Chapter 6 The Cure

(Later)

Janet and Lee were standing outside on the front porch with some coffee in their hands. They were waiting for Rina and Ron to come back from their little "date" and they were starting to get worried about the two.

"Where are they? Ugh they should've been back by now." Lee said.

"Yeah you wonder if they're alright?" Janet asked.

"I'm sure their fine Rina is a tough girl, and Ron he's... um well he can hold his own." Lee explained.

"Yeah but still with this situation going on I'm just really worried about them, Ron's like a brother to us and while we haven't known Rina for long she's a really nice girl." Janet explained.

"Yeah she is." Lee agreed.

"Hey Janet, Lee wanna play some basketball?" Jack asked.

"Huh? Oh no, but thanks for the offer we're just waiting for Ron and Rina to get back." Janet explained.

"And besides I'm no good at basketball." Lee said.

"Oh you don't have to be good to have fun, you can play for fun as well." Chris explained.

"Hey I'll play basketball with you two!" Beth said while rushing out of the house.

"Really? Awesome, let's go Beth." Jack said.

"Yeah lets! And Um, what's basketball?" Beth asked.

"Oh well let me lay it all down for you, me and my bro here played it a lot back at our school along with soccer, baseball, football... basically any sport that involved running." Jack explained.

"Yeah and it's good that we did because with this situation you're gonna need to be a fast runner or there won't be a tomorrow for you." Chris commented.

"Yeah I know, and please teach me how to play all those spots you two played!" Beth exclaimed excitedly.

"Okay we might not be able to teach you all of them but we'll do what we can." Jack said.

"Aww thanks Jack, I can't wait to try them out!" Beth exclaimed excitedly.

Jack and Chris smiled and took Beth to an open area within the fence to teach her how to play basketball. Janet and Lee continued to watch out for Rina's car for another few minutes. They were starting to get even more worried about them till they saw headlights coming up to the house. The two looked closer and saw that it was Rina's car, they were relieved to see them again. Lee then got up to open the gate while Janet left to go tell the rest of the group that Rina and Ron were back.

However when Lee got a closer look at the driver his face turned to horror as he noticed the man in the car. He then hesitated to open the door, but he saw Ron sticking his head out of the window and waving at him. Despite his fear he opened the gate and let them in, when the car got inside Ron then got out of the car carrying Rina in his arms.

"What the? Ron what happened to Rina?" Lee asked, concerned.

"She started feeling sick while we were out there so she thought it'd be a good idea for us to get back to the house." Ron explained.

"Oh well you should take her to her room and let her rest." Lee suggested.

"I was already planning on doing that." Ron said before heading inside and taking Rina to her room.

Lee sighed and hoped that Rina would get better. John then got out of the car himself and Lee stepped to the side a bit looking tense. John noticed how Lee was looking at him and was confused by his reaction.

"Hey kiddo what's wrong?" John asked.

"Hey Don't act like you don't know me." Lee said sternly.

"And what do you mean by that?" John asked.

"Oh come-on you know me and I know you Carter Tennermen. I know that you're a convicted serial killer and rapist!" Lee explained while glaring at him.

'What?! Fuck! Of all humans I could shape shift into why did it have to be a criminal?' Seven asked himself.

"You might be acting all casual right now, but I'm keeping my eyes on you! So I better not catch you trying to hurt anyone here. I won't hesitate a second to tell everyone here about you. And Rina said that if anyone here proves to be a liability to the group then they'll be kicked out indefinitely!" Lee explained sternly before heading back inside.

'Shit, this is going to be harder than I thought. But becoming the strongest and greatest ruler of the whole world will be worth the trouble once I take out eight and take her virus.' Seven thought to himself before going inside as well.

(Meanwhile with Ron)

Ron was laying Rina down on her bed and keeping an eye on her as she slept.

"Ugh R-Ron are you there?" Rina asked weakly.

"Yes I'm here, what do you need, Rina?" Ron asked while holding Rina's hand.

"H-hungry, I'm so hungry." Rina said even weaker.

"Oh, Hang on, I'll be back with some food." Ron said before rushing upstairs.

