25: remembering That Night.
"Shin~chan?" Kaito's voice is soft, laced with worry. I don't reply, because another jolt of pain tears through me.
Shinichi's POV:
We both lay on the bed, me clutching my chest in agony and kai clearly bewildered and scared. I'm hurt, Kai knows it, goodness knows what my kindhearted boyfriend is thinking. I gasp quietly as my body reverts back to Conan, Kai looking at me as I do, clearly upset.
"Shin~chan?" He asks me with concern. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..." I can't answer, I feel ill, but I pull Kai closer, ignoring the fact that I now appear to be seven, kissing him with gentle passion on the lips. I see the worry in his gentle expression, his love and concern for me clear on his face. A wave of nausea washes over me, and the last thing I see is Kai's soft eyes clouding with concern.
I dream. Or rather, I remember. I've tried so hard to suppress these memories, the vivid emotions racing uncontrolled through me.
Narrators POV:
Flashback.
The teenage detective of the east is flanked by two FBI agents, a CIA agent, and a Japanese NPA officer. The four other people are all older than him, the youngest being eleven years his senior. The CIA and the Japanese NPA officer had almost questioned the sanity of the FBI. Almost. They saw the incredible skill of the boy, hardly an adult, as he planned and plotted, outthinking and outmanoeuvring some of the most intelligent agents they had. The authorities had stormed the old building, making dozens of arrests with minimum casualties at first. Several higher ranking syndicate members barricaded themselves away, but the teen, predicting this would happen, had placed himself and his four most trusted allies in there with them, hidden from anyone's view....
A bullet flies past the detectives face, grazing it. He doesn't flinch, not a single twitch. A frightening grin appears on his face, each word carefully spoken to produce maximum effect.
"You can't kill someone who's already dead. You murdered me, Kudo Shinichi, a year ago. I've been waiting, waiting until you too could feel my pain. My loneliness." His voice is cold, hard like ice. His face is now void of emotion, startling the four adults he was with.........
Flashback ends.
Narrators POV:
Ran sat opposite her friend Sonoko at the small cafe, Sonoko eating absurd amounts of cakes in a small amount of time, whereas Ran half heartedly poked at her strawberry parfait. Sonoko, though certainly not the brightest of buttons, noticed her friend's behaviour and asked her a barrage of questions. Ran didn't reply right away, taking a nervous breath before pouring all her secret thoughts into one long monologue.
"Sonoko, I think I know where shinichi and heiji-kun are hiding, and I'm worried about them because I think the recent string of murders are because the killer is targeting Shinichi and heiji-kun is helping Shinichi to hide. Conan-kun went missing when Shinichi took down that syndicate and I think he helped Shinichi, because when he came back home then he was in shock and scared and tired for days and.. and...." Sonoko, who only managed to catch every fourth word or so, told Ran to calm down and talk in a more reasonable, slow voice. Ran took a deep breath and started from the beginning again.
"I think conan-kun was involved with that huge syndicate and it's takedown........ Shinichi called me one night to say Conan was with him and the Edogawa family, but that was the night Shinichi took the organisation down by helping Interpol and everyone. When Conan got home, he was in shock and quite withdrawn. I think he followed Shinichi and got caught up in something. Sonoko, I think Conan is hiding a frighteningly big secret, I think.... I'm sorry, I have to answer this." Ran pauses, picking up her phone and answering. In a way, she's thankful that the call interrupted her before she could say it. The familiar voice of Shinichi greets her, but before she can say anything, the boy on the other side of the call, speaks.
"Yo, Ran. No, I'm not Shinichi, its Kid. I need you here right now. It's up to you whether you bring the scary...I mean Suzuki San. I'm at the Kudo's"
"What's wrong?"
"Shin~chan. He's sick, poison. I...I... onegai, haiyaku!" Kid begs her. Ran excuses herself, and breaks into a steady run, heading to her best-friends house. Sonoko just shrugs her shoulders, guessing it had something to do with the ever absent Shinichi-kun or the currently missing conan-kun.

