The Call

Dean swears that his phone loved to go off during work. Thankfully, he was sitting with Rufus, having a break from working on a fritzy engine. His phone went off, buzzing against his leg, and he fished it out, staring at the number with a frown.

"Castiel is calling me." Dean commented, worry furrowing his brows as he pressed talk. Rufus grew quiet, and he could hear murmuring from other coworkers reaching his ears. It was becoming clear that his life was becoming like a soap opera to them.

"Hello? Dean said, feeling his heart rush just slightly with panic. He didn't know what this could mean, but it terrified him.

"Dean! Guess what?" Castiel said, his voice excited and putting Dean at ease. Dean let out a soft sight of relief, relaxing back into his chair and smiling gently at the teen's obvious happiness.

"What?" Dean asked, playing along with Castiel's little game. He could hear the rumble of a car in the back of the workshop but ignored, focusing solely on his boyfriend.

"They said I was cancer free today!" Castiel said, such a brightness in his voice that it floored Dean. His face lit up, and that smile turned into a huge grin as he sat up straighter.

"Oh my God, Cas. That's great news!" Dean said brightly, pretending not to notice the curiosity in Rufus's gaze.

"I made it, Dean. I really made it." Castiel said, sniffing almost like the thought was beginning to make him cry, "I'm home now, so I'll talk to you later okay?"

"Yeah, I'll see you later." Dean said softly, rubbing his arm subconsciously as he hung up, looking over at Rufus when he finished. He let out a laugh, feeling amazement run through his chest at the thought.

"Castiel's cancer free." Dean said, a weight flying off his shoulder that he didn't even realize was there as he let the realization sink in. Castiel would be okay, and he couldn't imagine a better feeling.

"Congratulations, Dean." Rufus said, a gruff smile twisting his features. Dean nodded, buzzing with excitement. He heard a few more congratulations before Rufus cut back in, catching his attention.

"Do you want to go now? I think letting you off early one more day won't kill us." Rufus offered, a knowing look in his eyes. Dean flushed, ducking his head and nodded, rubbing the back of his neck.

"I swear, I will work a week next week." Dean promised, wrinkling his nose at the thought. Rufus laughed, waving his hand in a dismissing manner towards the door.

"Go, we'll work something out later." Rufus replied, amusement in his expression as Dean nodded again, nearly dashing from the shop and heading to his car.

Dean reached the Novak door with a smile, holding a warm pie in his hands as he knocked. He had stopped at a nearby bakery, getting some pecan pie to celebrate with Castiel. Chuck answered the door, a twinkle in his eyes that had never been there before.

"Dean, come in." Chuck said, a grin on his face as he stepped to the side. Dean stepped into the house, feeling cool air wash over his skin and making him sigh appreciatively compared to the hot air outside.

"Where's Cas?" Dean asked, setting the pie on the counter. He saw Gabriel skip in, pausing at the pie and sniffing at with a eager look before grabbing a cup, getting some water and skipping back out. Even as happy as Gabriel always was, Dean had never seen him that happy in his life.

"He's in his room. Why don't you go surprise him?" Chuck said, looking at the pie and shaking his head with a smile. "I'll get the pie ready. Your brother and Bobby are coming over as well."

"Will do." Dean replied before walking out of the kitchen and scaling up the stairs. He remained as quiet as possible, slipping to Castiel's room and watching him through the open door.

Castiel was getting dressed, looking much better than when Dean had met him, and although he wasn't quite to his normal state, he was filling out his clothes better, and his skin seemed healthier and had more color. Dean couldn't help but smile, watching him a minute before finally knocking and catching his boyfriend's attention.

"Hey." Dean said, walking towards the surprised Castiel with a smile. The teen grinned in response after a moment, wrapping his arms around Dean and pulling him into a hug.

"I'm okay, Dean. I'm  okay." Castiel breathed into Dean's chest, clutching onto him like he was a life line. Dean held him close, resting his cheek on Castiel's bandana, a relaxed smile on his face.

"I knew you would be." Dean replied, pulling away and kissing Castiel gently. The teen smiled, taking Dean's hand and linking it with his and leading him over to the bed to sit.

"What are you doing here so early?" Castiel asked, laying back on the bed with a soft sigh. "I thought you still had a few more hours of work left."

"Rufus let me off to come see you. Guess he knew I wouldn't get any work done with my thoughts stuck on you." Dean replied, laying down beside him and staring up at the ceiling. Castiel shifted closer, snuggling into Dean's side tentatively.

"I'm glad you're here." Castiel said softly, resting his head on Dean's shoulder. Dean turned his head, feeling his heart rush as he stared at Castiel, biting his lip as nerves came through.

"Of course I'm here. I love you, you moron." Dean snorted, trying not to sound as nervous as he felt. Obviously, his manly way of saying it didn't affect Castiel in anyway, as the boy's face lit up and he leaned closer, letting out a soft laugh.

"I love you too." Castiel said, pecking his lips before sitting up. Dean couldn't help but grin, mimicking him before he stood, taking Castiel's hand and pulling him up.

"Come on, let's go eat some pie."
