Chapter 21 - Jennifer Problems

Mesilande above 👆

***************

'Cheryl?' asked Mesilande as she entered my room. My mom was about to give me a bite of the stinky porridge she made for me. Hey, i loved my mom's cooking skills, just that i hated porridge.

'Yeah?' i asked. She smiled, 'Alice is up.' I shrieked, 'Let's go meet her!' i said, i was already on my wheel chair because Mesilande was going to take me for a walk so i just sat on my wheel chair because it wasn't that hard to get up from it like it was from the bed. I started turning the wheels but they wouldn't move. I looked back to my mom giving me a flat face and holding my wheel chair back. 'MOM?' i asked.

'Finish this first.' I groaned and ate it all up in ten minutes. i quickly wiped my face, and raced out of my door. 'I swear i've never seen her so un-calm. My daughter is a contained and calm person, i think the accident has somehow effected her brain in a wrong way. She has become very emotional and expressive,' i heard mom say from the room and stopped. Mesilande laughed. 'Oh, don't worry. She just went through a bad time. She'll get better, and don't you think it's nicer now that she is letting loose and being more active? I think she is a wonderful girl,' said Mesilande.

'Yeah,' mom replied, 'Not that i don't love her this way......' i didn't stop to hear further and moved on. I was eavesdropping, which is a bad habit. Although i wanted to hear what else they were talking about, and my brain even tried to bribe me, you can stay, remember you're letting loose?  Shut up brain, i'm going to meet Alice.

'Alice!' i said entering the room. 'Cheryl?' she asked in a low voice, looking at me from her bed, i nodded. She was still weak so her voice was low but i could still hear the happiness. 'How are you feeling now?' i asked going closer. 'Much better,' she said in the same hoarse voice. It was Sunday, and it had almost been a week since we had come into the hospital. Phew, tough thing. I had been trying to walk from two days, and now I was able to get on the wheelchair by myself.

'Oh my God, I missed you,' I said and went forward to hug her. She smiled widely, but I retreated back as I saw the doctor beside her giving me a threatening look. I didn't want to hurt her in any way so I just held her hand slowly.

'I missed you too,' she said. 'Alice? Do you remember me telling you about....' I asked her but she cut me off.

'Telling me about you letting loose and me making a very good decision of staying like the book you were reading. Is that so?' she completed my sentence as I stared at her bewildered.

'Yes!' I said.

'Oh Gosh, I thought I was dreaming. Nevertheless, I was in a beautiful place with flowers where I could just hear your voice,' she said weirdly.

'You must be dreaming,' I told her smiling.

'No. No, it was real!' she tried.

'Okay, I believe you,' I said. Along with the good girl of the group, I tended to be the mom as I broke no rules and told everyone to abide by them too. And it wasn't just me who believed every thing anyone from our group said, everyone of us did the same. That was rule one, trust every single group member. Trust, is important.

'Yay,' she said in a low voice making me laugh. She hissed, exactly what was happening with me in the early days. 'Don't,' I told her.

She nodded and we talked for a lot of time, with me saying the most of it as the doctor disallowed her to talk so much. I told her about my date and she was over the moon about it.

'When is that jerk taking you out?' she asked.

'I don't really know, and hey, he's not a jerk anymore.'

'Oh really?' she asked wiggling her eye brows.

'You cannot wiggle them Alice. And yes, really,' I said smiling shyly, 'I think he is amazing.'

'Ummhmm,' she said sassily.

'Stop,' I warned and she laughed.

Just then, Ashley entered the room. With her eyes swollen.

'What happened to you?' I asked as she sobbed and I worriedly grabbed a stool and made her sit on it.

'Sam....' she said and I frowned, 'What happened to him?'

'He cheated on me!' she said wiping a stray tear, 'I found him with another girl in Starbucks yesterday. That a**hole.' Her tone turned angry from sad and I suddenly felt my heart swell up from pride.

