Chapter 5

Emma's POV

When I finally caught up to Barry, he was far from calm. "Where are going?" I asked him.

"STAR Labs, I need answers," Barry said.

"Well, I'm coming with you," I said.

"No, you stay here," Barry said.

"Barry, I'm coming with you," I said again grabbing his arm forcing him to stop walking.

"Fine, let's go," Barry said, finally cracking a small smile.

"Okay, that was easier than I thought it would be," I said smiling. I was about to jump onto Barry's back when he picked me up bridal-style and ran.

*At STAR Labs*

"I wasn't the only one affected by the particle accelerator explosion, was I?" Barry asked angrily as he stormed into the Cortex with me trailing behind him.

"We don't know for sure," Dr. Wells said.

"What the hell does that mean?" I asked getting annoyed as well.

"You said the city was safe, that there was no residual danger. But that's not true, so what really happened that night?" Barry asked.

"Well, the accelerator went active, we all felt like heroes, and then, it all went wrong. A dimensional barrier ruptured, unleashing unknown energies into our world, anti-matter, dark energy, - X-elements..." Dr. Wells trailed off.

"Those are all theoretical," I said.

"And how theoretical is Mr. Allen? We've mapped dispersion throughout and around Central City but we have no way of knowing exactly what or who was exposed. We've been searching for other metahumans, like Mr. Allen," Dr. Wells said.

"Metahumans?" Barry questioned.

"That's what we're calling them," Caitlin said.

"We saw one today. He's a bank robber, and he can control the weather," Barry said.

"This keeps getting cooler," Cisco said smiling.

"This is not cool! Alright? A man died. Mardon must have gotten his powers the same way Barry did. From the storm cloud. He's still out there. We have to stop him before he hurts anyone else," I said angrily.

"Chill, Emma. I was just kidding, gosh," Cisco said. I just rolled my eyes and Barry shook his head disapprovingly.

"Emma's right we have to stop him," Barry said.

"Barry! Emma! That's a job for the police," Dr. Wells yelled.

"Yeah, we work for the police," Barry said, yelling as well.

"As a forensic scientist and his assistant," Dr. Wells said.

"You're responsible for this. For him," I yelled. At this point, I didn't care what Ronnie would have wanted me to do. I know he would have wanted me to calm down but Dr. Wells is being so unreasonable that I couldn't handle it.

"What's important is Barry! Not me.  I lost everything. I lost my company. I lost my reputation. I lost my freedom. And then Barry, you broke your arm, and it healed in three hours. Inside your body, could be a map to a whole new world genetic therapy, vaccines, medicines, treasures, Barry. Deep within your cells, and we cannot risk losing everything because you want to go out and play hero. You're not a hero. You're just a young man who was struck by lightning," Dr. Wells yelled at both me and Barry. Barry obviously had had enough, because he picked me up and sped us out of STAR Labs into the city.

Barry kept running until he stopped at a sign that said 'Starling City'. I realized he stopped running because my jacket was on fire. "GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF!" I screamed. Barry ripped my jacket off and started stomping on it to put the fire out. "I loved the jacket. And now, I regret wearing just a t-shirt under it, I'm cold," I pouted.

"Here, take mine," Barry said shrugging his jacket off.

"No, I can't. You need it," I said. "No, I'm not the idiot who wore a thin t-shirt in the fall," Barry laughed.

"Fine," I said as I grabbed his jacket and put it on. Barry started running again until we ran to a building that Oliver Queen or, Arrow was standing on. How do I know Oliver Queen it the Arrow you ask. Well, Batman aka Bruce, sent me to Starling some time ago to help Team Arrow in a case that was similar to what the Joker was doing back in Gotham. That and Oliver wasn't wearing his mask.

"So that's my story. I've spent my whole life searching for the impossible. Never imagining that I would become the impossible," Barry finished. Woah, I zoned out for a while.

"So why come to me? Something tells me you two didn't just run 600 miles to say hi to a friend," Oliver said.

"Well, to be fair, Barry was the one who did the running, I was just the one who he carried, and the one whose jacket caught on fire on the way here," I said shrugging. I'm so glad Barry gave me his jacket, it's so cold. "Continue.." I said to Barry who was looking at me with an amused look.

"All my life I've wanted to just do more. Be more. And now I am. And the first chance I get to help someone, I screw up. I was chasing the bad guy, and someone died," Barry said guiltily. Last time I've dealt with the type of guilt Barry was feeling, Tim Drake was guilty because he couldn't save everyone. Of course, Bruce and Dick helped him because they were experienced, I, on the other hand, was not.

"If you really do this you're gonna make mistakes. I've made mistakes. But the good you do will outweigh the bad," Oliver said wisely.

"What if Wells is right? What if I'm not a hero? What if I'm just some guy who was struck by lightning?" Barry asked doubting himself.

"I don't think that bolt of lightning struck you, Barry. I think it chose you," Oliver said wisely again. Wow, Oliver is on a roll today.

"I'm not sure if I'm like you, Oliver. I don't know if I can be some vigilante," Barry said.

"You can be better. Because you can inspire people, in a way that I never could. Watching over your city like a guardian angel, making a difference saving people. In a flash. Take your own advice. Wear a mask," Oliver said. With that Oliver took out his bow shot a grappling arrow and swung to the building next door.

"Cool," Barry and I said at the same time. We looked at eachother and smiled.

"Ready?" he asked.

I nodded and said "Try not to burn this jacket, I don't want to be cold," while he picked me up bridal-style.

"I'm not making any promises. Besides, you look cute my clothes," he said while smirking. Wait, did he just say that. Before I could say anything, Barry sped off.

Barry's POV

"Ready?" I asked.

Emma nodded and said "Try not to burn this jacket, I don't want to be cold," while I picked her up.

"I'm not making any promises. Besides, you look cute in my clothes," I said while smirking. Dang it Barry, you scared her off I scolded myself. It looked like she was about to say something so I sped off before I could embarrass myself any further.

*At STAR Labs* Still Barry POV

"Emma and I've been going over unsolved cases from the past 9 months, and there's been a sharp increase in unexplained deaths, and missing people. Your metahumans have been busy. Now, we're not blaming you, we know you didn't mean for any of this to happen. we know you all lost something. But we need your help to catch Mardon, and anyone else out there like him. But we can't do it without you," I said to Caitlin and Cisco. Emma frowned and looked at the floor when I mentioned losing something.

"If we're gonna do this I have something that might help. Something I've been playing with," Cisco said while showing us a crimson costume, "It's designed to replace the turnouts firefighters traditionally wear. I thought if Star Labs could do something nice for the community, maybe people wouldn't be so angry at Doctor Wells anymore."

"How's it going to help Barry?" Emma asked.

"It's made of a reinforced tri-polymer, it's heat and abrasive resistant, so it should withstand your moving at high-velocity speed. And the aerodynamic design should help you maintain control. Plus, it has built-in sensors, so we can track your vitals, and stay in contact with you from here," Cisco said.

"Thanks. Now, how do we find Mardon?" I asked.

"I re-tasked Star Labs satellites to track meteorological abnormalities over Central City. We just got a ping. Atmospheric pressure dropped 20 millibars in a matter of seconds. I've tracked it to a farm just west of the city," Caitlin said.

"Great let's do this," Emma said cheerfully while rubbing her hands together. God, that smile, it can be the death of me....
