Bueno, estoy participando en la segunda temporada de un concurso de portadas de habla inglesa llamado Hold the Door de KarateChop. Participé en la primera temporada también pero las portadas que hice en ese entonces no me gustaron, por lo que compartiré aquí las de la segunda temporada solamente.

Well, I am participating in the second season of Hold the Door graphic contest by  KarateChop. I participated in the first season too but I don't like covers I made back then, so I will share here just the ones of this season.

~RONDA 1/ROUND 1~

En esta ronda había que escoger entre utopía y distopía para el género, el título siendo As we rise y As we crumble respectivamente.

Lo que yo quería representar en esta portada era como una joven bailando en un mundo utópico, siendo aquel baile algo sumamente relevante en la historia y en el mundo en sí (esto se ve en el subtítulo). El suelo es un edificio de vidrio y la pared también, por lo que no sabría explicar dónde rayos está bailando en relación al suelo... No importa jajaj

In this round we had to choose between dystopia and utopia for the genre, being the title As we rise and As we crumble respectively.

What I wanted to represent in this cover was a girl dancing in a utopian world, being that dance something extremely relevant in the story and in the world itself (you should get this bc of the subtitle). The floor is a glass building and the background walls too, so I wouldn't know how to explain where is she dancing in relation to the ground... It doesn't matter hahah

~RONDA 2/ROUND 2~

En esta ronda había que escoger un clásico y llevarlo a la actualidad.

Quise ir por el lado cómico y transformé Romeo y Julieta en una historia en la que su amor se ve obstaculizado por las elecciones presidenciales de EEUU ya que él apoya a Trump y ella a Hillary.

In this round we had to choose a clasic and transform it so it fits in the present.

I wanted to go through the humour side and turned Romeo and Juliet into a story in which their love is obstaculised by the USA elections. He votes for Trump and she for Hillary.

¡¡¡SEGUNDO LUGAR!!!/SECOND PLACE!!!

~RONDA 3/ROUND 3~

En esta ronda había que tomar un cuento de hadas y darle un gran giro, además la portada no podía tener un fondo complejo, es decir, solo usar texturas, colores o fondos muy simples. La portada debía representar la historia y el giro a través de un objeto característico del cuento original que debía ser lo central en la imagen.

No me pude aguantar y tuve que ir al terror/fantasía, es que amo hacer eso. Tan solo miren a Rapunzel, quedó hermosa <3 El giro consta de que al nacer Rapunzel, Gothel se la lleva sin obstáculo alguno al haber maldecido a sus padres con la obligación de entregar al bebé. Sin embargo, la bruja no sabía que aquella maldición afectaría a Rapunzel también, aunque de una manera... diferente. Agradecimiento especial a magical_havoc por ayudarme con el título.

In this round we had to give a big twist to a fairytale. The background had to be simple, meaning a texture or color. The fairytale and the twist had to be represented by an important object taken of the original tale, it had to be the main element on the cover.

I couldn't hold myself and had to go with horror/fantasy, it's just... idk I love it. Just look at Rapunzel, she is beautiful <3 Well, the twist is that when Rapunzel was born, Gothel takes her away with no obstacles because she had cursed the parents with the obligation of giving her the baby. However, the witch didn't know that the curse would affect Rapunzel too, though in a... different way.

~RONDA 4/ROUND 4~

En esta ronda había que elegir una emoción de una lista y hacer una portada tipográfica representándola.

Escogí despair (desesperanza, desesperación [yo lo utilicé como desesperación]). La idea era representar en la portada aquella sensación de desesperación en el ahogo bajo el agua. Las letras están deformadas para acompañar el efecto visual que todo tiene bajo el agua. EL FONDO LO HICE YO DESDE CERO, ESTOY MUY ORGULLOSA DE ESO. No utilicé stocks, ninguno <3

Nota: Si te quedas desde lejos mirando un punto fijo en la portada por un rato puedes imaginar y ver un mínimo efecto de bamboleo en las letras del título, como el movimiento del agua, es bello <3

In this round we had to choose an emotion from a list and make a typographical cover representing it.

I chose despair and used it as desperation. The idea was to represent that feeling of desperation when drowning. The letters are distorted to go along with the visual effect that everything has underwater. I MADE THE BACKGROUND MYSELF AND I'M VERY PROUD OF THAT. I used no stocks, not even one <3

Note: If you stay watching a fixed point from afar for a while you can imagine and see a slightly wobble effect in the title letters, like water movement, it's nice <3

~RONDA 5/ROUND 5~

En esta ronda había que escoger dos elementos opuestos de cualquier tipo y ubicarlos en la portada de modo que quedasen divididos en algún punto.