When he got to the top he bumped right into Beth who had a bag in her hands.

"Oh Hey Beth what's up?" Ron asked.

"Well I saw you all come home so I wanted to know how Rina was doing, as I saw you holding her." Beth explained.

"Oh yeah she's fine, she just got a bit sick, and hungry so I'm gonna get her some food." Ron explained before heading to the kitchen.

When Beth heard that she knew what was going on at once, she also knew that Rina needed more than just normal food.

"It's moving along faster than I thought it would, thankfully I got just what Rina needs." Beth said before running down the stairs.

When Beth got down to Rina's room she saw that Rina was writhing around in her bed in what looked to be agonizing pain. She also saw that red veins were bulging out of half of her body where her red eye was.

"Hey sis I have something for you!" Beth called out.

Rina then sat up on her bed and looked right at Beth, and she backed up a bit when she saw Rina's face. Red vents were bulging out of her face and Beth could see them pulsing, her red eye was also wide open, and was also bulging out. She was also gritting her teeth very hard, saliva was also dripping out of her mouth.

'Okay it's waking up a lot faster than I thought, I better feed her before she starts going crazy.' Beth thought to herself.

She then started digging around in a bag she had and pulled out a chunk of flesh she pulled off of a zombie the night before. When Rina saw it she ran up to Beth, ripped the zombie flesh out of her hand, and shoved it into her mouth. Beth just stood there and watched Rina eat the flesh till it was all gone.

Once she was done eating Rina felt dizzy and passed out, Beth thankfully was able to catch her and put her back in her bed. Once Rina was in bed Beth grabbed some tissues from the table next to Rina's bed and wiped the blood off of Rina's face.

"Okay the first day is the worst, I know this well, but thankfully tomorrow will be much better. Okay you'll have an increase in appetite, but it'll be alright." Beth said.

Once Beth was done cleaning up Rina's face she sat on the bed and continued watching her for a while. As time passed the red veins on Rina's face and body faded away and were soon gone entirely. Beth sighed relieved before lying down herself and falling asleep.

(With Janet)

Janet was standing next to one of the three support beams in the house. She was observing it with a cup of juice in her hands. Lee then came up to her and asked

"Hey Love, are you okay?" Lee asked, Janet turned around to see Lee walking up to her with a concerned look on his face.

"Yeah I'm fine but I'm just worried about this house, it's pretty old and these support beams are pretty old and unstable." Janet explained.

"Huh? I didn't notice that until now. They won't collapse will they?" Lee asked.

"Not without any help, if there's serious trauma done to them all then the house will cave in on itself. If that happens then there goes our safe haven and we're gonna have to find another place to hunker down till this is all over." Janet explained.

"Well let's just hope that it doesn't come to that, cause this house might as well be the safest place for anyone to be during the apocalypse." Lee explained.

"Yeah but I feel like we should also address the elephant in the room." Janet said while looking at her boyfriend.

"And that is?" Lee asked.

"The murder and rapist Carter Tennermen is in the Fucking house!" Janet exclaimed angrily.

"Wait, how do you know that!?" Lee asked, surprised and confused.

"Lee, you forget that my parents are reporters. They did a report on his crimes and I was able to listen to them talk about it as the walls in our house were thin as hell." Janet explained.

"Oh right, well I don't know what we should do, yeah he's a criminal but if we just left him out there to die then we'd be just as bad as him." Lee explained.

"Well we can't just let him walk around the house freely as he could do who knows what to Beth, Lucy, and Boy." Janet explained.

"Why do you say only them? What about the others?" Lee asked.

"Well Beth is autistic and she's admitted that she's pretty oblivious so I'm worried he might take advantage of that, Lucy and Boy are young and he's a big strong guy so he could easily overpower them." Janet explained.

"Ah yeah that makes sense. So I guess we should inform the others." Lee said.

"Alright I'll go out and tell the twins you tell the others inside." Janet said.

"Will do Love." Lee said before kissing Janet on the forehead and going to find the others.

Janet went outside and saw the twins standing on the porch looking out onto what was left of their town.