'When?' I asked anyway bottling up my emotions inside and being a normal friend after her friend's breakup.

'Yesterday, I was walking down near Starbucks and saw him inside. I went inside to find him with another girl! I slapped him and pushed him, he tripped over his feet and fell down. Then I kicked his butt. Stiffany saw this and left. She didn't even know he was dating me.'

'Serves him right. He didn't even deserve you,' said Alice and I nodded.

'Yes, he never did. I threw his bracelet at him and stormed off after kicking him one last time.'

'Well, then what's the crying about?' said Bella entering the room and making her way towards us.

'Right, we should celebrate,' I said, 'Ashley got rid of a massive jerk and a completely vain person from her life.'

'That's where the bad part comes in,' said Ashley, 'When I got home, mom was totally pissed off when we started arguing about my modelling job.'

Now this had got to another level, I could almost expect her to say that she was skipping high school to model for her mom's brand. But then again, Ashley's not exactly the type who'd easily listen to her mom. Unlike me, she was the total rebel.

'So I just told her that whatever she said, I am becoming an engineer no matter what. I love computers, and that's it. I told her I wasn't quitting the modelling and I'll still do it but my main focus would be to be an engineer.'

I nodded for her to continue, 'She said I won't be able to put my attention towards the model job. This got me really furious,' also, Ashley wasn't really the one keeping her anger inside herself either, 'I yelled and told her that I didn't want to keep my main focus on her stupid job either. This got her angry and ......'

'And?' I asked her getting impatient by ever second.

'And she threw me out of the house,' she stated sobbing. Ashley was dramatic and emotional but this really was an issue. Ashley should've been more contained, but so should have her mom. Like mom, like daughter.

'Oh .....wait.....so....' I couldn't form the right words in my mind and we all were just left staring at her in a not-so-attractive manner.

'So, I am officially homeless now,' she stated.

Bella stifled out a short chuckle and I stared at her for doing the least suitable thing to do. 'Bella, seriously?' asked Alice.

'Sorry,' she said, 'Homeless sounded funny.'

Ashley narrowed her eyes at her, and I shook my head. 'Ashley, you're not homeless, you can stay at ours until your mom cools down.'

'Nuh uh, I'm finding myself a permanent abode. I'm not going back in that house.' Here came the angry young rebel we all know.

'Ashley, you'll have to,' tried Alice softly, 'Your mom obviously didn't know you had a break up. Otherwise she would've sympathized.'

'Right,' she said sarcastically, 'I don't think so.'

I gave her hand a squeeze and she smiled a bit, 'So then, where do I go now?'

'You can stay at my house,' I said but she vigorously shook her head, 'No way. Your mom's already taking trouble. You're in the hospital. Of course I'm not being an increase in that. I'll ask Dawn if I can stay at hers or maybe Samantha.'

I nodded, 'But you won't be trouble so if you ever feel like it, you're welcome at my place.'

'Thanks,' she said, 'I love you guys.'

'So who's up for the celebration?' Bella tried again but unfortunately, another distraction made it's way towards us. Someone barged right through the doors, 'Alice my baby!'

Abigail Peters, formerly Abigail Ace, someone I know from Alice's past, someone I don't like, someone I render as being the most irresponsible person in the world was currently running through the door inside. I disliked her and that had a reason, she was never there when her daughter most needed her. When she was fighting the battle of life and death. When she was facing the mental, verbal and physical torture every day she woke up.

'Mom?' Alice choked out and I felt my heart break at the pain she had in it by the sight of her. Instantly, I felt like standing in her way not letting her meet her daughter when things were finally fitting into place without her. When her empty needed space was finally not screaming for her help and her return. When Alice was finally smiling from her heart and feeling safe.

'Stop,' Alice said snapping me out of my thoughts. I looked at her to find tears brimming in her eyes, holding in them a well defined sorrow but her face firm and cold in expression.