Conan's POV:
The memory-dream fades away, as I wake up, feeling dizzy. Kai is holding me in his arms, as I notice I'm still conan. Ran-neechan is sat next to us, a worried look on her face. Wolf-chan and Arthur kun are both curled up on the floor, and about twenty doves were fluttering about.
"Mou, Conan-kun. You had us worried! When Kuroba-Kun couldn't wake you, he called me." Ran explained, smiling when she saw my confused face as I realised she just called Kai by his real name. She turns to Kai and asks him politely to leave us alone for a bit. I bite back a grin as I see the dangerous look in Kai's eyes. A subtle flick of his wrist, barely noticeable, told me he'd planted a listening device as he left the room.
"R-R-Ran-neechan." I stutter. She couldn't be here. I couldn't risk her seeing me change back into a teen. I realise I'm wearing clothes, Kai must have dressed me when I was stuck in that dream. Ran places a gentle hand on my shoulder as I struggle to get away from her. A soft, almost sad smile graces her lips. I stop trying to get away, for two reasons. One, I know there's no point, she's much stronger than me as conan, thinking of that she stronger than me as Shinichi too, and two, she's pulling me into a hug.
"Conan-kun, Kuroba-kun told me everything." I freeze, not sure what to think. Kai surely didn't tell her that I'm Shinichi? Did he?
"Well, that's not really true. I forced him to, after telling him what I thought and throwing a few karate moves his way. You're Shinichi, aren't you?" She asks. or is it accuses? I'm about to think up a random excuse about 'Shinichi-niichan' but she stops me before I can speak. "Conan-kun, just listen. You look just like him without your glasses, you're scarily smart for a seven year old, I've seen you hit Otousan with a stun dart and use him as a puppet, Hattori-kun gets along well with you, yet he hates the detective boys despite them being almost as smart as you when you were that age, and you have amazing soccer skills and A frighteningly good memory. You're.... no, I'm not going to say that, not until you either confess to being Shinichi.... Kuroba-kun told me his identity after I told him my suspicions." She paused, looking at me expectantly. I was speechless. Ran had put a lot of thought into this. I think she realised this, as she continued to explain why she had deduced I was Shinichi.
"Also, the way you behave when Sonoko and I try and pair you with ai-chan and Ayumi-chan, it would be explained if you were actually ten years older than them, I've noticed you have similar habits to shinichi, in the way you talk to heiji-kun and agasa-hakase, the way you're ambidextrous too, and you share shinichi's birthday too. And the way Doyle speaks.... it reminds me of....."
"Ran. Stop. Onegai?" I cut her off, knowing I had no choice now. "What did Kai-nii tell you?" She shook her head.
"You are Shinichi, aren't you. You just called me ran, not ran- neechan. Kuroba-kun just told me that he caught you when you got shot off a building, and then ended up meeting Shinichi. He never said anything that could confirm or deny you being Shinichi." I sigh in defeat, and explain everything. From the day I was poisoned, until meeting Kaitou kid's alter ego. I left out the takedown of the black organisation, and Haibara's real identity, referring to her as sherry, the traitor. I also left out the fact that Doyle was really Hattori. She smiles softly, and I flinch as her hand moves towards my face.
"Shinichi, gomenasai. I.... i embarresed you so many times. The times I forced you, as conan, to take baths with me, that time when my towel slipped and you saw me.... well.... and... conan-kun? Is it alright to call you conan-kun?" She asked in a soft, sisterly voice. I nod, as conan, she was my big sister, as Shinichi, she was more a sister than a love interest. "Conan-kun, I know. I know you're in love with Kid. After all, I've known for a long time that you're gay. I'm sorry, for wanting to you to love me. I'm happy though, you're still my little brother. Ne?" I push her off of me, as she was still hugging me, and smile. I call out, telling Kai he can stop eavesdropping and come back in, and laugh as the magician comes in, a sheepish expression on his face. I focus myself, concentrating, trying to change back, and succeeding, wincing as my body changed back into a teen. Ran gasps.
"An accident with the temporary antidote enabled me to choose when I change back and forth, like some crazy werechild." I explained with a lopsided grin to Ran, as Kai pulls me into a soft hug. Ran frowns as Kai explains about his night job, and part of why he did it.
