17: The Work of a Nurse

The bullying had gotten worse since I got my glasses, but luckily school entrance exams were coming up soon. The U.A. exam was five months away, and training needed to be turned way up - up and into absolute overdrive now. I had already been training quite a bit for a while, especially when I was with Recovery Girl on some afternoons.

Today was a day I was going to visit Recovery Girl as an intern after school. Luckily, Kacchan had already left, and even if he was waiting for me at the front gate...I was leaving through the back gate to avoid him. I honestly thought he'd trail me if he suspected anything was weird and not Deku-like (or - anything that wasn't the usual "go home cause I'm useless" routine).

I looked down at my desk before I left the school. Words had been slowly building up, written and carved into the polished wood by school bullies. Some of the words weren't so bad, some were. Words like useless, Deku, idiot, four-eyes, slut, deaf, bitch, faggot, shithead. Not Kacchan, though. None of it was his handiwork. He probably was keeping any physical evidence that could prove him bullying me happened to a minimum. He was trying to be a "hero", after all.

At one point, I would've thought Kacchan would've made an amazing hero. Now...not so much. Not after working with who I have worked with. Kacchan wouldn't ever be number one, I don't think.

I left trough the back gate, successfully avoiding him. I did this thing where every few days, maybe just one, maybe four, I'd switch up where I left from. There was no pattern and it seemed to mostly work. I had only gotten caught by him four times in the past month.

And then I walked and took a train and made it to U.A., walking down the hall towards Recovery Girl's office. Knocking, I was told to come in.

"Good afternoon, Recovery Girl."

"Oh, hello Izuku. Be especially quiet today, we have a sleeping patient."

"Okay. What do you need me to do today?" I said, softly.

"You're on filing duty for now."

"Yes ma'am."

"Oh hush, you don't need to call me ma'am. Chiyo-sensei works just fine."

"A-alright...Chiyo-sensei."

And I got to work, going through documents and filing them in her cabinet system. Reading the titles of every single one in the pile she gave me, I came across an interesting one.

The Latest Study of an Explosion's Effect On Hearing, the Long-Term Study Thereof
Report #3
Kiku Miru

"Hey...Re-I mean, Chiyo-sensei, what is this?"

She came over to read what I had picked up. "It's a study Kikun started a little over a month ago. He wanted to see what could be done to help you, since his quirk can't do much."

I started tearing up, "th-that...that's so kind..."

"Don't cry, Izuku. We all just want to help you be the best hero you can be."

I burst into more tears. "Th-thank you, Chiyo-sensei...Miru-sensei..." I still remembered luckily, to be quiet.

Suddenly, we heard rustling from the cot the patient was on. I wiped up my tears quickly, grabbing the nearby simple-sugar-filled snacks and a water bottle, as well as painkillers just in case. Chiyo-sensei went to the patient, ready to help them as needed. We both brought over the supplies and she helped the person sit up.

"R-Recovery Girl?"

"Yes. You were pretty reckless, Mirio. You can't do that anymore. You could have easily done far more damage than I could have healed. Even with my help you'll be resting for weeks this time." She scolded him.

"H-here. I brought something to help regain your energy, Mirio-san."

He smiled at me, accepting the food and water. "Thank you! Let me guess...are you a first-year?"

"Ah....no," I said.

Chiyo-sensei interjected. "He's a middle school third year. The intern that some teachers have talked about. Midoriya Izuku."

"Oh, now I remember!" He coughed violently. All we could do was support him and help him through it.

"Eh-what...happened to you, Mirio-san?"

He drank some water. "My quirk had me get stuck in a wall. I lost control for a second, and didn't release it properly, so the wall didn't spit me out. Second-year training is much more difficult than first-year, but I'll definitely ace it next time!" I was enamored already by his quirk and his visible determination, wanting to know more. He seemed a much better hero already than most would ever be. He definitely has the charisma for it. But first...

I closed my eyes, calling heal-glow in a semi-strong capacity. Anything hurt about him would heal. Would be fixed.

And then I brought it to his chest and lungs. I could feel the tissue repairing. The bones mended themselves and his throats washed itself of any roughness.

"Am I right that you'll be going to UA? If you plan on it, then just call me Mirio-senpai!"

I felt somewhat tired, "I do hope to go to UA. There you go, Mirio-senpai, you should be fine now."

"Thanks, Midoriya-sensei."

"I-I'm not a Doctor, Mirio-senpai..."

Recovery Girl laughed a little. "If he says you're all set to go, then believe him. He's just as good as any nurse or doctor with a little experience."

I blushed a little...this was embarrassing. Luckily, Mirio-senpai let me ask a few hundred questions about his quirk before he left, and Chiyo-sensei left me to it.

Mirio Togata now held three pages in my notebook.