'Honey, I....' Abigail started but Alice cut her off, 'I don't want to talk to you, mom.' She looked away out the window, breaking eye contact with her mom at the front of the room. I stared at her mom, whose lower lip was quivering and I knew she would start to cry anytime.

But before that Ashley stood up and directed her out of the room before she worsened the heart ache she created for her daughter. She wordlessly obeyed Ashley and went out of the room. Probably the only right thing I had ever witnessed her doing for her daughter. If she wanted to talk and set things up, now was simply not the time. Alice needed time to recover from everything before she gave her mother a second chance.

I turned my wheels to get near to Alice and hugged her bending down. She hugged me back working really hard causing me to break it so she won't trouble herself more to raise her hand and return the hug. It was painful for her.

Things normalised after Bella pulled a few of her heart lifting jokes but I could still feel the weight in the room as Alice managed to laugh. Things were taking a huge turn in her life. And now that I think about it, so were they in mine.

Grace, a vowed cat lady for life, just got a date. I just got a date, I unlike myself fought Alice's dad and ended up in the hospital. Ashley got kicked out of her house and broke up with what she told everyone to be a life long soulmate. So not just me, some of us.

'So don't you think you should come back to your room now, Cheryl?' asked Mesilande appearing behind my wheel chair, 'Besides your dad is here to visit you. He's been here a couple of time but,' she ruffled my hair, 'This sleepyhead has been asleep everytime.' I laughed.

'So I'll leave then, hmm?' I told Alice. I had been here for an hour and that is enough for a patient brought in a week ago with several damaged tissues, a broken bone and an injured state of mind. Okay, maybe I was over exaggerating. It was enough for Alice to be occupied in talking to me after she had just woken up from unconsciousness.

'Yes, do come tomorrow, okay?' she said and I nodded, smiling.

'Dad!' I squealed, as I caught sight of him after I entered my room.

'Princess! How are you?' he said kneeling down before me as I came next to my bed.

'Great now that you're here,' I said and smiled. He laughed soulfully and his eyes glistened with tears once he took a good look at me. 'Dad?' I asked concerned, 'Are you crying?'

'I'll leave you two alone,' said mom and Mesilande nodded. They both left and I wiped away the tear that had just dropped down his eye. 'I'm a terrible daddy, ain't I?'

'Dad, no! You're not. You're my superhero dad and not at all terrible okay?' I told him and he shook his head.

'You say that because you're my amazing Supergirl daughter. I haven't been there for you guys for so long.'

'Dad,' I said in a warning tone but when he didn't look up still, I tried again in a softer voice, 'Dad? I know you feel bad about me stuck in the hospital but you don't have to worry anymore because I'm all good now. It was just a bad time for all of us. You fulfill all your responsibilities and give me everything I'll ever need or want. I love being your daughter, know that?

'And don't you ever doubt your awesomeness once more. You are ah-may-zing. And I love you.'

'Love you too,' he said and stood up to kiss my forehead, 'I brought your sisters along too because they wanted to meet you, more like dying to meet you. Zabella just demanded candy so Harmony stayed back to buy her some.'

'My wonderful little sister who's getting spoilt,' I laughed.

'Your mom won't let her be spoilt you know, she just takes advantage of her absence when she can,' he said and I laughed. He got a point there.

Just then, Zabella barged into the room with a bag of candies in her hand and Harmony trailed behind calmer than the fringe cut haired brunette running towards me ready to pounce. But like the superhero he is, my dad held her back before she could jump on me for a hug and I sat there terrified.

Harmony laughed as Zabella kicked the air shrieking. She laughed when my dad flipped her over his head and gave her a short piggy back ride and placed her down carefully when she finally calmed down a bit.

'Hey Cherry,' Harmony greeted me and hugged me, 'Come home soon please?'

'Just a week Har,' I reminded her. She nodded and smiled at me. Mom entered soon after and we decided to watch a movie together. 'Home Alone' it had to be. One of our favourite family movies apart from the ones we watched every year and enjoyed just as much at Christmas before New year's.

