4: The First Step

"Huh? A...a gift?" Even though he was my dad, gifts were few and far between from him. Though I suppose it did make sense, with me not being able to see him for a long time and all after I left for mom's today, what with his whole plan to help me become a true hero.

"Yes, Izuku. I'm giving you my quirk. I'll be taking yours beforehand so I don't end up a mindless over-quirked doll. There is three parts to giving you this quirk. First, though, do you accept the power of All for One?"

"Um...are you sure you want me as your successor? I'm...I'm going to become a hero, Dad. You might want to save that for a future villain."

"I haven't been more sure any other time in my life besides having you as my son, Izu." The conviction in his voice was evident to anyone who would've heard him.

"Then..." I took a deep breath. This would help me become a hero, right? And that's why he's giving me his quirk.  Even as a villain, my dad supports me, he has always supported whatever path in life I choose to follow - even if it means being a hero. So...there's really only one answer.

"Yes. I-if you're sure, I accept your power, dad."

"Very good. I should call Inko and let her know you'll be home a little after ten." So he called my mom and lied about having to travel for work for a long period of time and not being sure when he'd return to Japan - his excuse for essentially disappearing off the face of the earth. And with that, she felt bad for him and gave dad permission so long as I was home by 10:30.

"Firstly, lay down on your bed. This will be somewhat painful."

I did as he said, and suddenly a glowing orb of light went onto his hand. My mind immediately supplied information on what quirk it was. It was a facet of Quirk Storage that I discovered in that very moment.

Quirk: Firebreath
User(s): Kokyu Kaen, Dad (All for One)
Abilities: Allows the user to breathe fire on command.
Drawbacks: Sore throat, dehydration if overused, thirst.

And then dad placed the orb on my forehead, and my body slowly absorbed it. As soon as it was absorbed, my dad told me to wait a half-hour for the new quirk to kick in.

We chatted and he explained the rest of the process to me. And thirty minutes passed really quickly once we got talking, and so I laid down yet again.

Receiving the quirk was very easy. There was only a slight ache that had quickly disappeared. The painful part was being stripped of my original quirk.

"Okay, Izu, this is going to be painful. I want you to put this in your mouth so you don't accidentally bite off your tongue." Dad handed me a clean cloth, ripped from one of the shirts I was leaving behind. I bit down and nodded.

And then all I knew was pain. My very core was in pain. Everything hurt. I knew this was going to happen, I just don't know to what extent. It felt like my entire body was being ripped apart and reformed and ripped apart constantly for an entire lifetime yet it was condensed into a single moment of time. My very cells - no, the molecules that make up my cells were being torn and made anew.

And as suddenly as it came, the pain left. I was tranquil and alive and...and I was still me.

I was okay and my world faded into a black abyss.
