26: planning with her.
Narrators POV:
The elderly woman shuffled up the drive, escorted by a bristling angry wolf-chan and a snarling Arthur kun. Shinichi was waiting at the door for her, letting her in. Kaito was in his KID costume, perched cross legged about two foot in the air above the coffee table somehow. Shinichi had invited the woman over, after a heated argument with both Haibara and Kaito, who were of the opinion that this particular lady was pure evil. Hakuba was sat on the sofa, a cup of tea in one hand and Watson on his shoulder. Doyle and Haibara were in the kitchen with Subaru San making biscuits.
The elderly lady took a seat opposite Hakuba, glancing at the gaudy magician only briefly before ignoring him. She remover her disguise and shook her hair to make it feel less heavy. Hakuba was silent, shock on his face as the woman changed from a decrepit old woman to a young lady in her late twenties. Chris vineyard. Kid glares at her as she turns to him.
"You're not toiichi sensei, are you? You're too young. And Any way, snake acted against orders and had him killed." She commented in a backhanded sort of way, earning a dangerous smile from the magician, who was still perched in his seat, two foot in the air. The two dogs rushed into the kitchen as the two children helped get the biscuits out of the oven. Shinichi sits down next to Hakuba, a generous space between them because apparently sitting next to a gay detective, even a taken one, made Hakuba feel uncomfortable. (That's what he said anyway, he actually suspected that Kudo and Kuroba had switched places as a joke.)
There was a risk of the detective boys barging in on the meeting to see Conan kun, Subaru san and the dogs, but ran had minimised that risk by taking them to tropical land to see a new Kamen yaiba show they had there. Once everyone was seated, Shinichi explained everything. Starting with why vermouth was there. They spent a fair amount of time discussing everything, plotting, planning and scheming, then plotting some more. The two dogs, much to vermouth's and Hakuba's surprise, provided a constant stream of refreshments, the brindle greyhound carrying paper bags with biscuits, fruit and the like to everyone, and the white malamute like one handing out hot and cold drinks, Doyle drinking insane amounts of apple juice.
By the time it started to get dark, the whole thing was planned out, vermouth leaving, Kaito, still disguised as kid, clearing up the bugs she left behind and destroying them, before Shinichi explained why Doyle kun and ai chan were there too. By this point, Hakuba had already figured out who Doyle was, just by his accent and hostile reaction to him. Haibara introduced herself as the woman who'd caused so much suffering for Doyle and Conan, taking a 12hour antidote to show Hakuba her real appearance, promising to show him some of her research when he expressed interest in her progress on a permanent antidote, and Doyle sulking like the little kid he looked like because he wasn't allowed to take an antidote as he was "far too hotheaded and immature" (Haibara ai's words.).
Hakuba wasn't too pleased with having to work with Hattori, but Haibara, much to Shinichi and Kaito's shock, smiled warmly at him and offered to show him all her research notes if he cooperated. Watson, perched on Hakuba's shoulder the whole time, chose that moment to stretch his wings and attack one of the doves, which had somehow gotten out of the library/study. The bird was yuki chan, the best of Kaito's doves. It's frightened coos turned to panicked shrieks as Watson finally cornered it, talons stretched out to attack.
"Leave. My. Friend. Alone." Wolf chan barked furiously, though no one but Arthur and the hawk understood. It was clear that she was protecting the smaller bird though, when she leapt forward and grabbed Watson in her teeth, seemingly in a viscous manner. By this time, Hakuba and Kaito were yelling at one another, angry that their 'pets' were trying to kill each other. (Wolf chan/Watson is my friend, not a pet!)Haibara glared at them and told them in a terrifyingly calm voice to shut up. Wolf chan dropped the struggling hawk into Hakuba's hands on shinichi's command, the hawk seemingly unharmed. The dove was lying on the floor, seemingly dead, but Arthur nosed the bird gently, and it fluttered up onto Kaito's head, where it ruffled its feathers and preened.
