15: Telling hakuba

Wolf's POV:
The two boys slept together in master Kaito's room, both seemingly exhausted after their....... excitement earlier. I crept out of the house and followed the scent trail hakuba kun left, he's spent so much time at Aoko's, that I think he should just move in. They're only friends, but that might have something to do with her being friends with the man he suspected of being kaitou KID (despite all the evidence to suggest otherwise) and her father hating him. He'd gone home, and I knew he was going to go back to England soon. I hope he was leaving tomorrow, master Kaito said to get the blond half Brit detective, so I had to. He was a good human, I respected master Kaito.

Arthur kun was curled up on the bottom of their bed, snoring loudly in time to the other two' silent breathing. That greyhound was spoilt rotten, like me. Whilst heading towards hakuba's home, I caught a scent that made my hackles rise. Gin, I could smell his fearsome stink. Where? Where was this evil man? I wanted to kill him, tear him limb from limb for hurting my two human friends. No. I mustn't kill, rule no 1 no one gets hurt, rule no 2 always accept a challenge, never back down, rule no 3 make a fool of the police force. The three most important KID rules I'd learnt.

I found hakuba kuns house, a nice looking place, I scratched at the door, noticing it had both a door bell and knocker. I had my special tablet around my neck, so I could talk to the detective if he let me in. I stretch my neck, touching the door bell and ringing it loudly in the darkness of the night. I couldn't believe how big of a dog I was. I then flicked the knocker three times just as loud, hearing the mildly irritated grunts of hakuba kun as he muttered he was coming. I sat at the front door and waited, my head tilted to one side with curiosity. There was a smell I'd never smelt before, like pigeon or dove, but smelt nastier. What was this smell? Did hakuba keep birds?

Hakuba's POV:
It was two thirty six am and forty three seconds when my doorbell rang out, then I heard a three beat knock as well. Who could be calling me at my house so early in the morning? Probably a police officer in need of help, my phones were all either disconnected or on silent so I wouldn't be disturbed. I liked my sleep... I hurry downstairs, dragging a t shirt and a pair of trouser on and I did. When I opened the door, I nearly fell over with surprise. THAT DOG.

The dog that protected Kudo sama and Kuroba kun when they were shot at. The dog was looking expectantly at me, head tilted to one side. What did it want. I don't know why, but I let the big animal in, watching it as it shook its head, a small tablet falling to the floor. It noses at the device, doing something to it. I was curious. Hadn't this dog been trained by kaitou KID? What sort of insane trick was this?

I pick the tablet up, curiously looking at the words on the screen. My eyes widened. Did this dog, wolf chan, write this? It certainly looked like it. I read the message, eyes widening. I was curious, this dog, what was she?

Hakuba kun.
Master Kaito wanted to tell you something,
He want to see you tomorrow, his house.
this is no trick, A dog is writing to you on a tablet.
No, I wasn't trained, I figured it out.
It's important, he needs your help I think,
Please? And what is that mean bird you have?
It smells like a crazy evil dove.

The last bit made me chuckle to myself. Kaito asking for help? And Watson an evil dove? Really? And why was this written in English?

"Wolf chan can understand people then?" I ask the dog, feeling stupid for talking to an animal. (Watson was my best friend, he didn't count!) I hold the tablet out, a bit incredulously. I wanted to see the dog type for myself. The fact that the dog was writing in English also spooked me. This dog was Japanese, right? She presses her nose against the tablet, tapping out more words.

Yes, but that can be explained later.
Master Kaito needs help. I sleep on floor, here, tonight,
Show you something tomorrow.
Big secret, but then....
Goodnight, detective kun.

