II. Return Of The Avatar

Aang and Aya rushed home quickly to find everyone getting ready for the encounter with the Fire Nation. Aya was getting scared and having flashbacks of when the last time the Fire Nation invaded their home, which resulted in absolute destruction and murder of her mother.

She wished that none of that would happen this time, especially the murder part. If Aya lost her sister, she would not know what to do. Katara is like her mom and she can't lose her second mother. She cannot lose any more of her family. She won't allow it.

Aang and Aya found Katara and Sokka and rushed over to them worriedly. Aya hugged her sister, who squeezed her firmly in her arms.

"Sokka! Katara, the Fire Nation. They're--"

"We know. We spotted them," Sokka interrupted as he handed other warriors spears. "Get to your posts now!"

Aang watched as weapons were passed out to the other warriors in the villages.

"Sokka, the racks-"  Aydo, the second oldest warrior in the village, rushed up to Sokka, who interrupted him.

"Get them loaded," Sokka ordered, pushing the spears into his arms and Aydo walked away.

"I don't understand. Why are they here?" Katara asked as she fixed Sokka's warrior outfit and Aya tied her braid up into a bun. "After all this time, what could they possibly want?"

Aya's eyes found a worried Aang and behind him was Kanna.

"Him," Kanna pointed at Aang, who turned to her. "He's more than the last Airbender. Aren't you? You are the Avatar."

Aang turned back to the siblings, unable to make eye contact with their shocked expressions.

"Aang?" Katara said and Sokka got angry.

"I knew he was hiding something," Sokka exclaimed. "When the world needed the Avatar the most, he vanished because he's a coward. He ran and people died."

"Sokka!" Aya protested, pushing him back. "Don't yell at him."

"Why are you defending him so much?" Sokka asked Aya. "You barely know him."

"Sokka, they've landed," Aydo informed Sokka, interrupting the bickering siblings.

"You two need to go hide," Sokka told his sisters, who protested.

"Sokka, I want-"

"Aya, do not even try," Sokka sternly told his sister, taking her shoulders. "Please."

Aya looked into his eyes momentarily, before nodding and Sokka ran off.

Katara took Aya's hand and turned to Aang.

"Come on, we need to get somewhere safe," Katara told Aang, who followed the sisters to a safer place.

——

The Fire Nation ship landed outside of Wolf Cove and Prince Zuko and his royal guards stood outside the front gate. Sokka stood behind the closed gate with the other young warriors around him ready to strike with their weapons. Aya, Katara, and Aang hid nearby, watching it go down.

Aya had her daggers in her hand, ready to fight if she is needed. She isn't afraid of those Firebenders, especially if they mess with her family.

"I am Prince Zuko. First-born son of Firelord Ozai! We have no desire to take your homes. We merely seek someone who does not belong here. Someone who is not one of you. Turn him over now, or I'll burn this place to the ground."

Aya's eyes found Aang as she heard Zuko speak from outside the village. They are here for Aang and if they don't get him, they will destroy our home.

Sokka immediately turned and walked away, marching past his sisters.

"Where is he?"

"No, Sokka!" Aya protested, following his quick pace with Katara.

"You can't give him to them-"

"He doesn't belong here!" Sokka reasoned, still walking and ignoring their attempts to stop him

"It's wrong! And you know that!" Aya berated him.

"What I know is that Dad told me to protect the village-"

"Yes! But remember what mom told us!" Katara stopped, standing in front of him and making him stop. "She said we have to protect those who can't protect themselves! He's lost everything he knows."

Sokka didn't respond and walked past them.

"Sokka, don't you see? He's the Avatar!" Aya cried to her brother, taking his arm and Sokka turned to her.

"And he lied to us about it!" Sokka exclaimed, making Aya flinch and Katara grabbed her shoulders.

"I know how hard this responsibility has been for you, but there's more to being a leader than just catching fish," Katara explained. "You have to give people something to live for. That's what the Avatar is. He's hope. And we need that just as much as we need food and shelter."

