Of Ghosts and Keys

"Get him! Quick, he's almost got me!" The girl was spread across a small blue bed, laying backwards on it, on her back as she tilted her head towards the screen at the front of the room. Her hair was a messy tangle of fiery curls, her pajamas dotted with pink foxes.

On the floor below her, a boy who appeared to be the same age sat with his legs tucked under him, resting against the frame of the bed. His hair was matted, once bright green eyes now rimmed red.

How long have these two been up?

"I'd be able to if you moved your stupid hair out of my face!" Though his words sounded harsh, his voice was laced with residue excitement from adrenaline and one-too-many Monster energies.

"Hey, it's not my fault you chose to sit down there." To further annoy him, she started to sway her head back and forth, tickling his face with her thick ringlets and obscuring his view even more.

He swatted her curls away, faking irritation. "If you wouldn't hog the bed- which, might I add, is mine- then I wouldn't have to be down here at all."

"Quiet! You're ruining my concentration," she said, pretending to be focused only on what was in front of them. It didn't last. Soon, they both burst out laughing, forgetting about the task at hand until an unpleasant screech from the screen reminded them of what they had been doing.

"Oh no, we're going to lose! Again!" the boy exclaimed, his fingers mashing the buttons on the controller in his hands.

"No we won't! Ghost Complex will not get the best of us this time!" There was a sparkle in her eyes, and she concentrated even more on the game, bouncing back and forth as if actually there.

"Just . . . a little . . . more . . . That's it, almost there now! Ginger, keep doing that while I get the key!"

"What, no, why do you get the key? Playing this was my idea!"

"Just do it!"

"No, you cover me!"

"Ginger, wait-"

"Too late!"

And she was off, about to beat what might be the most difficult level of any game they had ever played. Sweat beaded on their foreheads, and with one last push of effort, the television flashed white and their scores popped onto the screen, right under the phrase Level 1 Completed.

"We did it! So, on to level two?"
