one // hanahaki disease

"Chat Noir... I am so, so tired..." Marinette whispers.

"Huh?" I ask, surprised.

Her half-opened eyes look at me with pain. Blood covered petals slowly force their way up and spill out off her mouth.

"Are you okay, princess?" I ask concerned, with my cat ears pressed flat against my head.

Thick tears slowly start to fall down her cheeks. She grabs her throat, collapsing into my arms. She shivers and cuddles up next to me. Her eyes shut tight, taking in the little bit of oxygen she has left.

"You were right, Chat..." Marinette squeezes out, blood spilling from her mouth.

"Marinette?!" I shout, grabbing her shoulders.

"I should have t-told him...!" she chokes.

"Marinette!"

She takes in her last gasp of air.

"I should have told Adrien Agreste I loved him!"

"Marinette, could you answer the question on the board for me?"

I quickly snap back into reality and look at the board in the front of the classroom.

"Uh... Abraham Lincoln?" I ask, taking a shot at the question.

The whole classroom erupts in laughter, and I wince.

"Marinette, I do hope you know this is geometry," my teacher informs me.

I sigh and melt down into my seat, covering my bright red face from the classroom. I'm so embarrassed. I was lost in thought, thinking about him. Adrien. He's so perfect, so kind, so charming. He's everything you could want in a guy. You can't help but get lost in thought thinking about him.

"Girl, you really need to start focusing!" I hear my best friend Alya whisper, cupping her hand and facing me. "Were you thinking about Adrien again?"

I groan and stuff my face back into my arms on the table. Alya just giggles.

The school bell rings. I immediately jump out of my seat and toss my bag over my shoulder, eager to get out of class, but Alya has other plans. She grabs the back of my backpack and forces me to turn around, throwing her arm around my shoulder and leaning on me.

"Hey, Nino! Adrien!" She calls out.

"Whats up?" Nino asks, with Adrien trailing behind him.

Although the conversation includes them, Alya seems to be talking just to me.

"Would you boys like to accompany us at the park later today? Marinette and I want to check out the cherry blossom trees while they're still in season."

Nino smirks. "Sure, but only if my dude Adrien can come!"

"I can, actually! Today is my off-day from photo shoots," Adrien says, flashing his classic model smile.

"Great, see y'all around 3:30!" Alya replies.

Adrien smiles as he and Nino walk by me. "See you then, Marinette."

My shoulders slouch and I giggle with my cheeks turning bright pink.

Once the boys are gone out of ear-shot, Alya grabs my shoulders and shakes them. "Don't blow this, Marinette. It's April and you only have a month left before school is out and you blow your chance to tell Adrien how you really feel!"

I sigh. "I know, I know..."

Alya rolls her eyes. "No, girl, I mean it this time! Ask to talk to him privately under the big cherry tree. And tell him. I mean it. Tell him you love him!"

I meekly smile. "Okay, I will."

She crosses her arms and shifts her body weight to one leg. "Say it."

"I will tell Adrien I like him..." I whisper.

"Louder."

"I will tell Adrien I like him."

"Louder!"

"I will tell Adrien I like him!" I practically scream.

She smiles and throws up a thumbs up. "There you go, Marinette! Now run home and get changed into your cutest outfit. I'll meet you at the park ten minutes before the boys get there."

I eagerly nod and dash down the school's stairwell, pumped up by the speech Alya gave me. As soon as I reach my house, I give Mama and Papa a peck on the cheek and sprint up to my bedroom.

"Today's the day, Tikki, I can feel it!" I eagerly squeal.

Tikki is my kwami. Tikki is what helps me transform into Ladybug, the superhero that protects Paris. My partner is Chat Noir. I don't know his secret identity however, and he doesn't know mine. Nobody must know I'm Ladybug, so I usually just keep to myself and avoid talking about superheroes in general.

"I proud of you, Marinette!" She replies. "Just promise me you'll be careful."

I stop digging through my closet and look back at the tiny kwami. "What do you mean, be careful?"

"You know that the miraculous holders are meant to end up together. Your fates are intertwined," she reminds me.

I roll my eyes. Chat Noir is my friend and I love him as a partner, but I cannot imagine spending the rest of my life with that little alley cat.

"Yeah, I know Tikki. But how do our fates relate to me staying safe?"

She sighs. "Well, the power of love is powerful on the miraculous holders. The emotion will be more impactful on you compared to a normal civilian. It will make you feel more emotional than a normal person would."

"Tell me about it," I grumble, looking around at my room. My eyes glance over my many posters of Adrien, all with little hearts doodled over them. If someone walked into my room as it is right now, it would probably seem like I'm a stalker.

"I'm serious Marinette!" She snaps.

"How is it dangerous then?" I impatiently ask.

She sighs again. "Well, the miraculous holders can actually get diseases because of how powerful the emotion is on their health."

I freeze and look at her with pure shock.

"If something goes wrong, you can become heartbroken," she continues. "The heartbreak will impact your emotional and physical health."

"H-How?" I nervously ask, secretly hoping that she wouldn't answer the question.

"There's several types of diseases, but there are two main ones that could change a person forever," she explains.

I walk closer to the floating kwami with nervous steps.

"The first one is called Hanahaki."

"Well... what is it?" I whisper, holding my hands up to my chest.

"Hanahaki Disease is a disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love," she explains. "It ends when the beloved returns their feelings, or..."

She gulps.

"...when the victim dies."

I gasp and stumble backwards, tripping and collapsing to the ground. I land with a loud thump, and shake my head.