"Hey Boys you two alright?" Janet asked.

"Yeah it's just that we're worried about our mom." Chris explained.

"Aren't we all worried about our families?" Janet said.

"Yeah, but our mom can't run as she's wheelchair bound." Jack explained.

"Wait what?" Janet asked.

"A few years back the three of us were heading home after going out to eat, when a drunk driver slammed into our car. While me and Jack just suffered a few broken bones mom had her lower body badly damaged. After she got out of the hospital she was told that her legs were forever paralyzed and she'd have to use a wheelchair for the rest of her life." Chris explained.

"Yeah life kinda became a bit harder for us after that as Mom was single, and she ended up losing her job because of her being wheelchair bound. Thankfully a relative of ours was able to give her a well paying job so she could support all three of us." Jack explained.

"I see so you two are worried about her because she can't run due to her condition?" Janet asked.

"Yeah we are." Jack said.

"...Hey guys I know you both are worried about your mom hell I'm worried sick about mine as she's a short woman and isn't very fast." Janet explained.

"Well all we can do is hope that they're alright and will only get out of this with a few injuries." Chris said.

"Yeah... well I also came out here to tell you boys something about the new guy Ron and Rina brought home with them." Janet said.

"What's that J?" Jack asked.

Janet then told them about their guest and after she was done explaining Jack screamed "WHAT?!"

It was so loud that some birds flew away from the trees they were in.

(Meanwhile somewhere else)

A policeman was running through the streets with a couple, who was carrying a woman. He then stopped them all at a corner, before looking around with his gun drawn. He saw about twelve or more zombies wandering around the streets, somewhere banging their heads on lamp posts, while others were just wandering around aimlessly.

"Too many zombies for me to take on alone. There's twelve of them and I don't have enough bullets to take them on." the policeman explained.

"Carter we have to do something!" The woman exclaimed.

"Yeah I need to get another wheelchair so you all don't have to carry me, and after that we need to find our children!" The other woman explained.

"Cassey, Mandy, I know you're all worried about your children, hell I'm worried about my son! But we need to figure out how to get past all those zombies and get into the hospital." Carter explained.

"Hmm Hey Mr. Carter, I have an idea on how we can get past them!" the other man said.

"Explain to James that any idea is better than no idea in this situation." Carter explained.

"Well when Cassey here was in labor I took a short cut to the hospital through a parking garage that goes into both the mall and hospital." James explained.

"Hmm Okay, but let's be careful when going through there as the last thing we need is to be running from a horde of zombies with a woman who can't even walk." Carter explained.

Mandy looked down in shame of her condition as she felt like it made her a burden to the group.

"Hey Mandy don't worry, it's not your fault you can't walk, remember you were in an accident that's the reason you're unable to walk." Cassey said, trying to help Mandy feel better about her situation.

"Thanks but still I wish that I could walk on my own then you all wouldn't have to worry about me." Mandy explained.

"Hey, let's not worry about that right now. Let's go to the hospital, get a wheelchair for Mandy, and go find our kids!" Carter exclaimed.

Everyone nodded and James started leading them to the parking lot he was talking about. While Cassey carried Mandy on her back which was a lot easier to do and had her wishing they did that from the start.

"Hey guys thanks for helping me when we first met, if it wasn't for you three I possibly would have been as good as dead." Mandy said, expressing her gratitude.

"Hey you would've done the same for us Mandy, and we gotta save as many people as we can in a crisis like this. The more numbers we have the more likely humanity is to survive this outbreak." Carter explained.

"I know... I really hope my son's are alright." Mandy said worried sick about her kids.

"I'm sure they're fine, you said you had an older brother who's a survivalist right?" Cassey asked.

"Yeah I do." Mandy answered.

"Then if your sons are smart they'll possibly go to him and stay there where it's safe." Cassey explained.

"Yeah and I think we should look for your kids there once we get what we need from here." Carter explained.

Mandy nodded and stayed quiet as they went into the parking lot in order to prevent her voice from echoing and therefore catching the attention of any zombies. James quietly led everyone through the parking lot and into the entrance of the hospital. When they got in they were hit with the smell of rotting flesh. It was so powerful that they all tried their hardest not to gag and throw up.

