kristy's great idea.
(of course the pants cut off. they're shorts. just a heads up :))
PAM SKIPPED DOWN THE SCHOOL STAIRS, happy that the school day was over.
After eight hours, she could finally go home.
"Come on, Stacey!" The dirty blonde girl called out, looking for her sister.
Stacey came down the stairs with her three friends at her sides.
"I'm going to hang out with everyone. Can you make it home by yourself?" Stacey asked.
Pam nodded, adjusting her white backpack straps.
Her backpack had many patches and trinkets on them, showing her personality.
"Oh! That's fine. I'll see you later?" Pam asked.
Stacey nodded and Pam turned around, beginning to walk away.
"Your sisters weird." Claudia told the blonde.
"I heard that." Pam said, flicking her baby blue sunglasses off of her head and onto her nose, not caring about what people thought of her.
••••
PAM STOOD ON TOP OF HER BED, watering each of her little plants.
She mumbled a song under her breath, concentrating on the water falling from the white, glass watering pot.
"But when he loves me, I feel like I'm floating, when he calls me pretty, I feel like somebody, even when we made of-"
Pam stopped singing once she noticed one of her plants dying.
She could water it, but she chose to stare at it, sad at how depressed and upset it looked.
"It's okay, bud." Pam assured the little plant, watering it.
••••
"WHY AM I-WHY AM I COMING AGAIN?" Pam asked her sister, as the two walked down the sidewalk.
"Because you've talked to no one since we've moved here. Only your plants." Stacey pointed out.
"I like my plants. They listen."
"Well...my friend and a couple other of her friends are going to start a babysitting group. And we want you in it." Stacey informed her sister.
"What makes you think I like children?" Pam scoffed.
"I dunno. Maybe you want money."
"I'm in." Pam laughed.
••••
"HEY, CLAUDIA!" Stacey greeted, coming into her friends house with her sister behind her.
Pam sent Claudia a small wave.
"Oh my gosh, I love your shorts!" Claudia squealed.
Pam's eyes widened, but she smiled and patted her shorts.
"Thanks. I got them at a thrift store." The blonde smiled proudly, as Stacey took off her shoes.
"Which thrift store? I'm about to clean out my closet and thrift stores always have good stuff." Claudia asked kindly.
"I got them at the one on fifth street."
"You mean there's more than one thrift store in Stoneybrook?!"
••••
STACEY, PAM AND CLAUDIA sat in the girls colorful room, laughing with one another.
Pam and Claudia realized they had a lot in common, and the girl with black hair wanted to go thrift shopping with her soon!
"I think he likes you!" Stacey told Claudia, as Pam admired Claudia's artwork on the wall.
"Really? You think so?" Claudia asked.
"Yes!" Stacey exclaimed.
"I dunno." Claudia mumbled.
"I'm seriously gonna marry your room." Pam whispered.
"Uhm, have you seen your room?" Stacey laughed.
"Hey."
The three girls looked up and saw Kristy Thomas and Mary Anne Spier.
"Hey." Stacey smiled.
Pam waved to the two, sitting on Claudia's bed.
"Hey guys!" Claudia greeted.
Stacey and Pam got up, coming over to Claudia.
"Kristy, Mary Anne, these are my friends Stacey and Pam McGill." Claudia introduced, as Pam fiddled with her multiple bracelets on her wrist nervously.
"Hi." Stacey smiled.
"Hello." Pam whispered.
"Stacey and Pam just moved to Stoneybrook from New York." Claudia elaborated.
"Where in New York?" Mary Anne asked with glee in her voice.
"Oh, the city." Stacey waved off.
"You mean, like, Manhattan?" Mary Anne asked.
"Yeah. The Upper West Side." Stacey confirmed.
"Oh." Mary Anne whispered.
"So this babysitting thing sounds pretty chill." Stacey brought up.
"You told them?" Kristy asked Claudia.
"I didn't tell Pam. Stacey told her. And was it a secret?" Claudia asked, coming over with a huge book.
"Not technically." Kristy scoffed.
Claudia opened the book and it revealed to be hollowed out and had Twizzlers inside.
