2: the unusual heist note
Conan's POV:
Sigh. This was so boring. I mean, elementary school isn't that bad, but I was high school detective kudo shinichi for Sherlocks sake! Well, I might have been once anyway. I was stuck in this seven year old body of mine until my friend haibara could reverse the effects of her drug. I daydreamed of the day I could return to being a proper detective ective again, without needing to hide behind uncle and a voice changing bow tie. I didn't sensei calling my name repeatedly.
"Conan kun, hoi, Conan kun. Are you listening conan kun?" I looked up with a jump as haibara poked me in the ribs none too kindly. I glared at her and looked at sensei.
"Hai!" I answered, waiting for the inevitable question at the end.
"Can you tell me what the answer to this is? She asked, writing a complicated maths question on the board. Or at least, it looked like that to the rest of the class, after all, not counting haibara, they were all seven year olds.i grinned and mischievous grin, my glasses glinting in the light as I tilted my head. In my sweet little conan voice I answered, correctly solving the easy maths question. Sensei sighed in defeat. She was trying to catch me out again, and she'd failed.
The rest of the morning was uneventful, with Ayumi, Genta and Mitshuiko, better known collectively as the detective boys, chattering about something at break. When the bell rang for lunch, they crowded around me and haibara, shouting with excitement.
"Ne, ne, Conan kun, guess what?" Ayumi chan asked excitedly. I shook my head, waiting for the explanation.
"Sonoko neechan and her uncle have incited us to next weeks kid heist!" Genta joins in.
"You are coming aren't you conan kun?" Mitshuiko asked. I nodded, my mind working overtime. I already knew two things about kid that no one else did (I knew his real name, and he wasn't the original kaitou kid who vanished 8 years prior to his reappearance) but that wasn't what was bothering me. It was the time of the heist in his note. It was so unlike the kaitou kid to send a heist note a week and a half in advance. There was something bothering me about that, but I pushed the thought from my mind and spent the rest of the day messing around, pretending to pay attention in class when I was asked.
It was soon time to go home, and the detective boys, haibara and I walked home together, separating at certain points to get home. I got to the detective agency and sighed. I could hear ran and uncle arguing again. She was always telling her father off for something. I climbed the stairs to the detective agency and opened the door.
"Tadaimas!" I announced as I walked in. Ran stopped arguing with uncle for a moment to greet me. Nothing unusual there, just another day of uncle and his useless detective skills. I walked into my room and picked up my Sherlock Holmes book, a study in scarlet. I curled up on the chair and began to read, a but sad that I only had twenty pages left. I read the book to the end, and just as I was putting it away, I heard rans best friend sonoko charge in.
Kaito's POV:
"Bakaito! Turn us back at once!" Aoko yelled at me, swinging her mop at me as she did so. I was bored of the lesson, so I had turned the class into dress wearing princesses, except hakubaka (AN, kaito calls hakuba hakubaka) who was wearing a neon pink suit and green and yellow dyed hair. Aoko swung the mop at me again, and this time I narrowly missed being hit. Our sensei was so used to Aokos mopfu and my magic tricks, that she didn't even bother to react. I was enjoying winding the class up, until I heard a howling bark from outside. It was common knowledge that I was looking after two dogs for a friend, but not many people knew that my wolf chan and Arthur kun were also kaitou kid's canine assistants.
I allowed Aoko to push me towards the second floor window, waiting for the right moment. She swung the mop towards me and I let her hit me, sending me flying out of the open classroom window. I heard everyone gasp, I imagined they were shocked at Aoko actually hitting me. I could see Aoko's surprised face looking at me out the window, as I landed heavily on my feet, falling backwards onto the Arthur kuns back. He whined at me and grabbed my shirt sleeve, wagging his tail. I moved closer to the young greyhound, and he trotted away from the schoolyard, trying to lead me somewhere.
