Chapter 62
The ceremony was beautiful. It was short, but emotional. Mother Nature cooperated with clear skies and a light ocean breeze. It was agreed that Emily's idea of the arbor was perfect as it provided slight shade from the sun while they took more pictures.
Rory and Logan stood alone under the arbor as the photographer snapped away. Logan looked at Rory and said, "Ace, I can't put into words how beautiful you look today. When I saw you at the end of the aisle, my heart stopped. I couldn't believe that stunning woman was mine, about to be mine forever."
Rory gazed up at him with tears in her eyes and said, "I love you so much. All I could see from back where I stood on the aisle was you waiting for me."
They kissed lightly as the photographer captured the moment. He exclaimed, "That was perfect, absolutely perfect. I could not have posed you better."
After a few more photos, Rory, Logan, and the bridal party waiting outside the reception hall to be announced. The bridal party made their entrance first. Then the newlyweds were presented to the waiting crowd. The cheers and clapping was deafening as they made their way into the room. The couple danced their first dance as a married couple to "Moon River".
Once everyone was seated for dinner, the toasts began. Lane gave a funny, sweet speech as maid of honor. She brought up childhood memories and offered wifely, comedic advise. As she wished the couple well, Steve and Kwan yelled, "We love you, Aunt Rory!" Finn gave a surprisingly tame best man speech. He included several anecdotes about Logan, but kept it PG. Paris insisted she be allowed to speak and briefly summarized Logan and Rory's entire relationship for the crowd, ups and downs included. But she ended on a high, hopeful note while still threatening Logan if he dare hurt Rory.
The dinner Emily arranged was excellent and well received by everyone. It was four courses of mixed seafoods and beef served formally by a team of waiters and waitresses. Rory and Logan sat with the bridal party and the rest of their friends. Emily had wanted the couple to sit alone on a raised platform, but Rory rejected that idea. They wanted to sit with their friends. As a result, the dinner was lively and full of laughter.
After dinner, the band switched from classical, subdued sounds to more upbeat tunes for dancing. Rory and Logan got up and began to make the rounds. They began their tour of the tables with the Stars Hollow table first.
"Aww, Sugar, you look like a princess. Such a beautiful wedding," Babette said squeezing Rory.
"And such a gorgeous place. Everything you look at here is just so attractive," Miss Patty purred at Logan.
"Patty, I am a married man now. I cannot take part in your flirtations," Logan joked.
"Oh sweetie, being married doesn't mean being dead," Patty said laughing heartily.
"Congrats, man. Great place," Maury said from behind his signature sunglasses.
"Speaking of this great place, who would I talk to about applying for a job here?" Kirk asked.
"Umm, well, I don't really..." Logan began.
"Don't answer him. He's just being Kirk," Gyspy said. "Congratulations both of you."
"Thanks, Gyspy," Rory said. "I am so glad you all could make it!" Then she looked at Taylor. "Taylor, what are you doing? Are you having a good weekend?"
"What? Oh, yes. I was just looking over my receipt for the coat check. It does not clearly state on here if there is a charge for checking a coat," Taylor said.
"Why on Earth would you check a coat, Taylor? We are staying upstairs on the same floor! You didn't even have to walk outside to get here!" Babette yelled at him.
"I didn't know if there would be evening outside activities. I wanted to be prepared. The invitation wasn't that clear. There was no agenda," Taylor continued to nit pick.
"I'll be sure to let my Grandma know to be more specific for my next wedding," Rory said winking at Patty as they moved to the next group.
"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Bush. I am so glad you could make it. You remember my, well, now my husband, Logan?" Rory asked grinning ear to ear.
"Of course, hello Logan. Congratulations to both of you. Thank you for inviting us. This has just been a lovely weekend," Mrs. Bush said.
"I've had a lovely time too," Mr. Bush said grinning and looking at Miss Patty.
They all laughed and Rory said, "Sorry about that. It's Miss Patty. She really is harmless, just kind of forward."
"Oh, dad loves the attention," Jenna said laughing.
"Yeah, better watch out, dad. The music started again. I think she's looking for you!" Barbara said.
"Perhaps I should hit the dance floor with a new partner then. Rory, care to join me?" Mr. Bush asked.
"It would be my pleasure," Rory said as she was led on to the floor. As she turned around to look at Logan, she saw he was leading Mrs. Bush on to the floor.
After the dance with Mr. Bush, Rory was passed to Luke, then Christopher, then Finn, then Colin, then Jackson, then her grandfather, then Mitchum. Kirk even got a dance with the bride before Logan was able to snag her again.