"I know I do," Aya added on with a soft voice and made eye contact with her brother, hoping he changes his mind.

——

Sokka opened the door to the county hall and he looked at Aang as the sisters rushed in, shutting the door. Aya went up to Aang first with Katara at her side and the three looked at Sokka, before he went over and grabbed his club.

Aya smiled, knowing Sokka was ready to fight to not only protect the village, but the Avatar.

——

Everyone was hiding inside the village as Sokka bravely opened the gate and faced the Firebenders. Aya was hiding right behind the gate, ready to attack if Sokka needs help.

She knows his stupid mouth will get him into trouble.

"I am Sokka," Sokka awkwardly greeted, approaching them. "Son of Hakoda. Lord of, uh... Snow and Ice." Aya looked through the gate with Katara and Aang as he spoke. "On behalf of the Water Tribe Village of Wolf Cove, I demand you leave immediately!"

"If this is the path you've chosen, then so be it." Zuko said and his guards ready their weapons to fight.

"Let's settle this between us! Leader to leader! You really need an army?" Sokka challenged and Zuko looked at him. "I thought you Firebenders had some guts."

"Don't fall for it. We overpower him. It's no contest," Lieutenant Jee reasoned to the Prince.

"Well, where's the glory in that?" Zuko snapped at him and looked back at Sokka. "I accept."

Aya's breath hitched at this, worrying much more for her brother.

Zuko immediately shot a fire blast at Sokka, who dodged it and then dodged a second blast by the prince. Sokka took a swing at Zuko, who ducked under the club and fire kicked Sokka to the ground.

"No!" Aya cried and went to help her brother, but Katara and Aang stopped her.

"Don't," Katara held her back. "It's one on one. Let Sokka do this."

Zuko sent two fire blasts at Sokka, who rolled out of the way of both and stood up to his feet. Zuko sent more fire blasts at Sokka, who retreated and ran toward the gate.

Aya, Aang, and Katara moved back as Sokka got closer and Zukos fire blast blew up the front gate. Aang instinctively grabbed Aya and pulled her behind a snow pillar as Katara hid behind another one.

Sokka was on the ground, covered in cinders and smoke was covering the area. Zuko marched up to Sokka, who was weakened.

"Who needs an army now?" Zuko threatened and formed a fireball in his hand.

Suddenly, a gust of air and snow knocked Zuko and his guards over. This let Sokka crawl away and Aya rushed over to her injured brother.

Zuko sat up and saw the Avatar standing in front of him with his staff in hand.

"Leave him alone!" Aang yelled and the guards ran over to Aang, who did a backflip over all of them and sent another air blast at them after he landed. They all fell to the ground and Zuko's eyes narrowed at the sight of the 12 year old boy.

"It can't be..."

Zuko did a firebending kick flip to get up and Aang defected it with his airbending. The fire blast and air blast came in contact and created a giant explosion. As the air cleaned up, it became silent and no one moved.

Aya rushed in from the side and knocked out a guard using the handle of one of her daggers. This signaled all of the other warriors to launch a bunch of rocks and snow at the Firebenders. Sokka proudly smiled at sight of his sister leading the warriors to attack them.

Aydo launched a rack of spears at the Firebenders, before Zuko had enough and marched forward. Aya swiftly sent a kick at Zuko and he stumbled back at her attack. She attempted to swing her daggers at him, but Zuko dodged them and shoved the girl to the ground.

"Enough games! Burn the whole place to the ground!" Zuko threatened, before Aang rushed in and stood in front of Aya. Sokka rushed over and kneeled next to his little sister in worry.

"No!" Aang protested and Zuko dropped his arms. "I'll go with you. Just leave them alone. I'm the one you're looking for."

Aya sat up with Sokka assisting her and she slowly shook her head.

"No..."

"Get him," Zuko demanded and Aya quickly got up to her feet with Katara rushing over to stop them.

"Wait!" Katara gasped and Sokka stood up, stopping her in her tracks along with holding Aya back too.

