Chapter 34

Azrael's latest assignment left Eren with a sinking feeling. This mission was not like the others; it wasn't a simple silencing or intimidation. Instead, Azrael wanted Eren to infiltrate the ranks of a growing rebel faction—the very group that had been rumored to harbor those disillusioned with Azrael's rule.

It was a test, Azrael had hinted—a test of Eren's loyalty, cunning, and ruthlessness. To betray his former allies and root out the rebellion from within.

That night, as he prepared to leave, Eren's thoughts were fractured. Memories of Nera's concerned gaze and Lysandra's defiance flared within him, but he forced them down. He couldn't afford hesitation now; survival meant obeying Azrael's orders, regardless of the cost.

Entering the Rebel's Den

Disguised and cloaked, Eren slipped into the shadows of the underground tavern where the rebels met, a decrepit place hidden away beneath the city's cobbled streets. Smoke and whispers filled the air as he wove through the crowded room, keeping his gaze low and his demeanor inconspicuous.

A familiar figure at the far corner caught his attention. It was Alaric, one of the few friends Eren had made during his early days as an apprentice mage—a fellow who had once shared his visions of a better world. But that was before the darkness crept into Eren's life, before he had pledged himself to Azrael.

Eren approached cautiously, unsure if Alaric would even recognize him under the shadowed hood he wore. When he reached the table, he cleared his throat, and Alaric looked up, his eyes narrowing.

"Do I know you?" Alaric's voice held a hint of suspicion, but also an openness that reminded Eren of the past they once shared.

Eren lowered his hood, revealing just enough of his face. "It's been a while, Alaric."

The man's eyes widened, shock registering on his face. "Eren? I thought... I thought you were lost to us."

"Not yet," Eren replied, his voice calm, betraying nothing of the storm within him. "I've come because I can't stand by any longer. Azrael's influence... it's become a poison. I thought I could endure it, but now I know I was wrong."

It was a lie, and yet it stung like truth. Alaric's gaze softened, hope flickering in his eyes. "Then you're here to join us?"

Eren nodded, watching as Alaric's face broke into a relieved smile. It was too easy, he thought, this deception—too simple to slip back into the role of ally and friend. But guilt twisted in his chest, a reminder of the price that loyalty to Azrael demanded.

As they talked, Alaric introduced him to the other members of the faction, and Eren quickly observed the structure of the group. They were organized but small, a mix of commoners, disgruntled soldiers, and minor nobles. The leaders, he noted, were cautious but hopeful—idealists who believed they could dismantle Azrael's iron rule.

By the end of the night, Eren had gathered more than enough information to fulfill Azrael's mission. Yet as he left the tavern and slipped back into the city's darkened streets, a weight settled in his heart. These people weren't merely threats to Azrael; they were souls yearning for freedom, clinging to the last fragments of hope he had long since abandoned.

The next day, Eren stood before Azrael in the grand chamber, his report prepared, every detail laid out in cold, calculated precision. But as he spoke, describing the rebels' structure, their plans, and their vulnerabilities, he felt the familiar sting of doubt gnawing at him.

Azrael listened with a keen, detached interest, his gaze sharp and unyielding. When Eren finished, the Shadow Lord leaned back, his fingers steepled.

"You've done well, Eren," Azrael said, his voice smooth as silk. "Your loyalty is unquestionable. But there's one final task I require from you—a test of your dedication to our cause."

Eren's pulse quickened, but he forced his expression to remain calm. "What would you have me do, my lord?"

Azrael's eyes gleamed with dark satisfaction. "Lead them to their demise. Gain their trust, then betray them in one fell swoop. Their blood will serve as a message to anyone else who dares to defy me."

The weight of the command settled over Eren, heavier than any burden he had borne before. He had betrayed people in the past, silenced them, manipulated them. But this was different; Alaric, Nera's friends—people who had once believed in him. And now, Azrael expected him to crush that trust, to turn it into a weapon.

For the first time, hesitation flickered across Eren's face, a tiny crack in the mask he had worn for so long.

Azrael noticed, his gaze narrowing. "Is there a problem, Eren?"

Eren clenched his fists, forcing himself to meet the Shadow Lord's gaze. "No, my lord. I will see it done."

A pleased smile spread across Azrael's lips. "Good. Show them the consequences of defiance. Leave nothing but ashes."

As Eren walked away from Azrael's chamber, he felt the hollow ache growing within him. He had been told this path would bring power, respect, control over his fate. But with each step he took, he felt further from the man he once was.

Back at his quarters, he poured himself a drink, staring into the glass as the liquid swirled. Memories of the hopeful apprentice mage he had once been floated to the surface—memories of laughter shared with Alaric, of dreams built on promises of a better world.

And then he made a decision.

He would not betray them—not Alaric, not the people who had dared to dream of freedom, even in the face of Azrael's tyranny. But he couldn't simply abandon his place within Azrael's ranks. That, too, would be a death sentence.

So, he would walk the line, a knife's edge between loyalty and betrayal, choosing his actions with precision and caution. He would become a shadow within a shadow, striking at Azrael's power from within, planting seeds of resistance where none could see.

With a quiet resolve, he set down the glass and rose to his feet, a single thought burning in his mind.

No longer would he be a pawn. He would be the one holding the strings, manipulating the players, steering the game from the shadows.