Ok, I'm spooked. No logical thought process could explain this animal, and I didn't like it. I was a detective, being told what to do by a dog was not normal. But my interest was piqued, what was this big secret? The dog picks up a plaited string tied to the tablet and flicked her head, so that it hung around the malamutes thick neck like one of the necklaces kaitou KID liked to steal. She moves out of the way, and circles on the hard floor, settling down in a tight ball, looking at me, waiting for me to back to bed myself. I just hoped Watson wouldn't attack her when he went for his morning fly about. I never caged my friend, he stayed through choice, I even left the window open, in case he wanted to fly away.

Narrators POV:
Doyle kun was camping with the detective boys, in Osaka of all places, which made him a bit miserable. From the camp site, he could see his neighbour hood, his house. He wanted to go home, and tell his father to call of the hunt, and to reassure Kazuha he was ok. But, with the scary mini scientist watching him like that annoying hawk that blond detective had as a pet, he didn't have a chance. He managed to sneak off in the middle of the night, making it as far as the campsite exit, before he felt the sting of Haibara San's stun watch. He was worried about Kazuha! Why didn't the devil girl understand.

A phone call on Saturday cheered him up a bit, the detective boys all desperate to know who he'd spoken to. Doyle wouldn't say, but he was happier now. At lunch that same afternoon, Haibara SAN pulled him out of earshot and demanded an answer to the phone call. He told her the truth. It was Kudo, and he was working with 'a friend who knew who he was' in order to restore 'Conan' to them. Haibara glared at him. She knew, without having to think, that this person was kaitou KID, and wasn't impressed.

Hakuba's POV:
I wake up and go downstairs, remembering the dog as I hear an angry shriek from Watson. I rush into the room, expecting the hawk to be injured in some way, because what sort of dog wouldn't chase an easy prey like the hawk in my house? Wolf chan is cowering on the floor, paws over her muzzle, protecting her eyes from Watson furious attacks. There's red scratches all over the white dog's head, but Watson is fine. The tablet is on the floor, a half typed message on the screen. It's in English again.

That hawk must be Watson. Nice smell,
Evil dove smells nice. Not going to hurt him,
Not allowed, first rule of kaitou kid, no one
Gets hurt. It's watching, stretching wings...
It's flying towar

Watson had observed the malamute before attacking then. I call Watson to me, and smooth his ruffled feathers. The hawk rubs his head against my ear as he perches on my shoulder. I walk into my kitchen, making myself some coffee, and getting a dead chick from the container in the fridge for Watson. My feathered best friend takes the treat from my hand and flies off to his perch, leaving me and the white malamute alone in the kitchen. Shes watching my every move, but not begging for anything.

I offer the dog a bowl of water, which she sniffs carefully, and laps up some before sitting by the door. I head up to the shower and wash, getting dressed into fresh clothes. The dog doesn't have a lead, or anything, but from what I've seen at school, I doubted it would be an issue. I call Watson to me, and he flies over, perching on my shoulder. I only ever left him alone when I was at school, he went everywhere with me. I open the door, and wolf chan walks out and sits at the bottom of the steps. I lock my door, then follow the big dog. She leads me to Kuroba kuns house, opening the door by pulling the handle of the door down.

I walk into the hallway, and see two lookalikes sat on the sofa in the living room. One is Kuroba kun, the other is Kudo sama. Kudo sama is clinging to Kuroba kuns arm, watching me fearfully. I walk in, Watson on my shoulder, wolf chan racing off and playing with the well fed greyhound in the hall. Kuroba kun is watching my reaction, a smile plastered on his face.

"Hakuba kun, nice to see you. We have something we need your help with...." Kuroba kun smiles as he speaks, something is going on, and I'm clueless.

Shinichi's (Conan's) POV:
Hakuba kun and his hawk sit opposite us, waiting silently for answers. I know I have to try, I have to tell him the truth, well, some of it, but my throat is tight, I can't breathe, I'm scared. What if my voice doesn't work?

"Ha.....ha....ha..." I stutter, annoyed at myself. I could talk perfectly when only Kaito the doves and the dogs were here, so why was talking to a fellow detective so hard? I hear Kaito whisper in my ear. You can do it shin~chan. Ok, I'll try again.