Escogí una pradera y un campo desértico o algo así, más menos como otoño/primavera por los colores pero no es eso. ¿Me explico?

Mi parte fav es definitivamente el diente de león<3 Es tan chiquito y bonito :3

In this round we had to choose two opposites of any kind and locate them in the cover in a way that they were divided in some point.

I chose a meadow and a desert field or something like that, like autumn/spring by the colors but it isn't that, do you understand?

My favorite part is definitely the dandelion <3 It's so small and pretty :3

~RONDA 6/ROUND 6~

En esta ronda había que hacer una portada vectorizada de género fantasía.

Decidí hacer una caverna vista desde el interior hacia el exterior, con todas sus capas y sombras. La corona representa el reino del que habla el título.

Es la primera vez que hago una portada vectorizada, pero con Photoshop porque el Illustrator no lo sé usar aún. Me tardé entre 9 y 12 horas seguidas en hacerlo (loca :'v) y me encanta el resultado <3 Usé pluma, lazo y para el sol marco elíptico, nada más.

In this round we had to make a fantasy vectorized cover.

I decided to make a cavern viewed from the inside to the outside with all its layers, shadows and light. Also, the crown represents the kingdom of the title.

It's my first time with vector covers, but with Photoshop instead of Illustrator because I don't know much about the second one. It took between 9 and 12 hours (crazy :'v) and i love the result <3 I used the pen tool, lazo tool and for the sun elliptical marquee, nothing more.

En la ronda final tuvimos que hacer 2 portadas. Para la primera, debíamos elegir una saga de libros y crear la portada del siguiente libro de ésta, el cual no existe, lo teníamos que imaginar nosotros. Para la segunda, elegir un libro de Wattpad que nos guste mucho o que su portada nos inspire y recrearla.

Escogí una saga que no conocía que se llama "Seven Realms series" porque me gustaba el estilo de las portadas y me sentía capaz de hacer una similar, además de que la tipografía era fácil de hallar y ese era el principal problema de todas las sagas que quería escoger.

Para el libro favorito, escogí "Inestable: Luz de luna" de Aa456d porque lo comencé a leer justo cuando publicaron la ronda y me gusta mucho cómo va, no lo he acabado aún pero merece la pena leerlo, es muy bueno <3 Mucho amor para ti, Gaby <3

No me gustó para nada el resultado de la segunda portada, pero aún así Gaby decidió usarla y le aprecio mucho el gesto<3 Quería que apareciese en la portada la protagonista y bueno, aquel trozo de máscara se supone que representa la inestabilidad emocional (esconder las emociones tras ella). El fondo consta de la luna, un elemento muy relevante en la historia y la torre, el inicio de ésta. 

Al contrario, la primera portada me gustó mucho cómo quedó. La idea era escoger un objeto metálico como los de las otras portadas, por lo que escogí una llave, que además transmite misterio y me encanta eso. El stock de ésta es perfecto porque lleva una corona arriba y eso hace que encaje muy bien con la saga. El fondo, al igual que en el resto de la saga, lleva montañas. Agregué un castillo y un lago para que destacara a su manera. El título lleva la palabra Reign (reinado) porque en todos los demás hay elementos relacionados a la realeza.

In the final round we had to make 2 covers. For the first one, we had to choose a book series and create the cover of the next book, which doesn't exist, we had to imagine it. For the second one, choose a Wattpad book that we liked a lot or that it's cover inspired us and recreate it (the cover).

I chose the Seven Realms series, though I haven't read it and before this I didn't know it existed haha. I like the style of the covers and I thought that I would be able to make a similar cover. Also, the typography was pretty easy to find and that was the main problem of all series that I wanted to choose.

For the favorite book, I chose "Inestable: Luz de luna" by Aa456d (which in english would be "Unstable: moonlight") because I started reading it right when the round was published and I like how it is going, I haven't finished reading it yet but it is worth it, very good book <3 Much of love for you, Gaby<3

I didn't like at all the result of the second cover, but even so Gaby decided to use it and I appreciate a lot the gesture<3 I wanted the main character in the cover and well, that piece of mask supposedly represents the emotional instability (hiding the emotions behind it). The background consists of the moon, a very important element in the story and the tower, the beginning of it.

On the contrary, I like a lot the result of the first cover. The idea was to choose a metallic object like in the other covers, so I chose a key, that also transmits mystery and I love that. The stock image of it is perfect because it has a crown above it and that makes it fit more in the series. The background, like in the rest of the covers, has mountains. I added a castle and a lake so it stands out in its way. The title contains the word Reign because in all the others there are elements relate to royalty.