"Popular lady tonight," he said smiling. "Now it's my turn with my wife."
"I've just been waiting for my husband to rescue me," Rory said smiling back.
"Sorry, Miss Patty got me," he laughed. "Then Babette had to have her turn. My neck is never going to be right again. That woman is short! I don't know how Maury does it."
"I know they're all kind of strange, but I am so glad they were able to come. All those crazy people are like my family," Rory said.
Logan sighed loudly, "Yikes, what did I marry into?"
As their dance ended, the music was cut off and Mitchum took the microphone. "Ladies and gentleman, I just wanted to take a moment to say a few words and make a little announcement. First of all, I think we all owe a round of applause to Mrs. Emily Gilmore for organizing this amazing wedding. I know she worked tirelessly to make this the perfect night for Logan and Rory. And I think we can all agree that she succeeded," Mitchum said as everyone applauded Emily. Shira, who was standing off to the side, shot daggers from her eyes at him for not including her as a contributor to the event. Mitchum saw, but ignored her, refusing to amend his speech. He continued, "I will only briefly interrupt the party here, but I was informed that my surprise is nearly ready. I would like to invite everyone to step outside on the patio or beach at this time. Don't worry, the party isn't over. I arranged to have two small bars set up outside, one by the pool, the other on the beach. So, please visit one and grab a glass of champagne before the surprise begins."
Mitchum said no more. He simply walked out the door. Everyone looked around confused for a moment, but followed Mitchum outside. Emily was urging people along. It was obvious she was in on the surprise. Many guests stayed on the raised patio directly outside the banquet room. Others wandered down the stairs to the beach or to sit on the lounges by the pool.
Rory and Logan looked at each other, not knowing what Mitchum was up to, but went out on to the beach. Logan grabbed two flutes of champagne as they sat on one of the lounges set out on the sand. Their friends joined them. Soon, Lorelia, Luke, April, Christopher, and Gigi joined them as well.
"What's going on? You know anything about this?" Lorelai asked.
"Not a thing," Logan answered.
Most of the Stars Hollow crowd and some of the elderly guests remained on the deck upstairs. Patty and Babette's voices carried as they anticipated and theorized on what the surprise could be.
Shira, Emily, and many of the other ladies that did not want to walk in sand in their dress shoes congregated in the pool yard where there was tile.
"What is this surprise of Mitchum's?" Emily asked innocently as she stood near Shira.
"How should I know? I am obviously not an organizer of this production. It's your party. You should know," Shira sulked.
"Oh, Shira. It's not a big deal that he didn't mention you. I am sure everyone knows you helped," Emily said trying to soothe Shira before she caused a scene.
Shira guzzled a flute of champagne and reached for another. "Oh Emily," she said mockingly, "No, no one would associate me and my tastes to this ho-down. I mean, really, who are those people up on the deck? What circus did you kidnap them from? And who would allow that large, annoying woman to hang all over an ex-president? I am not really upset my name isn't tied to this, how embarrassing! Emily, you really should have known better! You know the sort of people your daughter associates with, should have guessed the side-show that would come with her."
Just as the first firework exploded in the sky, Emily gave Shira a tiny nudge. With Shira's mile high heels and alcohol impaired balance on the slick tile, she tumbled right into the pool. Even through the blasts of the fireworks, the splash could be heard. Shira treaded water awkwardly in her long dress and desperately tried to smooth her hair.
Richard and Mitchum ran over to pull Shira out. "Oh my! The loud noise must have startled her. Shira, how embarrassing!" Emily exclaimed with mock concern.
Shira, noticed a small crowd had gathered. She did not want to admit she picked a fight with the grandmother of the bride and insulted her daughter. And considering past events, she really didn't think she should accuse Emily of pushing her in the pool. So, she gave a weak smile and said, "Yes, I guess I was too close. The noise was just so unexpected. Great surprise, Mitchum."
After they pulled her out, a very soggy and embarrassed Shira immediately called her driver and left the reception.
As they watched the spectacular firework display, Rory glanced over and nudged Logan as his mother was being pulled from the pool. Finn and the boys immediately erupted in laughter and took photos with their cell phone cameras.
Lorelai bent to whisper in Rory's ear, "Ten bucks says mom pushed her."
Rory locked eyes with Emily for a second. Emily gave Rory a very small smile and wink. Rory laughed and snuggled into Logan to watch the fireworks. "This is the best wedding I have ever been to," she said.
Logan kissed the top of her head and said, "Me too, Ace."
The End
