15: The Damage of Quirks
The very next day my mom didn't let me go to school, and instead she told me to rest up for visiting the doctor. She had called ahead while she did her morning routine, apparently. I hadn't told her this at all to keep her from worrying, but when I woke up this morning, the ringing in my ear was softer than before. Or was I just used to it? Either way, there was a very, very muffled version of what I'd normally hear now in my range of hearing.
My eye had worsened too, but only slightly. I guess small explosions do do a lot of damage. I've been lucky until now, not really having much damage done besides burns and small scars.
"Izu! We're leaving in five minutes!" I barely heard her. Was she shouting?
"Okay, mom!" I said back, trying to be quiet. I was almost ready anyways. And so I quickly slipped on my puffy red shoes and followed her out the door. She handed me silencing headphones when we made it outside, saying that she had done some research on quirk related hearing loss from other people, and that I should probably not make it much worse.
"Uh, mom...sorry if I'm talking loudly by the way, but I can't really hear the ringing out of my left ear anymore. It's less intense. I can hear in general though! It's pretty muffled but...I uh...it's a bit too late for headphones?" Mom immediately started crying, apologizing for no reason. She was so stressed and worried about me. She brought the headphones back to the apartment and then we took off towards the station.
The specialist doctor I was going to go see was a good hour or so away by car and we didn't own a car. So we took the train, a predicted hour and twenty two minutes worth of riding. Once we got to the city it was located in, we just had to find the building. Easy enough. It was a sky scraper that towered on as far as I could see when I looked up as we approached it. A large sign was posted out front, letting us know we were in the right place.
We entered the building, my mom handing the business card that Recovery Girl had written on to me. I went up to the reception desk, and smiled at the lady.
"Hello young man, how may I help you?" The receptionist asked warmly.
"M-my name is Midoriya Izuku, and I'm here on recommendation from Recovery Girl," I said as confidently as I could what with not hearing partially, handing her the card. I'm sure I spoke a little too loudly.
"Oh...I'll call up to Miru-sensei to see if he is currently available for consultation. Here's the card, you'll want to show it to him when he makes it down here." He said, handing back the card. "You can stay here as I call up."
"Hello, Miru-sensei?" I heard only one half of the conversation. "There's a boy - Midoriya Izuku - here with a note from Recovery Girl. Do you have the time to talk to him?"
A short pause happened. "Okay, thank you Miru-sensei." The receptionist hung up the phone.
He turned to me. "Miru-sensei will see you now. He doesn't have any appointments until two, so head up to room 3 on floor 78. The elevators are over there," he said pointing.
"Thank you," I bowed politely and made my way to my mom, first and foremost.
"Mom, they told me that the doctor doesn't have any appointments right now, so I can go up. You should probably come too."
And so we both headed towards the elevator, onwards the three minutes to room 3 on floor 78.
Man, this building is huge.
When we made it to floor 78, the first thing I noticed was all the natural light and overly-high ceilings. Floor 78 must be the top of the tower. There was another receptionist desk, so I went to ask about where I was headed.
"Oh, just the furthest room down this hallway. I'll unlock it for you," she said, getting up and out from behind her desk. She approached one of two doors on the floor - the other being the way to the bathrooms - and unlocked it for us.
"Thank you," I said as cheerily as I could. Before mom could make it through the door though, she was asked to wait until Miru-sensei asked for her, since mom wasn't approved by the doctor's security yet. Apparently being recommended here by Recovery Girl was proof enough for me to get through.
I made my way to room three, worried about my mom who looks and probably is extremely anxious for me.
Upon entering, the doctor spoke. "Hello Midoriya-san. My name is Kiku Miru. It's nice to meet you."
"Ah- um...hello." I squeaked out.
"How is your internship with Chiyo going?"
"Interning with Recovery Girl is amazing! I get to learn about important things relating to my quirk and gain more control over an aspect of my quirk..." I started rambling a bit. "Oh...sorry. Almost rambled on there," I admitted sheepishly.
"Please have a seat there, Chiyo told me that you have recently been around small explosives?"
I sat. "Uh...my...friend has an explosion quirk that he'd often use to try to...intimidate people. I've been around his explosions for years."
"So a bully."
"...yea..." I said, under my breath. Probably. And then louder, "W-well, no! Not exactly..." It was really disorienting to not be able to hear myself talk well and caused issues with controlling the volume of my voice.
"I'll heal what I can before we do any testing." The doctor hovered this hands over my eyes first, and then my ears. Very little improved, but a difference with my ears was noticeable.
"Well then, Midoriya-san, let's begin with a simple eye test."
"O-okay." He led me to room number one and we started in on my vision test. Once that was completed, he suggested doing the hearing test and then telling me all of the results at once.
I went with it, after he agreed to let the receptionist know that she should probably calm down my mom a bit and let her know when we'll be done here.
I hope mom isn't too anxious right now...
And onto the hearing test we went. When we finished, I asked if my mom could be in the room to hear results with me, since I'm not 18 yet. Miru-sensei nodded and called the desk. My mom was directed towards room three and we both sat down after she fussed over me for about seven minutes.
"Ah, Midoriya-san...and uh, Midoriya-kun, the results are all here. Midoriya-kun doesn't have 20/20 vision, sadly. His left eye is worse than his right, though. I took the liberty of writing the prescription."
My mom's eyes widened significantly. "A-and...his hearing?" She sounded muffled.
"To start in on Midoriya-kun's hearing, please understand first my quirk. I'm a vision and hearing specialist because I can restore hearing to a certain amount, so long as the damage wasn't cause by a quirk. If it was caused by a quirk, even indirectly, I can only help very slightly, in that I can only heal very short-term damage. For Midoriya-kun, I've done as much as I can as far as healing goes."
My mom nodded at the same time as me.
"I would recommend that Midoriya-kun get hearing aids. He can still hear, and again his left is worse than his right. There seems to be damage to both ears, though."
My mom burst out in tears, hugging me tightly.
"M-mom...I don't think we can afford-"
"Izu, I'll pay for them. I'll work overtime everyday so that you can hear!" She said, what I'm assuming to be loudly.
"Midoriya-san, I talked to Recovery Girl yesterday afternoon. She said she had just sent Midoriya-kun home at the time," my mom wiped up her tears a little bit, releasing me from her death grip. "Recovery Girl said that I should bring her intern up to top shape and that she would take on any debt needed. His glasses and hearing aids are payed for, courtesy of Recovery Girl."
Mom started to cry more than before, but this time tears of joy and thankfulness towards Recovery Girl. I can't say that I didn't also cry for similar reasons.
"Th-thank you, Miru-sensei, thank you!" My mom shook his hand while still crying.
"Ah- to almost time for my next appointment. Please check in with the desk on this floor on your way out." He handed my mom an envelope labeled 'Midoriya Izuku, Eyeglass prescription and Hearing Aid recommendation.'"
I bowed. "Thank you Miru-sensei."
"Don't thank me, Midoriya. Thank your tutor."
My mom and I checked out through the desk on floor 78 and headed out to find me a pair of glasses and then return the next day - though, only to get the process started for a set of hearing aids.
