Chapter 61
Rory woke up to the sun shining brightly and birds chirping. The only other sound was Emily tapping gently on Rory's door and saying, "Good morning, bride. Time to rise and shine! We have coffee waiting for you!"
Rory couldn't help but smile hearing her grandmother's excitement. She said, "Good morning, Grandma. I'll be out in a few minutes."
Rory didn't bother getting dressed. Instead she pulled on a short robe, then went out into the dining area of the suite. She found her grandparents already seated at the small table. They were both grinning at her as she sat down and helped herself to some coffee and a danish.
"It's your wedding day, dear," Richard said. "I know we probably won't have many moments alone before the ceremony. I just wanted to tell you have happy I am for you. Now, I know there are some traditions expected at weddings. I am not sure what you have arranged in regards to the 'something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue' tradition, but I think I can cover the 'old and blue part'," Richard said.
He slid a box across the table to her. Rory slowly opened the lid and gasped. Inside was a pair of stunning blue sapphire and diamond drop earrings set in white gold. Richard lifted one out and said, "These are quite old. My mother, Trix, was given them by her father when she gave birth to me. Of course it is your choice if you wish to wear them, but your grandmother agreed they would compliment your dress nicely."
"Grandpa, these are gorgeous! I would love to wear them!" Rory said getting up to hug him. "I love the idea of wearing something of Gran's today."
"That's not all," Emily said. "I believe I can cover the "borrowed and new" parts." She handed Rory another box and said, "Richard just gave me this necklace. I have never worn it, so it is new. It matches the earrings perfectly. I would be happy to lend it to you for today."
"Oh Grandma, it's beautiful!" Rory said admiring the very large sapphire teardrop necklace. "I would love to wear it!"
"Good, then it's settled. Now, eat your breakfast. The hair and makeup stylists will be here in an hour to begin. I am just going to run to the bridal suite to make sure everything is set up. Then I have to head out to the beach and monitor the florist's progress on the arbor. I want everything to look perfect." Emily said already half out the door.
Richard smiled and shook his head as he went back to his newspaper. Rory sat and finished her breakfast while gazing at her new baubles.
"Aww! My dear, you are the most beautiful bride I have ever worked with!" Pierre announced as he put the finishing touches on Rory's makeup.
"I bet you say that to all the brides, Pierre," Rory said laughing. "I still can't believe my grandma tracked you down! I am so happy you are here!"
"Darling, your grandmother knows quality. And Pierre is the best!" Pierre said confidently. "New York is not so far. And she was very convincing in requesting I make the trip. It is an honor to be here for you today."
"Pierre, you are the best! I love my hair!" Lorelia said. "And I am shocked a Frenchman is so nice. I think I have been scarred and jaded by Michel all these years."
"Actually, according to some sources, the French aren't really rude, just aloof," Paris interjected from across the room. "They are much more sophisticated than Americans in many ways, so it's probably just in their attitude."
"Ah, but you are just exuding sophistication, my lovely. This style softens your features and brings out your eyes, no?" Pierre said managing to charm a smile out of even Paris.
Pierre touched Lane's hair next, "All this thick mane needed was a slight trim and look at the shine!"
"I like my hair too!" Gigi said.
"Yes, your hair looks wonderful, Gigi. The little flowers in your braid are so pretty!" April confirmed. Then she said to Pierre, "I can't believe you convinced me to wear the contacts. I can only imagine how many bacteria are on my eyeballs right now. But I don't care. I look good!"
"I have to hand it to you too, Pierre. With my pale skin, I never thought this eyeshadow would work, but you were right," Honor said.
"All of my ladies are looking ravishing! Now, we must get you into the dresses. Emily will be inspecting my work soon. We must be ready for her!" Pierre moved them along.
Emily and Shira walked in just as the girls were finishing getting dressed. They both stopped in their tracks when they saw Rory. Rory was a vision in her dress. Pierre had left her hair down at her request. She knew Logan liked her hair best when it was down. Pierre had styled it in soft waves. Small sections on either side were twisted together in the back of her head in a short braid like design. He had attached her short, thin veil above the braid.
Rory's makeup was done in a natural look meant to highlight her big blue eyes. Her lips were done in a soft red. The sapphire jewelry set sparkled in the sunlight coming in the windows.
"Rory, you look beautiful, just beautiful," Emily said choking up.
Shira stepped forward and touched Rory's arm. "You look gorgeous, dear."
Emily inspected everyone else and gave her approval. She then led all the ladies out to the arbor for photos. She instructed the wedding coordinator to monitor Logan's location and not allow him near this end of the building while Rory was outside.
They gathered in front of the arbor. Emily's demands and standards were worth it. It looked amazing. The tulle was gathered in poofs that moved in the light wind. Wispy trails of tulle were left hanging loose around the posts. Large floral pieces were attached in the front corners. The combination of blue hydrangea, white peonies, white garden roses, seeded eucalyptus and erngium looked perfect. Emily had achieved the elegant beachy look she had envisioned. The bouquets the ladies were given matched the arbor perfectly. Somehow Emily had achieved a casual, yet formal look that could have been featured in a magazine.
Rory lost count of how many photos were taken. She posed with her mother and Luke, then her mother and father, then her grandparents, then with her whole family, then the Huntzbergers, then with the girls, then with all the groomsmen. The photographer insisted on photos with everyone in all combinations. Rory was also posed alone under the arbor, in front of the ocean, and on the back stairs. Pierre was in charge of escorting her back to the bridal suite so Logan could take his turn posing. Rory insisted on a quick photo with Pierre before returning to the room.
Before Rory knew it, she was standing inside the club on her father's arm waiting for the cue to begin her walk to the alter.
Lorelai and Shira were escorted to seats near the front first. Then Honor, April, Paris and Lane made the journey down the aisle on the arms of their escorts. Gigi, Steve, and Kwan followed them. Finally it was Rory's turn.
"Dad?" Rory said nervously to Christopher. "Please don't let me fall."
"Same goes," Christopher said to her with a smile.
Moments later the music changed signaling Rory and Christopher to begin their walk out of the building and on to the beach. All eyes were on Rory. Rory could see many smiles and overheard the words "princess" and "stunning" and "beautiful" several times as they walked towards Luke. When they reached the point where Christopher would hand Rory to Luke, the men shook hands, then they transferred Rory. Christopher then walked around the perimeter to take a seat on Lorelai's left side.
Once on Luke's arm and beginning the final stretch of the aisle, Rory locked eyes with Logan. He was staring at her as if she was the only woman on the face of the Earth. She smiled at him. He smiled back and she swore she saw a tear in his eye.
Finally, they reached Logan. Luke kissed Rory on the cheek before placing her hand in Logan's and taking a seat on the right side of Lorelai.
The officiant smiled and said, "Who gives this woman to this man in marriage?"
Lorelai, Luke and Christopher all said, "We do."