"Twizzlers!" Claudia cheered, picking it up and offering some to Stacey.
"I'm good." The blonde assured.
Pam grabbed one and began munching on it.
"Thanks."
Mary Anne shook her head no, and Kristy grabbed one.
"Fine. It's a babysitting club." Kristy admitted.
"Excuse me, I thought you said we were gonna make money." Claudia pointed out.
"Let me finish. So the other night, my mother needed a sitter for David Michael, and she had to make, like, a million phone calls and pay 80 bucks to join this weird website." Kristy explained.
"Which we'll then sell her personal information to, like, the Russians." Claudia interrupted.
"Like in Stranger Things." Pam whispered with a smile on her face, finishing her licorice.
"Yes. Like in Stranger Things. And I thought, wouldn't it be a great idea if you could, like, make one phone call and reach a whole bunch of good sitters at the same time? A few times a week, we'd all meet together in one place, and people would call and offer us jobs." Kristy finished her thinking.
"My dad doesn't let me pick up the phone if I don't recognize the number." Mary Anne mumbled, playing with the end of her braid.
"Not your phone. And olden times phone." Kristy corrected the girl.
"A landline! I've got one up here. We got an extra line with that super ultra high-speed internet package Janine needed for her stupid nerd servers." Claudia explained.
"So you'll do it?" Kristy asked.
"Maybe, if it doesn't conflict with my art class." Claudia said, going to sit down at her desk.
"Hey guys!" Claudia squealed, reaching into a crack and pulling out a bag.
"Watermelon gummies!"
"I love your room." Pam whispered in awe.
She handed the gummies to Stacey, who handed them to her sister.
Pam opened it at took five, sitting back down on the bed and handing them to Mary Anne.
"So how many times a week will we meet?" Claudia asked.
"A few. Three." Kristy confirmed, as herself and Mary Anne sat next to Pam.
"Monday, Wednesday, Friday?" Stacey suggested, "Easy to remember. Targeted social media ads are probably the best marketing strategy. I can figure out the best ratio of click-through to investment. I'm pretty good at math."
"Woah." Claudia whispered.
(A/N: I CANT STOP THINKING OF GABBIE HANNAH-)
"Have you two ever even babysat before? Don't all the kids in New York just have fancy Polish nannies until they graduate from collage?" Kristy asked.
"I think you're confusing real life with Gossip Girl." Stacey scoffed.
"And Dorota's actually a maid." Mary Anne pointed out.
"But you're right. Most of the kids in our building had nannies, but not on the weekends or the evenings." Stacey agreed.
"So Stacey and I would babysit for a lot of kids when their parents had events." Pam finished.
"Events. Like the Tonys." Mary Anne sighed dreamily, falling back onto the pile of pillows behind her.
"Yeah." Stacey laughed.
"Speaking of marketing, Claud, I was wondering if maybe you would like to draw us something, like a logo." Kristy suggested.
"Maybe! I need to process." Claudia answered.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" Pam asked, adjusting her purple shirt.
Kristy thought for a second.
"What do you like doing?" The brunette asked.
"Everything." Pam smiled, "Give me a task and I will not fail you."
"I'll think about things you can do." Kristy smiled.
Kristy looked over at Claudia.
"Oh! That's a cool sculpture. What's it about?"
"Menstruation."
••••
THE MCGILL FAMILY SAT AT THE DINNER TABLE, eating their food in silence.
"Stacey, you have your appointment in a couple days, remember?" Their dad pointed out.
Stacey nodded and took a drink of her apple juice.
"Can Pam come? She seems pretty bored and it would be cool for her to come." Stacey suggested with a smile.
"Pamela...is going to stay here." Their mom sternly declared.
"Why can't I come with?" Pam asked.
"Because the appointment's are about Stacey. Not about Pamela. So you are to stay here." Their dad said.
Pam rolled her eyes and began to play with her food, losing her appetite quickly after seeing the nepotism her parents gave her sister.
••••
PAM TRAILED NEXT TO THE BABYSITTERS CLUB WITH her pink sunglasses hanging on the edge of her nose, the straw to a blue slushee in her mouth and her white backpack securely set on her back.