"So, Sonoko was right when she said there was a pattern to your thefts and a reason behind returning the gems?" He nods. Sonoko put that much thought into her reasoning? Maybe she was a bit brighter than I thought. My phone suddenly rings, loud and persistent. Wolf chan has it carefully between her teeth.
"Moshi moshi?"
"Conan-kun?" ......oh... I swore, something I rarely do. This was Conan's phone, and I'd answered as Shinichi.
"It's me, Hakuba. If it's a bad time....". Oh, thank you kami-sama. Hakuba knew I was Shinichi.
"Yeah, what's got you so excited Hakuba?"
"Tell Kuroba to stay at yours. Someone broke into the Kuroba residence last night and searched the place. It might be connected to...."
"The serial killer? Probably. All the victims fit the same description, same height and approximate weight, same hair colour and build. I'm.... I'm almost certain I know who their true target is though. Which is why both Shinichi and Conan are keeping out of it."
"Why would they target you?" I sigh and glare at the wall.
"... just come over tomorrow and I'll explain. I want you to meet a couple of friends of Conan's too. You'll like one and hate the other, oh and bring Watson."
"How do you know I'll hate one of these children?" He asks me in confusion. I laugh and tell him I'd see him at ten tomorrow before hanging up. Ran and Kai look at me curiously. I smile and change back to Conan, Arthur-kun and Wolf-chan wagging their tails. I explain what Hakuba wanted. Kai looks worried, even though I left out the appearance of more murder victims, I couldn't fool him, nor Ran for that matter.
Wolf's POV:
I heard every word Hakuba said in that phone call, as did Arthur kun. I was excited, because it meant telling Hakuba about the Haibara siblings, which would be fun. I wagged my tail happily, as Arthur spun dizzying circles. Despite looking like a puppy, the young dog had matured and was learning the human language well. He understood most Japanese words now, but he couldn't read. I left Ran-oneesan, master Kaito and master Shinichi in the bedroom talking. Arthur followed me as I raced out of the house and into the next house along.
Doyle was tying Haibara up with the phone cord, I could smell faint traces of that weird sleep dart all three chibified teens have hidden in their watches. Doyle stops what he's doing for a moment to look at us, a seriously childish look on the shrunken detectives face. I growled angrily, what on earth was heiji-San doing to shiho-San?
"Oh, wolf chan! Sorry bout dis, she was annoyin' me so I shut her up like she shut me up." He states in his heavy Osakan accent. I growl again, but Arthur is wagging his tail and spinning in dizzying circles. He never did like shiho-San. I sniff the air. Where is agasa hakase? Out, by the smell of things. I hadn't seen his bright yellow car either, come to think of it. I rush forward, snarling, hoping to frighten the mini western detective away from shiho San. It worked. He backed away slowly. Smart, he knew not to run from a natural hunter then.
I licked Haibara's face, until she woke up. Arthur reluctantly untangles the phone cord, untying the knots rather than chewing through them. Haibara-chan glares coldly at Doyle-kun and pats my head as I wag my tail. Haibara gets up from her chair, walks past Doyle-kun in a way that makes him flinch for no obvious reason, maybe it's just her presence? , and picks up a tablet from a shelf, handing it to me. I use my nose to type on the note's function, telling her what I'd heard just a moment ago next door. Once I'd finished typing, she read it aloud, so Doyle could hear it too:
Haibara ai and Doyle...
Shinichi San is meeting with hakuba tomorrow.
The Brit detective already knows about conan kun.
Shinichi San wants you to meet him. Both of you.
He wants Hakuba to know who you both really are,
If it's ok with you. If not, you will just be a friend of
Conan kun's who knows his secret. Ok?
Shiho-San sighs and, much to Doyle's surprise, she smiles. Doyle makes a run for it, afraid of her pleasant smile for some reason. Arthur-kun chases him and pins him down. Doyle is complaining loudly about 'annoying British idiots' and how Hakuba is a waste of space. I've no idea what Doyle knows about Hakuba, but he clearly dislikes him. Shiho-San pats me on my shoulder and I lie down so she can climb onto my back. Arthur-kun, being unusually big for a puppy, but still clearly a puppy, managed to drag Doyle by his hoodie out of the house literally kicking and screaming in a strong Osakan accent.