Hakuba stayed the night, sleeping in the spare room, for two reasons. One, it was getting late, and two, Haibara, or rather, 'shiho-chan' had asked, and the half Brit couldn't find it within his heart to say no to such a 'kindhearted girl'. Shinichi and Kaito (obviously) shared shinichi's room, and Haibara and Doyle went back to their rooms next door. Wolf chan, Arthur kun and Watson were left loose, the doves safely tucked away in the library with the window open if they wanted it.

Wolf's POV:
The humans all went to bed, though I don't think Hakuba slept much, by the noise he was making tossing about like that. Watson was perched on the back of an armchair, within our reach, but Arthur-kun was already settling down like the humans and couldn't be bothered to chase him. The hawk surprised me in a way, because he was within his rights to attack me for stealing his prey.
"You..... dogs....." a voice said, making me look about. The hawk was the only one awake, and the voice certainly wasn't human. I looked at Watson, tilting my head. Did he just speak?
"You dogs...... like him? ....That thief?" The hawk spoke slowly, each word carefully spoken.
"Watson?" I whined quietly. "I didn't know you could understand us." The hawk tilts his head, clicking his beak in annoyance.
"Of... course. You.... can speak... to that... thief, right?...... how?" He asked me, Arthur-kun snoring softly as the younger dog slept. "I... want to....tell my......friend that... I can....understand...... him. He says..... some weird.... things though. .....even for a ....young human." I chuff quietly at the hawk. Hakuba-no-yãro was a teenage detective, he solved crimes. Just like Tanti-Han and master Shinichi. Of course he'd be weird.
"But I thought you were a British hawk. How do you understand Japanese animals?" I asked curiously, still in my soft whining voice.
"My friend..... speaks both..... languages to........ me. I know....... both." He explained, clicking his beak as he whistled out the words. (A/N: for those that don't know, Watson is a Harris hawk and they can whistle. I know, I used to look after two.) I pricked my ears suddenly, as a soft footfall upstairs made me stiffen. Apparently Hakuba no yãro can't sleep. Because it's his soft footfall I can hear.
Moments later he appears in the dining room, a tired expression on his face. He looks at me, glares, and holds his arm out for Watson. The hawk flies over to the boy's arm, landing softly. Watson rubs his head against the blond detective's cheek, making an affectionate whistling sound. Hakuba sits in a chair and begins to talk to the bird, ignoring me as I get up, hopping over to master Kaito's tablet and turning it on. I wanted to talk to Hakuba kun. I type out the questions, then show him.
Hakuba kun. You do realise Watson kun understands. Right?
I just thought you'd like to know. He calls you friend.
Hakuba kun read the message, and stares at me for a minute. It's like he's in shock.
"Wait, so you're saying you and Arthur aren't the only human minded animals? I thought you were failed experiments?" He asked in a whisper, though I doubt he'd be able to wake up the two masters, they could sleep through anything. (Except police sirens and panicked screams.) I nod, my ears bolt upright. Watson shrieks and clicks his beak.
He's loyal to you. If you ask him to do something,
He will do it. Watson is clever, like you, like master
Kaito and master Shinichi. Watson is above average,
But he's still a normal hawk. He gets angry a lot
Because he can't talk to you. He's a good bird, for a
Detectives pet.
I type, watching the detective's reaction as he reads it. He blinks, clearly tired as it's gone midnight, yawns and mutters something about this being a dream and wanders back to bed, Watson still on his shoulder. I huff with annoyance and curl up next to Arthur-kun, burying my nose in my tail as I sulk. Humans, even hyper intelligent ones, were so stupid sometimes.

Kaito's POV:
I yawn and stretch, blinking sleepily as I wake up. Shin~chan's arms are wrapped around my waist, his head buried in my back. He's still a teenager, thank goodness, but he's still asleep. I'm about to wake him up when he starts talking. Kami-sama he's so adorable when he does that. His voice is muffled, but the words are clear enough. I felt a chill down my spine. What the hell was he dreaming about?
"What's it like to die? You tell me. You're organisation killed me, I'm just returning the favour." He mumbled, muttering some incoherent rubbish after that. I didn't move, afraid to wake my detective up now. What was he dreaming about? His voice sounded so... void of emotion, like he didn't care. What was going on in his messed up mind? (Yeah, yeah, I'm a fine one to talk ne?)
