicated trap? I couldn't even see it, until I was caught. I struggle a bit, unable to move much, until I realise that Wolf-chan must have created this without considering Conan. I scowled at Kai, changing to Conan, taking a deep breath before punching Kai in annoyance. We head over to the sofa, sitting next to each other, me as Conan, him in his regular clothes. Kai's arm is around me, and we're both enjoying some relative peace. The dogs and doves were scattered around the house.

Tomorrow, Hattori (as Doyle), Kai, Hakuba, Ran, Myself (as conan), akai-San (as Subaru)and Sonoko (heaven forbid) were going to speak to Megure keibu and Tagaki keiji, though neither Megure keibu or Sonoko knew what about yet. Tomorrow didn't matter yet though. I had a whole evening of Kai to myself, something I wanted to enjoy. Kai wraps his arms around my small body, lifting me so I'm sat on his lap. I bury my head in his chest, happy to just be with him.

"You know, as shin~chan, you're just hot, but at tantei-kun you're plain cute, like a sweet little brother." Kai chuckles, ruffling my hair fondly. We just sit, enjoying each others company, until Arthur-kun rudely interrupts us by launching himself onto the sofa, knocking both of us off.

We get up, neatening our clothes and sitting back on the sofa. I want to kiss Kai, but I'd feel awkward kissing him as conan, so I switch into my teen self, just as I hear a loud exclamation at the front door.

"Conan-kun" oh, kami-sama, why do those brats choose the worst possible moments?

"Minna, Conan isn't here." Subaru SAN tells them, appearing from goodness knows where. Had he been here the entire time? "Kudo-kun? Kuroba-kun?" He turns, seeing us both stood behind him, the detective boys (minus Haibara and Doyle) screaming happily.

"You're Shinichi San and his friend, aren't you?" Genta asks. I roll my eyes and nod. (Grateful for Kai's sleight of hand as he stole the glasses still perched on my face.)

"Conan-kun is always talking about you, Shinichi-San! Is it true you like ran oneesan?" Ayumi asks cheerfully, looking disappointed when I firmly deny this. Haibara is just glaring at me, Doyle-kun making a fuss of Arthur-kun, and Mitsuhiko, who is at the head of the group as usual, is unusually silent, a sad smile on his face. I crouch down, so I'm face to face with my friend, not that he knows I'm conan, and ask him what's wrong.

"Daijoubu, Mitsuhiko kun?" A sharp look, one he probably got off of me, crossed his face.

"Yeah. Not really. Can I ask you something Shinichi Niisan?"

"Sure." What did he want to ask? Was it about 'conan' or my detective work, or something else entirely?

"Not in front of the others though. Onegai?" The young boy looked up at me, clearly nervous........