"Ugh these things smell absolutely disgusting!" Cassey exclaimed.

"I know hon, ugh! I really hope that whatever this is we'll find a way to stop it." James explained.

"Same here, but right now we focus on the most important tasks at hand. Getting Mandy a wheelchair and then finding our kids, once all that's taken care of we start finding clues on what happened and if there's a way to stop it." Carter explained.

"Yes boss!" Everyone said.

They all then went further into the hospital, keeping their guards up as they don't know what's in there with them. They look all around for anything that could help Mandy get around without having them carry her.

"Ugh Honey *Cough-Cough* How much longer are you going to take?" The group heard a woman's voice ask from one of the labs.

"Don't worry dear I'm almost done, Once I'm done we need to find Mr. Z and get the rest of the formula. I'm not letting him get away with this!" A man's voice responded.

Everyone looked at each other before heading to the lab they heard the voices coming from. They looked inside through the cracked open door and saw a man in a torn up lab coat, with blood stains on it working on something with the chemicals in the lab.

Upon further inspection they saw a woman in a white lab coat that was also blood stained, sitting on one of the beds in there, and to their horror they saw that the woman's right arm had a bite in it and an infection was spreading around her.

Carter in a panic kicked open the door and screamed "HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!"

He then pointed his gun and the bitten woman who in a panic sat up on the bed despite how much pain she was in, due to the look on her face.

"HEY WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE!" The man demanded to know.

"Sir I need you to look away, the lady here is bitten and you know what happens when you're bitten right?" Carter asked.

"Yes I know, but you're not killing my wife!" The man exclaimed.

"Sir, I know that it's hard to accept. But you need to understand, your wife is infected and is dying, so I have to take her out before she turns." Carter explained as calmly as he could.

"No you're not killing her because I have the cure for this!" The man explained.

When Carter and the other three heard that they fell silent as they didn't think that it was true.

"Sir I'm asking as an officer what is your name and your wife's name?" Carter asked in a demanding tone.

"My name is Leo Mayfeld, and my wife here Is Rosetta Mayfeld, but just call her Rose." Leo explained.

"Alright, and what do you mean by, you have the cure?" Carter asked.

"I mean I have the formula to make the cure... well part of it. I'm making it right now to use on my wife and help her. However, because it's just part of the formula it's just a temporary solution, but we know the man who has the rest of it." Leo explained.

"Hon I-I think I'm going to *Cough-Cough-Cough*" Rose was about to say before going into a coughing fit.

Leo looked back and was horrified to see his wife was starting to cough up blood as the infection got worse. Thinking fast he grabbed a syringe and filled it up with the cure he was working on. He then ran over to his wife and injected the cure right into her bloodstream. As soon as he did the infection started to die down and Rose started to look normal again.

Soon she was back to normal and Leo breathed a sigh of relief as he managed to save his wife in time before he'd lose her forever. Everyone else in the room also felt relieved that Rose did not become a zombie, as the last thing they wanted was to deal with a zombie in the hospital.

"Wow that cure worked fast, and hey! We could use this to stop this apocalypse!" James exclaimed happily.

"No we cant, not yet at least." Leo explained.

"What? What do you mean not yet?" Cassey asked.

"Because it's not the full cure yet, the rest of it was stole by my former boss Mr. Z, this cure I administered to my wife is just a temporary solution and will only last for a few days. So we're looking for Mr. Z to find the rest of the cure and save my wife's life, once we do that we're going home to see our daughter, and get her out of here." Leo explained.

"Mr. Z? Um, why would he have the cure for this virus?" Mandy asked, confused.

"Because he made this Virus and the person he was experimenting with the virus broke out of his cell and caused this outbreak." Leo explained.

When the other parents heard that they couldn't believe that a man as kind as Mr. Z would create such a virus.

"Listen to me and listen well, we need to find Mr. Z and get the rest of the formula for the cure. If we dont my wife won't make it, and the last thing I want to do is go home and tell my daughter her mother is infected with this virus." Leo explained.