Although I preferred we watch something horror, because Halloween was very near but my mom dismissed my choice saying, 'No Cheryl, the other patients will be disturbed of you scream midway the movie and we don't want that. Also, there is Zabella.' I groaned inwardly but knew she was right so I agreed.

My mom stayed with me while dad and my sisters went to have McDonald's. My mom thought I'd be sad but I was happy they weren't forbidding fun on them just because I was in the hospital. That would not be something I like. Being a tension.

They came back with Mcflurry for me which I had happily whilst we watched a movie. The movie was done by ten and my mom demanded me to sleep. She made us start the movie early so that I could sleep just after and it won't effect my routine.

The next whole week passed by boringly and dreadfully. Although my daily walking sessions in the great old outsides were a wonderful break from my never ending session of staring at the roof, I also enjoyed a maximum of one hour with Alice everyday. I would narrate to her the story of 'If I Stay' and at my last day in the hospital, I was done with the whole book. The protagonist had finally chosen to stay and I cried happy tears with Alice as I read her the last page.

I always liked books like these, filled with drama, romance and humor all over them but happy ending at the end. Well, except of Thirteen Reasons Why. That book was the ultimate definition of depressing and stressful, not to mention heartbreaking. But I still liked it. When I first read it, I couldn't get my eyes off it and spent one whole day finishing the book. And spent another day crying about it.

Everyone else also visited us in the hospital but they won't stay for very long except Bella and Zayn for me and Aaron for Alice.

I left for home after bidding Alice and Mesilande a goodbye and promising Alice that I would visit everyday in the three days left for her to be in here. Yes, they were keeping her here for longer. She didn't have regular walking sessions as her legs weren't hurt but she was obviously more injured than I was.

I didn't want to think of the past and shrugged off every thought that came to me about the night of two weeks ago and concentrated on coping up with the loss at school, completing homework and assignments and listening to lectures that Bella had been sweet enough to record for me through any of the friends that shared classes with me.

I quickly made up to all the work by the time Alice was to come home, it wasn't all that difficult. Another advantage of being a nerd with good friends. Also, I prepared for the return of Alice on the day before Halloween.

I was extremely excited about Halloween especially, when it was a Friday and my date with Zayn was right after it. He informed me about the date just after I came back and although I pleaded and begged for him to tell me, he didn't let me in for what he was planning. If you would ask me, I am not the best person at giving surprises. I end up revealing the surprise before it's due to happen and/or ruining it by making a silly management mistake. Exactly why I didn't take business management in high school, because I knew I won't be worthy of being called a nerd after that wrong decision. I would flunk at it. Or maybe I would actually learn, but I wasn't going to take the risk, right?

I stared at the clock which just struck four, 'She was going to come on three fifty five, mom!' I said and she looked at me weirdly.

'Cheryl, it's okay. It's just five minutes past that. Calm your nerves down,' she said.

'Okay,' I groaned crashing on the couch with the bowl of ice cream in my hand. I had started school the day before and had just completed all my homework. I know, it wasn't even two hours whole before I returned from school but I wanted to be free before Alice returned. I had taken her costume as she allowed me to without telling her. It was the first time I was managing to keep a surprise to myself, and boy was I getting impatient.

Okay, five more seconds and I would be bursting with impatience. I counted down, five .....four...three.....two but then the bell rung.

I ran towards the door and flung it open in hope of seeing Alice standing outside with a smile plastered on her face but instead I found the least expected person standing there.

Jennifer.

'Weren't you in Montreal?' I asked her not bothering to say a 'hi'.

'I came back,' she answered wearing a bored expression like I was stupid. Okay, I admit that was a stupid question. Of course she came back, exactly the reason why she stood before me breathing in the cold air of Toronto.

'Ummm. Yeah, I meant to say......that what are you doing here?' I replied sheepishly and she watched me with the same expression that irritated me.