"Okay, so club officers. I have the most experience and the club was my idea. So I am president." Kristy declared.
Stacey scoffed and Pam mixed her slushee around.
"I'm bossy. Get used to it."
"Kristy..." Mary Anne mumbled.
"Claudia, you're Vice President since we're meeting in your room." Kristy told the girl.
"Yes!" Claudia silently cheered, as Pam smiled at her with blue lips.
"Kristy." Mary Anne said again.
"What else? Pam can be the alternate officer, which means she can do jobs for other people when they're not here."
Pam nodded respectfully, knowing she can do the job.
"We need someone to handle business expenses, someone to handle marketing, social media-"
"Kristy! I want to be secretary. I'm organized and excellent at record-keeping. I'll also start a Google doc recording the details of our jobs, and I'll take minutes of every meeting and distribute them at the end of the week." Mary Anne demanded in a...kind way?
Everyone stared at the quiet girl in shock.
"If that's okay with everybody?"
The four smiled.
"Yeah, that'd be great!" Kristy smiled.
Mary Anne let out a breath of relief, and they started walking again.
"That's the most I've ever heard her speak!" Stacey told her sister and Claudia.
"I've known her since birth. And same." Claudia confirmed.
••••
"OKAY, THE FASTEST THING WOULD BE TO HAVE OUR EXISTING PLATFORMS TO CHRAGE A COMMUNITY OF INFLUENCERS." Stacey explained at Claudia's house, as everyone huddled around her phone.
The blonde turned to Claudia.
"Give me your Insta handles and I'll cross-reference your followers."
"Isn't it illegal to be on Instagram before you turn 13?" Mary Anne asked.
"Social media rots your brain~" Claudia sang.
"I always forget to take pictures unless it's of my own tongue, and that's by accident when I'm trying to see if there's something on my teeth." Kristy cringed.
"I'm thirteen. Would it be okay if I did it?" Pam asked.
"May I make a suggestion?"
The five looked up and saw Janine.
"Do we really have a choice?" Claudia asked.
"Given the challenge inherent, as yellow hair noted, in building a platform from scratch, I would ascertain that the most effective solution to your dilemma may be an analog one." Janine suggested.
"Huh?" Claudia asked.
"What?" Kristy added.
Janine sighed.
"Perhaps Claudia could create something you might distribute throughout the community."
"Like a flyer?" Claudia scoffed.
"Precisely."
Janine walked away from the doorway.
"I want to be treasurer anyway." Stacey shrugged.
••••
(A/N: *inhales* THE SHORTS! AHHHHHH! they're shorts :))
"EXCUSE ME!" Pam called out, running with Claudia and Stacey with flyers in everyone's hands.
"Hi! We're the babysitters club." Stacey introduced, handing the woman a flyer.
"Call us if you need a sitter!" Claudia squealed.
"Bye!" Pam waved, running away with the two.
••••
PAM SET A FLYER UNDER every car on the side of the street's windshield wipers, as Stacey and Claudia passed out flyers to people walking by the coffee shop.
The bell rang and Pam looked over to the coffee shop.
"Miss...Pamela? Your frappes are ready."
Pam smiled and put the last flyer she in in the windshield wiper, going into the shop and grabbing the three caramel frappes.
The blonde went to her sister and friend and handed them one.
"I thought we could use a refresher." Pam shrugged.
"Pam, you are seriously the best." Stacey whispered in awe, as Claudia happily started drinking her frappe.
••••
THE FIVE GIRLS RUSHED UP TO A MAILBOX and opened it eagerly.
"Last one!" Stacey squealed, as she put in securely inside the grey mailbox.
Claudia closed the mailbox and the five girls started running to Claudia's house.
••••
PAM SAT ON THE LITTLE SOFA WITH CLAUDIA AT HER HOUSE, waiting for the old, colorful phone to ring.
The blonde stuffed some M&M's into her mouth, staring at it carefully.
"Are you sure this thing actually works?" Kristy asked, breaking the silence.