The dog guided me home, scratching at the door for me to let him in. I opened the door to find the laptop out on the table, Wolf chan holding a pencil in her mouth, typing. (Wolf chan was a very clever dog, she could read and type words, useful for a magician thiefs dog. I looked at the words typed on the screen, paling as I did so. Someone had told jiroki that kid was planning to steal the golden twins (a pair of topaz earrings that were worth more that the Suzuki corporation).
I never sent such an advance notice, and I never send such obvious heist notes, but jiroki didn't care, he wanted me to try and steal the golden twins so he could catch me and put me behind bars. I grinned, keeping my poker face well intact. I would send a note to meitantei kun as soon as I knew who'd sent the note. Not that it was hard to guess. Snake and the others. I had been getting in their way more than usual, and snake, cobra, leopard and a younger one had been trying to capture me as well as the police and Meitantei kun.
Wolf's POV:
After kaito kun had read my message, fed me and Arthur, and called his jiichan, he began preparing some things for the heist. He like to plan out all the details, with plans a through z just in case he needed an alternative to his main plan. (A must with that conan boy around.) I could feel the change in the air, the tension and the worry, whilst Arthur kun showed no signs of picking up our masters emotions.
The magician was a good human, he'd taken care of us ever since I had ended up at the blue parrot the day I ran from the black org. I still had the leather pouch round my neck, still holding strong after a good year and a half. Kaito had respectfully left the pouch round my neck, seemingly knowing how much it meant to me. I had to get this to sherry, so she could reverse the effects on anyone who had been shrunk. But I was happy to stay with the kind magician thief who looked like kudo shinichi, the boy that sherry was trying to protect.
Arthur and I spent most of the day helping kaito kun, carrying things to and from the hidden room in our mouths, I even took his white kid cape to the dry cleaners by myself, the human lady not questioning why a dog had kids cape. (She was a fan of the magician thief and helped him when she could. She only ever spoke through dove messenger or me though, so kaito identity was safe.) we prepared for the heist all week, ready by the day before. Arthur kun was excited. He didn't understand human language like I did, he wasn't experimented on like me, but he knew we were stealing something with master tomorrow and that was good enough.
"You ready wolf chan, Arthur kun, jiichan?" Kaito asked as he fixed his monocle more firmly to his face. We were all stood on top of a tall building opposite kid's target, and i howl barked And wagged my tail, Arthur copying my tail sweeps, whilst jiichan nodded. Kaito patted my head and told me to look after my son (he still thought that because I was carrying such a young puppy that day, that it was my puppy). I licked his hand, wriggling with glee. I loved setting up the tricks with the doves and Arthur.
I waited for kid to attach my custom built harness to a twin set of wires, before he leapt off the building and joined the crowd. I noticed the bold disguise he used, his ordinary Kuroba kaito face. I grinned as much as I could, wishing I was human for the umpteenth time. I waited, Arthur kun pacing with impatience. Kaito kun had explained to me what to do, he treated me like a human in dog clothing now, and as I saw the puff of white smoke, I yipped at Arthur, who spins on his hind leg in excitement and races down the stairs. He had a tiny white card held between his teeth.
As soon as Arthur was out of sight, I raced out over the edge of the building, running using the two wires as a footpath. I was confident about this, I'd run the wires so often it was like second nature to my dog paws. I heard a shot ring out and then felt the bullet graze my shoulder, breaking my harness and removing my only link to safety. I flattened my ears and lifted a lip in a half snarl. I could smell him, that evil man called snake. I ran over the wire, ignoring my fright at seeing such a large drop with no safety wires. I entered the building through a bathroom window, watching out for police, detective and crime bosses. I followed orders to the letter, hacking the security system and setting of a fire alarm. (It even harder than. It sounds, after all, I had to type using a pencil in my mouth.)
