Prologue

"Have we met?"

I let out a weak giggle, one a child might, and I scold myself for it. This isn't the time for giggles or laughter.

This isn't the same, This isn't really her.

I give the girl my best smile, all things considered. "No, I don't believe we have." I stick my hand out for her to shake, "Violetta Night."

She takes my hand, shaking it with an intensity I wasn't expecting. "Marian Vashek." She drops my hand and her nearly nonexistent smile. She continues with hesitation. "I-I could've sworn I knew you."

"I'm here for a vacation..." I trail off, not knowing why I started to explain myself.

For some reason, the trust I had in the previous Marian came rushing back. Marian was always a person that I had been able to confide in and to trust with my heart. An easy person to love, but an easier friend.

"Oh," she perks up, " where are you staying?"

My eyes light up, happy to answer. "In the French Quarter, Wyndham." The French Quarter, otherwise known as the most expensive place to stay in the French quarter. Considering its advantageous location, the elegance of the place was a sweet delight.

New Orleans, finally recovered from the latest tropical storm was in high spirits and the place appeared to have seemingly endless amounts of alcohol--but that was no surprise. The booze was one of the reasons I've always loved New Orleans.

There's no better place to drown your sorrows and party like there's no tomorrow.

For a time I had ranked Rio as my number one 'drown the sorrow' spot, but had soon grown to love the city of New Orleans more.

"Well, I live in the French quarter with a few friends," I add. "You want to get a drink, maybe?"

"Sure, how about tonight?"

"Sure and there's this great little place called Orleans Grapevine Wine Bar & Bistro. They have the best pan-seared scallops you'll ever taste."

"I love scallops, how did you know? Oh and I'll see you tonight at, say," she looks to the sky, contemplating, "seven. Sharp."

"Great and I guess it was just a lucky guess. About the scallops."

"Well, that was a good guess. It's been a pleasure to meet you, Violetta. I'll be seeing you around. And, well, later today."

"See you later."

"See you later."