"Hakuba kun, Conan is in trouble, kaitou KID knows where he is, but he needs a bit of help to rescue him. " I say confidently, though my voice is rougher than normal. I'm panicking, and panick always made me.... arrgggghhhhhhh, no, not now. I had to calm down. Hakuba kun was watching me, concern on his face. Kaito ignores Hakuba and grabs my arms, forcing me to look at him as another bolt of pain shot through me, signalling the start of my change into conan.

"Shin~chan?" He says softly, though it's clear Hakuba kun can hear us. "Shin~chan, it's alright, shin~chan, listen to me, he's not going to judge me, or you." He says glaring at Hakuba kun out of the corner of his cerulean eyes. I nod, still panicking. I feel another shooting pain rush through me, and I know if I don't calm down, I'm going to change into conan again, in front of Hakuba kun!

Narrators POV:
Hakuba looks on as the magician tries to calm the panic stricken detective down. He had heard his idols voice, clear as anything, but the look on the detectives face, it was worrying. He clutched his chest suddenly, like it hurt. Kaito's poker face shattered, worry and concern for his friend showing clearly. Much to hakuba's surprise, Kaito pulls shinichi into an embrace, holding the detective close in his arms. Hakuba is looking at them, eyes wide with surprise as Kaito kisses the other boy, and the other boy relaxes slightly and kisses back. They break the kiss, and Kaito whispers something hakuba can't hear. (You still going to change? I have a smoke pellet in my pocket if so.). Shinichi shakes his head in reply.

"Sorry hakuba kun, I'm just not used to being social. I've been hiding for a year and a half. That big case I'm on, the reason I vanished, I was attacked and left for dead. I survived, but when they found out, they opened fire, hurting Kaito badly. When they find out.... find out....... ah, ah..... ahhhhh...." shinichi apologises and explains, as he begins to panic again. This time, Kaito just holds the distraught detective in his arms, hakuba looking at them with curiosity.

Meanwhile, Arthur kun was looking at the big white dog before him. They were in the kitchen, and suddenly, for the first time, Arthur kun remembered everything. His old, old body, the pain he felt as he aged too fast after leaving his torturous racing dog life for the labs, how he woke up one day to see the big white dog next to him, still a puppy back then. She saved him, rescuing him and escaping when he suddenly became a puppy again. How had he forgotten? Wolf chan could sense the change in the young dog, and they were now talking in the dog way, with their tails, eyes and ears, talking about everything. Wolf chan was suprised to find that Arthur kun was above average intelligence for a dog, he'd just enjoyed being a normal dog rather than a caged brute who only felt the air in his fur and gravel under his paws when he raced.

Kaito's POV:
Shin~chan is explaining to hakuba kun why he'd gone missing a year and a half ago, missing out the bits about being conan. He beginning to panic again, so I hold him tight in a hug again. Hakuba pulls a strange face as his brain tries to digest the new information. He's heard me call the detective shin~chan and he's seen us kiss. I don't care. I ask shin~chan if he's going to change back onto conan, because I'd throw a smoke pellet for him to hide behind. He shakes his head. The shooting had turned my confident detective into an empty, terrified shell. I could understand. Gin had been frightening. Almost as scary as fish.

"Hakuba kun, I want to show you something, but you must promise not to tell a soul, even Aoko. Shin~chan knows, but I think he's frightened your going to take me away from him if we tell you the truth..." I tell the blond detective, motioning him to follow. I show him my room, and tell him to look at my fathers portrait closely. He refuses, saying this must be some kind of prank, so shin~chan goes over to it instead, and opens the secret door. Hakuba kun is silent. A hidden room, bet he never realised I had one.