The police evacuated, all except nakamori keibu, who was too intent on catching kid to notice. The Half Brit hakuba also ignored the alarm, muttering something about Kuroba going to far. I lifted my lip in a half snarl. This detective teen was persistent, determined to prove that kid was in fact his class mate. I followed them silently, my claws making no sound through the soft sheepskin boots I wore on heists. Both nakamori and hakuba were headed, to the roof, unaware of the confrontation occurring. My hackles rose, making me look bigger as I smelt the air. Snake, cobra, tigress, and leopard. I tried to stay back, to remain hidden, but when I heard a shot ring out, I couldn't obey orders any longer, allowing the keibu and detective teen to see me as I forced my way past in anger. I leapt at the closed door, making it shake with force, but it was locked. The key was small, too small for me to turn in my mouth, so I continued to fling myself at the door.
Hakuba's POV:
Crash
Crash
Crash. I heard the big dogs desperate attempt to get onto the roof, so I increased my pace. For the first time in history, the magician thief had been late for a heist, thirty four seconds and twenty one milliseconds late to be exact. I guessed that this big dog had something to do with it. I ran up behind the dog, not expecting it to snarl at me, but I ignored the fierce animal and unlocked the door. Before I could open it though, the dog and leapt up and pulled the handle down, racing out onto the roof. I heard a sound that made my blood run cold. A gunshot. I saw a white hang-glider plummet to the earth, but I seriously doubted kid was actually hurt. He'd pulled a stunt like this once before, and this time I wasn't so easily deceived.
The big white dog was ferociously attacking a man with a revolver in his hand, tearing his clothes and holding his arm for dear life. The blood curdling growling and the mans pitiful howls frightened me, but as a detective, I had to remain calm in order to think through and defuse the situation. I was at a loss. This dog was obviously dangerous, so I concluded that it wasn't one of kid's unusual pets.
"Wolf chan, ENOUGH!" A familiar Osakan voice rang out. I inwardly moaned, could my evening get any worse? The big doge turned to the dark skinned detective and whined, crouching on the floor, but still held tightly to the gun-mans arm. Hattori heiji, detective of the west. My rival at case solving, though I was more of a petty crime detective whereas his specialty was homicide, just like the detective of the east. The Osakan went up to the dog and man, no fear at all, and swiftly knocked the man out could with a single hit. The dog let go and wagged its tail, obviously recognising him.
hattori's POV:
I was wanderin' aroun' Ekoda, looking fer kudo. He had gone missin' in last nights kaitou kid heist, an' his friend ran was frantically lookin' for him. Only she knew the shrunken detective as Edogawa Conan. Kazuha was stayin' with ran and her father the rather stupid detective Mouri kogoro, so I was free ta wander around, looking fer any clues as to kudo's location. I remembered it clearly, seeing kid fall to the ground, with a small blue bundle in his arms.
The brindle dog had found me waitin fer kudo ta finish with crashin the heist. It had a small white card in its mouth, which it dropped into my hand. I read the card, notin that it was one of dem kid notes. It told me ta go ta da roof where 'kid killer' was an call off a dog dat would be up there fightin. I hadn't really got a clue what was going on, but I followed da orders an went up to da rooftop, calling da big dog off. It reacted to me as if it had always known me, and wagged it's long tail.
I was still daydreamin' bout last night when the same brindle dog shows up, another card in its jaws. I crouch down an' speak softly, letting the dog know I was safe. It dropped the card in me 'ands, and waited.
Detective of the west,
The boy is safe.
Arthur will bring you another note later,
He will follow you so he knows where to find you
Regards: kid's assistant.
I glanced at the brindle dog, wondering if this was Arthur kun. It didn't seem to have an owner nearby, and when I moved towards the hotel, it followed. I didn't think anything of it. Kid was so unpredictable, it would suit him to used specially trained animals to send notes. Maybe that's what he had been doing all this time, it would explain why he'd never been caught delivering notes. I was worried about kudo, but I couldn't do anything so I decided to talk to ran and Kazuha whilst waiting for another note. Had kid kidnapped kudo?