I just lie there, waiting for shin~chan to wake up so I can go prank Hakuba no yãro. Several quiet minutes pass, before shin~chan jumps violently. Is he still asleep? He pushes himself away from me, flinging himself off the bed and hitting his head on the wooden bed frame as he falls. He can't still be asleep. Right?
"Urgh, wha... ah le? Why am I on the floor?" Oh shin~chan, so clueless when you're half asleep. He climbs back onto the bed, is he even aware I'm still there? He's got this carefully blank expression on his face, a well crafted poker face. He sits up, rubbing his face with his left hand.
"Morning Kai..." he mumbles, as I sit up and hug the sleepy detective. He seems a little distracted, even more so than usual. He's holding onto me tightly, which I don't mind, but seriously, if I didn't get up soon, Hakuba no yãro would get up before I could set some tricks up. I push him away softly, noticing a single tear slide down his cheek. I move my right hand up to brush the tear away.
"Shin~chan? Daijoubu?" I ask, knowing perfectly well he was still hiding something from me. He shakes his head, muttering about it being just a bad dream, and gets out of bed, throwing some rather crumpled clothes on. I shrug. Much as I wanted to know what had given him such a fright, (and contrary to common belief) I respected his privacy, and if he wasn't willing to talk about it, then I wasn't going to force the matter.
We both head downstairs, Hakuba already up and apparently on his second cup of coffee as he stares at something on my tablet. Shin~chan smiles to himself. Ok, what the hell has he noticed, that I apparently haven't? He nudges me, and points to Wolf~chan, who's sat in front of Hakuba wagging her tail.
"I take it you want a hot chocolate?" He asks, heading over to the kitchen, where he starts making his usual morning coffee. I turn to Hakuba, who jumps violently when I tap him on the shoulder. He glares at me, is he trying to figure out if I'm shin~chan or not?
"Kuroba, what do you want?" He asks, turning back to the message on my tablet. It was one of wolf~chan's messages. I lean over him to read it.
"I wouldn't Kaito, besides, it's something both of us have already figured out. Judging from Hakuba-kun's face, it's about that hawk of his. It's not normal, is it?"
"Yeah, but unlike your two accomplices Kuroba, he's naturally intelligent." I glare at him. Shin~chan interrupts, handing me a cup of hot chocolate, taking a sip of his own drink at the same time. He's unusually pale, even for him. He pulls out his mobile and glances at a message, going even paler, if that was possible. It's getting to serious in here, so I throw my now empty cup in the air, and catch it, now full again. Hakuba just stares at me, or rather, at my cup. Shin~chan glad at me.
"Subaru-San just messaged me. We're going to beika General. Hurry up and get ready." He stated, a scared look flashing across his face, before being replaced by his poker face again. Hakuba was already washed and dressed, so I hurried and washed, throwing on a pair of shin~chan's trousers and one of his navy blue shirts. By the time I'd done that, shin chan was already out of the shower and grabbing his own clean set of clothes. I grab him from behind, kissing his neck softly, making him relax slightly.
"Bows not the time Kai." He said softly, almost inaudibly. "We have to get to the hospital. You'll have to disguise as me, I'm going as Conan, because that's who Subaru-San asked for." He pushes me away gently and changes to Conan, his clothes changing with him. Had that little witch of a scientist altered all of his clothes?
Shinichi's POV:
I was concerned for my friend. Ever since that.... accident back in the takedown, he'd been stuck in a comatose state, showing no sign of improvement or deterioration. Akai-San had, despite being one of the man's most hated 'enemies', visited my friend every day, making sure no one, not even the remnants of the black organisation, could get to him. Before I left the house, I rang Ran on Conan's phone.
"Ran-neechan!"
"Ah! Conan-kun! What's wrong?" She asked me worriedly, picking up on my strained voice no doubt.
"It's amuro-San. He's been found. Shinichi-niichan will explain later, we're on our way to you now."
"Oh, okay. Is Hakuba-San still with you?" Now she knows I'm Shinichi, I'm not afraid to talk like an adult around her.