"It's okay, Aya and Katara," Aang assured them girls. "No one has ever fought for me before. I think you're the bravest people I've ever met."

Aya's eyes filled with tears. She didn't want him to go. He's protecting them by sacrificing himself.

Aang turned to Zuko and walked forward. Zuko snatched Aang's staff as he passed by. Aya's eyes found Zuko and she sent him a deadly glare and he narrowed his eyes at her.

"Aang..." Aya softly cried as he was taken away by the Firebenders. She hugged her brother, who tightly hugged her back, rubbing her head.

"Proud of you," Sokka muttered to her. "You're the bravest person I've ever met."

——

The siblings watched as the Fire Nation ship sailed away. Sokka thought for a moment, before he walked away and the girls followed him.

"We have to do something!" Aya called after him.

"Sokka! We have to help him!" Katara called and he didn't respond to them.

"Sokka!" Both girls cried, before Sokka took the shoulder of Aydo.

"Okay, listen up." Aydo looked at Sokka as he spoke. "Make sure to reinforce the braces on the gate, and don't fall behind on drills. I saw real sloppiness out there today."

"Drills?" Aydo questioned.

"And don't let the younger ones push you around," Sokka explained. "You gotta let 'em know who's in charge. That's right. You're in charge."

Aydo smiled, before running off and Sokka turned to his sisters.

"Now, let's go save Aya's boyfriend."

"He's not my-" Aya protested with red cheeks and sighed. "Whatever."

Katara chuckled, before the three ran off to plan for Aang's rescue.

——

"It won't be easy to catch them," Katara informed as the siblings had their bags on their shoulders and were ready to venture off to save Aang.

"I know," Sokka told her. "Hopefully we can find a swift current. Maybe draft off their wake."

Aya paused as she thought of a quicker way of transportation.

"Or..." Aya began and her siblings turned to her and she smiled. "We could go another way."

Katara caught on to what Aya was thinking and she grinned at her idea.

Sokka scoffed, "you're not serious."

The girls raised their eyebrows at Sokka, who was against the idea.

"Aya, no! There's no way you're getting me on that-"

——

"AHHHH!!"

Aya laughed as Sokka was yelling for his life as they flew on the back of Appa. Katara was steering Appa and Aya was enjoying the ride as Sokka was terrified.

"This is so fun!" Aya giggled to Sokka, who was gripping the saddle.

"You're crazy!"

Aya just gave him a toothy grin and Katara laughed from the front.

——

"There's Aang!" Aya pointed down as she saw Aang leap off the Fire Nation ship and used his glider to fly away.

Katara flew Appa down and Aya watched as the Firebenders send fire blasts as Aang, who managed to dodge them. Aang flew higher into the sky and Zuko sent a huge fire blast toward Aang which hit him and Aang yelled as he began to fall. He frantically reached for his glider as he plummeted toward the ice below him.

Aang managed to grab his glider and before he hit the ground, Aya's hand grabbed his and held him as they flew away from the ship.

"Hey, Iceberg Boy!" Aya greeted.

"Aya!" Aang smiled.

Zuko got angry and sent a huge beam of fire at the group. The four looked at the fire blast rocketing toward them, unsure of what to do. Moments later and before the fire blast hit them, a stream of water blasted up and extinguished the fire blast.

Katara stood there with her arms out and she was shocked by her Waterbending. She lowered her arms and stared at her hands as Aya pulled Aang onto the saddle.

"You did it!" Aya smiled at her sister, who was breathing heavily and gave her a tiny grin and looked away.

Appa flew into the clouds and away from Zuko.

"I can't believe you guys came for me. Thank you," Aang told the siblings.

"It's time we showed those flameheads they can't step all over us," Sokka grinned, pushing Aang gently and Aang chuckled. "The Firebenders aren't gonna give up. They're gonna keep coming after you."

"Which means we can't go home," Aya informed. "It would put everyone in danger."

"So, where do we go?" Katara asked.