"The Etsy shop I brought it from said it's fully operational." Claudia shrugged.
"It's 25 years old." Pam pointed out, leaning back onto the comfy couch for relief in her back.
"It's iconic." Claudia defended, loving the colorful phone.
The phone began ringing, and everyone gasped.
"Sorry! Sorry, I was just testing it." Stacey cringed.
"It's 5:23. I should go." Mary Anne pointed out, looking at her phone.
"The meetings last until 5:30. We all agreed." Kristy stopped the curly haired girl.
"My dad hates when I'm late." Mary Anne defended.
"Okay, but what happens when a client gets home late? You can't just leave a little kid at home because your dad might call the FBI." Kristy scoffed.
The phone began ringing, and everyone gasped.
Kristy grabbed the colorful phone and brought it up to her ear.
"Good afternoon! Babysitters club. This is Kristy Thomas, president and founder speaking."
"Who is it?" Claudia whispered, as Pam poured more M&M's into her mouth.
"Is it a job?" Stacey asked.
"How did you get this number?" Kristy asked.
Pam furrowed her eyebrows.
"Isn't tomorrow Saturday and don't you only get your kids on the weekends?" Kristy asked.
"Kristy, stop." Pam whispered.
"Hold, please." Kristy told the person on the phone.
Kristy brought the phone to her lap.
"Watson wants someone to watch his kids tomorrow, Karen and Andrew."
"Oh my god! It's our first job!" Claudia cheered.
"When is it?" Stacey asked.
"Two o'clock."
"Oh, bummer, that's when my life art class starts." Claudia informed Kristy.
"What?" The confused brunette asked.
"It's a college-level art class were you draw live models in the nude." Claudia explained.
"Claudia that's disgusting!" Pam exclaimed.
"I'm not nude! They're nude."
"I'm sorry. I can't do it either. I'll be in New York with our parents." Stacey said.
"Our first weekend open for business, and you two are out of town?" Kristy scoffed.
"I'm not gonna be out of town." Pam whispered.
"Why?" Mary Anne asked.
Pam shrugged.
"It was really last minute." Stacey continued.
"Whatever. Non of us are gonna sit for Watson Brewer anyway." Kristy scoffed.
Claudia picked up the phone and pressed the mute button.
"Claudia, what are you doing?!" Kristy asked.
"Muting you before you totally alienate our only client!" Claudia defended.
"There will be more, and he's just some jerk who's trying to find a way to abandon his kids on one of the only two days a week he gets to see them. My club isn't gonna help him do that, period." Kristy declared.
"You mean our club, and he's the only person that's called this entire meeting. Period. Pam, would you like to talk to him? You're the alternate officer anyways, so it's kind your job." Claudia offered.
Pam nodded and Claudia handed her the phone.
"Mary Anne, is the calendar open?" Claudia asked.
"Kristy, Pam and I are free." Mary Anne explained.
"I'll stay home. I have to watch the house anyways." Pam smiled, placing the phone on her shoulder.
"Kristy has made her feelings very clear. Do you want to sit for Watson tomorrow?" Claudia asked the curly haired girl.
"Mary Anne, no." Kristy defended.
"Quit bossing her around. Honestly, you're making me remember why I stopped hanging out with you so much." Claudia honestly told the girl.
Kristy sunk into her chair.
"Mary Anne, do you want this job?" Claudia asked.
Mary Anne nodded.
Claudia turned to Pam and signaled her to talk to Watson.
Pam unmuted the phone and brought it up to her ear.
"Hello Watson! I'm Pamela McGill, and Kristy cannot come to the phone right now because she became busy!" Pam happily explained to the man.
"That's alright! Did you find a sitter?"
"Yes we did! Mary Anne Spier will be your sitter for two o'clock on Saturday."
"Awesome!"
"Thank you, Watson, and have a good day! Bye now!"
"Goodbye!"
Pam hung up the phone and flipped her hair off her shoulder.
••••
PAM SAT ON HER BED WITH HER LAPTOP IN FRONT OF HER, watching Netflix while munching on cereal.