"I-I could die from not confessing my feelings?" I question with a shaky voice. "How?!"

The kwami looks towards the ground. "Flowers grow in the victim's lungs. Thorns grow on the stems and grow around the heart. If the victim waits to long to confess their feelings, the thorns will choke the victim, eventually killing them, along with the petals that the victim coughs out. If the thorns don't kill them, then the petals will choke the victim to death."

I shake my head in disbelief. "And... there's another disease?"

"The second disease is Glass Heart. If the victim's beloved rejects their confession and the victim doesn't move on, their heart will slowly start to turn into glass. The vicim will feel cold and alone. If the victim continues to not move on, then the heart will fully turn into glass, causing the victim to feel sharp stabs of glass shards in the heart and eventually shutting off all emotion," she sadly explains, "including love."

"So if I don't confess my love, I could get Hanahaki Disease. If I do confess my love and he rejects me and I refuse to move on, then my heart could turn into glass," I repeat. "So the only way I could be safe is if he accepts my confession?"

"Love is a very powerful yet fragile thing, Marinette. In the end, it could kill you, or make you the happiest person alive."

I look down at my balled up fists. I don't want to believe her, but deep down, I know it's not true. I just don't want to believe her. I can't believe her.

I nod as I stand up, then turn back to my closet.

"Promise me, Marinette. Promise me you will be careful."

I sigh, still not wanting to believe her silly diseases. "I promise."

I continue to dig through my closet until I find the perfect sundress. It's pink with my classic flower design embroidered on it. The flower dress has a choker collar, and goes down to slightly above mid thigh. It's sleeveless, which makes it sleek and elegant. I grab some golden sandals at the bottom of my closet, then dash to my bathroom to brush my hair.

I reach for my brush and calmly comb through my hair, forcing the thought of me catching a disease to the back of my head. Today is going to be perfect, and nothing could change that. I lightly dab some pink blush over my golden freckles. I sneeze as some powder finds its way to my nose. I giggle to myself, and continue getting ready.

When I step out of the bathroom, Tikki smiles. "You look gorgeous, Marinette. Absolutely stunning!"

I smile back. My hair is down on my shoulders, with a headband holding my hair back. I put on mascara and accompanied it with peach-flavored lipgloss and blush. I'm wearing a cute white bracelet that pops against my rose-colored silky dress. I look... perfect.

"Now you better get on your way, or you'll be late!" She reminds me.

I giggle and nod my head. I grab Tikki's bag and sling it over my shoulders, and skip down my bedroom stairs. I reach the first floor and the smell of fresh baked bread accompanied by chocolate-chip cookies fills my nose. I smirk, thinking about how Chat always loved the cookies we made here. Maybe Adrien would like some too.

I quickly grab a paper bag and shake, filling the bag with air and propping it open. I grab six or seven cookies, and fold the bag shut. I could share the cookies with the rest of my friend group. It would be a good ice-breaker.

I continue on my path to the park. I open the door and close it, with the familiar sound of a bell ringing who's purpose was to signal Mama and Papa that someone entered the shop. I continue to walk down the sidewalk until I reached the park, which was only a street away. The cherry blossoms were absolutely jaw-dropping, with their rose-gold petals littering the grass and the streets.

"Marinette!" Alya gasps as soon as she sees me. "You look breathtaking!"

"Really?" I ask with flustered cheeks.

She grabs me by the shoulders and pulls me into a hug. I giggle as she squeezes me tight against her. She pulls away after a second or two and lightly taps my noes.

"Adrien will fall head over heels for you, you know that right?" She teases.

I smile and look towards the ground, my confidence rising by the second. Today's the day. I will tell Adrien how I feel.

She sniffs the air and looks around. "Do you smell that?"

My eyes light up as I bring the bag of cookies upfront to her view.

"Girl." She exclaims. "You're literally so smart. The way to a mans heart is through his stomach, you know."

I laugh and throw my head backwards. She snickers and grabs a cookie herself. Once the golden-brown cookie slides into her mouth, her eyes immediately open wide open and a giant grin grows on her from ear to ear.

"These are delicious, Marinette!" she breathes.

"What are?" Nino asks, appearing suddenly behind Alya with Adrien close beside him.

"Babe!" Alya replies, hugging her boyfriend, then pulling away and pointing towards my cookies. "Marinette made these bomb cookies. You and Adrien need to try one!"

Nino and Adrien both stick their hand into the bag and bite down into the soft, chewy cookies. Their eyes light up as the warm chocolate melts in their mouth, leaving them wanting more of the sugary goodness.

"Marinette, did you make these?" Adrien asks, with his bright green eyes staring deep into mine.

"Y-Yeah," I stutter, feeling the familiar feeling of pink growing on my cheeks.

"They're absolutely delicious! You're very talented!" He exclaims. I giggle and smile a childish smile.

Alya quickly tilts her head towards Adrien, and then looks back at me. I quietly gasp, but then nod my head.

"Hey, Adrien, could I talk to you?" I manage ask without stuttering.

He smiles back sweetly. "Sure. Where to?"

"The big cherry tree at the end of the park," I inform, grabbing his hand.

He grins. "Alright, let's go."

First chapter done :) I finally found a really good story idea, and I plan on sticking to it. I want it to be mainly MariChat. I also want the aesthetic to revolve around rose petals and glass, so expect that in the coming chapters. There is plenty of symbolism, so make sure to pay attention to that too!

[sorry about deleting miraculous next gen. I didn't like the idea, and I only wrote it because I liked the comic i drew. I promise I'll stick to this story]