"Well we just needed to come here to get a wheelchair for Mandy here, as she can't walk." Cassey explained.

Leo looked over at Cassey then to Mandy and said "I can help with that, follow me."

Leo then helped Rose up and took her and the others out of the room. They all passed some other rooms in the hospital and they made sure to be quiet and kept their guards up as they didn't want to be surprised by a zombie. Leo soon led them to a storage room and he opened the old door revealing that the room had wheelchairs, canes, crutches in it.

"This room is used to keep items that help people who can walk on their own get around." Leo explained as he went in and grabbed one of the wheelchairs.

"Now Mandy be careful in it, a lot of the things in here are old as hell and are normally pieces of shit so don't be too rough with it." Leo explained as he got the wheel chair set up.

"Yeah the last thing we need is the wheelchair breaking when we're running away from a horde." Rose explained.

"Thank you two, this helps out a lot." Mandy said as she was placed in the wheelchair, much to Cassey's relief.

"Anytime, now what do you all want to do now?" Leo asked.

"Well we were going to go and look for our kids and see if they're alright." Carter explained.

"Well then let's go look for both your kids and Mr. Z cause I'm not going to let our daughter see her mother in this state!" Leo explained sternly.

"Well, what are we waiting for? A nuke to be dropped on the city? Let's go find Mr. Z, get the rest of the cure, and ask him some questions about this virus." James explained.

"Yeah I wanna know why he made this virus, me and my husband are reporters, so once all of this is cleared up we're definitely going to make a big report about this." Cassey explained.

"Hmm well a report on an incident like this would blow up, and it is a smart idea to do it after this incident blows over." Rose explained.

"Yeah, but right now our concern is our daughter Janet." James explained.

"And mine is my son Lee." Carter said.

"And let's not forget about my twin boys, Jack and Chris." Mandy said.

"Alright It's settled then, let's go find Mr. Z and our kids." Leo said.

The other parents nodded their heads and they all left to go find their kids.

(Meanwhile back at the house)

Seven felt a bit tense as everyone in the house thought he was some sort of criminal now.

'Out of all humans I could've shapeshifted into why did it have to be a criminal and why did two of them have to know about this?' Seven asked himself.

The doors to Rina's room then opened and Rina came out of the room with Beth. Rina was holding her head in her hands and seemed to be dizzy as she wasn't walking straight.

"Hey Rina are you alright?" Ron asked worriedly.

"Y-Yeah I'm fine I just need some water." Rina explained and went up to the sink.

She turned on the water and started drinking straight from the tap. After a while Rina stopped drinking and turned the water off before standing up straight and pushing her hair out of her face.

"How do you feel now?" Janet asked.

"A lot better, also guys let all be quiet Lucy is sleeping right now and I don't want her to be woken up from her nap." Rina explained.

Jack and Chris looked at each other then they looked at Carter who just stared back at them.

"Hey Rina, is it okay if me and Chris look at some of the zombie stuff you got in your room?" Jack asked.

"Sure I don't see why not, just don't break anything cause I'll have a much harder time getting it back then just buying it on the internet." Rina explained.

"Okay, will do." Chris said before him and his brother went down into the basement AKA Rina's room.

Seven walked away into another part of the house away from the group.

'Mhh eights virus isn't strong enough, it's just starting to become active. If I want it I need to let the mutation happen, but how is the question?' Seven asked himself.

He then looked around the house and saw the three main support beams keeping the house up. He studied them for a while and saw that they were pretty old and weak.

'Hmm well my little sister seems to be pretty smart, she's hunkering down in a place with lots of food, water, and other necessities to live, but what would she do if such a place were to disappear? She would leave and try to find another safe haven, and she would have to face zombies, insane people, and much more. So that means all I've gotta do is take out these support beams and this house will come crumbling down to the ground. That would for sure cause a chain reaction in her and her virus would activate the mutation process, and once that's done I can take it for myself. Oh Seven you are as devious, as you are handsome and smart.' Seven thought to himself as he began to think of his plan to destroy the support beams.