"Hai. We're all going to see him. You too. Ja ne, Ran-neechan." I say, hanging up. I grab my skateboard and race out of my house, leaving Hakuba and Kai to lock up.
I arrive at the detective agency in record time, having used the rocket skateboard hakase made for me to use as conan. Ran is already waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs. I smile at her, then frown as I hear Sonoko calling to us. Why does she have to choose the most inconvenient times to show up.
"Ran! Oi, Ran!" She turns to greet her best friend, smiling apologetically to me.
"Yo, Ran." Kai calls suddenly, having finally caught up with me. Sonoko suddenly stops rambling about whatever gossip she's spreading, to stare at Kai. He's smoothed his hair down, and his eyes are a much duller hue than usual. He looks just like me now. Ran of course knows it's not me, because I'm stood right there, as conan.
"Shinichi. Hakuba-San. What's wrong?" Kai pulled out 'shinichi's' phone, and glanced at the message akai-San sent me.
"I can't explain. Not in front of Sonoko, we have to hurry. Visiting time starts in ten minutes. I've known where amuro-San was for a while, I just couldn't tell you. But he's awake now. He's asked for you, me and Conan-kun to be his first visitors." He told her, ignoring sonoko as she tried to insist she should come too. Ran turns to Sonoko again.
"No Sonoko. I know Amuro-San's been missing for several weeks, but if Shinichi knew where he was and didn't say anything, then there has to be a good reason for that. If we all go, it might be suspicious. Amuro-San only asked for three of us." She told Sonoko firmly, before turning and walking towards the hospital. Hakuba and 'shinichi-niichan' followed. I gave Sonoko a cheeky look before following, as I heard an angry shriek behind me. Best lose them before they figured out I was involved in a 'case' again.
Narrator's POV:
(At beika general hospital) the doctor sighed with exasperation as the patient stubbornly glared at him. It was no small miracle for this particular patient to be glaring, since he'd been in a coma for several weeks. The medical bill had been paid for anonymously, in cash, with only a neat handwritten note with it. "For amuro-San, hontou gomenasai." No one had been able to trace the person, but as a result, amuro-San had been kept alive, despite the doctor's all thinking that he should have been taken off of life support a week ago.
"Listen sir. I'm aware that you're visitor isn't someone you're very fond of, but why refuse to speak to the police about your injuries?" He asked frustratedly, well aware that the young man in front of him probably didn't care. The blonde man lifted his head and looked over the doctor's shoulder, looking at the four people in the doorway.
"Excuse me, but I was told Amuro-San wanted to see us?" The young lady asked, the two teenaged boy nodding, as a young boy about seven years old rushed into the room. The stubborn glare that the doctor had been getting used to suddenly vanished, replaced by a wide, joyous smile. He turned, getting a better look at the three teenagers in the doorway. He recognised two of them instantly. Mouri Ran, the daughter of the nationally famous nemurino kogoro, and Kudo Shinichi, the famous high school detective of the east. It wasn't until the blonde teen spoke that he realised it was Hakuba Saguru the British high school detective.
One known nationally to always solve any case he took on, another known to be the one person the internationally wanted Kaitou Kid feared and a girl rumoured to be on par with her father in deductive capability. Three famous teens in one room. Being a fan of detectives, the doctor could barely control his excitement, and surprise, as the silent patient finally spoke.
"It's nice to see you again, Conan-kun, Mouri-San, Kudo-kun" the blonde man greeted, giving Conan a funny look as he realised that two people who shouldn't exist in the same room were... well, in the same room. The doctor, realising these kids were far better help than he could be with this particularly stubborn man, left the room, leaving the five of them alone.
"Im sorry amuro-San." Conan whispered, shocking the three teens as he sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Don't be. It wasn't you're fault. I take it he's kid then?" Amuro asks, pointing to Shinichi, who flinches and tries to hide his surprise.
"Kid, he knows. Everyone in this room knows who I am now." The mini detective states, smiling as kid changed into his kid outfit in a puff of smoke.
"How... how long has it been? They didn't tell me, just that I've been in a coma." Amuro-San asks, worry etched onto his face....