Whenever her family left for Stacey's appointment, Pam would sit around watching Netflix and eating cereal.
"It's all bullshit." The girl slurred on her laptop, as Pam wiped some milk away from her chin and giggled.
Pam took the last scoop of cereal out of the bowl and put it in her mouth and placed the spoon in the bowl.
She picked up her laptop and walked into the kitchen, putting the laptop on the kitchen table and putting the bowl in the sink.
Pam watched the show a little more longer.
The boy placed the girl into her bed, and she cuddled into it.
Pam sighed and paused her show, opening a new tab.
The girl opened YouTube, and went to her playlist.
Pam pressed play, and her guilty pleasure began pouring out of the speakers.
Smoking cigarettes on the roof.
The blonde went to the sink and began washing her bowl.
You look so pretty and I love this view.
Pam giggled as she placed the bowl and spoon to dry.
We fell in love in October.
"That's why, I love fall. Looking at the stars, admiring from afar." Pam whispered calmly, drying her hands.
My girl, my girl, my girl. You will be my girl, my girl, my girl. You will be my world, my world, my world, my world.
"You will be my girl."
••••
"PIZZA?" Claudia asked.
Pam looked up from her phone and saw Kristy with pizza and a salad bowl.
"I thought we could all use a treat. Uh, Stacey, I got you a salad if you want." Kristy told the blonde.
Stacey smiled from under her sisters arm, as Pam had it over her sisters shoulders.
"Come on, eat."
The four stood up and grabbed their food, sitting down afterwards.
"So...there's something I wanted to tell you guys."
Everyone looked up at Kristy.
"I'm sorry...for the way I acted the other day. I was wrong."
Stacey let out a sigh of relief.
"Wait a minute! Did I just hear Kristy Thomas say she was wrong?" Claudia giggled.
"Look, although the Babysitting club was my idea, it doesn't mean I get to tell you guys what to do all the time. And the clubs ours, not just mine. Even though it was my idea." Kristy whispered.
"Yeah, we know." Claudia laughed.
"With that being said, it would be an honor to continue serving as your president." Kristy concluded.
Everyone was silent.
Until Pam started giggling.
Everyone stared at her, confused.
The girl began laughing loudly, and fell back into Claudia's bed.
"Y-You think you're fired?! Oh, heavens not, Kristy! You're still our president!" Pam laughed.
"What Pam said!" Claudia giggled.
"As long as you know you're right about it 95% of the time instead of 100, I'm good." Mary Anne pointed out, as the girls agreed.
The phone began ringing.
"Oh my god. The phone! It's a meeting!" Mary Anne laughed, as Claudia rushed over to it.
"Hello, babysitters club! Mhm...mhm. Okay, please hold."
Claudia muted the phone.
"It's a new client!"
Everyone laughed happily.
"Amy Marshall, she has two little girls, Eleanor and Nina. She needs a sitter Thursday night." Claudia explained.
"Thursday night...Claudia, it's you!" Mary Anne cheered.
Claudia squealed.
"Claud, how did she find out about the club?" Kristy asked.
"Watson recommended us," Claudia brought the phone up to her ear, "Mhm! Great, thanks!"
The girl hung up the phone, and it started ringing again.
"My turn!" Stacey called out.
The blonde went over to the phone and picked it up.
"Good afternoon! Babysitters club. Papadakis? Can you spell that, please? You live next to the Brewers?" Stacey asked.
Pam popped her lips and went to Claudia's nightstand, picking up her bottle of coke-a-cola and brought it up her her lips, taking a swig of it.
"Okay! I will be your sitter, Stacey McGill. And...this weekend? Thank you! Okay, see you this weekend. Bye!"
Stacey hung up the phone.
Pam looked over and saw Kristy with her phone out, texting someone.
The blonde smiled, knowing exactly what she was texting.
'Tell Watson I say thank you.'
The girl stood up and went over to Claudia, loosely wrapping her arms around her shoulders, making the little girl laugh.
Kristy came over and took her presidents hat off of the hanger and placed it on her head.
And the five laughed, smiled and giggled.
Happy that they started this business.