Ai-chan was clearly getting used to riding my broad back, because she wasn't really holding my fur anymore. Rather, she was sitting there, balancing much like she would on an animal like a horse. (I only found this out later, I'd never seen a horse before, I didn't even know what one was back then). Doyle was pinned down at the gates of the Kudo mansion, Arthur-kun perched upon his chest with a clear expression on his brindle face. Arthur was clearly pleased with himself and he said as much when Ai-chan leapt off my back to open the gate and door for us. Doyle refused to move, he looks like he's sulking. Was he like this as a seventeen year old, or had he gotten so into character that he'd forgotten he was more mature than this?
Haibara let's us in and leads the way up to master Shinichi's room, where Ran-San and master Kaito were talking with Conan-kun. They stop talking as the shrunken scientist walks in, conan-kun shrinking back against Ran-San as she glares at him. I'm wagging my tail nervously, Haibara-San always had that look on her face in master Kaito's presence.
"Kid, Edogawa-kun." She greets curtly, before turning to Ran-San and softening her face. "Ran-oneesan." This greeting was much softer and kinder than the rather abrupt way she spoke to the two boys. She clearly preferred Ran-San over master Kaito and master Shinichi. She ignores the boys as she speaks to Ran-San as if she's the only person in the room.
"Doyle-kun is downstairs, sulking. He's not very pleased about meeting with Hakuba-San, he doesn't like the British detective very much... Ran-oneechan I'd like to formally introduce myself. I don't think I have yet. Have I?" Ran-San shook her head and smiled softly at 'ai-chan'.
"My name is...." Haibara-San pauses as if she's going to lie.
Conan's POV:
"My name is Miyano Shiho, but Kudo-kun and KID know me as Sherry." I blinked in surprise. She was telling Ran the truth?
"Haibara...." I say in response, only to feel the deadly glare that she reserved specifically for me, hattori and hakase.
"I'm the reason Kudo-kun and Doyle-kun are the way they are. I didn't know they were using it as a poison. Not at first. When I found out about my drug's usage, I took one myself, hoping to end my imprisonment there. I shrunk, and so I fled to the one place where I had a chance of being understood. I altered their files first so they believe Kudo-kun died." Haibara explained, as Ran listened.
Ran moved over to Haibara and knelt down beside her. She whispered something in her ear, and then pulled her into a sisterly hug. Kai stepped back and vanished, at first I thought he was afraid of Haibara (wouldn't blame him) but then he reappeared with Doyle under one arm.
"Ran-San. I'd like you to meet the third member of the mini teens" he joked, dumping Doyle none to kindly onto the floor, as he childishly bit Kai's hand. Geez, hattori was acting even younger than his current physical age. How was he my friend again? Right, he was almost my intellectual equal, though he was more rash and easier to predict than I was. (Kai's words, not mine.)
Narrators POV:
Doyle sat on the floor with his arms and legs crossed, a grumpy expression on his face. He understood why Haibara-San refused to test the antidote on him, but still, why was she letting Kudo run around as his teen self if he wasn't allowed? It felt so unfair. He felt an unfamiliar hand on his shoulder, and was about to react when he heard the voice that came with it.
"Doyle-kun? So if Shinichi is conan-kun and Sherry is ai-chan, that must make you Hattori, ne?" She asked him, as he turned to see Mouri ran, a soft expression on her face. Wait... so she knew about Kudo then? Hattori glared at her before smiling.
"Yeah, but Kazuha doesn't know. Ok, Kudo, I thought you said not to...."
"I didn't, she figured it out for herself. And before you ask, yes, that's his real face." Doyle glares at kid, he'd seen the criminal's face before, but he still didn't know his name. Wait... Hakuba (no yarõ) mentioned something to him once, before deciding they hated each other. Kuro... kuro.... Kuroba.....
"Kuroba kaito. Yoroshiku tantei Han." The magician reveals suddenly, extending a hand in greeting. It was almost as if the magician had read his mind. (It was more accurate to say that hattori was not so good at hiding his thoughts as he believed, Kaito had read his face like an open book.)