——

~Southern Air Temple~

When Aang suggested the Southern Air Temple, Aya was very hesitant on going to see it. She knew it wouldn't look the same as when Aang was there a hundred years ago. She doesn't know how he will react to all his people dead and his home destroyed.

The group walked through the temple and it was completed destroyed. Every building and structure burnt to the ground, along with the skeletons of fallen Airbenders. It shattered Aya's heart to see such a gorgeous place in absolute destruction. She heard stories of how wonderful this place used to be and now it's gone.

Sokka picked up a burnt Fire Narion guard helmet and looked at Aang, who was speechless. He was too shocked and devastated to say anything.

They walked through another building and as they were examining the place Aang stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes grew at the sight of a skeleton that laid before him and this got the attention of the siblings.

"Gyatso," Aang mumbled and his breathing got heavier. Anger and rage filled his whole body as Gyatsos words filled his head.

"Now, this would be a huge burden for anyone, if you're of just anyone, Aang. You're strong and kind and generous. Remember that. Always remember who you are."

Aang's anger only increased as the words echoed in his head and this triggered his tattoos and eyes to glow. His feet levitated off the ground and the whole place began to rumble.

"Aang?" Aya questioned in curiously and worry. Wind began to blow and pick up debris around the as Aang got lifted higher.

"What's happening? What is he doing?!" Sokka yelled over the increasingly strong winds and rumbling. Sokka quickly grabbed his sisters and ran out of the building as it was getting picked up by the strong winds.

"Aang!" Katara called as a full on tornado was forming around the Avatar and it was causing even more destruction.

The siblings yelled out as they were getting blown away by the strong winds. Sokka was holding onto a tree with his sisters holding onto him, restricting themselves from getting blown away.

Aya was crying and screaming to to Aang, trying to get him to stop

"AANG! PLEASE! AANG!"

Aang could faintly hear her voice as he heard Gyatso speak.

"Aang, I can imagine a better person to have been given this power. You are my friend. You will always be my friend."

Aang's emotions went from anger to sadness and the tornado weakened as he was calming down. The siblings laid on the ground and looked at Aang, who was floating back to the ground. The wind vanished and the debris fell to the ground.

Aang landed in his knees with his head down and the light from his tattoos and eyes disappeared.

Aya ran over to the Avatar and kneeled next to him. Aya's eyes met a very distraught Aang for a moment, before Aang collapsed in her arms. Aya hugged him back and rested her chin on his head, softly massaging his neck. She shut her eyes and allowed him to cry in her arms. Katara knelt down and rubbed his shoulders as Sokka stood there with sorrowful eyes.

Aya began to cry with him. She couldn't imagine losing your whole home and family. No one should have to carry that burden and her heart aches for Aang. She will let Aang cry for hours and she wouldn't let go. Never letting him go.

"I'm sorry..." Aya softly cried.

——

"So, not to be rude, but what was that?" Sokka asked Aang, talking about what Aang just did.

"I don't know," Aang shrugged, now holding onto Gyatso's necklace. "There's so much I don't know. The monks gone, and I'm all alone."

Katara knelt down to Aang as he was sitting on a stump. "You know, the thing about losing everything is that that's when you learn how strong you really are. It's when you learn to fight."

"And you aren't alone," Aya reminded Aang, sitting next to him. "You have us."

"They made the ultimate sacrifice for me. I need to make sure their deaths weren't in vain. I need to follow through on what they wanted me to do. Complete my training and master all the other vending skills so I can bring balance back to the world."

"Oh, is that all?" Sokka asked.

"This was my home, and now it's gone. It's only after we lost something that we realize how much it means to us and how we'd do anything to get it back." Aang continued. "Anything. I don't know where this will all lead, and I don't know if I have what it takes, but one thing I do know is." Aang stood up and Aya followed in pursuit.

"I'm the Avatar and this is just the beginning."

——

Aya's story will be slightly different from my original series. Just a few changes, but the major things will remain the same. Some of her personality will also be different, but I think they will make her better and stronger.

Each episode will probably be split into maybe 2 or 3 chapters.