'My mom send me here to ask how you're doing. She found out you injured yourself again because of your stupid friend who can't handle her issues herself. Who was living with you. What was her name? Allison?' I didn't hear any further to let more anger boil up inside me.

'Alice it is. And shut up Jennifer, mind your own business. You should have nothing to do with what I did or who is staying at my home. And don't you dare say any single thing about Alice or any of my friends. At least she isn't a bitchy brat like you and it's actually nice having her around,' I snapped back. She opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out as she stared at me.

'Cheryl, who is it?' came my mom's voice from the lounge.

'It's Jennifer,' I yelled back fake sweetly and smirked at her dumb face. She rolled her eyes, and managed to say, 'Get away, nerd,' she pushed her way through and walked into my house. How could someone even be that confident doing something like that.

I closed the door after she walked inside and rolled my eyes at the voices of her greeting my mom with the sick sweetness I tried to pull off before. Key word: tried. I can't be sweet when I don't want to. Although such situations only come seldom, but when they do, I am the last person someone would expect to put a sweet face on. Sure, I adjust but not with someone like Jennifer who I thought I hate with all my guts.

'Oh, Aunt Sophia, how I missed your wonderful corn soup all these years and from the time I have arrived here I have been waiting for winter to have some!' she said again. Fake.

'Oh honey, you remember? Wow. I'm making some right now, you can have it,' my mom replied with her usual lovely tone that came with a kind personality. In this case that came with being oblivious of what is happening between her daughter and the person she's being so nice to.

I know I over reacted but i said it anyway, 'Mom, it's for Alice!' I said irritated and raising my hands up in the air.

'Cheryl, there is enough of it for a whole household. Jennifer's little appetite isn't going to put a dent in it's source of the country,' she joked but I could feel the slight glare I was getting from the corner of her eye.

Jennifer laughed, 'How do you even know I have a small appetite?' she said, 'After all these years, my habits could've changed you know.'

'Nuh uh, Aunt Diana makes wonderfully good food to make your appetite bigger anytime in life. Note the heavy sarcasm.' Okay, so I just insulted my Aunt's cooking skills. That wasn't nice of me.

'Cheryl!' my mom glared at me and i laughed, knowing how to cover my mistake up, 'Sorry, sorry, I was just joking,' I said coolly, pulling a glass of water together for myself. 'Would you like water, Jennifer?' I asked her, 'I think you just drank a really hot sip of the soup.'

She looked at me, her eyes narrowing. Of course she noticed I was trying my best to make her pissed off. So that she would loose her control and show how low she can stoop, how much of a nice person she really is. But she wasn't the one you would expect to back out easy either. If I was trying to piss her off, she was going to try her best to play it cool and fake it like she was currently doing it.

'Oh yes please,' she said, 'You guessed it right.'

'Here,' I smiled as I passed the glass of water to her but accidentally spilled it all over her  sweater. Note the heavy sarcasm for real now.

'Oh my gosh, I am so incredibly sorry,' I said trying my best to fake my dialogues in an expert way.

I could almost see the fumes from her ears and it took me every little amount of self control not to burst out laughing. 'That is okay,' she said through gritted teeth, forcing out a smile as she stood up. 'I'll be back,' she said and stood up. I smiled victoriously, but stopped when I saw my mom glaring at me.

'Jenny, honey wait,' she said, 'You can go borrow something from Cheryl.'

Congratulations, Cheryl, for having the most amazing mother on Earth.

I love her but sometimes she just acts so oblivious to everything that she almost gets un- understanding. If that's even a word.

'Oh, okay,' Jennifer turned back around and made her way towards me smirking as my mom followed behind. Oh, she definitely had something in mind, I could smell the bitter aroma of her best revenge recipe from inside her brain.

I sighed, and stomped to my room and Jennifer trailed behind me in the grace she pulled off just right. Why wasn't Alice here till now?