This is going to be tough, I Need hakuba kun's help to get 'conan back, but to do that, he needs to know I'm Kaito kid. I let him follow shin~chan into the hidden basement, and watch as he exclaims loudly at the paraphernalia there. Even pops car. He marvels at it all, and I throw down a smoke grenade as the cabinet containing my KID outfit slid up from the floor. Hakuba kun gawks at the cabinet, seeing the clean white suit and cape. That horrid watson is still on his shoulder. Should I tell Hakuba kun that his best friend killed and ate two of my doves in front of me? No, I'll leave that for another time.

"You ARE Kaitou KID then, Kuroba kun." He exclaims. Then remembers. "But how did you appear in the same room as kid at the same time as him? Did you hire a fan?" I laugh, hire someone? Really? Hakuba kun was about to get a rather odd surprise.... maybe I should dye his hair neon orange.....

"Kaito didn't hire anyone, watch!" Shin~chan grins suddenly, grabbing a smoke grenade from the side and throwing it on the floor. Wow, shin~chan loved to be dramatic, didn't he. Behind the smoke screen, he put on the KID costume, and I put on my spare one. I know we look identical dressed as KID, because Hakuba kun had been fooled before. His face is priceless as he stares open mouthed at the two of us.

"Kudo sama?" Oh, right, Hakuba kun idolises shin~chan, I wonder how he's going to take it. "You, a famous detective, is helping kaitou KID?" He asks my favourite detective.

"No. I help my boyfriend." Shin~chan states calmly, it's like talking to Hakuba kun has made him regain some of his lost confidence. "I help my boyfriend, not KID" he repeats. Hakuba kun is just staring at him, eyes wide.

Hakuba's POV:
I honestly don't believe it. Kudo sama is helping Kaitou KID! And just as I've always suspected, Kuroba kun is kid. Kuroba kun and Kudo sama are asking for help, they want me to help them find the KID Killer. Apparently conan kun is a relative of Kudo sama, and Kuroba kun knows where he's being held, but he can't have the police interfere, in case the criminals open fire.

"The demands are simple, they want Shin~chan dead. Or they kill tantei kun." Kuroba kun explains, a crack appearing in his poker face. He turns to kudo sama and hugs him, is that a tear I see?

"Don't worry, kaitou kid is going to steal conan kun from them, but I'm not going to be of much help. If they see me, they'll shoot at me again. Last time that happened, Kaito was nearly killed and the gunman lost his hand." Kudo sama continues. And the words Kudo sama said are running around in my mind. 'No, I help my boyfriend.' Kudo sama was gay? For a thief?!! I focused on the conundrum at hand.

"I'm going to disappear again, I'll still see kaito, but no one can know where I am. It's the safest thing for everyone." Kudo sama... why take such a risk? I can see the fear In his face, and Kaito is definitely crying. Creepy. Ive never seen the cheerful prankster upset before, what was really going on? They were not telling me the whole story. I agree to help them in any way I can, but if I catch Kuroba kun as kaitou KID, I'm still having him arrested.

Narrators POV:
The silver haired criminal winced in pain. That dratted white dog. Taking his left hand off with a clean bite. He couldn't aim for anything with his right hand. Vodka had been mauled by the animal, getting shot by a long range sniper bullet from a ridiculous angle. Only one person could do that, and he was dead. Akai Shuuichi. He rubbed the stump where his left hand had been. The doctor had done a marvellous job, but he was six feet under now, Gin couldn't risk being exposed as the gunman who shot the boy. No mention of kudo shinichi in the news, though they news woman had stated a teenager had been shot near the famous author Kudo yuusakus house. No mention if the boy had survived.

Gin hoped not. That detective brat was a threat, like the seven year old who'd organised a coordinated attack on the organisation ordering the FBI, CIA and international police, practically the sole plotter in the takedown of his employer. He planned to off Vermont at some point, she acted strange around the boss, always avoiding the subject of the seven year old brat 'silver bullet' as she called him. What Gin didn't know, or anyone else, was that vermouth knew where kudo shinichi was, and why his body had never been found.
